Blue Bouquet

Image by Mandel Ngan / Getty Images

The first lady returned home to the White House after attending a recital yesterday, wearing a blue floral Moschino dress and pewter flats.

We first spotted the dress in May 2009, here, but it's lovely to see it again in full view. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

I love her bag. Can anyone tell me who it's by? It reminds me of the black bag she carried in NY city on her spring break trip. I love the rectangular, boxy shape of this satchel and the black leather one too! I want to know where she got them both!

Oh, that's a great dress. Makes me want to go give a blue floral dress I have some love! Maybe tomorrow.

I just have to say, I love that you collect all of the first lady's fabulous in one place.

Loved it she looks like such a mom hot mom at that, I hope the recital went well.

Looking great

She looks summery and pretty, like a bouquet of blue hydrangeas. The only thing I think I would have done differently is wear some open toed summery sandals - flat ones or ones with a little heel. But it was only a recital. She looks comfortable and cool. I hear there is quite a heat wave in DC. Bet all the women in DC wish they had the guts (and the arms) to go sleeveless like the FLOTUS!

This dress is casual and fun. How can anyone have a bad day in such a lively look?!

Another dress of Mrs. O I could wear well.

Pretty....refreshing!

When I saw this dress last year I thought it was lilac with blue in it. I guess it looked different depending on the source of the pic and the lighting. This is a pretty summertime dress. I like how she kept it minimal with the accessories. However, I would not mind if she threw in the pearls for good measure. Oh, I guess we're never satisfied! She looks really nice.
@ BMB the black bag from New York trip that she's carried before is by Lambertson Truex. I saw that bag on ebay about two months ago. I'll scour ebay again and see if I can find it (if not sold already). There is a white one with yellow piping that is very similar. That item # : 360280313166 $199.95 but it ended on the 18th. You'll have to wait for the seller to relist it or contact the seller, and the seller has a 99.3% rating which is very good. Ebay has a store that has been selling bits and pieces of Lambertson Truex lately. Perhaps they bought out items when the brand was being bought out by Tiffany & Co a couple of years ago. Bergdorf and Saks no longer carry this brand on line. HAPPY SHOPPING!!

@ bmb - I too love this bag, I've been looking for a decent white leather bag for summer but they are so out of my price range. My cheap and cheerful white Longchamp is looking so grubby but I would love to invest in a bag similair to Mrs O.

@ canyongal - I thought the same thing when I saw this picture, open toe sandals would have looked really nice.

Altogether I love the look. She looks simply sensational.

she just keeps getting better and better. Her hair is so elegant and I loved Tim Gunn's facebook message about her. What a thrill it would be to meet her!

@Charlene in Detroit thanks so much for the info on the black bag!! I love that bag. I will be checking eBay on a routine basis!!

What a lovely, lovely dress. The white leather bag accentuates it so well. And yes ladies, I vote for white sandals as well. Oh heck, there is nothing wrong with her flats and I am loving the no jewelry too. Mrs. O. is just keeping it cool, pretty and simple.

Wonderful look for the summer

Sorry, but the Kid is not really digging this look. The print is just too.........much, even with the beautiful neckline.

I love the 1st Lady and her sense of style, but the white horzontal banding of flowers across where she is the widest is a fashion don't.

Casual elegance. Lovely summer look.

Monday, July 26, 2010 at 12:26 PM | Unregistered Commenterfoo

The FL looks beautiful as usual.
@ Lisa H - "is a fashion don't." - A look is only that when it detracts. MO has beautiful, wide, real womanly hips. She shows off her real curves. She is NOT a size 2....Thank the Heavens!!
Jump out of the box......please.

I love the 1st Lady, her sense of style, and her real woman curves, but the white horzontal banding of flowers across where she is the widest detracts, in my opinion.

This is a beautiful, fresh look in wonderful vivid blues. I'm so happy to see the dress in full. And with pewter flats... how refreshing!?

I was reduced to yawning by the catty remark about a band of white at Mrs O's widest point. It's not at her widest point. The widest point on an A-line dress is the HEM.

