In Melon Michael Kors

Image by Evan Vucci / AP Photo

The first lady visted the United States Trade Representatives office in Washington, D.C. this afternoon, dressed in a Michael Kors sleeveless doubleface sheath dress -- the color of which was officially described as "melon" -- paired with a white cardigan and snakeskin heels. Lovely!

The colours are lovely, but I much preferred her Maria Pinto sheaths that she used to wear, to this particular ensemble.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 5:27 PM | Registered CommenterEnglish Observer

she knows how to rock a dress. i would have love it even more without the cardi.it hugs her in all the right places.
Mrs.T, can we see the back of this dress? only if michaels kors makes the pictures available, of course.
i love how the cardi tones down the sexy vibe of the dress.and the idea with the shoes. pure genius!
i would have opted for black shoes to stay on the safe side. once again Mrs.O teaches me how to accessorize.

Love the color scheme and her body looks fit. But maybe she needed one size up, because her stomach is jutting out in the dress. I like the fact that she tried a different color shoe, it almost works but I think her goldish bronze kitten heels would have brought it together much better.

I love this dress Michael Kors has always been one of my favorites. I love her so much, she is so inspirational becaue of her I have reformed my closet big time by adding more color and accessories. Way to go Mrs. Obama!

I love this dress. I have started to add more dresses to my wardrobe. I had been wearing pants for so long that I didn't have any work dresses or leisure dresses.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 6:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterCharmed

She looks spring inspired. Soft dainty colour.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 6:23 PM | Registered Commenterprettiribbons

I like this dress but I do find it just a bit too snug in the belly area. I think it would be classier if it grazed the area instead of hugging it. I'm by no means implying that she is fat, but I think this dress shows off an area that she might wish to play down just a bit more.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 6:27 PM | Unregistered Commenterfun

She looks wonderful! It was very warm here in the DC area- it was perfect for the weather.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 6:38 PM | Registered CommenterPatient

Love this entire look! This lady is the total package. I want to be her one day when I grow up!

Wow! Picture-perfect definition of "Spring".

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 7:34 PM | Unregistered Commentersd

I love this color! Michael Kors does not get enough props as being 1 of the 1st ladies top designers, Mrs. O definitely loves her MK sheaths!

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 8:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterNicole

I love the spring color...but the dress doesn't look like a great material, puts too much emphasis on too many areas. Love the shoes also.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 8:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterNatasha

I have to add that she has an amazing body! Alot of women, especially her age would love to have her body, I am 1 of them.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 8:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterNicole

This material is very unforgiving. There are so many wonderful shapewear items that would make this dress fall smoothly and not show every figure flaw. Sorry, but it's the truth. It's not about anything but fashion. It's too clingy. The color is nice on her but I sure love her in brighter jewel tones.

Love the shoes, though.

Newbie here! This website is such a treat. I love Mrs. Obama's style. The color of this dress is phenomenal, BUT does anyone think this dress is too tight? It puckers quite a bit. Maybe there' a fine line between "fitted" and "tight" and I'm mistaking one for the other...

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 9:13 PM | Registered CommenterY T

Is there a reason why the sleeves of her cardigans are always pushed up? Even during the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony her cardigan sleeves were pushed up. Is it because her arms are very long and the sleeves don't reach her wrists? I'm not trying to be snarky. I genuinely want to know if there is a reason for this. I don't think I've ever seen a photo of her wearing a cardigan with the sleeves down.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 9:40 PM | Unregistered CommenterJust Curious

Beautiful colour and accessorizing. She has the greatest legs!!

I'm not certain it's the right cut/shape for her figure. I wouldn't say it's tight. It looks like the fabric is clingy . . . maybe a jersey? . . . and it's clinging to her abdomen.

Yes, she has an amazing body . . . fit, lithe and lean. But even the best body can't wear everything. Then again . . . it's one photo. Maybe in person or from a different angle, it looks different.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 10:05 PM | Unregistered Commenterglammie

It could be the camera angle, but the outfit looks rather ill-fitting, quite tight; emphasizing the abdominal area. Is that a slit up the left side of the dress. Rather inappropriate for the setting.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 10:05 PM | Unregistered Commenterganelle

Unsuitable for a first lady. Sorry to say but this dress is inaprpopriate. A true fan of the Obamas

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 10:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterHélène

I think I agree with you, YT. It's a lovely dress, but maybe just a tad too tight. The other possibility though, is that she was photographed at the wrong second. I'd be interested to see this in a different angle.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 10:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterMark

Lovely color but come on people the dress is too tight.

