Mrs. O Brings Motown to the White House

Photo by Charles Dharapak / AP Images
The first lady hosted a student workshop featuring Motown artists in the East Room of the White House today. "The Sound of Young America: The History of Motown" is the latest in a series of White House music events. Participants included singer John Legend, singer Smokey Robinson, Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. and Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli.
For the occasion, the first lady turned to a metallic dot dress, with a ruffle front detail and floral brooch at the collar. Update: Mrs. O wears a J.Crew Fall 2009 dress.

I like very much. Classic Mrs O.
Beautiful, as always. I love our First Family and pray God's blessings and protection over them. Mrs. T, I luv, luv, luv this blog!
Thank you soooo much Mrs. T......................Finally the drought has ended and what a gorgeous end to it.
Phenomenal woman that she is indeed!!!!!
Good to see her back! Being busy doing what she does best; opening up the White House and looking fabulous! Like the dress.
She looks amazing!
Great dress! And Mrs. O has worn it before? When/where?
Here is a glimpse of what she is wearing at the concert. I love the accessories and make-up is on point! The blouse makes her waist very tapered and is flattering.

this looks like last fall's jcrew dress.
Lovely!
miss t, I am thinking the same. I did a quick search and couldn't find it online. But, it looks very familiar!
This dress is photographing way more gold than in this snapshot: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/24/michelle-obama-history-of-motown_n_827920.html
Love the brooch. Not so sure I love the cascading folded fabric after seeing the closeup.

I think the dress is JCrew!!
Not liking the side view of this dress because of the fit in the bust area and the tightness around the hips. Maybe it would look better from the front.
The dress is beautiful, something tells me that it is one of Rachel Roy's designs.
Cocktail attire at a luncheon?
Hallelujah!! Mrs. O is back!! I had a look at the link provided by Canyongal and the dress is indeed photographing gold. Lovely dress!
@Evangeline - the photo you linked is amazing.. MO looks great at the performance and also in this picture - glad she's back !
I love metallics on Mrs. O. She shimmers!
After the fuss about the red dress, Mrs. Obama seems to have withdrawn into neutrals. She looks lovely as usual, yet I miss her pop of color.

I'm with you. That folded fabric thingie looks like an afterthought. Love the dress fabric, though.
I agree with the poster who questioned wearing a metallic dress to an afternoon function. Seems like the dress would have been more appropriate at the evening event.
I cannot understand why anyone would want to be the only one in the room with bare arms!
Where is that new stylist?
She wore pants to the concert; here is a glimpse

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-ZvNIYLins This video is awesome: Just watch the first few minutes for Mrs. O giving her speech at this event in all her shining glory. This is one GLAM gold dress!!! It sparkles!
Mrs. O was wearing a jumpsuit last night according to HuffPost! I love this woman! So fashion forward!

When I saw some pics on Huffington Post the dress did seem to be made of a golden fabric than pewter. I guess it depends on the lighting what colors will be amplified. Our Michelle has the body to wear sheath dresses and they really look good on her.
On a much different note, and this probably is not the forum for this, I must admit that I am disappointed at the lack of actual Motown artists that were there to represent Motown. I grew up on Motown, born and raised here in Detroit, very first concert that I went to was The Motown Revue, so I am at a loss why there weren't more Motown representation. Diana Ross is still alive as well as all but one former member of the Supremes, some Temptations, some Four Tops, Gladys Knight, The Jacksons, some Funkk Brothers and the list goes on and on but I won't. I'm off the soapbox now!
Anyway, I'm anxious to see the special when it airs. I saw a glimpse of the black outfit that our Michelle wore at the concert and she and Jill Biden looked really pretty. Gettyimages has a shot of our First Granny and she looks spectacular singing and swaying to the music!
Mrs. O looks great and John Legend is so handsome! :O)
She really represents well.
I agree, Charlene. There are many Motown greats who are still alive and made such a HUGE contribution to Motown, even their widows or children would have represented them well. The people that attended, well some of them were not even born when the Motown greats were bedding down and making African American music what it is today. Smokey & Stevie Wonder do not represent Motown in it's enterity. Yes I am dissappointed with the line up but still have mad respect for the President & First Lady.
I completely love the dress. Classy, elegant and timeless, just like Mrs O.
She should have invited Stevie Wonder, so he could have sang "Isn't She Lovely"
