Lovely in L'Wren Scott

Images by J. Scott Applewhite / AP Images
There's a new designer in the mix! To address the Grocery Manufacturuers Association Science Forum today, Mrs. O wore a pink and white striped silk sleeveless bow shirt and raspberry pink laquered high-waisted pencil skirt, both by L'Wren Scott. The pieces hail from L'Wren Scott's Spring 2010 collection, and can be seen here. What a delight to discover the unexpected inset of pink silk as the first lady left the stage!
Mrs. O's daring style was matched by the strength of her message today, as she called for a step change in the food industry: “We need you not just to tweak around the edges, but to entirely rethink the products that you’re offering, the information that you provide about these products, and how you market those products to our children." In fewer words, Mrs. O said the food industry has a duty to "step it up.”

i see that the first lady sexiness has brought out the "approriate police".
it 2010.not 1855.
I love this outfit. The colour and the fit really compliment Michelle. She has an amazing figure - toned arms and derriere and just look at that nippy waist. I need to get down the gym !!
I am astonished at some of the comments. It is evident that there are a lot of haters on this site. We are fortunate enough to live in a society where women (even high profile women) can wear lovely clothes that celebrate our figures and bodies. Be grateful that you aren't in countries where burqas and niqabs are the only fashion option.
Mrs. O's hair has never looked better, but I agree with Urban Girl and several others that the skirt is too tight. No skirt should wrinkle and grab like that when a woman is standing up. I fail to understand why anyone thinks it is appropriate for a First Lady to wear a skirt that is so tight that the focus becomes her rear end instead of her message.
I agree. I think a Vneck would work much bettrer.
OH MY GOD!!!! What a FANTASTIC outfit on a FANTASTIC body!!! What a great role model for us all! A woman who is bright, beautiful and exudes feminine sexuality and appeal in a completely appropriate and admirable way. A new model of feminism I think.
Love her!!!
She is absolutely a great representation of America. Love her! That pink is hott!
I love the outfit and Mrs. O looks great. I've lost some weight but I'm not ready for a pencil skirt yet.....
"Sexiness"? In 2010 everything may be allowed, but not everything is appropriate. I would prefer to hear what comes out of her mouth than view her bootyliciousness. I love and look great in my pajamas, but that doesn't mean it's beneficial to wear to a job interview or anywhere else just because it's "2010, not 1855."
Every FLOTUS to represent the entire country, and I do expect more from her. She usually delivers, but this is a "don't".
MRS O YOU DO THE UNITED STATED PROUD. THE FLOTUS IS A SMART WOOMEN WHO KNOWS WHO SHE IS, SHE STAND BY HER POTUS THE FLOTUS IS A WIFE, MOTHER AND DAUGHTER AND A ROLE MODEL TO ALL WOMEN YOUNG AND OLD. I AM SO GLAD SHE IS SHOWING THE WORLD THAT WOMEN HAVE BODIES AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE THIN TO LOOK HEALTHY.
46 AND LOOKING GREAT.WITH THE FLOTUS BY THE POTUS SIDE. THE USA IS LOOKING GOOD.
THE USA IS VERY LUCK TO HAVE THE FIRST FAMILY. PS NYLON ANY VIDEO YET.
I agree with Urban Girl. The fit of the skirt makes the outfit inappropriate for FLOTUS. Mrs Obama is a beautiful woman with a toned and curvy body and an important message she is trying to convey. She shouldn't allow a too tight skirt to distract from her message.
she looks awesome! love this look.
On a totally different "fashion" note .... watching the L'Wren Scott Spring 2010 youtube video I realized that a majority of the models were sporting the same hair style that Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the Oscars this year. That "mega" bun with the flyaways in front. The models hair look exactly the same, including the flyaways. Interesting!! SJP is always the height of fashion ... that hair wasn't a mistake. It was all intentional. Excellent!!!
Honestly, thank goodness that you ladies do not live in countries ruled by misogynistic dictators who do expect women to have breasts or bottoms or toned arms or display a piece of curve or flesh for fear of upsetting the status quo and instead have to cloak themselves in capes, gowns, masks and gloves.
Not appropriate ?? Not appropriate for who ?? She's a WOMAN !!!! Women have curves, they have breasts they have bottoms. There is not an ounce of cleavage or flesh hanging out. The skirt is decent length and all parts are covering her modesty.
If you are haters, then take your hate to the other websites where you can all spew venom and disgust and high five each other with your ignorant comments.