To clarify the facts in minute and tedious detail, the darkest colour is at the narrowest point on Mrs O, her high waist. To accentuate the narrowest point there is a pale diagonal line of print at thigh level on one side and hip level on the other. Diagonal bands of colour always employed by smart designers as being most flattering to all shapes and sizes. The whole point of that line is to make the waist tiny by extreme contrast to the darkest blue. Below the pale line of print there are varying bands of colour down to the widest point, the hem, which all conspire to make the waist look small and the skirt wide. That is the POINT.

I mean, does one really need to explain this simple, simple stuff?

@Posh tater - are you a seamstress? I love how you break down the construction of a dress as I fully understand what you are saying....
Love the way you made your point!!! :)

Very, very pretty and feminine. I agree with the open-toed sandal comment...those would have looked great with this gorgeous, flowery dress.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 4:29 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

*Sigh*

Yes, Posh, you do have to explain the simple things!

I loved this dress on first appearance, and still love it! The pairing with the silver flats is genius.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 7:58 AM | Registered CommenterBevi

Posh and those who champion her/him: I do not feel my remark was catty, and I am entitled to my opinion, as are you. I was referring to the widest part of Mrs. Obama, not the dress. Just because you don't agree with my opinion, doesn't mean yours is right and mine is wrong. Please don't flatter yourself by feeling the need to explain things to me. I did not launch a personal attack on anyone in this post, so I do not appreciate yours. I didn't think that's what this blog was about. I enjoy getting on this page every day. It is possible to express one's opinion without attacking others. Thank you.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 9:47 AM | Registered CommenterLisa H

I really can't see that this dress emphasizes her hips !? Anyway, I think her widest part are her athletic shoulders.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 10:28 AM | Registered Commenter

Wow, you feel attacked because Posh explained how a dress is made and others co-signed it? Things that make you go Hmmmmm? If you have no need for the info, cool. However, some of us did learn something ;-)

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 12:53 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

I do appreciate your comments on dress construction, Posh. As a long time poster on this site I can refer to several occasions when you have contributed insights based on your knowledge as a seamstress. I remember you weighing in significantly about corsets, which you have made in the past.

Thanks for the info!

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 2:45 PM | Registered CommenterBevi

I view this website everyday! I enjoy the pictures and reading the comments. I learn something new everyday and appreciate every tidbit of information! Thank you Posh for the information.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 3:46 PM | Registered CommenterParis Summers

This is the last I'll say on it, because it's obvious to me that I'm in the minority. Nylon, I did not say I felt attacked because Posh explained how a dress was made. I felt I was attacked by the comments, "I was reduced to yawning by the catty remark..." and "To clarify the facts in minute and tedious detail..." I actually don't need to have pattern construction explained to me(but I am glad that some of you have benefited from that explaination), and I think it is rude to assume that my opinion is ill informed as is obvious to me by the subsequent posts. I have no wish to fight with what is clearly a clique on this page. I apologize if I've offended anyone's sensibilities. Again, I enjoy getting on this page, and I'd like to be able to make an innocent remark from time to time. Peace and Love.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 3:54 PM | Registered CommenterLisa H

just for clarification - lisa h - you dont need to feel offended. theres some strong feelings on this blog regarding flotus which sometimes seems a bit ridiculous as she is only human...from my angle there are no cliques...just people who appreciate those that have a way with words when expressing themselves...just imagine us all being a room having a conversation...i think this back and forth would have played out fine (with no hard feelings!)

What a lovely, fresh, summery look!

I just have a thought on the ballet flats versus strappy sandals discussion. I agree that sandals look good with dresses but only if they have higher heels. If you want to wear flat-soled shoes, as Mrs. O often does, flat sandals are not always very flattering with certain styles of dresses. I know this from personal experience. I am the same height as Mrs. O and also prefer flat shoes most of the time, and I've found that ballet flats work better with this style than sandals do.

I'd never presume to speak for her, but this is my experience.
