A Royal Visit

Photos by Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images

First Lady Mrs. O and daughter Sasha met with King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia and Princess Letizia of Spain at the Marivent Palace in Palma de Mallorca, Spain earlier today. More to follow on this amazing mother-daughter international fashion moment!

Update: As suggested by several in the comments section, Sasha Obama indeed wears a darling crewcuts ensemble, including the Girls' tulle skirt, Girls' silk swing tank and Girls' neon flower pin. Love!

Mrs. O's skirt is confirmed as Moschino.

I love Mrs. O's blouse and color of the skirt for this casual afternoon meeting. But I would have loved to have a slight kitten heel with the skirt though--but hey, she's still on vacation.

Thanks Mrs. T for highlighting our adorable little Sasha. She was so poised and cute for this afternoon lunch. Age appropriate yet extremely stylish--I love it! Here's a link to the arrival:

Thanks so much for this post, Mrs. T! I love the summer palette of both Mrs. O and beautiful Sasha. Elegant yet casual. Mrs. O looks stunning, as usual, and I love her blouse. Looking forward to more details!

Mrs . O looks fab! Elegant and casual at the same time! Sasha is the prettiest, cutest little girl with her charteuse skirt paired with the melon colored top, with flower broche and cute pearl bracelet. I cried when i viewed the pics. I am so proud of our First Family. Mrs. T, thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is charming. Simple and casual elegance.

I love Mrs. O outfit especially the skirt I love it. And little Sasha looks adorable such a little trendsetter. Everyone have a great day. Thank you Mrs. T(B) for posting these beautiful photos.

Sasha is wearing CrewCuts's "girls' silk swing tank" and "tulle plié skirt." What a fun and bright color combo!

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 11:25 AM | Unregistered CommenterLiz

I love Mrs. O's blouse, but I'm a little iffy on the skirt. It's made of that material that automatically wrinkles, which totally gets on my nerves.

For me, this trip has definitely been the Sasha Obama show. She is the cutest thing ever and she looks TOO ADORABLE in that last pic.

Here is another video of them meeting the Royals.

Sasha is an absolute doll. I hope she had a memorable time in Spain with her lovely mommy.

Too bad they're headed home to a country that demonizes her mother and father despite all they do for the citizens of this country.

All the ladies look lovely but little Miss Sasha takes the cake! I wish I was 8 so I could wear a tutu skirt...it is just so adorable!!

Sasha for the win!

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 12:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterLainie

Mrs O looks cool and summery. I love that blouse. But I have to say, it's Sasha who steals the sartorial limelight here. She follows her Mom's cues with that brooch and bracelet, but that adorable shirt and skirt ensemble is whimsical and something only a girl her age can and should wear!

This is a nice emsemble. Loving the way the First lady and First Princess are co-ordinated in salmon pink, swept back hair and stud earrings. I just want to hug little Malia, she looks so girly and cutesy with her pearls and flower brooch. Other posters have mentioned how refreshing it is to see little girls looking like little girls and not mini adults and she looks so divine.

Does anyone know who the designed the white shirt/blouse? I've been looking for something similar for the longest time. I like that Mrs Obama is wearing a blouse with a big white bow on her last day in Spain, like she did in Prague. I believe she said that she was giving a big bow to Prague in thanking the city for a wonderful trip. I may be wrong, but I'm sure I read that on another website. With that in mind, I love the way that she gives thoughts to her wardrobe every time she is visiting dignitaries.

I like Princess Letizia's dress as well. Very elegant.

This trip has been a complete success. Yet again, Mrs Obama has done the role of First Lady and America proud.

Thanks for the video, Nyon. I was so touched by the way that Malia stood back as her mother greeted the King and Princess. I know she was probably told beforehand about protocol but she's only NINE. She handled herself like a true lady. The President must be beaming from ear to ear.

Malia's met a King, Queen AND Princess in one day. Must be nice...........must be nice !

I'm normally a First Lady fanatic and though Mrs. Obama looks fab, I like other readers am enamored with little Ms. Sasha Obama. What a lovely moment for an adorable first daughter! I don't have kids but I can only imagine how important it is to allow each of your children to feel special in their own right. Well her mom has done it and I'm sure Sasha shall never forget this visit to Spain!

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 2:32 PM | Registered CommenterCLB

I mostly agree with all that was said... but, that little girl is Sasha not Malia, lol.
Too cute is she.

For those interested in our Miss Sasha's outfit, J Crew has them on sale! The top is item# 27355 $19.99 and the top is item# 23390 $14.99 and silk organza flower pin is item# 19634 $6.99. Both are available in other colors, but the yellow skirt is sold out on line. It is still available in limited supply in stores. Boy, they sure have some cute stuff for kids and our FLOTUS keeps her children looking like children. I soooo admire that in these days of microwave youth and tarted-up little Lolitas!

