Lovely in L'Wren Scott

There's a new designer in the mix! To address the Grocery Manufacturuers Association Science Forum today, Mrs. O wore a pink and white striped silk sleeveless bow shirt and raspberry pink laquered high-waisted pencil skirt, both by L'Wren Scott. The pieces hail from L'Wren Scott's Spring 2010 collection, and can be seen here. What a delight to discover the unexpected inset of pink silk as the first lady left the stage!
Mrs. O's daring style was matched by the strength of her message today, as she called for a step change in the food industry: “We need you not just to tweak around the edges, but to entirely rethink the products that you’re offering, the information that you provide about these products, and how you market those products to our children." In fewer words, Mrs. O said the food industry has a duty to "step it up.”

@germaine,
You said "tight outfits detract from the importance of the subject of the speech on
obesity for which she is delivering." This is ridiculous, so what are you saying? So every
person with big busts, large legs, or any natural areas of the body that is different will not
get their message accross.
Well if the whole world believed that, we would not have made so many advances in science,
technology and constant growth and changes to make the world a better place.
It would be better to focus on this great cause and appreciate the good that will come from
changes in eating habits.
How refreshing! Mrs. O definately looks hot in this number.
I agree with Joanne; the outfit is just one size too small. I also agree with someone earlier who said the high necklines are not so flattering on Mrs. Obama. What is all this "hater" talk? I would say that THAT is "not appropriate"!
This is a great look! L'Wren Scott knows how to work women's bodies.
I am not feeling the comments that high necklines don't work on Mrs. O. This outfit looks delicious neck to toe.
In my opinion, the skirt is a bit too tight. I don't love the inset at the back of the skirt, but overall, the outfit could have been great---if not so tight.
A size larger and a good look in a three way mirror would benefit FLOTUS...and it's not hate mail to criticize her taste/choices from time to time...
I love the outfit and see nothing inappropriate about it, and I definitely don't think that the outfit distracts from the message -- unless one chooses to only focus on the outfit. In fact, I don't recall hearing anyone in the press talk about the outfit. Given that this is a fashion blog it is expected that opinions about the outfit will be discussed and debated here, but to say the outfit took away from the message is inaccurate and unfair.
Love the outfit. Different look for her with covering the neck. Not sure if it's the most flattering. Also, with such a fitted skirt, an extra ironing and attention to how the shirt was tucked in would have made the back side more flattering.
* adopts drab, world-weary voice * Oh no. Mrs Obama has a beautiful body and had the temerity to dress it like she was a confident individual with style. Oh horror. Oh travesty. The end of the world. Is nigh.

OK, back to my tone of voice. First off, let me just say that I really dislike the outfit. I hate the bow, I hate the nasty inverted pleat detail and I hate the raspberry pinstripe. It's all ghastly. The pleat in particular is very "My First Sewing Lesson".
NOW let me say how glorious Mrs O looks IN that outfit. It fits her perfectly, it is not too small. You can see on the shoulders and waist that it fits perfectly. It complements her physique - slim upper body, generous hips, looooong legs. It's modest and entirely appropriate for this event. Long skirt, high necked. If you want to be scandalised by this outfit what you are really asking for is for Mrs O to wear a burqua. This outfit is fresh and on trend while being (wait for it) professional AND sexy.
Newsflash: We. Can. Do. Both. It is 2010, not 1810.
She has a butt. Get over it people, we all have a butt. Mine doesn't look that good any more, but if it did, I would surely wear things that made it look that good again. I remember way back in the day when a (female) manager in an office where I worked asked my (male) boss if he thought it appropriate for me to wear a certain skirt to the office, if it wasn't too sexy. He answered that he was more concerned with how well I did my job. I would suggest that some of you peeps take a Valium and do the same.
LMAO @ Posh!!!
This is one my favorites EVER. Love everything about it.
@ Posh Tater. First of all, I could literally ROFLOL at your response! So FUNNY!!! Newsflash...LOL!
Personally, I've seen women who's outfits were professional and sexy, without being distracting or alluring in the corporate atmosphere.
Mrs. Obama wears her confidence and her outfits WELL! Time for more exercise! LOL!
Well quite. I can't help but wonder whether, if some of our more Victorian posters spent a leetle more time doing sit-ups and squats, they would be less hysterical about well fitting clothes that showed .... gasp .... an ANKLE.
Where can we purchase items from the spring 2010 collection. I LOVE THIS SKIRT!!! She looks FAB!!
I saw this look on other sites and never saw the back of the skirt. AMAZING!!! I love that FLOTUS isn't afraid of putting a new twist on really conservative, business pieces. She's a total inspiration to me personally and fashion wise to step outside of my box. I was looking at some of the other L'Wren Scott looks at it sort of has a 40's-ish vibe to them. Really classic pieces. Nice!!!
I think she looks great, the dress just was not appropriate for a serious presentation. (Maybe if she added a blazer or a cardigan).
That's a dinner date look.
Skirt is right on. Blouse is 1983 and doesn't do her justice. Sorry.
