Celebrating MLK Day

This evening the first lady attended the Let Freedom Ring concert at the Kennedy Center to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. Though we can't see the full ensemble, Mrs. O appears to be wearing an embellished black top (or dress) and has debuted a new tousled curl version of her short haircut. Gorgeous!

Update: The First Lady wore an embellished Moschino shift dress from the Moschino Pre-Fall 2009/2010 collection.

Serving in Style

The first lady made not one but two service related appearances today. This afternoon Mrs. O spoke with employees at the Disaster Operations Center of the American Red Cross in Washington, DC., wearing a purple tweed sheath dress with an asymmetrical neckline and three-quarter length sleeves.

Earlier in the day, the first family served lunch at So Others Might Eat in Washington. The soup kitchen opened in the 1970s and now serves more than 1,000 men, women and children each day. Mrs. O kept her look casual, sporting cropped pants, a blue cardigan and her purple Converse as she served lunch.

Happy Birthday Mrs. O

Image by Yuri Gripas / Reuters

Today marks the 46th birthday of First Lady Mrs. O. Mrs. O has been treated with a few celebrations over the past few days, first with White House staffers on Friday, and last evening, with the president and a group of Chicago friends. Last evening the group spent more than four hours at Nora in Washington, D.C.. Lynn Sweet has the full scoop, here. Mrs. O chose a black dress for the fete, topped by a black coat embellished with gold lattice detailing.

Update: A gold star for reader Kathryn, who reports that Mrs. O's coat is Narciso Rodriguez, as seen here.

Below, White House staff closed the week by honoring the First Lady's birthday on Friday. The first lady wore a watercolor print, ruffled blouse for the occasion.

Help for Haiti

Our thoughts are with all those impacted by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The White House advises:

"You can help immediately by donating to the Red Cross to assist the relief effort. Contribute online to the Red Cross, or donate $10 to be charged to your cell phone bill by texting "HAITI" to "90999."  Find more ways to help through the Center for International Disaster Information."

Thanks to reader Bea for bringing this to our attention. Update: And thanks to LeahD to pointing us to Mrs. O's PSA, above.