I don't know about the blouse, but the skirt is part of the set she wore to the Joint Session of Congress September 09.

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 3:23 PM | Registered CommenterAnagrom

Princess Letizia is something else, I told you! They follow her in Spain like we follow Mrs. Obama. She kind of looks like Cindy Crawford.

That last photo of Sasha shows what a beauty she will grow up into. She looks like a young Raven Simone (from the Cosby Show). But for now, what a delightful child she is. The FLOTUS must be so proud.

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 3:37 PM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

@ Liz, I'm sorry that I did not see your post earlier......no need for me to repeat your info!

Wow, our Michelle and Sasha sure has done us proud in their visit to Spain. Even with all the broo-ha boiling and broiling here at home, it is refreshing that they were able to be great ambassadors for the U.S. and looked darn cute while doing so!
@ Anagrom, that indeed looks like the Moschino skirt that was part of the suit that she debuted at The Joint Sessions meetings. She also wore it with an animal print cardi last year when they walked to church last October. I love that crisp white shirt, they never go out of style. I sure hope they had an enjoyable vacation. This is one of many memorable events in Sasha's life that she will treasure!

I think that Mrs. O and Sasha look like the perfect mother/daughter duo.

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 3:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Crockett

Mrs. O continues to delight me wth her choices but my star of this trip is definitely Miss Sasha. She totally lives up to her secret service code name in her darling little outfit. She is adorable, and truly looks as fresh as a rosebud in early bloom!

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 3:51 PM | Registered CommenterAsereht

I can't decide if I like the top Mrs. O is sporting. Like the front, hate the bow in the back. Her whole look reminds me of Mrs. Cunningham from Happy Days. But really it doesn't matter, because Sasha is the scene stealer du jour! She is a beautiful young lady with a great sense of style.

Spain is a beautiful country. Mother and daughter looked sweet and beautiful.

sweet...I'm so choked up! and I just loved all y'all's comments....sasha is such a darling lil princesss!

I just saw some more pics on Gettyimages and my heart is melting. This was indeed Tthe Sasha show! There are pics of her and Michelle getting out the car and on their way to greet The King, Queen and Princess of Spain. She could not be any sweeter if she tried!
On a fashion tip, with closer inspection, I doubt that this skirt is the one from the Moschino suit as I stated earlier. I looked back in Mrs. T's archives and while the color and silhouette is similr, it looks like a totally different material and it has pockets. Still, all in all, both mom & daughter look nice. But didn't daughter just steal the show!

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 5:34 PM | Registered CommenterCharlene in Detroit

Aw, what cuties. They all look great -- and wow, Letizia looks HA-mazing. I'd love to see a close-up of that necklace.

What was happening in the beginning of that video posted by Janelle? Where was that naval officer trying to take my Sasha??? Hands off, buddy. Grrr.

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 5:35 PM | Registered CommenterChristina

Very nice representation of the US. I am just sorry that Mrs. O's skirt let her down with the wrinkles. Still, she was regal and the baby ghyrl showed the world what a princess she is.

Ok everyone, this below picture just melted my heart. The First Lady and Sasha are back for a South Lawn birthday BBQ for the Prez this afternoon after he played basketball with pros like Lebron, Dwayne Wade, and Kobe for wounded troops and WH mentees at Ft. McNair (closed to the press--they had to wait in their vans for 2 hours, hehe!). The First Lady got back hours ago to attend the birthday party.

Here's a link of our beautiful Sasha and First Lady greeting the President (they're all wearing white like they should be on a beach--gorgeous):

Sasha, absolutely adorable!

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 7:01 PM | Unregistered CommenterPJ

OMG...I read through the posts before writing my own thoughts about lunch w/Spain's royal family. Thanks Janelle for the info about Mrs.O and Sasha's return tonight. I had heard that there was going to be a BBQ at the White House but I did not know if they would make it back in time. I can't wait to go to the link that you posted.

I went through the photos at Getty before coming here. Loved Mrs.O's top more than the skirt. But what a mother/daughter duo!!! Sasha was such a show stealer at the luncheon. She is so adorable. Cute outfit and a sweet & warm smile to match. The royal family seemed to melt in her presence. :)

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 7:09 PM | Registered CommenterAnn_T

Next to Letizia, Mrs O cannot compete, I'm afraid. Now it's understandable why us Europeans cannot understand Mrs O as "queen of style". She has nice clothes but nothing spectacular I must say. Letizia really puts the bar high up. She looks splendid. I don't know what Michelle was thinking wearing silver flats to meet the king and queen. I know Sasha is only a girl, but the same applies to a yellow tutu skirt!

