Ladies in L.A.

Image by Jae C. Hong / Getty Images

The first lady joined Dr. Jill Biden for a fundraiser in Los Angeles to support Senator Barbara Boxer last night. For the event, Mrs. O wore a textured white sheath dress, paired with her signature metallic kitten heels. Dr. Biden turned to a forest green frock, featuring a sheer panel through the shoulders, and quite impressive heels!

On a shoe note, fans of Mrs. O's heels of choice may enjoy "Michelle's High-Heel Revolution" by Isabel Wilkinson of The Daily Beast, here.

Update: Mrs. O wore a cream peony jacquard shift dress by L'Wren Scott.

Wow these 3 ladies all look SO nice! Jill Biden's outfit is the winner here, what a great color and that design on the top is so cool. Also her shoes really make the outfit. Michelle's dress is lovely and also a great color, but it looks too tight thru the middle thus all the bunching up.

I'm sorry, but Mrs Obama's dress just doesn't fit well. She could use a better tailor.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 11:56 AM | Unregistered CommenterJane

I agree, Dr. Biden is the clear favorite. Michelle's dresses have been quite tight these past few weeks on the campaign trail. Not good......

Yes, Mrs. Biden's heels are quite impressive. All i can say is, "Jill, you go girl!"

Yuk! I've seen Michelle make much better choices than this. Not flattering at all.

Gotta love it - First commenters, all about Jill Biden.

Both look fine in their sheeth dresses. Not sure if there is a competition I forgot to read about. Since I'm on Mrs. O.org, I will comment on Mrs. O's white patterned sheeth dress. I love how she's REMINDING folks that the whole idea of not wearing white after Labor Day thing is OLD NEWS for the most part. Mrs. O's figure is banging, so of course, she's rocking the sheeth. Her hair looks short, which I like as well. All-in-all, this is signature Mrs. O and I like it.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 12:19 PM | Registered CommenterIVA

I have to add that this reminds me of a recent post where someone was so badly looking to diminish Mrs. O that they pointed out some obscure woman in the background of the picture, who was wearing some frumpy green sweater. Anything to diminish Mrs. O, I suppose.

Mrs. O. looks AMAZING!!! Seriously the lady ROCKS! Green with envy

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 12:29 PM | Unregistered Commenterari2

This dress is too tight on mrs O. It is a nice dress.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 12:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterHelen

Oh how I love these women! They're are both powerful and secure enough in themselves that neither casts a negative shadow on the other (no matter how hard some might try to pit one against the other) and their fashion sense proves that. FLOTUS and SLOTUS looks extraordinary in a sheath dress. It's always good to see them work together. AWESOME!

Both women look terrific and I'm thrilled Mrs. O is on the campaign trail.

She has the highest approval rating of anyone in the Democratic Party.

Even though I like the style of the dress Mrs. O is wearing - something about the color is not so hot.

Dr. Biden's shoes are terrific

I, too, disagree with the need of some to make comparisons. They are both delightful in their own rights and are not running in a contest. Here is a link to a photo from Ellen's show to be aired on Thursday. They are discussing military families. Two very different looks and wonderful things can be said about both.

It's a pretty dress. What makes it look different is the length, we are not accustomed to seeing our First Lady in a dress so long. Otherwise, the style, and fit are fab.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 1:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterACE

Wow Dr. Jill Biden, looking so cute. I really love..... those shoes. I saw Jill's pics on Ellen show, again she looks so goregous I love her dress.
Michelle's dress nice too, but it looks too tight.
Dr. Jill has this slim and tiny body, so cute. I can't belive she nearly 60 years old.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 1:50 PM | Registered CommenterNic John

I see a lot of disparaging things from these pictures that I could say about Jill, but I won't because I dislike that kind of a discussion.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 2:06 PM | Registered CommenterSharon Nelson

All three ladies look awesome!

