Scenes from Hawaii, Part II

Photos by Mandel Ngan / Getty Images

While in Hawaii, the President and First Lady visited the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor (December 29), and toured an exhibition of anthropological work by Ann Dunham, President Obama's mother, on display at the University of Hawaii (January 1). Yesterday, the First Family said goodbye to Hawaii and headed back to Washington.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful start to 2012!

Update: In the third photo, Mrs. O wears a Tracy Reese Border Frock in Black Spades.

I think Mrs. O should have worn the first dress while departing Hawaii and the third dress while visiting the Pearl Harbor memorial. I don't like the first dress- it is too innapropriate for the visit. I see her wearing it to Sasha and Malia's school or to a date night with her husband. As for the second dress, could it be made by the same designer who designed the dress Mrs. O wore to the welcome ceremony at the White House while welcoming Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany and Chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union? It looks so similar in design and fitting!

The black and orange dress and the black and white one are extra nice. Here's hoping we get information on the designers.

All three of these dresses are great but the last one - total knockout. I think I may have a weakness for monochrome though.

wow, I can't decide which of the black-themed outfits I like best! with-green, with-orange, or print! they all look great, and VERY interesting, and I can't wait to see them in more detail.

There certainly was no need for Michelle to "dress up" to visit the Arizona Memorial. It is, after all, a tourist attraction. Yes it should evoke reverence and solemness, but the tourists that were there before and after the Obamas were dressed in shorts, t-shirts and tank tops. He wore a suit;; she wore a summer dress, totally appropriate.

impeccable, Hawaii appropriate, feels like summer photos even though it's Christmas! They look great. I especially love the ensemble at the Pearl Harbor Memorial. It is a very moving place and you can tell that they are feeling it.

ooh, love the dress in the last photograph.

Can't imagine how the dress Mrs. Obama wore to Pearl Harbor is inappropriate. She even covered her shoulders with a little sweater. It is a perfect dress for the occasion. The admiral's wife is far more casual. This too--it's Hawaii where bright colors are to be expected. We all love to look at, and comment, on Mrs. Obama's clothing. However, I don't like to read comments that are super picky.

I agree with Babs.

Looking at the photos of the Obama Vaca, brings back memories of when my husband and I lived on the Island of Oahu and visited the exact same sites. Mrs. Obama gets a thumbs up for her ability to chose clothing that are cool, colorful, and appropriate for wherever there doing. Depending on which side of the Island your on, you can experience a burst of rain and then a rainbow. Ahhh Hawaii. Aloha Obama Family.

love all 3 of her dresses. the first 2 are probably my faves. i'm a sucker for color. but that last dress has a little special something going on with a bow tied at the back. you can see more picks on the Obama Diary's website. i thought each dress was appropriate for the occasion on which they were worn. maybe the first was a little dressy, but i wouldn't have expected her to wear anything less.

I don't care for the first dress at all, but then again, I don't care for colors that have been "neonized," which is why I'm not fond of the top half of the second dress. The bottom half looks great. I think the third dress is terrific! Love the black and white.

Mrs. Obama is dressed appropriately in Hawaii...my husband is retired military and we lived there three years also....her hair and dress is totally appropriate for the climate and weather. It is an island for God's sake. I don't post often, but our first lady is AWESOME!

If only there was any such word as neonized. Or process. It's just neon green.

That orange and black dress looks like DKNY. There is a very similar one at Nordstrom.

"neon green," "neonized".....six of one, half dozen of another. The reason I put it in quotes is because I made it up. I certainly know it's not in the lexicon.

I am in love with the neon green/striped dress! This reminds me of a dress that Todd Oldham did about 10 to 15 years ago. It was constructed with four panels that each had a different print and colors that you would not normally see together. The second dress also echoes that same vibe. Our FLOTUS has a good eye for unique fashions. She likes interesting details and color combinations in her clothes. I cannot wait to find out who made this. Tracey Reese is becoming a staple in our Michelle's wardrobe. This one is really nice!