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 8:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterChar

Totally agree with you, Janelle, that a slight kitten heel would have made the look a little better. I think she was trying to be understated and casual and she succeeded, but maybe a little more than I would have liked. Still the color palette she has going on is very lovely and as everyone has noticed, Sasha stole the show. She's really something and I am so impressed with how she handled herself meeting royalty.

With regard to Janelle's last comment with the flickr picture of the happy 3/4 family reunion, that was so sweet. I love how they are all in white and how happy Sasha looks to be hugging her daddy. I've always felt like she was the bigger daddy's girl of the two. She always seemed to be hanging off of him whenever she could.

I hope Mrs. T uses that picture as a separate post. (hint hint ;-)

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 9:27 PM | Registered CommenterIVA

Janelle, you beat me to it. I can just imagine Sasha running into her daddy's arms. I love the dress Michelle is wearing. So simple and summery. Definitely something I'd wear.

not the same fabric as the Moschino skirt

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 9:48 PM | Unregistered Commenterjack

The first time she met a queen she wore a cardigan and some people gasped. This time around she wears a pair of comfy flats and now some utter that this was not the right choice. I love this woman because she is so daring and unique. And she makes it quite clear that her sartorial choices are not decided by a committee(a group of chatty busy-bodies).

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 9:52 PM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

@Char

Michelle is NOT for you to understand. We LOVE her in America, and she is OUR American princess, and so are her daughters. Michelle is down to earth and and that is why Americans have feel in love with her and the Obama family! In America European Royalty are just regular people, we do not fawn over them like they are better than others.

Anway, I love FLOTUS white dress in the flickr picture, and I know that they cannot wait for Malia to come home this week.

@McKinley

That is why I love her too. Michelle dressses the way SHE feels, and she does not dress to impress others. Michelle is her own woman!!! Many "women" should take notes.

Mia Monte

Everyone is happy to love whoever they like. I just don't see where's the elegance that people say she has. To me she looks plain normal. I see tourists in the streets of Spain wearing exactly the same as Mrs Obama in these pics, so I'm only saying I'm not impressed.

I am not sure I like the skirt. The blouse is fabulous. I

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 10:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterHelen

"Next to Letizia, Mrs O cannot compete, I'm afraid. Now it's understandable why us Europeans cannot understand Mrs O as "queen of style"."

It's a good thing, then, that 1. clothing choices are not a "competition" and 2. Mrs. O isn't a "queen of style," she's just a normal American woman doing her thing, dressing her way. And I love her for it.

I don't know much about Princess (Queen?) Letitzia, but I assume she's an accomplished woman with many interests -- much like Mrs. O. -- and not really interested in "competing" with other women over something as relatively unimportant as clothing styles. I certainly don't need to tear her down to support the first lady, and I don't think the reverse should be true.

As for wearing flats, I think she makes that choice so she won't tower over people.

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 10:09 PM | Registered CommenterChristina

Why do I sense that we've had a sudden influx of Spaniards to the board? :-p Hola, amigas. We like your Princess, too. Please don't fight over her.

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 10:24 PM | Registered CommenterChristina

Sorry Char; this European disagrees with you. both ladies look lovely in their own way, with their own personalities and their own style and Sasha looks very European, a mon avis.

I smell it!!! It's all in the air. LMAO at these ...... ;-)

Anyway, Thanks Janelle for that pic. That is definitely a precious moment captured in time. And boy do I wish I could have been at that basketball game!

LOL @ Christina with the "hola, amigas!" That was good.

Yes, it seems we've got some people dying to discuss Fashion Face-off or whatever. Sorry, no one is playing that.

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 10:59 PM | Registered CommenterIVA

I love Michelle, but this skirt is terribly unflattering.

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 11:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterColumbia

Maybe we can agree that they are all nice people, and hope they had a pleasant time today. As I recall, the King and Queen were close to Princess Di, who many of us admired.

Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 11:44 PM | Registered CommenterGroovy

Janelle, thanks for the link to that precious photo! She is Daddy's girl, for real! You know the POTUS is happy to have his girls back home! Malia must be missed but these separations are good prep for when they go off to college.

I think Princess Letizia looks like a young Cindy Crawford. She is followed in Spain for her fashion much the way we follow the FLOTUS. I predicted it would be interesting when the two met.

The last picture of Sasha makes me want to cry. She is growing up. She reminds me of a young Raven Simone. She's just beautiful. Standing next to a King and Queen doesn't phase her one little bit!