Friday, April 2, 2010 at 10:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterKim

Love the color combo, but yes, YT, I do think it is tad too tight, especially with the side slit. We did not need to see every bit of her lovely curves.

I do love seeing our lovely and wonderful first lady - and boy does she look incredibly beautiful...Simply amazing - beautiful and wowee!!
You go Michelle Obama, you precious wife, mother, daughter and world class first lady!!

bangin body!

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 12:24 AM | Unregistered Commentermeemeemee

The neutral shoes appear to have some texture or pattern, very nice. The dress in too tight, as seen by all the puling and folds in the fabric. Too revealing and body hugging. Maybe a nice supportive undergarment would have helped. But the color is gentle, muted and flattering to her skin tone. The dress also has a nice split in the leg, a thought designer. There is definitely a trend with her sheer cardigans. My sister does the same thing, one in very color if she like it.

Be yourself inside and out. Above all, men's and women's style should be individual, not trying to dress like Mrs. O., "that I have to have exactly what she wearing." She has designers making these clothes for her many times. Her clothes are set up a week in advance she says so she doesn't have to think. That a nice idea especially for children to form good habits.

My wife has her own style and doesn't feel the need to look like someone else, through hairstyle, clothing or accesories. I admire her for that, rather thatn being a "Stepford Wife," as she says.

The women standing behing her, make me laugh with their expressions. But the little boy in the soccer picture is so funny with his arms folded. Someday he'll shake his head at himself. Hope the link works.

I'm with the commenter at 9:13. Mrs. Obama is great and so is this dress, but it IS too tight (through the middle, especially).

its a tad too tight - but hey.

Too snug......again!

The dress is too tight, hence all the puckers. It's not the best fitting dress.

Beautiful color, and I love a great sheath dress. But I have to say this outfit is a bit of a miss for me. I agree with YT that it may cross the line from "fitted" to "tight." In addition to the puckering, it emphasizes the tummy area in a not-so-flattering way. And I'd also have preferred it either without the cardi or with a less casual-looking one. She comes off far more casual than the other people in the photo. LOVE the shoes!

Beautiful springtime color, but way too tight -- Mrs. O has a great figure, but this dress makes her look like she's got a paunch. Also like the the shoes, but the white sweater is harsh and looks like an afterthought.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 8:05 AM | Unregistered CommenterLinda

Love the melon, the shoes & our fantabulous First Lady! I very much agree w/YT & BarbG...the sheath is too clingy around the tummy. Granted, she has a toned torso but any woman can be portrayed as having a pouch if the garment clings too much. Sometimes the % of spandex in the material will produce that look...best to go to one size larger to get the right drape. All that said, I have the utmost admiration for Flotus...anything she wears is way more interesting than the stodgy outfits of former Firsts. I know she will always keep us enthralled!

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 9:13 AM | Registered Commentergmcww

The Melon color is a nice match for Mrs. Obama.

However, the too tight knit fabric makes her look pregnant and wide. This fabric seems to personal for a first lady to wear in public.

Love the dress, but would prefer one size larger. Think it would be more flattering.

I love this melon color on our Michelle, it plays really nicely against her skin tone. This dress looks like it could've been part of the ensemble that she wore last July in Moscow. I believe the dress was Narciso and the coat being Michael Kors. Besides loving her cardis, I think maybe FLOTUS wears them to put people at ease rather than always a structured suit jacket. The people behind her are all suited up, as I would be if told she was coming to my workplace. I'd probobly pull out the Sunday best only after my best friends and sisters wrestle my ball gown out of my stubby little fingers while beating some common sense into me! Don't get me started about my mink stole and chandelier earrings with elbow length white leather gloves........oh, not a pretty picture to say the least! I'd be on the news!

