Remarkably Fabulous

First Lady Mrs. O is attending the opening ceremony of the 121st IOC Session at the Copenhagen Opera House this evening, wearing a gold dress with fitted bodice and full pleated skirt, adorned at the neck with a trio of brooches. Gold accessories and a soft chignon give the look an extra dash of polish.

This ensemble has officially taken our breath away. Head to toe fabulous!

P.S. Any ideas about this dress? We thought it might have been Isabel Toledo, as suggested in the comments, but that's not the case. We must know who designed this beauty!

Update: It is confirmed, Mrs. O wore an orange lame pleated dress by Rodarte. Hooray!

Dress: Yes. Brooches - not so much on this outfit.

Mrs. Obama has some 'gimmicky' things in her wardrobe. They work sometimes, but she tends to overdo them.

I'm glad to see the bold color though. That she does well.

whaouhwhaouhwaouh!
I often critised negatively Mrs O 's toilet but this one is very stunning! a small detail: is she wearing a stocking or not?

No wonder the President himself is following suit.He can't let his queen out of his sight for any length of time, lest the likes of Silvio Berlusconi come drooling after her. Good luck to the Chicago bid.

I just LOVE her hair up. The first time I saw it that way, I thought it was short and it looked great.

I love this look on our first lady - she looks elegant and relaxed at the same time. It is so wonderful to have a first lady who is helping women see all the options for dressing for various events.

Ginger - I haven't worn panty hose since they were on a list of the "Top Ten Clothing Items That Make Women Look Older". What a relief to throw my collection into the trash. I buy tan in a can and use that along with tights in the winter. Michelle has beautiful toned legs that are always gorgeous - she certainly has no reason to ever wear sheer hosiery.

She looks stunning in Gold as she's going for the gold.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 5:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterMB

After three blah outfits in a row, Mrs. Obama has stepped it up big time for Chi-town. Yes! This dress is a winner. I like the gold symbolism. It looks great against her complexion, and her outfit says, "Chicago is a winner, we want these Games, and we're going for the gold to get them". Great choice!

I'm not feeling the brooches near her neck (one brooch to the side would've been fine, three is overkill), but her hair and makeup are on point as usual. The dress makes up for the brooches.

I wonder who is the designer? Isabel Toledo? Michael Kors?

WOW, I sat back in my seat when saw this outfit, simply amazing. Michell O'Fabulous hits it out the park one more time.

According to Robin Givhan of WAPO

"Michelle Obama arrives in a pumpkin satin cocktail dress - full skirt, sleeveless and with criss-crossing straps in the back. No, it is not a warm evening in Copenhagen. But there is no weather in a motorcade."

Pumpkin? Is she the fashion editor of the WAPO?? Perhaps she would rather be covering the war in Afghanistan? I wonder why she used that word, pumpkin.... Sounds like she is envious that she is not in the motorcade.

Would love to see a pic of the back of that dress.

Love it! Very feminine and glamorous. She also looks like she is having a great time.

I'm truly in awe and totally speechless by the US First Lady Michelle Obama's SUPER BEAUTY, ELEGANCY, CONFIDENCE, YOU NAME IT. Just only one statement though to summarise all this guys. THIS IS MICHELLE OBAMA AT HER ROYAL SELF. PERIOD!

@Julie

Robin is VERY envious of FLOTUS, she has been since January. I was turned off by Robin when I first read about her on huffo in January. SHE IS ALWAYS SNOTTY!!

To some it's "gold" and others "pumpkin," but my favorite is the Danes' "cognac."

I've been visiting this site since last year but have never posted a comment.. However I just had to post as this exquisite outift is soo fitting for MO, she looks so ethereal, and simply stunning...

I was absolutely gobsmacked by this color and look initially, but after seeing the whole thing from several angles, I can agree with some of the points made by Canyongirl and Kate.

I love Mrs. O and her boldness, tough.

Mrs. O looks stunning. This outfit is a real winner!

Simply, elegantly, breathtakingly beautiful! I usually just check the site without commenting, but this dress demanded that I sign in and give our first lady her due. This is without a doubt one of her best outfits ever! American women everywhere should be so proud that we are so well and fashionably represented on the world stage. What a great time to be an American woman!