What I do find funny is how certain people try so hard to disparage Mrs. O by comparing her to Dr. Biden, and the Ladies are friends.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 2:21 PM | Registered CommenterSoccerNana

With the utmost respect, I didn't interpret the first few commenters as trying to "diminish" FLOTUS. Michelle definitely looks well put together, as she always does (hair, hair, makeup, accessories, etc.). However, my eyes were also biased towards SLOTUS dress. Not many women can rock forest green the way she did, that's all. I don't think everything has to be about competition. As you've clearly presented beauty or more like fashion is in the "eye of the beholder". I think it's fair to say that everyone is not going to like every single outfit FLOTUS wears; and as beautiful as she already is, there are going to be times when she'll be pictured with another woman who looks as equally put together or better. All in all, I agree with you that both FLOTUS and SLOTUS look great in their sheath dresses. However, while both dresses are similar in silhouette, I prefer SLOTUS for the color and design at the top..plus the shoes. I'm aware that this is MrsO.org, but I think posting pics of Mrs. O with other women, it's fair game to comment on others in the pics...just my respectful opinion.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 2:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterLissie

Both Dr. Biden and Mrs. O look GREAT in sheath dresses, but Mrs. Obama's dress is too tight-fitting here.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 3:03 PM | Registered Commentersailorsgirl

Michelle's dress is too tight but I love the texture.

Lol at folks getting mad people are comparing the three ladies in the photo. Isn't that what this site is for, to discuss and debate what we see in front of us?

Exactly.

Word of advice to folks getting worked up over negative or lovingly critical comments from folks: let it go.

They won't change their opinion and it's a waste of your time to try.

I see folks get jumped on for the slightest negative comment as if Michelle herself is offering a free WH tour to whomever defends get the best. Totally unnecessary.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 3:38 PM | Unregistered CommenterMica

The First Lady looks "okay," here. No "oooo!" or "wow!" This look wasn't her best effort. Still, she passes sartorial muster--here and any day on the campaign trail. Same for Dr. Biden and Senator Boxer; "okay." With the exception of SLOTUS's shoes. Now those are slamming!

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 4:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterMarcus Perry

There is an old saying: "If you have nothing good to say about someone, it is
best to say nothing at all."

If these negative bloggers feel need to create a blog for Dr. Jill Biden, then do so. You just
don't speak ill of someone on a site devoted to complimenting that person. It is clearly in poor taste.

These are two lovely ladies who clearly work well together. Sorry, but this is just my point of view.

Iva:

I have winter white that is worn in the fall/winter.

I don’t wear “white” after Labor Day which to me means not wearing: white linen and summery looking
white. I am one of the people that have put away their white pocketbook, shoes and linen.

I don’t judge those that do wear summery white; because if they like, I love it. It’s just not for me or any in my circle of friends!

It is hot in NY and I am still wearing some of my pastel colors (not summery white though). I also like colors other than black, blue and grey during the fall/winter months. I buy different colors specifically for this time of year (pinks, creams, baby blue, etc). But, once you look at the fabric, you would know that they are not to be worn in the summer!

Sharon Nelson, could you please re-post that url? It's running off the column, and even searching and searching separately on the Ellen show site, I can't find the picture(s?) you referred to? THANKS MUCH!

I was there!!!!!!!!! I was in the front row and it was an AMAZING night!

Look, I have to say that the "tight police" have a point, but I was there in person, and her dress was fitting! She was rocking her curves! She doesn't hide behind shapes and fabrics that conceal her shape. Rather, she reveals her shape and what a shape it is!

I can see that if you come from a different time and place, you would feel that her clothing is too tight. To each his own!

I will say this, however.....Her speech was inspiring, heartfelt, impassioned! She is an amazing public speaker and her charm and demeanor just shine through. She is truly a natural at speaking her heart and mind.

By the by, I wore a coat that was the exact same pattern as Mrs. O's dress!!!!!! I also wore a red Calvin Klein sheath dress and kitten heels! And homage to Mrs. O! And I could have sworn that she looked at me a few times!

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 5:36 PM | Unregistered CommenterMichelleToo

Her skin glows no matter the outfit. A tailored fit looks best on her. This is too tight. Her message, however, is always spot on!

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 5:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterCharlotte

Nice to see the "too tight" police out in force. *yawn*

The first thing I thought when I saw this picture, was how incredible both Mrs O and Dr Biden looked, and how completely uninspiring the beige suit in the middle looked.

