Feeling Groovy

Image by Jewel Samad / Getty Images

The president and first lady were out for the second evening in a row on Martha's Vineyard. For tonight's dinner date, Mrs. O chose a loose-flowing, multi-print tunic dress, paired with black leggings and flats. Gold bracelets, earrings and a slim clutch completed the bold, easy-going look. It's fun to see Mrs. O play with a different silhouette and style while on vacation. What do you think?

Update: Mrs. O is wearing the “collage dress” by the London-based Nigerian designer Duro Olowu, known for his luxurious fabrics and vibrant prints.

The First Lady's dress is niiiiice. It's got that hip, batik and ethnic thing going on. I appreciate the energy and independence of her style--even when I'm not wowed by some of her choices. Like the leggings worn here. I think they "dampen" the otherwise stylish and casual look shown here. And the flats are nice, but I think sandal might've worked better. ...No matter, in the end, I think MO's style is quintessential!

Not her usual, but she has been known for upsetting our expectations. Once I took time to consider the dress, and, more importantly, her happy and relaxed expression while wearing it, I found that it suited her quite well. The color combinations play up her lovely expression, and it truly is a vacation choice. I don't know about the rest of you, but during vacation, I luxuriate in my ability to take on a different style, to wear things I don't ordinarily wear. Mrs O is never our of our view; she is rarely able to take a day off and remain beyond the public eye. Even so, to her great credit, she always looks good.

Very nice outfit for vacation! Nice to see MRS O in a style that will set a new trend. Very fresh looking. She never stops amazing me.

I love the photo and I love your caption, Mrs. T!

It is quite a different look, isn't it?

I know she's been at dinner two nights in a row but I really wish her tops were more form-fitting. Shirts and tunics can have shape without binding. Sorry, not a fan. Also did not like the shape the NR black & white gave her last night but she's relaxed and enjoying time with her husband so whatever. I'm just stating my opinion like Mrs. T asked so please, ladies, don't go mean girl on me.

Ok, I'm going to chill for several hours with the September issue of Vogue that hit the newsstands today. Halle Berry is on the cover and she looks INCREDIBLE.

I love the title you chose for this photo. Very appropriate. Please, don't anyone take this as an insult, but Mrs. Obama's dress confirms my belief that she has an "inner hippie." I love it!

I'm going to be honest here and say I don't care for this particular outfit at all...With that said her hair looks nice and she seems to be happy in the photo.

While Mrs. O. certainly has the gams to be wearing this outfit, I think that leggings and trapeze-style dresses like this one are best left to the under-40 crowd.

Nice Nice and Nice. Love u lots

I think she's stunning, whatever she wears.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 4:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterJudy

I love this tunic and leggings. Yes, it is a silhouette that we haven't seen on her but I love it. lI adore the gold bracelets. The President has dressed it up a bit and looks fine. Does anybody know what restaurant they visited? Or who made her tunic? I want this tunic!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 5:29 AM | Unregistered CommenterSusan

I'm not feeling this frock, I don't like the print or design but I am feeling the love between the President and his wife and that counts for a lot more.

I can dig it very groovy and bold!

A nice pretty i don't really care dress. Flattering? Not particularly but we all need and love them.

Mrs. O looks like a sack of potatoes in this dress. Not flattering at all!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 8:27 AM | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

I like it!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 9:30 AM | Registered CommenterSoccerNana

Yeah, cool, relaxed, casual. She looks good!

I love this tunic!

I like this cool, easy bohemian look. It is perfect for vacation. I really like the prints and colors on the tunic, too.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 9:55 AM | Registered CommenterLisa H

I like this, very casual and comfy looking - perfect for the rain last night. I feel bad for them with the weather they've been getting... hopefully it clears up for their last couple of days!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10:04 AM | Registered Commentermincey

Love the dress but could do without the leggings. They look too heavy for summer.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10:06 AM | Unregistered CommenterDCliff

This is a really cool Bohemian look. I don't know who the designer is, but it reminds me of some pieces that Anna Sui did a few years ago. I like that our Michelle kicked it up with a pair of leggings and some cute flats. If I'm not mistaken, those flats look as if they could be animal print. Anyway, perfect vacation look.

