In Melon Michael Kors

Image by Evan Vucci / AP Photo

The first lady visted the United States Trade Representatives office in Washington, D.C. this afternoon, dressed in a Michael Kors sleeveless doubleface sheath dress -- the color of which was officially described as "melon" -- paired with a white cardigan and snakeskin heels. Lovely!

I'm with you Jazz...I think the slit illusion is exactly as you described it. This picture on HP makes that effect easier to see.

I guess this was for anyone in doubt that Mrs O is as fit as all hell. Holey moley.

@Asereht, Girl why did you direct us to that post? Now all I can see is the lady standing behind her in black/white suit.....with bare feet. How well I can relate when my dogs start barking! Too funny! There goes my odd sense of humor again. Holy Guacamole, Batman! Happy Easter everbody!

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 2:10 PM | Registered CommenterCharlene in Detroit

Love the dress but I have to agree with many of the posters....It is a tad tight. She still manages to look great though. Can't be beat on that one. I love the colour. It is very soothing. Love the cardi too.
@ Charlene in Detroit - I have to agree with you,in that if I hear that FLOTUS were coming to visit, I would really bring out some of my best stuff. I would therefore more than likely be overdressed just to be safe. She would ALWAYS end up being casually dressed compared to me BUT that does NOT mean that SHE is inappropriately dressed.
Also, I am hoping that the toes that we are seeing re: lady in black and white -are really above sandals withvery thin straps.(smile)
@ Jazz - I have to admit that when I first looked at the photograph, I, too thought there was a slit but I quickly realised that it was an illusion. a slit simply did not go with the whole feeling of the dress.
@ Asereht -Thanks for the "bigger picture" (tongue in cheek).
Happy Easter ALL!!
BTW, yesterday was my birthday and I gave myself a set of pins which reminded me of FLOTUS' Can't wait to wear them with an outfit I got from my fiance.

Love the color but agree with others that it's not the most flattering fit. But guess what, this is probably the 'first' time I've not been overly crazy about what the First Lady has worn. Shoot, I don't do that good with my own clothes!!
Michelle Obama fan!

Good lord! This woman, this lady, is giving me fever!!! Just too darn smart, fit and sexy for words! She looks good in every damned thing!!! And she looks so confident, and wears clothing with such effortlessness. ...Mr. President: you picked yourself one fine lady. Lucky "dog," you!!!

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 4:15 PM | Unregistered CommenterDarrell Diggins

Women: Lighten up, please! This dress is not tight or "too tight." It's a "sheath." Hello!!! Not a poodle skirt or a duster. It's SUPPOSED TO hug the body. Moreso, it's very tasteful and classily put together. Michelle is NOT Laura or Hillary or Barbara. No disrespect to those first ladies, but they don't have the "x," "y," and "z" to breathe life into fashion like Michelle--or Jackie did. If you're a fan of this site, I thought you'd know that. Geez.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 4:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterDarrell Diggins

@Charlene in Detroit - I still dont get it completely.Do you like this look and are the ladies dressed appropriately? What do you mean "not a good look indeed"

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 4:20 PM | Unregistered CommenterASH

that's quite an extreme explanation Jazz...was that necessary? really?

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 4:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterC

We all are familiar with the well known phrase about a picture being worth a thousand words. Well, I prefer the Marvin Gaye take on it;

...believe half of what you see and none of what you hear (from Grapevine)...

When I think about, that at any given time, Mrs.O is being photographed by dozens of cameras, many with shutter speeds faster than most humans can blink, and that we each are viewing these photos using PC's with varied resolutions, it's no wonder we can each see something different. I too see open toed sandals on the lady....at least I hope that's what I see . At any rate, Charlene, I totally understand the pain of barking dogs, so if she is barefooted...and got caught by the camera at an inopportune nanosecond... think of the flavor it will add to her story about about being photographed with the First lady (LOL).

Happy belated Trinisamba!

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 5:01 PM | Registered CommenterAsereht

You guys is it really too tight and I am being serious and not trying to be a smart a##. I feel like it has more to do with the material and if Mrs. O would have pulled it down after she got up or walked up the stairs, there would be no bunching. IDK, I think if it was too tight it would have been cutting into her skin instead of the opposite. But either way, I like it and the shoes are da bomb!!!

Happy belated B-Day Trinisamba!!!

Happy Easter!!!

Beautiful colour and she's back wearing my favourite Jimmy Choo pumps, I loved when she wore them when she was over here in London. However, it appears that the dress is too tight, hence the reason why it is riding up in the front. Having said that, she has an amazing figure that can clearly handle a tight frock.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 5:35 PM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

A photo taken from the rear shows a slit there. The one that appears to be on the side is, as some have noted, an illusion.

