New Orleans Bound

Image by Jewel Samad / Getty Images

The Os are headed to New Orleans, Louisiana before returning home to Washington, D.C. after 10 days of vacation on Martha's Vineyard. To board Marine One this morning, Mrs. O paired a white scoop neck tank with a full black skirt and flats. Often when the first lady turns to a black and white palette, she relies on an accessory to deliver a bright pop of color. It appears said accessory, a lime green tote we've seen Mrs. O carry in the past, was borrowed by her daughter Malia for this occasion. Hopefully the Os enjoyed plenty of rest and relaxation while they were away!

Update: Just a few hours later, the first family has already arrived at Louis Armstrong Airport in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mrs. O is wearing a floral dress we first saw almost a year ago in Miami, here.

Nope.

Here is pic of FF arriving in NO:
http://twitpic.com/2jeyrw

Girls are with them.

Also, Pres & FL have changed clothes since leaving MA. Pres wearing a suit/tie and MO having ditched previous outfit (thank goodness -- it was awful) for what looks to me like the Tracy Feith dress (?). Much better. Girls stay in same outfits.

1. wrap skirt/ruffles made her hips look enormous.
2. double layer top made it look like bra straps showing. Sloppy!

I think the family looks great! I am amazed how tall Malia is! She is almost as tall as her dad. I love this skirt and tank on Michelle.

@nonpasserat, do us all a favor and slither under a rock.

I'm sitting here amazed at how in shape she is. She is part of my inspiration of keeping it together. Plus, I know countless women who would kill to have a body as svelte as hers. "Enormous" hips?! The nerve!

Anyhoo! The skirt is right on trend. See Bill Cunningham's(nytimes.com) slide show on black in New York.

@nonpasserat

Snobby people like you make me fall out laughing!! Whew. Oh, and that is not a bra showing that is a CAMISOLE, shows how much you know.

I wish I had Michelle's "enarmous" hips, since her hips are so "enarmous," there would be no need for me to hit the gym twice a week. Anyway I love FLOTUS' flats. She sure does seem to have an impressive flat collection.

Michele is on holiday, and so is her hair, what's wrong with. It only goes to proove, how confident a woman she is. She does not look her happy self in pic. # 1.

I like the skirt blouse combo & the dress. Cute as usual Mrs. O. To Nic, re her hair... maybe you've never had the challenge of thick black hair when you are on vacation... Pulling it back into a bun is normal when you just don't feel like dealing with it. I actually like that she wears her hair like that sometimes... It lets other women know that it's okay to be just 'regular' when you are hanging out with your family and having fun. I don't find she pulls it back that much when she's on some sort of official business, but if she does... so what. As long as she looks neat, which she always does. Now given, I love when her hair is out, wavy and shiny, but it's not always practical, even for a First lady!!
Blessing all..

Hi All,
I saw Mrs.O in New Orleans today! This was my 2nd time seeing her in person, and I am still so excited about it! I always like to emphasize how gorgeous and thinner she is in person. Her hair was probably pulled back because the weather was icky here today. It has rained nonstop for the last several days. Now, I know people are like "she has someone to do her hair, it's not like she was in the rain, etc." My Aunt, who has not left her house since Friday because of rain was in a tizzy about it too. Well, they actually walked around in a NOLA neighborhood on a rainy, warm, muggy day... not too many people's hair can withstand that. Anyway, I'm still so emotional ( 5 years later) and overjoyed to have spent some of this day with the President and 1st Lady. Very beautiful and warm people... May God bless them and us!

Why is it people like CLB and others sound so reasonable, insightful, and knowledgeable in their comments and observations, whereas others llike Nic John, Nonpasserat and their ilk always appear to have some hidden agenda? It seems as if these haters take pride in their ignorance, but know this people, most of us on this site are on to your games so you're not fooling anyone but your ignorant selves. Thank you CLB and other enlightened ones for your constant efforts to uplift this site with your welcomed and instructive comments.

Can you just hear Mrs O saying "see Bo missed you so much when you were away at camp he left you a little gift". http://tinyurl.com/2dvkntw By the way, lovely travelling outfits for all the Obamas. Am I the only one who thinks the president looks younger since his vacation?

about FLOTUS' hair.

1. FLOTUS is Black.
2. It is NEW ORLEANS.
3. It is NEW ORLEANS IN LATE AUGUST.
4. I don't care how good Johnny is with the Flat Iron of God, THAT is the best that FLOTUS can do with her right now.

@Anagrom,

I agree with you on that the President looks younger after his vacation. That's what having 10 days off from the office will do for you. It does for the rest of us, so it's even more pronounced for the President with all the responsibilities of the Office and the various crises he has to manage even while on vacation. Saw him this evening on an interview with Bryan Williams and he looked refreshed and ready to tackle all the vexing problems he temporarily left behind 10 days ago. Also, talk about a growth spurt, Malia has certainly grown up over the Summer, she's almost as tall as Mom!

Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 10:38 PM | Unregistered Commentermszonian524

I guess I missed this dress when Mrs. Obama wore it in Florida. It looks great on her and she is so lucky to be able to wear her hair back and still look stunning. I especially liked her hair when she went to New Life ? restaurant on the Vineyard and she wore the black and white dress with the large white earrings. I can certainly understand why she wears her hair back on the Vineyard and in Florida. The
humidity can be horrid both places. She has chosen a style that looks neat and beats the frizzy hair that humidity can bring. Believe me striking the right balance is not easy when you have curly hair.
She is doing what she feels comfortable with and that's what matters.

Any word on the designer of Mrs. O's dress? I was curious last time she wore it and I don't think we ever found out.

Black & white outfit - OMG, ladies, she was TRAVELING. Give her a break. Why don't you focus on how lovingly Sasha is hugging her instead?

I liked the dress she changed into then and I like it now. Perfect for a warm, muggy climate.

Side note: Lime green tote: The Lambertson-Truex duo have a new line out for Tiffany's. The reversible tote is precious. I will bet the FLOTUS will be carrying one soon.

Monday, August 30, 2010 at 8:36 AM | Unregistered CommenterKathyK

Mrs. Obama looks comfortable and classy in her black and white ensem! I especially like Mrs. Obama's jewelry! Whether its a colorful, eye-popping iridescent band on a watch, alone on her slender wrist...to the fun multi-mixed or multi-precious metal grouped bangles...I'm an ardent fan! Blame it on my college years and some old movies, especially the Latin flavored ones with Carmen Miranda in them, who always wore multi-stacked bangles! This look...is attractive and CHIC, nonetheless!

Monday, August 30, 2010 at 8:43 AM | Unregistered CommenterMs. M

@Miss Baker...Thank you! Malia is definitely carrying her mother's bag...so sweet! Malia's bag is on her right shoulder! I usually use the zoom feature, but didn't even need it for that visual!

@nonpasserat. Can you not see that the WIND is BLOWING! Gosh, Almighty knows...as my mother would say! At least let it be legit! hehehe

@McKinnley, Mia Monte, MsZonian524 (ilk is icky-just couldn't resist that), and others! Thank you! I only use the zoom feature on the computer to see what the fuss is all about! As usual, it's much ADO about absolutely NOTHING!

@Doc Sue. Thank you for sharing your close-up experience with us!!

By the way, I like hair too, especially when it's styled differently for comfort and ease during certain obvious weather conditions. I've never been a fan of the ozone layer destroying, eyes watering, nose sneezing, throat tickling and coughing, sprayed to a glacier stiffness hairspray...where not even the wind from a typhoon at its max could move! No offence to all the hairspray lovers out there! But, even Dear Abby doesn't wear her hair the same way she and her sister, Ann Landers used to many years ago!

i think Malia was just holding the bag for her mom, she's caring two bags.

Monday, August 30, 2010 at 10:34 AM | Unregistered Commenterjean

I admire the fact that Michelle is a high profile woman but still lives her life as she once did only a few years ago. There is nothing wrong in tying one's hair in a bun or going make up free on holiday. I actually look forward to combing my hair back and walking around fresh faced on holiday. What a welcome relief from coiffing and preening every day for work.

I love the Obama's, Michelle is a huge role model in many ways; in how she lives her life as a first lady and also as a young woman, wife and mother. I have loved and admired the freshness of her holiday wardrobe. The classic black and white always works, is this the same skirt that she wore to the theatre in NY earlier this year ? Malia and Sasha look happy, loved and GROWN UP. Phew, Malia is almost as tall as her dad.

I love our fashionable First Family! I love this site because there are so many positive comments about the Obamas, unlike most news/political sites where the ignorant seem to congregate to spew hate. It isn't that I don't want to hear opinions different than my own (I'm married to a Republican for goodness sakes), I'm just dog-tired of stepping over the odious garbage that hides beneath the banner of opinion.

I'd love to have my body as in shape and awesome as Mrs. O's. (I'm working on it!) For many reasons, she is an inspiration to many of us. Her emphasis on nutrition, health and fitness is just one of them. Anyone with decent vision can see that she walks her talk.