I really do hope that the dreaded trouser suit on women in business/politics (Hillary Clinton, Angela Merkel, this lady, and others) will (please I am prepared to beg) die a quick and unapologetic death SOON. There are not many people who can carry it off. Short women who do not have excellent proportions really gain nothing by wearing them (Hillary Clinton, Angela Merkel, this lady, and others.....) Why not a dress and coat? Do not pretend that you are not a woman. Do not apologise for being a woman. You ARE a WOMAN!!! Celebrate it.

Anyway, I love Mrs O's jacquard dress, fabulous fit included! And I'm loving that wonderful green on Dr Biden. Such a great colour.

If there was a shoe competition, I think we all know who wins. *does a little we-are-not-worthy at Dr Biden*

I think that all three ladies look great. Each is wearing a color that I would wear - forest green and winter white. Sheath dresses will crease when sitting, so no, Michelle Obama's dress is not tight and Jill Biden's dress does not show the same creases because of the dark color. It really does not matter because they both look gorgeous. I can't see the details on the shoes, so I can't speak about either pair. Barbara Boxer? I love shades of brown and I like pantsuits. So, to me, she rocks as well.

Although this site is dedicated to our First Lady, Michelle Obama, I am really pleased when both of our ladies are featured. They are a dynamic team. Thanks for this picture.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 6:48 PM | Unregistered Commenterbusbus

I was at this event too -- in the 10th row with a very good view, plus a lovely woman sitting next to me let me use her binoculars. Dr. Biden is absolutely gorgeous -- much more so in person than photographed. Michelle looked beautiful -- and when she spoke it was really to the heart. Barbara Boxer also looked great (if not fashionable) and really communicated with the audience. If it was possible I think the women leaving this event would have partipated in a group hug -- really proud to have such compassionate, beautiful women as our leadership.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 6:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterDeborah

LOL!!! It's so hard to keep from laughing out loud when the "critics" in their various incarnations all show up to nit-pick Mrs Obama while gushing about the most generic item worn by any other person in the picture with Mrs O.

IVA, I too couldn't stop laughing when I read that post a while back wanting to know about the very horrendous 80's style green sweater on the random woman in the receiving line!!! That was all I needed to know about that particular poster who always waxes poetic and seriously grandiose in her utter bull****!!! Not that any regular on this site wasn't already on to her. LOL!!!

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 7:45 PM | Registered CommenterEleroy

The dress looks too long and too tight across her lower body. The light color may emphasize this in pictures more than in person. Dr J looks amazing. Who makes her platform heels? That nude color makes her already long and slender legs seem to go on forever. As to the pantsuits, even Nancy Pelosi favors high fashion pant suits. I think the standard is different for elected officials versus unelected, but public, spouses. If Barbara Boxer's wardrobe became the signature issue versus her policies, that might be a problem. Pelosi has repeatedly maintained that she favors Armani outfits that her husband chooses. But then she is very wealthy and other politicians may not have a high-end clothing budget. People may expect to have their elected officials (who are their employees) dress in a more corporate style. I don't expect my senators to be fashion plates. The first and second ladies, however, are free to express their "lady-ness" and I believe their looks are less than spontaneous and more like carefully curated images though they undoubtedly bear an individual stamp.

I had to go back and check because I missed it but that is really funny. God how pathetic....!!!! Thank you IVA and Eleroy. ;-)

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 7:55 PM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

Mrs. O's dress is too tight, too long, too pale and the wrong shape for her figure, albeit a smashing figure. This has happened often enough that someone on her staff who assists her with dressing should take notice.

Mrs. O has a short waist and it really shows in this garment, ergot, the reason she probably uses a lot of belts to provide a more complimentary silhouette and mediate her height. I believe she is going for the same effect when she wears full skirts and empire lines.

She is too beautiful and in the daily public limelight too often for these kinds of glaring mistakes to continue to be allowed to happen. Her staff/stylist/tailor/dresser or whoever assists in this area is not serving her well.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 8:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterJacquie

@ jersey girl - I agree with what you're saying re: linen and other summer-type white clothing. I was basically pointing out that Mrs. O is showing that one can wear white after Labor Day, if it's the right type of white. Some people still think that "no white after Labor Day" is a blanket rule.