Color great, fit not - so tight that dress rides up, shoes good, sweater a miss. White cardi is an off note. A beige in a tone near the shoes would have completed the ensemble look and enhanced the dress.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 5:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterBeeGee

I call that color canteloupe. The dress is too tight for some functions but for date night it would be perfect!

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 5:51 PM | Unregistered Commenterjenh

@Nyon - No, I don't think it's too tight. I believe it's one of those nano-second things. If this pic had been taken an eye blink later, and as you said, she had a chance to smooth it down, this whole discusssion about too tight/snug/fitted/inappropriate would be a nonissue.

I think someone upthread made the point earlier about photos being staged, lit to the nth degree, and then airbrushed on top of it all to the point that we no longer seem to be able to appreciate a candid moment for what it is without expecting the absolute perfection of a overly manipulated. cover page ready, photo of her each time. I think she looks wonderful...bunches and all!

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 6:17 PM | Registered CommenterAsereht

I get very tired of the people who say Mrs. O. should show off her "bangin' body." This dress, as well as many others, is too snug. Period. Mrs. O. is the First Lady of the United States. She is not an actress, a model or a showgirl. Have some common sense, please.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 6:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

I love this color on FLOTUS. Yes it is a little snug but we all know she likes to wear form fitting clothing. Sh isn't ashamed of her body. I think she looks GREAT...

@ Asereht and Nyon - Thank you sooo much.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 7:38 PM | Registered Commentertrinisamba

Mrs. Obama looks gorgeous! For a woman who had 2 children, she looks great! I really like the softness of the stretch knit dress and the way it fits her body. The melon color and the 3/4 length sleeves of the soft shell cardigan adds a classy touch. Yah! No belt, no pearls...she definitely knows what works for her! I'm with you, Mrs. Obama, I don't like anything covering my elbows either, unless it's a full length sleeve.

I grew up with a mother who thought lycra and spandex was a woman's god send. While at the same time, couldn't wait to 'inhale/exhale' without hinderances. I'll never forget the chants of some of our relatives or my mother's female friends, who before sitting down to eat would say, "girl, I can't wait to get out of this girdle?" LOL! Just like 'those boots were made for walkin' I don't know any girdle that was made for the ease of eating! LOL!

Happy Easter Everyone!

Very well put Debra...

Absolutely correct Jazz and Asereht; No slit on the dress...

Goes to show how incredibly incomplete and misleading a single photo shot at a certain angle can be. This is not a 'tight dress with a slit' as the swarm of unregistered chorus of commenters would have us believe...

Happy birthday Trinisamba; many more joyous, healthy and prosperous years...Enjoy the pins!

Happy Easter everyone!

Love the First Lady but this dress is simply awful. Looks like polyester from a discount dress store.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 10:22 PM | Unregistered Commenterkbarch

Um. Jazz, Audrey, etc. There actually is a slit on the dress. It's at the back.

I've seen a picture from behind. Whoa. I challenge anyone to look at the back view and say the dress is not too tight.

Lovely color, though. But a dress like this requires spanx (or a flat stomach and toned butt). Nuff said.

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 11:26 PM | Unregistered Commenternonpasserat

This is unfortunately a very unflattering photo. Either the angle is just wrong, or the dress is way too tight/small.

I love the color!

Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 11:39 PM | Registered Commentersusan2

Those heels are proving to be a nice staple.

I don't see this dress as being too tight. In my eyes, she's filling it out.

Sunday, April 4, 2010 at 4:49 AM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

The dress does not fit. It's too tight. Who wants their tummy to show like that? Not me.

Sunday, April 4, 2010 at 6:32 AM | Unregistered Commenterpoiret

Way too tight and not right for her body size. A for effort but the dress is a least two sizes to small that id becomes distracting to the message, with all the folds in her hip line. If should would have sat down then stood to be annonced. It would have looked eve4n moe shabby. Trying to hard to e cool.

Happy Easter to all.

What's the matter with your eyes people. What inappropriate side slit!!!!!!!!!
She looks fabulous and the inappropriate police must jump in and say something stupid. If you are going to criticize at least criticize reality. whoosh!

Lovely color. Too tight.

Sunday, April 4, 2010 at 11:06 AM | Unregistered Commentergigi

I think that we should learn to appreciate who she is for those complaining about the tight clothing.Lets focus on her beauty and elegance, the colors she is wearing ,something good about the oufit and not something bad about it.Mrs O is true to herself and has always worn tight fitting clothing, that is her and we should get used to it.People are always quick to judge without taking time to think. The illussion of the slit should be a lesson to all of us.For those who were making bad comments about the slit should now closely look and will realise that it is not a slit.

Sunday, April 4, 2010 at 12:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterAnn

I agree with McKinley. Her body rocks. When I first saw the photo yesterday I thought, wow,
Mrs O is looking sexy today!!! Maybe too sexy for the moment - can't say without seeing
more photos. But the color is glorious on her and the outfit surely showcases her toned
body. Michelle, you are just so darn wonderful.