Re: the floral dress -- when Mrs. O first wore the dress last year, I suspected it was a Tracy Feith design, based on the bright print and seeming island influence. But, it's always been difficult to confirm his work as he doesn't have a full PR operation. When I began digging, I wasn't having luck with any of the previous contacts I had used before. I reached out to editors at fashionista.com, who believe he may be out of business, or at least taking a leave of absence. Quite sad if that's the case! The Tracy Feith dress that Mrs. O wore for the last event of the inauguration (featuring cranes in wisteria) is one of my all time favorites. Here is the story fashionista.com ran:
http://fashionista.com/2010/04/the-mysterious-disappearance-of-tracy-feith/

Monday, August 30, 2010 at 1:04 PM | Registered CommenterMrs. T

Mrs. T, I love the Tracy Feith dress from the inaguration too, she also wore it at an event in NYC. I can see why people think this dress may be his also. Please keep trying to solve the mystery, it is such an unusal dress there must be some designer with something like it out there!

Monday, August 30, 2010 at 2:12 PM | Unregistered CommenterAntigones Room

Are we going to have to go through this, "why is she wearing her hair in a bun so much?" everytime for the next 6 yrs? As we all see, she usually wears her hair up during her down time or when she's on vacation (just think about the beach, pool, and rain. And really who is going to flat iron their hair everytime they get out the pool knowing they will probably get back in soon, please NOT me and that's even if I get in in the first place because I don't even want to have to deal with my hair.) And last year after wearing it up alot, when she finally wore it down she had her chic new haircut. So, all I'm saying is give her a break, you never know what surprise she may have in store.

Also, I would just like to say I cannot stand the nice- nastiness that's going on. If you're going to be nice, be nice and if you're going to be nasty, be nasty, but the sugarcoating is definitely lame.

Now, the whole First Family looks great and well rested and you can tell from the pics that Malia is happy to be back with her family. Also, Sasha's black and white outfit when they landed home was the cutest and she looked like a mini Mrs. O.

Monday, August 30, 2010 at 2:26 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

Tough crowd on here today.

I think the print dress is super cute, but I don't care for the green shoes with it. I don't have black hair, but even the hair I do have could not withstand that weather. I see no problem with wearing it up and back. She is a lady and does what she has to to make it work. The girls look adorable, as usual:)

Have a great day, everyone!

Also, congratulations, Doc Sue! I'll never forget when I got to meet her (and I got two hugs from her, incidentally). The first thing I commented on was how exquisitely beautiful she is in person. And I think it's because her inner beauty just radiates out from her. I don't know....
Anyway, I'm very happy for you:)

Monday, August 30, 2010 at 3:20 PM | Registered CommenterLisa H

Let's not take the note about her hips being made 'enormous' by the flared out skirt.

I love Michelle Obama - I love her confidence, I love her smile, I love her walk, I love her confidence (again, in many ways!).. takes a fabulous woman to be in her shoes.

That said, I would like to add on that a skirt that flares out on her does no good to her figure.. I have no hips ('boyish').. she has beautiful, womanly hips.. I beg for skirts that flare out so they accentuate my waist..

I think Mrs. Obama looks best with sheath type dresses and pencil skirts that totally accentuate her figure. I don't like dresses or skirts that flare out on her figure type.
I'd die for her figure!! The hourglass shape and her ample back!

As another poster who saw her in person mentions, she is 'much slimmer in person' -- that I think means to say, some photos of her and some outfits of her's make her seem less slimmer than she actually is! Amazing what clothes can do to a person!!

While I like the patterned dress, the black and white skirt and top do not flatter. I like the gold bangles with the dress. Mrs. O's hair looks fine. It's August and hot. It is a real do.

Confident women can wear their hair pulled back as Mrs. Obama does! She is on vacation but even if she wasn't, the look is fine on her. I agree that the black skirt adds too much fabric to her hip area so it is not very flattering. The dress she wears coming off the plane is much nicer.

Monday, August 30, 2010 at 10:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterGail

Lovely news! Mr. President has redesigned the Oval Office in a style that suits him well:earthy and masculine. I am pretty sure the concept was all his, as Mrs. O favors a mix of traditional and modern-avant garde in her surroundings. There is not a Glenn Ligon piece in sight! I am particularly impressed with the rug with a border displaying quotes from several presidents and MLK.

P.S., Before the crazies arrive to slander, let me buffer that taxpayers DID NOT pay for this.

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 1:17 PM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

I just saw some close-ups of the beautiful black skirt on Huffington and on Getty. That skirt has some really nice detailing, it loks like it might be in two layers. Either way it is gorgeous! I like how our Michelle kept with simplicity on the top and let the skirt be the focal point. This is really nice and a great traveling outfit. That dress that she wore in New Orleans is still one of the "mysteries of Michelle's wardrobe" to us FLOTUS fans. Still, she looks just as fresh in it now as she did last year.

I hope the First Family had an enjoyable vacation. If it renewed their spirits and gave them quality time together as a family, then I think that it can be labeled as a success. Keeping that family intact is something that both President Obama and Michelle have made clear that it is a priority. Good for them!
