The New Power Suit

Image by Win McNamee / Getty Images
First Lady Mrs. O hosted a "Let's Move" event at the River Terrace School in Washington, D.C. today, joined by Olympian Shani Davis and several other Olympians and Paralympians. Mrs. O led students in a series of exercises, giving new meaning to the term "power suit." For the event, Mrs. O dressed in a vibrant red pant suit, paired with a pink and red sequined camisole.
Update: Mrs. O wears the Sequined starland tank from J.Crew, available here (thank you canyongal for the find!).

can't wait for the state dinner in May for an overdose of mrs. o glamour! glad to see she's working hard to improve the fitness of our nation and reduce the obesity of our kids. keep going Mrs.O!
very, very cute combination and a great color. Would love to see the pants and shoes!
I love her with bangs. Cute, cute, CUTE top - I must know whose it is and if it comes in other colors!!!
Cute photo.
Cute video--thanks Sharon Nelson--and Mrs. O looks wonderful, healthy, and fit in her beautiful red suit!
I am Super Woman!! I'm actually loving Michelle's pantsuits!
Oh no, not a red pant suit! I honestly cannot like that. It looks fine on Mrs.O but is is just too
Hillaryish. I think Hillary owns the pant suit look.
Char M.
Hopefully a full length pic will come soon. She wears red well, as expected for her skin tone. Look forward to seeing the full outfit before I comment. Oh and I see that she went back to the other hair. Not loving the blouse she is wearing inside though. Sequins? For sports? Not sure about that one.
Too cute. The suit is beautiful.
That video was too cute for words, good job Sharon! FLOTUS is truly delightful and comes alive when around children. What a treat for the school. That scarlet red suit looks really nice on her, the fit is great and that little sparkle on the cami is sharp. I like this!
here is a full-length picture of her in the suit.she looks very sharp.

I love her some much is so warm and full of life and energy.
Nice love mrso red suit she looked good and the pic make her look tought she strock this pose before. Mr Obama surposed to join her but couldn't make it.
What a beautiful color on her ! I am so happy she takes the time to visit the children in DC and the surrounding areas ... I am sure they will never forget!
Mrs. O looks great!
Looks like the J. Crew Sequined starland tank to me.
These colors look so nice on her.
Hey Groovy I agree - great colors for her and that does look like the J. Crew top.
That's a great series of photos chrystelle, thanks!
I really love the cami, and I think it's a nice way to add some pizazz to the suit. The outfit is a good look for her! I wouldn't mind having one or two of those cami/tanks in my wardrobe -- I'll have to check out J. Crew online!
But, why go in a pant suit....why not go in an exercise suit, ready for the action to follow? She is going to see children...to play with children...to exercise with children...why wear a stuffy pant suit? She should wear something that she would wear when playing and exercising with her own children. Make it real. Make it something that every Mom can achieve...no need to be a fashion plate in this instance. She would look just as good and not as out of place as she does in this forum in these clothes.
She is so lovely, she takes my breath away. I absolutely adore Mrs Obama, she fills my heart with such joy. She totally rocks!!
Oh, I forgot to ask my question. Would anyone suggest wearing a neckalce with this outfit since the cami has a lower cut or is it not necessary because of the sequins? I ask because I'm so horrible when it comes to accessories. In looking at the picture I began to ask myself if I would have worn a necklace -- mainly since my friends get on me sometimes because I tend to under-accessorize. So, my question is less about whether or not the First Lady should have worn a necklace but would any of you had done so? Also, when do you know whether or not to add a necklace? I guess there isn't a rule or right answer, huh? I look forward to hearing someone's opinion on this. Thanks in advance for taking the time! :-)
i absolutely adore mrs.o.
LOVE HER RED SUIT SHE ROCKS PINK TOP THATS CUTE LOVE HER SHOES TO

It is a Neon Quartz Starland Sequin Tank by J. Crew. Probably will be sold out by the morning! LOL! Other cute colors include navy black, gold peach and pewter.
Love a subtle sequin top in the day! This added just the right amount of sparkle!
LOVELY!
This is a beautiful pantsuit, and the fit of the slacks is absolutely perfect. Soooo much better than the grey trousers.
This colour is simply divine on Mrs Obama. I'm feeling this whole look in a big way especially the wide leg pants. I feel that Mrs Obama always looks good in wide leg pants like the Azzedine Alaia ensemble that she wore in Europe last year. What more can I say ? The bob hairstyle is glossy, healthy and bouncy, the cami top is a perfect contrast. She looks happy, healthy and radiant.
Like Eleroy, she takes my breath away.
Only this FLOTUS could or would do this. Michelle rocks and rules! I can't imagine any other FLOTUS ever having the presence and sense of self that she does. She is a role model for this age.
She is truly something spectacular.
Passionate. Mrs. O is beyond fabulous. Confectionary looking tank top is playful and fun and great around the children. Will be in a wardrobe forever, and ofcourse can be passed on to the little ones. Amazing suit, love this colour the fact that it can be worn to so many events.
She looks good in every color!
I love the red pantsuit. It fits her perfectly. Not so crazy about the fit of the tank. I think showing cleavage at daytime takes away from the look.
Caveat: I love Mrs. O., so please don't think I'm being snarky, but I think the tee is too low cut. More modesty please.
here are new picture of Mrs.O at today event. she look great. i love her pea green and pink combo.she looks very summery in my opinion.