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 7:44 PM | Registered Commentermspoint1106

Pumpkin?? Pumpkin....that no account nofo needs to get her eyes checked out! I love how the haters feel the need to get their digs in.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 7:48 PM | Unregistered CommenterThatOtherMimi

@Julie, I totally agree with you that Robin Givhan is jealous! Most of her articles are either demanding MrsO do this or that, or sound condescending. I cant stand her, so I dont read her crap! Cudos to Mrs T for putting her in her place at their last appearance @Today.

BTW, Love The Dress! show us more MrsO.

Ciao

Now that's how everyone should go to the opera these days. Epitome of class. Stunning, Gorgeous, I'm running out of words.

This first lady is tops in my book. She looks Magnificent. Hot, dignified, classic and oh so perfect.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 8:12 PM | Registered CommenterEleroy

I like the description "pumpkin." It does seem to be a richer color than gold. (Disclaimer: I am a Robin Givhan fan.)

Michelle wears three brooches at a time routinely, as a substitute for a necklace. For me, the three brooches are working. I can understand why people might not like the A-line skirt because it is a youthful look. But, I feel like this same dress in a more figure-hugging color might look, mmm, I don't know. "Gold" and "tight" can be a leetle bit on the tacky side.

I'm not saying ALL gold, tight dresses are tacky, but I think that I understand why she might want a different look on this occasion.

This really is just a lovely dress. (imo)

Love the dress on her. GOLD on this one!
As for the brooches, I have made myself understand that this is a Mrs. O signature look. Not a fan of her wearing them like this, but I have come to tolerate them.

If anyone wants to watch the Chicago presentation to the IOC (including hearing Mrs. O), it can be viewed live at www.olympic.org starting at 2:00 am EST, per Politico (uugh too early). They're up first and have 70 minutes and a Q & A after. I'm setting my alarm, popping up to watch and back to bed I go.

Sorry to post this on the main thread but I need someone to doublecheck my times. The IOC site says Chicago starts speaking at 8:45 GMT+1. Politico has 2:00 am listed with the Obamas speaking at 2:50 a.m.....someone please correct me if this is wrong. I just loathe listening to media soundbites and want to watch it in its entirety.

Jazz,

Thanks for the great picture. I loved the commentary that said she "glittered in gold."

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 8:48 PM | Registered CommenterWillow

My lips are on STUN. Drop dead gorgeous. WOW. Just had to register to say that. Can't believe how lovely she looks in that dress.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 8:55 PM | Registered CommenterBuckfoot Buckfoot

The dress she wore for the endless photos with the G20 representatives was pumpkin.

This dress is bright gold - even has a sheen in most photographs.

I am not keen on crinolines, especially if they are in a distractingly different shade and hang unevenly below the hem of the gown.

I do not consider Robin Givhan to be a fashion guru. She just likes to sound chi chi.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 8:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterBeeGee

Just had time to read more of the thread.

"Cognac." Now that's good! Even better than the bright gold that I tagged it.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 9:01 PM | Unregistered CommenterBeeGee

Ari, thanks for the sesame Street video. The first lady is a natural and her hands and nails are always so immaculate. Such perfection.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 9:06 PM | Registered CommenterEleroy

The Danish media describes this dress color as "Cognac". Quite apt.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 9:24 PM | Registered CommenterEleroy

Beautiful, and - as always - she managed to make it her own. I think the brooches are stunning. They are a bold look (especially the size of them) but this is a bold dress. Are those the same bangles?? I don't think so - they look like gold metal, and her others are clear stones set in white metal.

I didn't agree with the references to Mad Men in regard to this afternoon's blue print look, but this is definitely a tribute to that era. I remember my mother in these full skirted dresses in the 50s, and I even wore them in high school.

This is definitely a full skirt - it's not even close to an A-line.

@Christina - I had to laugh when you pointed out TBG helping her out of the car. This morning he was on the front page (above the fold!) of the NYTimes. It was ridiculous, with all that is going on in the world, that I notice TBG above all else. I know he's important (doesn't begin to describe it) and VERY VERY serious, but I hope he's getting some little kick out of this notoriety. His mom must be thrilled!