I am an AA female physician and a personal trainer so I know something about being smart, wicked toned and sexy. I also love the Obamas because we voted for them and even donated to the campaign. This outfit, however, I both dissapointing and inappropriate for any first lady on a day time official function - it is too tight .
@ Urban & Katel...
Well she is not wearing her pajamas and if you want to hear what she is saying then click on the clicks or go read the white house blogs. Your whole statement is pretentious. If the back of the skirt was not shown non of you would be posting your statements. There was no distractions, the only people that were distracted where you the complainers. They heard her statement and left.
The fact that you are in a fashion blog makes you focus on what she is wearing. Did anyone email you to tell you they were distracted, that is the most made up cover-up statement ever. Too tight? what was too tight because Mrs T decided to show the detail in the back of the skirt. I have high waisted skirts like that I wear to work so please save the melodrama. Stop being pretentious. There was no distracting of any message, its just you.
If the picture was not taking to show the detail in the back none of this ridiculous statements will be posted. She appears to be representing the US very well and based on the majority here she did not fail to meet anybodies expectation. She will dress as she sees fit and you can whine all you want.
I agree with Briana. Though I hate getting into fights on this site, again common sense must be noted.
As Briana said the picture was taken for the detail of the skirt not about the First Ladies bootie. Also it looks as though it was taken backstage.
All the other pictures are of Michelle standing facing front behind a podium.
And I really hate the word bootilicious (sp).
For the love of God, please calm down about the First Lady being sexy. It's 2010. Mrs. Eisenhower doesn't live here anymore. And I can't think of any time Mrs. O has dressed "not appropriately"...not one. Maybe her outfit might be a miss one day but she's never embarrassed herself or the role she has. I said she looked sexy because she does, in a potato sack or a pencil skirt. On a nearly Spring day she wore a sleeveless bow top and a high waisted pencil skirt while giving a speech about curbing obesity. Can you please tell me what she should have worn? A hoop skirt? Something from the Elizabeth Bennet collection circa 18something?
Ugh. It really irritates me when Mrs.O dresses in a mildly sexy outfit that shows off some of her fit body and curves and suddenly the "appropriate police" come out. I remember on a few occasions people have deemed everything from the color of her dress to the fabric used as "inappropriate". So ridiculous. If you don't like the outfit, fine, but last time I checked you were not the head of protocol at the White House, so please.
I think 20 or 30 years from now people will look back at photo's of her and see what a confident woman she was and how she was unlike any other First Lady we have had before. She caries herself with confidence in every sense of the word, whether it's her intelligence, personality or even, yes, her body. Not just because of what she wears but how she keeps herself fit and healthy.
In a way I think showing off some of her fit curves during this event about the food industry was a subliminal way of showing America what a fit, healthy American woman should and can look like with exercise and the healthy eating habits. She made a call for the food industry to "step it up" by providing healthier food options to the American people and she is definitely leading by example.
Uh Oh, somebody used the H word. Hater. They don't like it when you use that word and get very offended. ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
I also would like to ask is this not the way Mrs. O looks in all her sheath dresses? Do you not see her tiny waist, hips, and behind in those dresses? Take a sec and think about it ;-)
Fabulous look. I'm a skirt fanatic myself. Not sure where the inappropriate debate comes for pencil skirts, they're a standard in any professional woman's wardrobe.
Love the unexpected silk insert in the back. Very nice...
I think that Mrs. O should start wearing Scaasi or de la Renta suits that hide her derriere, arms, sexy legs or better yet a burka with netting that would also cover her sexy eyes then all we can gasp at are her Jimmy Choo shoes. Wait a minute she can't do that, she'll be modest but.......
Not a fan. Personally I would have liked it better without the little kick pleat in the back. Other than that, the back view is way more flattering than the front. She does look like a swimmer from the front, not that there is anything wrong with that but it isn't the most flattering cut for her.
Her eyebrows are dark and lovely again - Hallelujah! Makes such a huge difference!
Last week there were pregnancy rumors after FLOTUS wore that lilac Moschino suit with the trapeze jacket. "She must be hiding a baby bump" and "Secret Service cars will have a 'baby on board' sticker in the window" on and on it went. Well, I think this outfit puts that one to sleep. She looks MARVELOUS! Those rose tones really suit her well. That is some skirt and when I saw the details I knew it would be some flack about it.....oh well.