I meant to correct this sooner. Anyway, my bad, there is no slit in the dress, it just seems that way depending on the picture angle. Still think it is a tad tight.

Thanks a mil, Audrey. I enjoyed them today.

Sunday, April 4, 2010 at 6:56 PM | Registered Commentertrinisamba

I brought my Easter Dress last week and it fit just fine (in the fitting room) I put it on this morning and it was too tight (esp. to wear to church LOL)

Anyway maybe it's the same with Mrs. O. What she can wear today may just be a tad too tight tomorrow. But wait a day or two and the outfit in question will fit again.

Sunday, April 4, 2010 at 6:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterJoyce

Love the color and style, but it's just a bit "too snug" as many others have noted. . Happy Easter everyone

She looks like a breath of fresh air! I love that she has the tiniest (and I mean tiniest) of paunches.Very hard to avoid those 24/7 if you're a woman, and why should you, curves are womanly and sexy.

Sunday, April 4, 2010 at 10:35 PM | Unregistered Commentereve

Oh well she wore it, get over it already. And she will wear it again and you will get over it.

She is not your pet nor is she your girlfriend, get over it.
She is not trying to be anybody BUT Mrs. Michelle Obama. .you will get over it too.
She is not other first ladies nor does she desire to ever be but rather to just be herself.

You don't like the fit, fine--- you will get over it too
You like the fits, fine---- you will get over it too
But it wouldn't stop her from doing her or wearing what she wants or commenting on what "you" think she should do or not do.
Like every first ladies before her, you will like, not like, hate some of the clothes, it is what it is. But again she ain't your doll to play dress up on.

So we will get over it and move on to the next analysis of whether this length is too long, this is too snug, the belt is too blahhhhhh, the shirt is too blah blahh, her eye is too this, her eyebrow is too, her stomach is too, her blank is too, her this is too, or the condescending what was she thinking commentary....

Happy Easter

I absolutely love the color of the dress and now I will go in search of something in that color. It's lovely for spring. The white cardigan paired with this dress is fine -- it doesn't cause me heartburn at all. I think the shoe selection is spot on. I would never have thought of that color -- I probably would have worn black patent leather. Then again, until this weekend I didn't own a pair of shoes that color -- just purchased a lovely pair of Via Spiga slingbacks. Now I need to find snakeskin!

I wanted to give this dress one more chance but I just saw the picture someone linked to: the rear view. SO awful. This is a huge "miss". This is just not doing her any favors. No wonder that woman was looking at her like that! Moving on.....hope this dress goes to the back of the closet!

Ok, so now that ya'll have proved the dress was too tight, Now WHAt? What did you gain from that, getting a chance to say I told you so. Because I could care less that the dress is tight.
Like briana said you will get over it, at least I hope you will.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 12:11 PM | Registered Commentertrinisamba

Oops, there goes that faultline to the medieval era again, and a lot of people who don't quite understanding the meaning of the word "fitted". Or who don't appear to understand that certain fabrics do a certain job. Or that it's OK to be proud of your body (obviously the biggest problem of all for some posters.) Me, I love the dress and I just LOVE that she wears beautiful, sexy, smart, chic dresses.

I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where all women supported all other women? I wonder if we'll ever know.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 1:44 PM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

Obviously, Mrs. Obama will never look like some of the runway models when wearing that type of fabric in this style dress. I THANK GOD FOR THAT! This dress on anyone of those (unnaturally thin) models will look like it's still on a hanger in their closet (no offense, but it's true)! That's why we're women! We're supposed to eat and have curves in the right places. So what, if some of the curves are a little abundant in some places more than in others. In Mrs. Obama's case in this photo, it's not that way!

I recently saw Aretha Franklin in a video wearing a low cut evening gown with a side slit up to her thigh (couldn't tell at first glance) and a cute jacket. Some may think her supercilious, obese, and a bit much in her ensemble. But, when Miss Aretha threw back her gown while singing Natural Woman, exposing her leg, she had all the airs of a robust, mature, sexy woman! She doesn't give a FLIP about what anyone else thinks. Rightfully so! To her, she's attractive and she dares to flaunt it her way! Who would dare tell her other wise? At least not to Miss Re Re's face! LOL!

@ Posh Tater. That would be profound. Personally, I don't look for women supporting all other women on a large scale at this time, and I'm usually very optimistic. That would be too much like unconditonal love, right! The time we're living in is somewhat different from during the time I observed my mother and the women she crossed paths with. There was such comradery and support towards neighbors and strangers, alike! Regardless of the race and ethnicity! They chose to be different. Unbeknown to the rest of the world, they were very protective of their rights to respect each other and their familes.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 3:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterMs. M

I think a great way to show support for all other women would be to support their right to their own opinion!
