Stunning in Silver and Gold

The president and first lady are attending a state dinner in New Delhi, India this evening, as guests of the president of India, Pratibha Patil, and her husband, Devisingh Patil. For the occasion, Mrs. O has chosen a stunning silver, floor-length skirt, paired with a bronze-gold top and gold belt at the waist. What a fabulous mix of metallics!

Update: Mrs. O wears a Sable Moroccan Tunic and Dune Velvet Skirt by Rachel Roy. As many of you know, Rachel Roy is an American designer of Indian and Dutch heritage.

Wow! This gown is so lovely. I like the way the skirt hem flows - and hope to get a closer view of the stunning fabric.

STUNNING!!!!

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 12:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterMica

Is that blue or silver? My monitor is so crap it could be either, or maybe even gunmetal gray. I like it, though...the pattern reminds me of a skirt by Rachel Roy I saw Iman wearing on the Project Rungay website:

http://tomandlorenzo2.blogspot.com/2010/11/in-or-out-iman-in-rachel-roy.html

Rachel Roy is an American designer of Indian heritage, so wearing her on this trip would be a generous nod to both countries.

ETA: Ah, Mrs. T changed the picture: I can tell a little easier now that it's silvery. If it's Rachel Roy I want credit for the ID! ;-)

Stunning!

Is it me or is FLOTUS slightly bent at the knees to appear less tall? The Indian media has been commenting on her "marvelous" height since she got there.

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 12:17 PM | Registered Commentermarabout40

this one is a real hit1 she should wear this silhouette more often.

WOW!!!

well played, FLOTUS, well played.

I've been following the India trip, not only for fashion reasons of course. I'm seeing a very interesting approach in her clothes: they all seem to resonate, echo, draw upon dazzling and colorful Indian aesthetics-yet Mrs. O is not mimicking nor dressing in traditional Indian clothing. It is both a bow, an acknowledgement and praise of Indian aesthetics without engaging in a borderline disrespectful mimicry of dressing in a sari and looking like she's "pushing it" and "out of context." Sartorial diplomacy if you will.

Every piece is classic. I've said it before: Mrs. O is a master creator of looks that fuses "western tailoring with global color and pattern aesthetics."

WOW! I had just concluded that the previous print skirt & black top was my absulute favorite of the trip, but now this new pic popped up and I am blown away. Any earlier little twinges of disappointment regarding her India wardrobe have been swept away by these last two outfits! When most people might expect a gown, our Michelle never fails to surprise with this sensational skirt and top. Also love, love, love her hairdo.

Oh my gosh, this is an amazing look!! I love all the details, the color, the fabric, the whole look. She is really in a class by herself. WOW. Would love to see some close-ups and more detail. Thank you, Mrs. T!

Quite lovely from head to toe. A beautiful contrast of colors.

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 12:41 PM | Unregistered Commentermarcelle

@Christina - LOL I think you nailed it....on the Rachel Roy website there it appears to be - worn with a beige-y bronze-y top. Does Mrs. O's top have some kind of pattern on the cuffs?

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 12:44 PM | Registered CommenterBevi

Hi, a small correction, the last names of President of India and her husband is Patil and not Pati. Thanks.

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 1:02 PM | Unregistered Commenterpoons

Sildi, amazing insight, and I couldn't agree more. poons, thank you for your note. I have corrected!

Ok, this is my favorite look for this trip......I LOVE IT!!! So elegant and First Lady-ish.
She does look like royalty, as someone pointed out on an earlier post:)
(And, yes, she looks like she is bending her knees......silly.)

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 2:08 PM | Registered CommenterLisa H

Wowza! Amazing how it takes on different tones depending on the light. Green tones inside & then it looks silvery in outside lights. Marvelous.

(re the knees: she probably just greeted someone of short stature -- most! -- and bent down a little. Caught not quite straightened up, it's just part of her natural empathy for people!)

Perfectly Lovely! She has looked beautiful all day long. The silver and gold are just stunning on her.