I had heard the name L'Wren Scott before but never really paid any attention to her designs. I took a look on Style.com at her shows. She is really an amazing designer with some beautiful clothes.I think her clothes will look exceptional on our Michelle, I know this one sure does. A+
Mrs. T....just a thought...could you please filter all the bickering that is going on that has nothing to do with fashion..... will stop visiting this site if this nonsense continues..thanks for listening!
Hmmmm..... I think after eight years of the very Modest Laura Bush some voters forgot about how flashy past First Ladies dressed. The people on here screaming "inappropriate" ...have their idea on how a First Lady should dress....While others like me see no big deal with most of what Mrs. Obama wear since she is a 21 century first lady....lol
People please look up what past First Ladies wore before "screaming inappropriate" about Michelle...I use to think that some of her outfits were out there too...However, during a quick review on google I looked up outfits of past first ladies and was shocked to see some of the over the top clothing these ladies wore....Believe me when I say First Lady Michelle Obama clothing choices is tamed when compared to her predecessors ...Just google Hillary Clinton & Nancy Regan outfits...you'll see...
I LOVE THE BACK OF MRS OBAMA SRIKT THATS HOTTTTTTTTTTT I DIDNT SEE THE BACK OF HER SRIKT NICE. HER SPEECH SHE DID WAS GOOD I WAS THERE.
Another lovely pic. I like the colours, trying to bring more spring into my wardrobe now the weather's good. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/17/michelle-obama-goes-green_n_502828.html
You know, I'm sympathetic to those who don't think it's "appropriate." This came up when she was wearing a lot of sleeveless outfits...whether it was "appropriate." And I wrote then that there are just some people who are inherently sexy. She's one of them. There's something about their build, their look, their essence that is alluring. You put this outfit on Sarah Jessica Parker, who is very pretty and in shape, but not shapely, and this looks like a "cute outfit." You put this on Mrs. O with her shapely arms, her small waist, and her bottom, and I'm sure it arouses that part of everyone's brain that thinks of sex. And when that happens, for some, it is an uncomfortable thing especially when it comes from a first lady. So I think I get it. But that's not Mrs. O's fault.
It's not her fault that she's got that quality and I don't think she should spend her life apologizing for it, or hiding herself. She can get away with wearing a lot of different styles, so I don't hate her for trying out something fit and sophisticated yesterday, which also happened to make her look sexy.
Wow is all I can say! :) FLOTUS is beauty personifed on ALL levels!!! She looks so confident and reassured, it brings tears of joy and pride to my eyes.
I researched Ms. L. Wren Scott as well, From what I read and observed is that she stands 6ft4 and is also quite regal. I believe FLOTUS was Ms. Scott's fashion plate prototype dream come true. Just maybe, Ms. Scott grabbed the opportunity to finally design for a beautiful, curvaecous. and statuesque woman who is also a public figure( no pun intended).
As for folks preaching on what's appropriate, please don't let your emotions, jealousies and shortcomings blind you from the truth; FLOTUS rocked this number HANDS DOWN!
KUDOS Ms. Scott for throwing caution to the wind, this outfit is the BOMB(IN A VERY GOOD WAY)!!!!!! Rock on FLOTUS :).
Mrs. O is HOT! HOT! HOT!...................
Dang IVA, it must feel good to make sense all the time!!!! LOL ;-)
BTW, there are new pics of Mrs. O today and she's back to her oldself. HAHAHAHAHAHA, Cardigan + Belt, Now What!!!!

PS NYLON ANY VIDEO YET? I KNOW YOU WILL FIND SOME.
WOW! Mrs. O!!!! I APPLAUD THE FRESHNESS SHE BRINGS! ISN'T SHE LOVELY! So UNSULLIED and apropos for her and the occassion! I L-O-O-V-E this high-waisted pencil skirt and the tie blouse which adds just the right touch of CHIC to this outfit! WALK-IT, FIRST LADY!!! This skirt is so versatile for walking...unbuttoned for longer strides or buttoned for short, dainty moves, just select which buttons to undo!
This is an outfit that calls for a visual CELEBRATION of ones femininity! I'm having a nouveau gaga moment here (completely infatuated with her fashionable style)! I enjoy seeing how physically-toned and fit she is in whatever she wears! She's got it, FLAUNT IT (no need or reason to hide it) and she does with grace and confidence! She's proud of the skin and body she's in and as our First Lady, I am proud of her, TOO!
@ Ari...thank you for posting the L'Wren Scott Spring 2010 collection...classy, simply classy! From the intro to the guests individual servers...the collection to the end, BEAUTIFUL! What a showing!
