Shades of Blue

Pool Image / Reuters

First Lady Mrs. O met with IOC President Jacques Rogge in Copenhagen this morning. For the official meeting, Mrs. O wore a skirt and jacket, both patterned in swirls of ink blue and cinched at the waist with a navy blue velvet belt.

Update: Thanks to a tip, we've learned that Mrs. O's ensemble is Thakoon, a Watercolor Gazar jacket and dress from the designer's Resort 2010 collection. Click here to see pieces in the same print.

With this look, I'm definitely feeling the smooth transition from summer to fall. Will she wear knee high riding boots in the upcoming months? Hope so.

how beautiful, the blue shades coupled with the deep blue velvet belt just make the whole look so put together...

I am liking the new wardrobe of Mrs.O

Beautiful. She is glowing. I love the side swept bangs on her.

Is that a collar or nifty construction from the shoulders down? Either/or it is cool.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 11:58 AM | Registered CommenterBevi

Colors and print are beautiful . Her makeup has more of a pink hue/tint that is so very pretty on Mrs. Obama. But the constant belts are so disappointing and so unnecessary. Wish to see more sheath dresses and a nice tailored jacket once in a while.

I do have some "curves" the same way Mrs. Obama has. And for the longest time I did the full skirts, the empire lines to "hide" my curves. Maybe Mrs. Obama feels more comfortable with less fitting wardrobe pieces. But she looks just great wtih fiitting clothies!!!!!

OH IS A SKIRT AND JACKET IS LOOKED LIKE A DRESS TO ME BECOUSE THE WAY MRS OBAMA PUT IT TOGETHER THER THAT BELT AGIAN AT LEASE IS NOT A BIG ONE. YOU GO GIRL THEY WILL WIN THE BID HER HUSBAND WILL BE THERE SOON TO BID TO CANT WEITE GO CHICAGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This kind of large circular neckline, along with a the v-neckline, is very flattering on her. And yes, this is very Mad Men but modern at the same time. Love it. The pattern almost looks like autumn leaves.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 12:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterTracy

Mrs. T It's fascinating to me how you are able to find out who designs some of her dresses, when they are sometimes not available on the runway. It seems like Jason Wu and Thakoon have made a lot of custom pieces for her that would be hard to find and are often not available for months. Now thats good investigative work! I'm guessing this is Thakoon because of the print and the detailing at the neckline.

BLUE DELIGHT

Not only does Mrs.O get it, but she goes beyond the natural into the subconscious. Let me explain.

Blue is the worlds' favorite color - all shades. Blue is also the ONLY colour that maintains it's character in all its tones. Blue affects us all mentally and physically, and is known to be -
* Calming and sedate
* Cooling
* Aids intuition

It's the colour of the ocean and the sky! Most of all it is seen as trustworthy, dependable and committed - all the attributes that Mrs.O wants to subconsciously communicate with this Olympic bidding committee. It's such a smart and witty choice...talk about going for the jugular!

I am so very impressed!

The blue is fabulous; and the fit is great for Mrs. O.
What is the Mad Men look? I've never heard that before.

Love the pattern of the suit. The makeup and hair are on point.

She's doing that empire waist belt thing again.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 12:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterKate

mrs O look so pretty in her oufit.i love how creative she is and the way she combines unusual color and give her outfit the pep it needs.
MJMR, i don't think mrs O feel more or less comfortable in one outfit or the other.she mixes a lot.this site will be boring if she only wears sheath dress in every color.i love her for her versatility.she shows women how to be daring and bold in their choices.

greetings from germany

I think she looks better in solid colors, but I do like the blue against her skin and agree with ROCKY about all the characteristics of the color "blue".

Her hair and makeup look great .

Looks like she had about an inch trimmed off recently, she rarely has a bad hair day !

Michelle, please, I beg of you...you don't have to write in ALL CAPS. You see that no one else is, right? Just regular typing is fine, it's easier to read and doesn't LOOK LIKE SHOUTING!

This is one cool outfit. I'd love to see how it looks with the long jacket off. Ireally like everything she's worn on this trip! That pattern-on-pattern gray outfit gave me pause at first, but really, she can carry it off.

another outfit that does not photograph well!!

someone please provide Mrs. Obama with some help!!

I love her; my only reason for commenting is to help her present herself in the best possible manner She's a stunning woman who is not being well served by her stylist.

Girl crush!!! Mrs O is a FASHIONISTA!!!