I think her fabulous arms look just as pretty in these long sleeves.

Fantastic!

OMG, she looks sooo beautiful and high glam.

I think this may be the favorite thing I have ever seen her in. The looks is perfect. Just perfect.

@Sildi: High-five! Fist bump!

There's nothing more than I can add (sartorially) that you all have summed up precisely. So, I'll say this:

Michelle Lavaughn Robinson Obama is "killing!" me all of her style, grace, intelligence, warmth and independence. I love what (I think) this woman represents--from the District of Columbia (and Chicago's Southside, too) to the Republic of India. As I've said before, here, she is a First among Firsts.

Obama 2012 (Thanks for that one, Sildi. :-)

Rachel Roy! Love the colors and as usual, the First Lady pulls this outfit off with style and elegance! They are LOVING our FLOTUS in India!

I believe that it was JFK who introduced him as the man who accompanied Jackie to Paris. Well, let me tell you as an American living in central India that President Barack Obama is the man who accompanied Michelle Obama to India and yes in this conservative part of India her long and per some, dowdy cotton frocks with sleeves and cardigans were much appreciated. God forbid that she had bared those lovely arms for dinner with the President of India and her husband. Smart woman.

This is for all the people who were complaining about Mrs. O's choice of clothes while on this trip:

While Indian designers bemoaned her decision not to wear a sari, Mrs. Obama’s covered-up, simple and discreet outfits here were also praised. “What she is wearing is reflective of her deep sense of respect for the Indian culture, and she has opted for colors and designs which do not attract attention to her,” designer Rina Dhaka told the Economic Times.

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 3:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterEsther

OMG...knock out. She looks so beautiful. I have felt such a wonderful vibe from this entire trip, and part of that reason is because Mrs. O has exuded such serentiy and confidence and inner (as well as outer) beauty. This outfit is icing on what has been a delicious weekend of outfits, IMO. Just gorgeous.

And just to reiterate...Mrs. O has definitely been wearing her hair back because of the climate and because of all of her events where she's interacting and moving around so much outside in the humidity.

My error. No wrap. Blew photo up really big - just the top and skirt, but in a darkened area.

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 4:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterBeeGee

When I first saw this picture, the first word that came to mind was pretty. She looks so PRETTY!! Her hair, make up, and earrings are on point.I really like that look of blouses with long gown like skirts, so this ensemble is a winner for me, just like Mrs. O always is. I wish we could see what kind of shoes she has on.

P.S. The President is handsome as usual.

Christina, looks like you get the credit!!

People who politely state that they don't care for a certain outfit, or often it's not the clothes per se, but the FIT or lack of fit, that's the problem, ARE NOT "complaining". Just because the New York Times published a very glowing report (which I very much agree with), doesn't mean that people who didn't care for a certain outfit should be blasted.
It is so hard to discern what is polite and what is not polite when you can't actually hear it, so please give people the benefit of the doubt before reacting. Thank you.

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 5:18 PM | Registered Commenterbabs

I think this is lovely too! I like seeing her in some new styles! Yes, some flatter her more than others but they all look nice.

Monday, November 8, 2010 at 5:33 PM | Unregistered Commenterfun

When I saw this picture, I thought "How proud I am of our first family." Always appropriate and yet always acesible in their presentation. I always look to Mrs. O for ideas of what is appropriate to wear in different situations.

I have to say, I really do like the top and skirt combination for evening. This sort of reminds me of an Eastern version of when Sharon Stone wore that white button down with the purple skirt to the Oscars back in the 90s.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_40qnHwnvbLY/S7oVZXmHeyI/AAAAAAAAAR8/9dLXtoENZg4/s1600-h/stylepantryboyfriendshirt8.jpg

I think this looks great and is best pulled off by tall women like Michelle. I would really love to see her do more of this for evening. It's really a glamorous look.

Lovely...and one more adjective, unique! Paring a gold tunic top with this beautiful and graceful silver skirt is a very original look; while keeping with appropriate dress for the Indian dinner.
Love it!