@ Mica - I am personally not trying to change anyone's mind with my comments on here, but something I stand by when it comes to blogging and making comments on blog is that if you say something, be ready to stand by it and be criticized for it. So, I'm just calling it like I see it. Some folks are tripping over themselves to declare Dr. Biden a "winner" of some style-off in their head, and it was an interesting and curious thing that I chose to note in my comments.

@ Eleroy and Posh - so glad y'all caught that. It truly had me LOL'ing when I read it originally. I swear I looked at the picture and searched for anyone other than that random woman because I couldn't understand how that woman's outfit was worthy of a shout-out. But, like I said, it's all about doing ANYTHING to diminish Mrs. O, for some folks.

I think the color of MrsB's dress is eye catching with those...Ooh so fantabolous shoes....Love me some MrsO this week tho.

What I like about the joint public appearances of these two women is that they really support each other and in no way try to compete. At the Womens Conference beforehand Politico was billing Jill's speech as the main event possibly because her PR is better than Michelle's and the info came from her and Politico likes to twist stories when possible. As kind of an after thought, they mentioned that Michelle was also speaking. When the event came down, Michelle was the main speaker. Sometimes I suspect that Jill may harbor feelings of insecurity in the combative atmosphere in Washington, but Michelle is very good at realistically building her up.

Also on those shoes. Yes, Jill's shoes are impressive, but can you imagine Michelle in such shoes? She already towers over all the short people she appears with and would also tower over her husband in such shoes. Not a thing we want to happen.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 10:54 PM | Registered CommenterSharon Nelson

Having read some of the above comments, I now remember why I have not visited the website or commented on any Mrs O outfit (good or bad) in recent weeks :-). That being said, the dress is to tight and I do love Jill Biden's heels because I am a heels girl and I find nothing wrong with complementing Dr. Biden.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 11:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterNora

She hit it out of the park with the Jason Wu yesterday because it had a dark skirt and the emphasis was above the waist. The length (see Huff Post pics) was perfect. It was one of the most stunningly perfect looks to date.

This dress today is wrong on many levels. You can say what you want but it is TOO TIGHT and the length is all wrong. She looks like a tall cartoon character, all stretched out. It may go to the tailor's when all is said and done or maybe to the back of her closet. Sorry but this is a strike out. A BIG one.

Sharon, thank you for sharing the insider perspective which I find to be quite spot on. I've always been extremely distrustful of Politico and thought their motives rather suspect. I stopped clicking or reading them a while back as I'd just had enough.

Mckinley, I too think Mrs Obama always looks great in L'Wren Scott. L'Wren is as tall as Mrs O and her designs reflect familiarity with great fit/proportions for taller women.

The ladies look lovely. Mrs. O's dress is a little tight and a bit long, but she looks great. Being on the road is tough, she has a three hour time difference, irregular eating, no morning exercise, and water retention. Despite all these thing she looks beautiful!

Both Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden look great and are working their modestly, form fitting dresses! I must add...that their work-out regiments are working well, too...look at their arms and figures...so well toned!

Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 8:05 AM | Unregistered CommenterMs. M

I think L'Wren Scott knows how to dress tall women, and gets the proportional dynamics that occur. The jacquard is beautiful on the winter white. IMO winter white is "yellower" that the pre-Labor Day whites, and of heavier fabrics. I have a velvet white short, unconstructed jacket that has been in my closet for almost 20 years. It has always worked well throughout the years.

I envy you who were able to attend this event - what a trio of power and passion!

Dr. Biden is ROCKIN'!!!

I like the First Lady's dress in general - but I agree: it's too tight causing bunching around the middle and flattening her bust. I would have loved to see this dress on her in another size.

As for making comments that are not favorable, I thought that was what this website was about? I generally love what the First Lady wears and am very proud that she is representing this country.

But if the dress doesn't fit, it doesn't fit.

MichelleToo, I was so glad to "hear it" from someone who was actually present - in the front row, no less - to "see it"! Thank you for sharing that live, close, and personal, from your perspective, the too tight-for-some-dress was actually fitting, and clearly accentuating the First Lady's shapely assets! Oh, to have been there, alongside you!

Setting style and fashion gently to one side, thanks also for your words on her speech. I simply cannot wait for the First Lady to reach India, where her charm will no doubt make people there fall for her, just as heavily as they have elsewhere!
