Mrs. O Thinks Pink

Photo by Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, First Lady Mrs. O hosted an event in the East Garden of the White House this afternoon, dressed in a gray top and flower printed pencil skirt from Moschino Spring 2009. An overscale leather cut-out belt defined the waist.

Also on Friday, Mrs. O met with Queen Silvia of Sweden in the Yellow Oval Room of the White House. Mrs. O topped her ensemble with a coordinating floral jacket from Moschino.

I love that Mrs. O practices what she preach....she endorses being physically fit, being happy in your own skin, taking care of yourself so that you can take care of your family, as well as being true to yourself. You can see in her pictures that she embodies all the things that makes her such a well-rounded woman. Now that I'm done gushing, onto the fashion. I love the new slate or grey/beige of the season. That top is something special. I like the print in the skirt as well. She looks amazing. I cannot wait to see more pictures of The First Family now that the Holidays are upon us! Mrs. T, keep up the good work and welcome home from your vacation!

Very cute skirt. She wore that belt once before in Puerto Rico during the campaign. Here's a video of her arrival (when she's wearing the belt with a hot ruffled maria pinto top and pencil skirt) and a few of her speeches.

Love her skirt. Subtle nod to "pink" for breast cancer awareness month.

I would like this outfit more if the belt were a corset.

I think she should cancel the belts and start wearing corsets, like Madonna in the 80s. She actually wore a corset on the campaign trail once and it looked so cool. It would give her the same feel as the belt, with the close gathered at the body, but it would look really cool and avant garde.

What do y'all think? Do you think Mrs. O should wear corset tops?

Lovely outfit. Very chic and understated. I like it. And what a beautiful belt. Thank you Ari for the video link - it looked even MORE stunning first time out in Puerto Rico with one of my favourite tops! The video itself was great and I thought Michell's speech was very moving. As I always do, but particularly so. I think she herself was very touched by her welcome in Puerto Rico and that came out in her speech there.

(Tracy I think she "should" carry on doing what makes sense to her. When she wants to wear a corset, she will. And when she wants to wear a belt, she'll look great in those too. She always looks fine. It's up to us to accept that!)

I like the belt, and skirt. Also, Jilly looked lovely in her all pink outfit

What I think was particularly interesting is that although the president's and first lady's events took place in separate cities, but at the same time, the president wore a pink tie for the first time that I can recall. To me that shows silent support for his wife's agenda and for women in general.

White House released a photo of the first lady with Queen Silvia of Sweden in the Yellow Room today. She is wearing this skirt with a matching buttoned up jacket. Seems like too much floral in this pose. Perhaps less so in person or when she is standing. Cleaner profile with the dark top.

Also White House blog has a very nice video of Michelle speaking about health care in personal terms. She is very lovely wearing black and pearls. She refers to her earlier event and presents a shot of her at that event.

She looks great as always but I would have to say the print is too busy though the pink is lovely. I have a thing about skirt lengths and have mentioned it before and this shows why because when you sit down the skirt rides up but if it were a little longer, would be more flattering. Just my opinion.

I really like the skirt with that gray top and actually love the extra wide belt but that print is just too much for a full suit, just a bit busy for my taste but she obviously loves busy prints. I would love to see her standing in that outfit. She wore a Thakoon dress and coat in France when she met Carla which was also very busy. The dress was lovely by itself but the coat was overpoweringly purple. However, I though she looked lovely tonight on Jay. She always looks great in sheaths.

Surprisingly enough, I Iove this belt on her. It is a huge belt, but it is delicate and gives an etched lace accent to the gray shirt she is wearing. I would have liked it better if she had a solid coordinating jacket in the bottom picture, but overall great look! Also, I must mention her beautiful posture in the 1rst pic; the few ballet lessons she took in her youth indeed serve her well.

Ari-
I looked at the video you posted up above and at the 55 second mark that belt looks different to me.

I completely agree with you, Denisegirl. Certainly, for the occassion the outfit is a little too busy for my taste. Maybe for church or a formal function with the right coloured shoes and bag it could work better but for a seated interview.............It's not my favourite Mrs O outfit.

However, I would say that she completely pulls it off with the grey top and belt.

She is also wearing the belt here in the campaign: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-mLO0ZgOwc&feature=related (Warning though...the video is from Morning Joe on Fox and they are showing the clip in an unfavorable light, but the belt is there and I'm not sure where she or when she was speaking--I kind of accidentally happened upon the clip today. I think what she said was great, but Morning Joe thought it was angry and hateful.)

Here is a really nice, clear pic, from Day LIfe, of the belt. I like!

I love the print skirt with the sweater and belt. Very clean and elegant in a low-key way. But, I'm sorry - when I see the jacket and skirt together I just think "upholstery." MO wears lots of pattern, and wears it well. But this one overwhelmed her - and that is not an easy thing to do. Maybe because it's a suit? Maybe the jacket with a solid skirt or slack would be a better, younger and more MO look. But this? Uh uh.

Mrs. Obama is doing it right. She repeats letting folks know that it's okay to do it. She recognizes that we are in a recession and it is a nice jester to shows she understand. I love her for that. She's the sister I never had........ Love you Michelle.
