Feeling Groovy

Image by Jewel Samad / Getty Images

The president and first lady were out for the second evening in a row on Martha's Vineyard. For tonight's dinner date, Mrs. O chose a loose-flowing, multi-print tunic dress, paired with black leggings and flats. Gold bracelets, earrings and a slim clutch completed the bold, easy-going look. It's fun to see Mrs. O play with a different silhouette and style while on vacation. What do you think?

Update: Mrs. O is wearing the “collage dress” by the London-based Nigerian designer Duro Olowu, known for his luxurious fabrics and vibrant prints.

Here is a pic of Mr. & Mrs. O today. She is looking cute and casual.

@ Nyon, you should've posted a three hanky warning or a waterproof mascara alert before you referred us to the grass roots pic. I cannot help but tear up! I visit the Obamadiary website daily, just like I do here. How did I miss that one? It is beyond adorable, makes me REALLY miss my dad even more. Gosh, it is such a sweet photo. Timeless!

What makes me gigle in most of the pics of the Obamas are the 'secret service'. First, I'm a total fan of the secret service - I totally respect the jobs they hold and what they do. The joke is.. why do they always have to look so MAD!! :):)

Anyway, love the links to the Huffington Post pics - cute watch to go with cute Michelle :)

Thx Nyon.

I LOVE this look. So fresh & perfect for the beach.

I don't think the SS (!) folks look "MAD", I think they're trying to look stern and forbidding, in the direction of any crazies out in the crowd. Just the way I want them to come across to any pinhead who might be lurking, thinking he can get away with something!

The innocent folks won't even notice the expressions turned their way, but the guilty-conscience crowd probably would.

I kind of like the "bohemian" tunic... although I'm not quite sure the grey "chain mail" section coordinates as well with the other fabrics as some other color or pattern might. Maybe it looks different in more light!

LOVE it...comfortable and chic! They really are such a beautiful couple. They complement each other well.! Hope they've been enjoying the Island food!! Still don't know why they haven't tried a Wicked Kickin' Savory Cheesecake, though. Everyone's gotta try one when in the area!!! But, there's still time. Hopefully they'll check out www.wickedkickin.com or http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1277391904#!/group.php?gid=107451334369 It's such a great story on how we started. Our story really represents everything President Obama and The First Lady are trying to accomplish during these tough economic times. And, she'd probably enjoy our cheesecakes even more because of her "Let's Move" iniative. Regardless, hope they have a memorable vacation!

Love this look! So avant garde for our thoroughly modern First Lady! Love the fabric of the trim on the top.

Not such a classy look.. and she always look classy.. if not for the beautiful accessories and her hair pulled back, this outfit will be way off.. Pieced together clothing gives an air of poverty in general in my opinion (ie not enough fabric to finish the project..)

I adore her style and the confidence with which she wears ANYTHING..

Thank you, Nyon, for that beautiful photo of the President and Sasha. It says it all...about their father-daughter relationship, their closeness, and the way they relate to each other. But more importantly, and this may be the most telling of all, this shot was natural, not posed. nor contrived. It says a lot. Nyon, thanks for sharing.

Love these two (Obama 2012) but I am not feeling this look on Mrs. O. There is something missing to pull it together to that chic level. I don't know what it should be as I am not familiar with the nuances of bohemian style. As is, it just looks thrown on at the last minute. Sill love her tho!

We have a "smokin" hot first lady!!! I thank her regularly for bringing the dress back .

Does anybody know the designer for the jacket President Obama is wearing?

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 9:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterWL

Unfortunately, it's a designer muumuu!

Olowu designs some funky pieces. Color-Pattern-Combo, he is not afraid of.

Lovers of Fashion, I think he is the one that designed Mrs. O's quirky jacket with the pockets hanging below the hem.

You're welcome ladies!! It really touched me and I knew it would touch some of you as well.

Mrs. O looks fantastic. the dress is by Nigerian born, London based fashion designer DURO OLOWU who FLOTUS has worn before. just love how she mixes it up and is so clearly at ease in her own skin. that is really the defination of true, timelss style!!

Oy...I'm not feeling this one, AT ALL.

@ CLB,

I like your statement that "it's important that The Obamas take some time along the way to preserve what will remain". This is so true, not only for The Obamas, but for all of us. We all lead such busy lives these days (for whatever reasons), that we often forget to take a timeout to spend "quality" time with those most important to us. Before we know, that precious time is gone, lost forever, and cannot be recaptured. So it behooves us all to take a page out of the Book of Obama and spend time with our loved ones because when it's all said and done, that's all we have.

I'm sorry. I usually love her clothes. I think this is one of those times when her husband was thinking, "Really?! Maybe we should just eat in!"

i. want. that. dress. Mrs. O. looks fab!

I love it! Call me a sentimental old hippy, but I love it!!!

Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 9:23 PM | Unregistered CommenterMartha

The leggings ... in August in the Vineyard ... not so much ... and that dress/tunic just makes her look like a hippie potato sack ... not my favorite ... but her smile, that makes it all perfect!

My first impression - Love, Love, Love!!!!!!!

I had never heard of Duro Olowu before, so I looked him up on www.style.com. He has some fascinating and colorful designs. Women of all ethnicities would look good in his clothes. I look forward to seeing more of his stuff. Very nice, indeed!

From reading the comments, one thing is coming through when it comes to style we all have our personal taste. I think what matters most is how the individual feels in what they wear. Mrs. Obama is obviously one who likes to experiment.

I will not criticize her choice but for me I would have left out the leggings. Notice I said for me.

Anyway I love the fact that they seem so in sync. Just a great couple.

To address the commenter who was worried that describing Mrs. Obama as a hippie was a slur, well my mom and dad were both hippies. They fought in the Civil Rights movement and the environmental movement and they still stay politically involved. At least their generation did something with their lives beyond the scope of their own interests. I admire them tremendously.
But on a lighter note, I like this outfit but not on Mrs. O..It's wearing her rather than her wearing it. I do enjoy seeing her fashion sense evolve though, even with these minor mistakes. This is a throwback to the days when she overdressed and didn't understand the power of metaphor that clothes can provide, It's a hard line to walk.

IF this tunic had not had the pink and gold flowered hem band AND it had ended just above the widest part of her hip) it would have been a home run.
