Tres Chic in Prabal Gurung

The first lady is wearing a hand-draped, off the shoulder, red matte jersey gown by Prabal Gurung at the White House Correspondents' Dinner this evening. Stunning!

Update: On the jewelry front, it appears that the first lady wore pieces by Bochic and Sutra Jewels. The bottom gold cuff is a Sutra Jewels piece, created from 10 carats of raspberry tourmaline, flanked by rose cut diamonds in a star-burst motif. The top cuff appears to be a Bochic piece, constructed from white bakelite, gold filigree and rose-cut diamonds, seen here.

Darn it! I was going to guess Monique Pean or Bochic for the earrings but I went to log in and now I see Mrs T updated to confirm they Are Bochic, so I win no bonus points for the guess lol.

What can I say, she looks amazing!!

She's work form fitting dresses all the time, and yet I can't figure out why this one so expertly emphasizes her shape moreso than other dresses. Is it the solid color?

I can't remember having a first lady this chic or this interesting. I doubt that even Jackie Kennedy had anything on Mrs. O! Simply amazing!

Hot! Didn't you hear the Journalist who won the award was just gushing over Flotus? He keep on saying you're so beautiful, so beautiful.

Gorgeous. Pure class and beauty all the way!

She looks like she's lost a big of weight. You can really see how slim she looks on Ed Henry's twitter pics:

Michelle looks amazing. Color enhancing her.

I watched the dinner -- pretty funny. Mrs. O looked gorgeous in her red dress. I'll have to check out the full-length photos now. Oh, and I loved her bangles. I've started wearing bangles again and I've bought a couple of cuffs too. I ordered a beautiful lucite cuff with a peacock feather encased from Tory Burch. I couldn't get my hand through. One has to be a tiny woman for that cuff to fit. I was hugely disappointed when I shipped it back! :( Anyway, I thought FLOTUS hit a home run tonight! Last thing: her hair was beautifully coiffed as well -- the bob had a lot of bounce and swing!

She killed that dress. I don't know a more elegant way to say it. I'm sorry! The horizontal pleating/gathering and those Juliet sleeves (that's what I've always called them) combined with the color and her amazing makeup and hair might be my favorite look on her in a long time.

Mrs.O looks wonderful!!!!!!!

Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 11:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterLW

I can't tell you how gratifying it was to ID the earrings as Bochic on the previous thread! I always always always guess either completely wrong or late. Have we identified the bangles yet? I am still thinking Aexis Bittar, at least for the one nearest her hand.

The dress looks like it has a little train action going, doesn't it?

Simply stunning! I love the dress and the whole look.

Quite delightful. Bracelets very pretty on her beautiful arms. Colour is regal and lights up the room.

Love when POTUS said he was very happy his wife came to the dinner, normally she doesn't go to these things. Sweet. Enjoyed the humour from previous Presidents on Larry King.

I just checked the Prabal Garang website and it shows the dress from the back, in white. There is a train on that one. The way this dress falls and drapes makes me think the fabric is quite weighty. I'm guessing silk jersey??? It's really gorgeous. There's nothing like the perfect red dress.

@lorns. Nope! Here's another 'night owl' that's up as well! (SMILE)!

Mrs. Obama looks richly exotic in her riveting red dress! The accessories mix, raves with excitement and reveals a daring exploration of tones and texture. The style, the fabric's softness, gentle ruching in the bodice, and the bright. bold color all work together like a fine artist painting. Mrs. Obama is unique in her elegant mode!

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 12:58 AM | Unregistered CommenterMs. M

Tracy, many people who have met Mrs.O always comment on how she is much smaller in and much taller in person. As she told one white house's visitor, TV and Pictures , depending on the angles can make you bigger than you actually are.

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 1:21 AM | Registered Commenterchrystelle

Michelle Obama is the epitome of stunning, modern elegance. A woman comfortable in her own skin, she is nobody's fool and certainly no caricature.
As usual, she and our smart President brought such class, good-natured fun, unassuming and unaffected style, and much dignity to this event.

Stunning, absolutely stunning.

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 2:15 AM | Unregistered CommenterSPQR1052

She looks amazing. She most likely had this dress customized by the designer for her (thus no train in the back). Ladies, her stunning figure could be from something as simple as excellent shapewear. It does wonders.

Would you call this color "tomato red"? It's just hot, any way you slice it! I LOVE the earrings!

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 2:22 AM | Unregistered Commentercanyongal

Mrs. O looked absolutely stunning tonight - utterly gorgeous. However, is it just me or did Mrs. O look a little subdued and/or distracted tonight?

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 2:32 AM | Unregistered Commenterkermit

I don't know how anybody could call this women unattractive or ugly (not referring to anyone on this site). She is so very very beautiful inside and out.

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 6:23 AM | Unregistered CommenterNona

Michelle looks beautiful. The color, fit and jewelry all 10.