It looks like a Tracy Feith.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 4:21 PM | Registered Commenterboazwife

No one on Mad Men would wear a belt like that. They rocked the hourglass. Check out their blog on AMC and look at their wardrobes. My eye went straight to the belt in this pic, which is not what you ever want. You want to wear the outfit not have it wear you. Please don't start on the hate comments, just look at the photo. I'm calling it like it is. Our beautiful FLOTUS should NOT do the Empire waist.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 4:28 PM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

canyongirl, just for clarification is that your opinion about the belt or is it a statement of fact.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 4:55 PM | Registered Commenterboazwife

I am feeling those gold pumps. I'd like a pair.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 5:24 PM | Unregistered Commenterglammie

Boazwife, Canyongirl is stating her opinion just as you stated your opinion. And I'm about to state mine: I'm not feeling these prints on Mrs. Obama of late. The outfit isn't horrible, but hardly wow either. I've resigned to just not being a fan of the prints that Mrs. Obama picks (and I like prints, but just not the ones that she usually picks). It's probably from one of the designers in her lineup that I don't like on her.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 5:47 PM | Registered CommenterMara

Okay Mara, I was just checking it sounded like an assertion of fact.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 5:52 PM | Registered Commenterboazwife

Love the outfit in the many shades of blue, ..... Hair and make-up on point, the pearls perfect,......just think the belt is an unnecessary accessory here.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 5:54 PM | Registered CommenterTsetse Johnson

I am in complete agreement with Canyongal and Mara. The eye is drawn straight to the belt, and just as a matter of opinion, the print is very "old-lady," which Mrs. O. certainly is not. I have loved all of her looks in the past couple of days, but this one is a miss.

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 6:24 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

As always, she looks LOVELY!!!

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 7:13 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

LOL @Rocky, I now think differently about blue all of the sudden.
Great look MrsO! Those yummy metal pumps are to die for and I need a pair ASAP!

I love this outfit. The citizens of Copenhagen are getting a real treat. Michelle showed up in one of my dreams about a month ago...and I swear she was wearing those same gold shoes.

I dreamed she would wear those shoes and now she has. Can we find out who made the shoes? I'm ready to make my first Michelle Obama inspired purchase. No matter the cost.

Does Mrs. O ever wear hose? I read that she struggles with hose (aka panty hose, nylons, stockings, what-have-you) because of her height but sometimes - like Copenhagen in October - you should probably wear them. It's fine to go sans hose in the summer and her legs look great as they aren't pasty white (no one I know...) but they do add a finishing touch and they make really, really shear ones now.

Where can I get those shoes? They are WONDERFUL!

Michelle rocks! I am so, so proud of this amazing woman.

Friday, October 2, 2009 at 1:39 AM | Registered CommenterLota

Choo, choo!! Eleroy, you just can't lay off the "hate comments," as Canyongal requested, can you?

Friday, October 2, 2009 at 4:12 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Eleroy (and others), just take your finger and block out the belt. Can you really say in all honesty that the outfit looks better WITH it? To me, it looks like someone took a Sharpie and drew a thick line across what could otherwise be a very nice take on the matching skirt/jacket look.

Yes, Boazwife, it's all my opinion but I'm as entitled to express it on this blog as you are yours.

On the positive side, the pearls work perfectly (are they light blue?!) and the 3/4 sleeve again, works great on her.

No belt and a longer fitted shell/tank under the jacket or even this belt placed lower and this would have been an A++.

Her makeup has been stunning lately.

Friday, October 2, 2009 at 5:14 AM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

Perfect hair and make-up. I actually like the belt. It pulls the top half together and gives her some sophistication and youth . I feel without it, the outfit could be al ittle dull.

Friday, October 2, 2009 at 5:44 AM | Registered CommenterJoss

Michelle - STOP SHOUTING.

Video of her arrival at Amalienborg palace for lunch with Queen Margrethe... I thought the suit was grey/black but the colours are very rich in Mrs T's chosen photo, above.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gmg4bvTV-I

I really like this suit. It's a beautiful shape - so trim at the top and full in the skirt without adding width at the bottom. A really nice nod to the 50's, I thought. Especially with that genius touch of velvet at the waist. Brilliant idea. Completely enlivens the whole thing. I could do without the pearls, but then maybe without them she looked less radiant. They do add a little lift!

I am, of course, sooooooo nice to see the weird comments back about belts. So refreshing. So new. I'm thrilled. And what's this about empire line? She looks great in Empire line! It works for her height and figure so well. And this isn't empire line. The belt is at her WAIST. I can explain it again in shorter words with less syllables if anyone is still confused.

Friday, October 2, 2009 at 7:35 AM | Registered CommenterPosh Tater

Eleroy you just made me laugh out loud! Couldn't agree more. I think we can add Barbara to the train.... Oh and boazwife thanks for your question - I was pretty sure that was a statement of fact myself!!!

Is this Phillip Lim dress?

Friday, October 2, 2009 at 12:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterAsh

To: Stylishgurl and Ruth Leslie regarding Mrs. O's shoes...I believe these are Jimmy Choo's. They are sharp as all get out and if you know Jimmy Choo, they are just as comfortable. "Jimmies" are not cheap, however, you can find them on sale at some very affordable prices. I've found some pumps that look almost identical to our FLOTUS signature pumps at DSW. Now, this is not a sales pitch nor endorsement of any kind (and NO, I do not work there), but check out: Bandolino's Berry, or Jones New York's Ceceluis Glacine as well as Nine West's Nuncio. I hope this helps. HAPPY SHOPPING!

The print reminds me of a dress my grandmother had, and that belt! Once agin, a straight fitted skirt and a long slim jacket, with no belt, would have knocked it out of the park. Hair and make-up, right on the mark.
