Mrs. O Thinks Pink

Photo by Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, First Lady Mrs. O hosted an event in the East Garden of the White House this afternoon, dressed in a gray top and flower printed pencil skirt from Moschino Spring 2009. An overscale leather cut-out belt defined the waist.

Also on Friday, Mrs. O met with Queen Silvia of Sweden in the Yellow Oval Room of the White House. Mrs. O topped her ensemble with a coordinating floral jacket from Moschino.

The White House has just released the most wonderful family portrait of the Os. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, the family sat for the portrait on September 1, 2009. Beautiful!

Update: The fabulous Ari has helped to confirm that Mrs. O wears an Azzedine Alaia dress, seen here. Mrs. O previously wore the dress for a celebration to honor the late Senator Ted Kennedy's birthday earlier this year, here, as well as for the Obama Staff Ball following the inauguration, here.

Mrs. O and The Future of Fashion

Glamour magazine hosted a panel discussion on The Future of Women's Fashion at the 92nd St. Y in New York last evening, moderated by editor-in-chief Cindy Lieve. Both Robin Givhan and Isaac Mizrahi participated, weighing in on the first lady's style.

From NYMag:

Cindy Lieve: Do you see Michelle Obama having an effect on fashion?

Robin Givhan: She has had impact in that she set an example for a lot of women who are over the age of 30 who felt disenfranchised by the fashion industry. And I think she is perfect example to them that you can incorporate fashion into your lives, and what makes you look good doesn't necessarily negate your I.Q. And unfortunately, for a lot of people there is the idea that if you show a lot of interest in fashion, particularly in our nation's capital, that you also can't keep statistics in your head.

Isaac Mizrahi: And I will add to that, the First Lady is an actual woman. She doesn't have a tiny thigh, she doesn't have a huge thigh, she has a real thigh. That's a great role model.

Check out Glamour's Slaves to Fashion blog for a follow-up interview with Robin Givhan. Her designer wish for Mrs. O? To wear Marc Jacobs!

P.S. Did anyone attend? We would love to hear more about this event!

Jump, Skip, Hula

First Lady Mrs. O is taking part in the Healthy Kids Fair on the South Lawn of the White House today. The event promotes exercise and healthy eating for children, and Mrs. O is getting right in the action - jumping rope, hula hooping and running barefoot through an obstacle course. Click here to read Mrs. O's remarks from the event (including Mrs. O's confession that she has a "good relationship with french fries" - in moderation, of course!).

On the style front, Mrs. O is wearing a black dot twist front tank with eyelash trim by Jason Wu, paired with a blue cardigan belted at the waist. Slim black pants complete the look, accessorized with a set of bangle bracelets.

The Tour Continues

First Lady Mrs. O has resumed her tour of federal agencies, speaking this morning at the Department of Veteran Affairs. We wonder what the current count is for federal agencies visited by Mrs. O? Please help us tally and we'll update the post.

We are holding out for better photos from the event to surface, but from an initial peek, we believe that may be J.Crew's Deco shirred skirt we see.  More to follow.

Update: Hmm, how odd, very few photos from today. The Veterans Affairs website has posted a thumbnail photo that at least gives us another look, here.