CMB, I have not found any video. I don't know whats up with that.

Check the above link out. This is bad bad fashion. I don't know what she is thinking. so ugly outfit. Everything looks awful together.
IVA i hear you but i am tired of the silliness from some individuals. It is not her fault that the back of her clothe was photographed to show the design.
Secondly I am tired women are not sticks, women of color have curves and that is why even when it comes to basic outfit as a jeans, there is a problem with their fit with our shapes. I don't see anything wrong, i own high waisted skirts and thats their design. The corporate world it is a staple.
I usually now just avoid commenting here but it just seems silly when folks say its distracting from the message. What message? Did someone email to say that? Was this site called follow the message of Mrs O? If they were so interested in the message click on the links?
It read as pretentious period. I got curves and I am not going to wear a paper bag because some individuals are insecure or can't stand the ability that some of us actually have SHAPES.
This is not about appropriate to me, that is all a cover up to belittle. Like I said they can whine all the want but finally its good to see a woman of color not hide her curves or shape because some folk think it is first lady like. She is not a stick so deal with it and eat your heart out, we have arms, curves and a backside and we ain't going to apologize for it.
@ Nic John Although I like the outfit you posted, you also know good and well that link has no relevance to this thread, please stay focused. Seems to me you are always waiting in the wings to spew negatvity, sup' with that?
Anyhoo, I will attempt to make a skirt quite similiar to this one very soon, I am soooooo inspired!! :).
Well said, Briana :).
I would have appreciated Mrs. Obama wearing in something more appropriate for the audience and setting. Tight outfits detract from the importance of the subject of the speech on obesity for which she was delivering.
Not sure why I am having so much trouble with my post. Won't bother trying to type it again. I love this. This is an A+ for Mrs. O. Wrote a long essay outlining everything I love about this. Lost it. Oh well.
Awww, Nyon, I appreciate that!
@ briana...I agree with what you said. I think there are many subconscious things going on with the "appropriateness" reactions Mrs. O gets whenever she wears clothes that show her assets off. For me, it is not Mrs. O's problem, it's that individual's problem ultimately. And honestly, if someone is so mentally weak that they can't focus on the words coming out of her mouth and can only focus on her body....well, that sounds like a personal problem too.
Iva,
I totally agree with you. Mrs. O knows how to enhance her figure strengths and to enhance her lesser physical gifts. She is a master of this and looks fabulous. All of us need to confirm that none of us (or most of us) have the bodies of the runway girls or girls in the ads. But we must claim or bodies, eat well, take care of our nutrition, work out and then dress in ways that enhance our stregnths and not make us feel bad about aspects of our figures that in the current culture fashion ad/runway make us feel less beautiful. She is a master of taking care of her self and knowing how to dress that showcases her best attributes. As I have said on this site she inspires me. As well as all of you ladies (and soM. O's approach!
I loved this outfit but think it was one size too small. It is just too tight in the back as evidenced by the wrinkling and it cups her backside instead of skimming it. Not a hater at all - just think too too tight.
PERFECTION!!! Mrs Obama rocked this very simple, classy, beautifully made outfit!! And even better, her heartfelt, insightful, well articulated and well recieved appeal to her audience: members of the food manufacturers association.
Great lady, great outfit, great presentation - What more could anyone ask for??!!!
@ Scott you wrote "Love the unexpected silk insert in the back. Very nice..."
me too but I think some folks thought she had forgotten to button her skirt and her slip was showing.....
@ scott ----I meant @ Tru
OK, the back of that outfit is for her husband! So cool and sexy.
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE!!! One of my all time favorites on her!
MICHELLE: You really get around! Do you work for the US gov't in some capacity?
Others: Just because someone thinks this skirt is too tight, shows VPL, and would have looked much cuter had Mrs. O. been able to close the top two buttons on the kick pleat does NOT make them a hater. You need to get over yourselves and stick to fashion.
@ Tia you are so right, I see the pictures of Hillary, Laura and others --- based on some of their outfits ain't nothing inappropriate about the first lady. Maybe if they had blogs dedicated to their outfits the appropriate and distracting patrol would have belittled them too. Funny how perceptions work like these first ladies held some modest standard, that is all silly based on the pictures i am seeing its all false. The reason they got away with these false premise is because the public never paid any attention and immediately characterized them as boring. When they were never boring. They had their own styles. I guess when you are the first you attract attention based on dubious standards or illusions of what first ladies are suppose to look like. The more you open history, the more you find out all these perceptions are not based on actual reality.
