Supporting Women in Jason Wu

Image by Robyn Beck / Getty Images

The first lady is a keynote speaker at The Women's Conference in Long Beach, California today, hosted by California First Lady Maria Shriver. For the speaking engagement, Mrs. O wore a custom sheath dress with gathered leaf print chiffon bodice by Jason Wu, paired with her signature Alaia belt at the empire waistline.

The focus of Mrs. O's speech at the conference was support of military spouses. Per USA Today:

"While most of us don't experience these struggles to the same degree as military spouses – that nagging sense that you're falling short at work and at home, that tendency to worry about and care for everyone but yourself – these things are universal," she said.

She recalled a military wife in a discussion in Kentucky who was brought to tears detailing her stressful life when another woman jumped up and said, "I don't know this woman. But when she leaves here, she will have my number and she will be able to call me any time. She's got the support of this friend right here."

Obama brought the point home saying, "It is what we do for our sisters, it is what we do for our girlfriends, our mothers and our daughters. We show up. We show up at the door with some food. We show up at the door with some chocolate. And if things are really bad we show up with a bottle of wine. We, as women, know how to reach out. We know how to support each other. And the question is: What can we as women do to support our military spouses?"

Love it!!

I prefer this look than with the sweater that she wore the previous time she wore this.

I liked the previous hairstyle though-fuller at the bottom of the hair cut.

Either way though it's a great dress!!

The First Lady looks (Tony the Tiger *roar*) grrrrrreat! Again, "form" as well as fashion--as I said in a previous post. (And Maria looks good as well, as always. Yet, it'd be nice to see a change from the "Barbarella" hair every now and again.)

(a tangent) ...I was just thinking: I cannot begin to imagine another potential First Lady (on the horizon) who will be as iconographic (stylistically, speaking) as Michelle, after she leaves the White House--in 2017 (hopefully)! I mean, it took us 40-plus years after Jackie O. to get Michelle O. And when you add in Lady O's pedigree and policy initiatives and alluring personality, the next First Lady will have quite a few pairs of "shoes" and Jason Wus to fill. ...Oh, well...back to the present. Let us all enjoy Mrs. Obama while she is--(and we are)--in the moment!

I love Mrs. O, but I think it's time for her to retire that belt!!!!!! Over worn is an understatement!

Finally, I loveeeeeee her hairstyle. Just gorgeous. I really like this outfit minu "the belt". I don't know why i hate those belts.
The side looks of the outfit with this belt is very disappointing . check this pics, http://theobamadiary.com/2010/10/26/mm/#comments

I love this dress and the belt works with the coloring of this dress. I did'nt even know it was her favorite goto belt.

Mrs. O looks great as always. It's amazing how much taller she is than most of her peers, yet she is so graceful!

A First Lady to behold!!! Smart, warm, grounded, self-assured and very much her own person. I love that she eschews the schmoozing and social climbing with the self-appointed society types - so common amongst politicians and political wives. I love how she stays true to self, sustaining and nurturing old friendships and positively inspiring young, old and disadvantaged alike.

LOL - I particularly love the way she sticks it to the belt brigade by wearing again and again this fantastic belt that practically drives them insane! I LOVE this woman!!!

This is my favorite Jason Wu dress that our Michelle owns. I just love everything about it and she looks radiant in it. Well done!

I saw this photo on the Daily Snapshot from The White House but I couldn't see the detail on it so this is the dress I really wanted to check out today. It looked like it was going to be fabulous and it certainly is! Love how the top bit is so light and fresh that you don't get a "oh another black dress" feeling from it. And I love seeing that belt reworked and reworked. Beautiful hair, make-up.... just beautiful.

I agree with Marcus. I don't think anyone else can do what Michelle Obama has done. And if they can, I'll be mesmerised all over again.... but there's no-one on the horizon who could even come close.

@ Nic John - "The side looks of the outfit with this belt is very disappointing . check this pics,"
I should have known better, but for some reason I was expecting to be disappointed but I can see nothing wrong with the side view of the outfit.
All I see is pure HOTNESS on the FL. She looks ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!!!!

@ Nick John,

You need to fix whatever it is that ails you as it relates to the First Lady and her belts. It seems as if you have a deep-seed dislike of these belts; what's your problem. At this point, after almost two years you should get used to her belts by now and just stop your incessant harping about your dislike of her belts. WHO CARES? Find something else to focus on; your commentary on these belts have become redundant and stale, so move on!

Hey Trinisamba, as a regular you should know by now never to click on any link posted by "Nic John" or any of "its" incarnations.

Hope you're enjoying married life!!