@Charlene in Detroit - Not sure what you mean in last four lines. I think a belt would have been very nice with this outfit.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 11:15 AM | Unregistered CommenterASH

Maybe it's my age talking, but when I first looked at this photo and noticed the belly showing a little, I thought "how refreshing!" How refreshing that this confident woman doesn't mind showing she has a belly. It's okay to have one. The images we're bombarded with in advertisements, etc., typically offer only a small slice of what is beautiful and healthy.

Michelle Obama looks both to me. Beautiful and healthy. In many of her photos, she is not air-brushed and lit to perfection, but she has a glow that is way better than some so-called perfection. I don't know what to call it... I'm reminded of the beginning of Alice Walker's "Possessing the Secret of Joy". Perhaps what I see is a woman who is well-loved.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 11:46 AM | Unregistered CommenterDebra

Everything about this outfit works for me except the fit; It does seem a bit "snug". Also a necklace of some sort would enhance the outfit as well.

I love Mrs. O no matter what, though.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 11:52 AM | Registered Commenteravo

@Ash, I have to remember that not everyone is used to my sarcastic, odd sense of humor. I was saying (jokingly) that if I found out that FLOTUS was coming to my workplace, I'd probably be WAAAAY over-dressed. Instead of logicallly putting on a great career suit, I'd have to resist the urge to go to the far extreme, hence, ballgown, chandelier earrings, leather opera gloves and mink stole. You know, like I was being invited to a formal affair by the Queen of England! The news report would've been "What NOT to wear when meeting the First Lady" or "What on earth was this character from Detroit wearring?" Not a good look, indeed!

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 12:48 PM | Registered CommenterCharlene in Detroit

That's not a slit on the side--it's just the background.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 1:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterAuni

Charlene, you are funny. I immediately visualized what you wrote and it cracked me up. I got an Alice in Wonderland tea party kind of image dancing around in my head. I love the added headlines too. Very funny.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 1:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterDebra

Did you guys see a side slit in the dress from a another photo? On this photo it looks like no slit in the dress but a glimpse of the beige/brown curtain in the background showing against the black slacks of the woman standing on the riser behind MO. Following the beige/brown color down along the black slacks, it shows down to below MO's knee and it does appear to be distinct from her leg color. If that brown color was MO's leg and not the curtain, comparing it to her other side, she would have to have a tumor or some other disfigurement on the left thigh to stick out like that

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 1:14 PM | Registered CommenterJazz

I've never understood why so many of Mrs. O's designer clothes are so ill-fitting. This makes no sense from any angle. Ultimately, it doesn't matter if an outfit costs $5 or $50 or $5000. If it doesn't fit the body wearing it--well, it just doesn't.

The multitude of events Mrs. O attends and speaks at and sponsors (more power to her!) are on the calendar for months in advance, for the most part. Along with not seeming to have alterations people on her staff, Mrs. O also seems not to have anyone--whether staff, or simply just a friend--capable of giving her objective feedback on what she wears--for what, and for whom. Like or not, her public image at any given instant is going to be projected round the world, even as she takes her next breath. While I myself cannot imagine living under such scrutiny, it is the fact of her life, for now. She is one smart cookie, for sure, and she makes choices daily about the image that is going to be projected. When it comes down to it, Mrs. O's choices are an intrinsic reflection of the Obama presidency. She baffles me daily by these choices.

No matter how much I admire her (lots) and am intrigued by her (lots) and understand all too well her free spiritedness and intellect (lots lots), and have the highest of the hopes both for the Obama administration and the Obama family (lots lots lots), it pains me to see Mrs. O. in yet another poured-into dress, just as it pained me to see her basically hanging out of her top as she bent and crouched with the kids in the White House Garden. These are "just" clothes, but they are not. Not if you are the FLOTUS.

Best wishes for a Happy Easter to all,

JMH

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 1:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterJMH

There was a super close-up photo on Huff Post and there is NOT a side slit on the skirt (as many of us thought). It is the curtain and a pair of black pants the woman in the rear is wearing that give the illusion of a high slit. In other photos she looks better than in this one. Here she just forgot to "suck it in" as we all do...........which shapewear forces you to do or does it for you.

The FLOTUS has long limbs, as do I. She has probably discovered through trial and error that suits and blouses that reach to her wrist don't work well. I favor my sweater and blouse lengths the same as she does, above the elbow, or even a 3/4 length sleeve.