In response to Wanda's comment - If the campaign is called "Lets Move" then I believe that any attire works. One should not have to stress about appropriate footwear and clothes because it's just another excuse to avoid the need to move.
Let's face it, Mrs Obama was not running for the marathon or do anything majorly sporty. Her suit looks great. It works. She often dresses down when meeting kids but it's nice to portray a profesional dressed woman from time to time as it sends a positive message to the children.
Mrs Obama truly inspires me with how she lives her life, the contribution she is making to America and her fabulous clothes. I could sit here and click my "refresh" button all day to keep up with Mrs Obama and her fab life.
BTW, Accidental Lobbyist, I definitely do not think a neck chain is required with this outfit. If the top was plain then a necklace would have looked nice but the sequins on the cami are accessories enough ( in my opinion). Basically when your outfit is plain dress it up.
I like the color combination and think Mrs.O wears a pantsuit very well.
I disagree with Wanda's point about wearing something even more casual becuase its child's environment.
She is the First Lady of the United States & I don't like the idea of her going anywhere in sweat pants and a tank. I think there is a certain level of sophistication the world expects from powerful women and jumping around with Juicy Couture or PUMA on your clothing does not cut it..
She looks completey appropriate for the type of woman she has become. Now maybe Sarah Palin would look appropriate in a pair of sweats and sneakers !
Char: But Hillary would never have worn a low cut sequin tank top
Wanda: Maybe she had somewhere to go afterward, like lunch. Or maybe she had decided to wear red and doesn't own any red workout clothes.
Well, she certainly looks better in the J. Crew tank than that bony little J. Crew model. Yay Mrs O! Yay for all REAL women with a REAL physique!
Whenever Mrs. Obama's events involve or are centered around children, her attire is always festive. Like the outfit. Her top is so cute! It reminds me of the Valentine's Day heart-shaped candies (pink and white), red hots, and the button candy streamers all in one.
@ lorns. Really like your critique. Playful and fun, is exactly what I see.
In my eyes, Michelle Obama can do no wrong. I'm just so proud to have this woman as the First Lady of these yet to be United States!!..
Yo Go Lady Obama!!!!

Wanda, take a look at photo # 2 of the slideshow on this link: http://www.examiner.com/x-19673-Michelle-Obama-Examiner~y2010m4d21-Michelle-Obama-hosts-United-States-olympic-and-paralympic-athletes-at-the-White-House
Mrs. Obama can move in this as well as anything else she could have worn. She looks appropriate, sharp and modern.
The video here shows her shoes: a comfortable stacked heeled metallic (muted gold?) They look nice with this outfit. The shape and color of this pantsuit is very flattering on the FLOTUS.
Thanks Anagrom, Loved the video!!!!
I like the suit and I think the shirt is real cute.
Accidental lobbyist, I think it would be ok to wear a delicate necklace with this shirt, nothing to gawky or chunky because the shirt is already the focal point. Or maybe some long dangling earrings might even be better.
@ Accidental Lobbyist - i probably wouldn't wear a necklace with this outfit, mainly because the color is so bold and the sequins are pretty much the main accessory already.
I usually wear necklaces when I'm wearing a somewhat bland shirt, simple stripes, or a solid color. I tend to stay away from my necklaces when I'm wearing a busy top, and I'd call this top busy, even though I love it and plan on buying it to wear under my boring suits. This is right up my style ally.
Thanks, chrystelle for the link. I'm digging the high-waist pants. She looks approachable, yet polished and classy still. I saw part of the Q and A with the kids and they were adorable asking their questions and screaming "Bo, Bo, Bo!" when she indicated they would bring Bo out for the kids to pet.
Accidental Lobbyist, I have some suggestions for you as I'm a fanatic when it comes to belts and accessories. I'll write to you later on this, but when in doubt, stick with 'neutral colours' and blend them with your 'skin tone'. We're seeing a lot of accessories this season. Don't be afraid to throw in that necklace, or even scarves. I love chokers and for Mrs. O's outfit above, even just a simple gold necklace would go just fine. Clear lucite chain links are big this year. I should have mentioned, earings are my passion.
Mrs. O's great body makes the clothes because on a fuller figured woman her age, some of the outfits would look like a Grandma at the airport on the way to visit her grandkids in Florida. Seriously. e.g. The Easter Egg Roll and the one she wore today to Take Your Sons To Work Day. I should work out like her and all my clothes will look better.
Accidental Lobbyist, the sequined top is busy enough. No necklace needed, just like Mrs. O went without iwith this outfit.