Very cool and bold

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10:15 AM | Unregistered Commenterdalejamaica

Sorry, but I disagree. While she generally looks absolutely stunning, this look is not flattering. The dress looks kind of like a bedspread. I'm not a fan.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10:34 AM | Unregistered CommenterSarah Elliston

I don't think it's terribly flattering in those pictures, but I also feel like it's really not for public consumption, so who cares about my opinion? :-) I like the gold bangles.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10:53 AM | Registered CommenterChristina

I like the dress very much. Is it a Duro Olowu by any chance?

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 11:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterSewing Siren

i love this dress does anyone know who the designer is?

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 11:20 AM | Unregistered Commenterpeggy

Comfy in her own skin, Mrs. O. makes her own fashion statements.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 11:52 AM | Unregistered Commentermarcelle

Where does she find this stuff? This is fantastic, reminds me of a Carole Little dress I still have from several years ago. It has this amazingly off beat, I'm on vacation and I mean it look.

@Cincinnati kid, the few times I've seen the president irritated during interviews is when he gets asked about his clothes. Somehow I don't think he is going to accommodate those of us wanting him to be so much more dapper!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 12:22 PM | Unregistered Commenterdasie

Michelle wants to reflect on her roots , the mother land of Africa. This outfit looks like it originated in Africa, I just love it.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 12:55 PM | Unregistered Commentermaxine S

Well .... I am going against the grain here ... I don't like this outfit. But I still love Mrs. O's style! :-))

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 12:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterMichelle Huggs

Very few people can wear contrasting styles and still be simple and coordinated. This makes a statement without screaming.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 1:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterLaVonne

Mrs. O is causal but elegant and chic. Really relaxed and suitable for her vacation.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 1:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterMaureen Smith in Jamaica

Love it! What a confident choice! She looks fashionable and trendy and fun. You know what I love the most? Seeing our President in flip flops and sandals. A man who loves to bare his toes. Just love them!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 1:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterKatie

Ummm, the dress is not my style, but Mrs. O is rocking it nicely.

I'm don't know if you guys have seen this pic, but it is the MOST ADOREABLE PIC EVER of the President and Sasha.

What an attractive looking couple. FLOTUS look radiant....

Uh, can anyone say MOO-MOO? Those sleeves! Yikes! but hey, one misstep in a year and a half....that's a good record.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 2:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterDRE

So not feeling the love on that one.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 2:03 PM | Unregistered Commenterfoo

This look is very different! Quite the hippyish...60's and 70's look. It's cute on her! Nice bracelet, too!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 2:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterMs. M

ummm. its a moo moo... a very pretty moo moo... but it's still a moo moo.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 2:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterMr L.

Absolutely gorgeous; she wears this outfit beautifully.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 2:49 PM | Unregistered CommenterDonna Nickson

If I had Mrs. O's figure, you wouldn't catch me covering up like this! ;)

The President is dressed a bit unusually too--striped shirt. Don't we usually see him in solid color shirts? Seems like he usually wears darker colors. He looks quite nice here.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 2:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterColumbia

Funny, a bohemian out with a square!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 3:10 PM | Unregistered Commenterjenh

looks like DURO OLOWU

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 3:19 PM | Unregistered Commenterbear

It's not my favorite, or perhaps it's just not a flattering photo, but you can't love fashion and not take risks sometimes, so good for her! It may have been a bit more flattering if she nixed the leggings and wore heels, to counteract the looseness of the dress's silhouette. I do love her gold bracelets, so fun!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 3:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterSMS

Not fashion, but this is my new favorite photo of Barack and Michelle. It's from the White House's Flickr photostream.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 3:26 PM | Registered CommenterHyde Parker

First of all, I LOVE the link to the pic of the President and Sasha.... ohmygosh, it's adorable. All girls should be able to have that 'thing' with their dad. I've seen my dad and me in pics over the years, and I think we had that 'thing' too.... nice.

Now, about Mrs. Obama - she is just too cute! I'm not a fan of the so-called Bohemian look, but for those who can pull it off - Michelle Obama who can pull off just about anything... - cool!

I'm just glad they are having this fun relaxing time as a family. No matter what the world thinks, after all this is over they will just be "The Obamas", hence it's important that they take the time along the way to preserve what will remain...

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 3:28 PM | Registered CommenterCLB

Hyde.. thanks for the photo of the Obamas... what a photo.