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 8:41 AM | Unregistered Commenterlisa

I thought the dress was knee length, I had no idea until I looked at the links that chrystelle posted. The dress is simply divine and the train makes her look like the belle of the ball tonight. The colour suits Mrs Obama perfectly and the ruching really sets it off nicely.

I'm definitely feeling the smoky eye makeup as well. The last time I tried something similar, I ended up with two black eyes !! I'd love to know what Mrs Biden wore because I can't find pictures of her online. I thought Ashley Judd looked a picture of elegance tonight.

BTW, Michelle I'm envious of the fact that you got a chance to attend. What an experience.

Mrs. T, Here's another dress if you haven't yet covered it. It's Michelle meeting w/ the Olympians in an orange dress. I'll include Dr. Biden's dress too which i loved, very patriotic in a classic way, and matching ties w/ the VP. Michelle's shoes matched with President's tie too.

Dazzling! I almost wish she'd saved this one for the upcoming State Dinner as this will be hard to top.

Does anyone know about the cuffs?

This is beyond grogeous!!!!! She looks great, incredible.

@ a MI Mom while I think this dress is spectacular, I think her State Dinner dresses are even more spectacular, like the one she wore for the State Dinner for India.

Wow......This dress is a killer on our beautiful First Lady. I think the shoes are the ones from the Inaugration. I'm taking a wild guess here.

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 1:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterMarilyne

Every time the first lady, Michelle Obama, appears before the camera, her face changes and her skin getting lighter. What else must be done for her to look better? I always go back to her picture during the campaign and first day in the White House to see her real her. Why do you have to changes your features Mrs. Obama?

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 1:50 PM | Unregistered Commenterelizabeth a. santos

This look is one for the books indeed. Love the makeup, love the earrings. The cuffs are beyond belief. Not too many of us would be able to carry them off like Michelle does. I would call this look in its entirety--queenly--though a queen I would very much like to get to know.

On the clothing front, I agree entirely with canyongal. Shapewear makes it or breaks it when wearing clothing cut so close to the body--even a very fit, very tall body. In this case, the shapewear is perfect. Perfect, too, is the fitting of the red dress to Michelle's actual body, rather than to the idea of what her body looks like (still granting how excellent shapewear is necessary nonetheless). I can imagine people stitching on this till moments before she took the stage!

The lavender USA Weekend dress, on the other hand, and while pretty in its own way, appears, to me, deflated on top. The seaming, though creative, is there for a reason, but that reason is not how it truly fits Michelle's own top. A bit of well chosen shapewear could easily have enhanced this particular look. (I have finally come to the realization, also, that I'm not particularly fond of a bunch of material at the waistline, whether it be called the actual gathers or box pleats of yore, or the flutings of the present. I just don't like that look no matter who's wearing it. Ah well. That's my deal.)

For the Saturday's red dress, though, WOW! I would have liked a short version, too. In fact, I was surprised when I got to a photo that showed it was floor length! Here I was all in love with it knee length, or even shorter.

Happy Spring, all.

I am proud again to see another FEATHER on Prabal Gurung's Cap! He has done all the Nepalis proud!! Go Prabal! Keep it up! Mrs. To say that Mrs. O looks ravishing would be an understatement. I didn't like the two cuffs with it...maybe one would've been enough or maybe thinner bangles would've looked better. but overall she gets 9 out of 10 which is still awesome!!

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 2:45 PM | Unregistered CommenterRashmi

thanks much for the "daylife" photo link, chrystelle, but I feel like a dim-bulb -- can't see shoes in any of the pics? But there are a couple of great shots indicating that the full train is definitely there, looks like it must be a real knock-out in motion!

as for the color, oy! looks too light for "tomato" to me (maybe my monitor), I thought more "brilliant salmon", it seems too pink for "tomato" to me; but the husband says it's too orange! (for tomato). On the other hand, I googled "tomato red" and the lighter one comes up a match, even to my (wonky?) eye! http://dnkenterprises.com/PashminaColors/TomatoRed.jpg

Fabulous! Great fit, great color, great jewelry.

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 3:06 PM | Unregistered Commenterkatel

Anyone know if she purchases the jewelry or if it's on loan to her?

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 3:19 PM | Registered CommenterSootica

I'm also wondering how she's wearing a $17K bracelet!! Is it on loan? I will say the dress is truly amazing on her. The whole outfit is fantastic. I might have stopped with just one bracelet if I'd been styling her b/c I think the two together detract from HER just a tiny bit. But that is a very small criticism!

Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 3:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterKetura

If the jewelry is on loan to her, then she is doing a great job showcasing the artists and the unique products. Great to see more artists/businesses getting exposure with Mrs. O, at every price point. I am still mourning the donation of her Inaugural bangles (!) but Mrs. O has certainly moved on. Anyway, I just love to see all of the fashion and accessories, not having the money, figure, or occasion to wear a lot of this (but I'm certainly getting inspiration).
