Stunning in Silver and Gold

The president and first lady are attending a state dinner in New Delhi, India this evening, as guests of the president of India, Pratibha Patil, and her husband, Devisingh Patil. For the occasion, Mrs. O has chosen a stunning silver, floor-length skirt, paired with a bronze-gold top and gold belt at the waist. What a fabulous mix of metallics!

Update: Mrs. O wears a Sable Moroccan Tunic and Dune Velvet Skirt by Rachel Roy. As many of you know, Rachel Roy is an American designer of Indian and Dutch heritage.

Just reading the latest copy of Elle last night. look for more "floor-length gowns" to appear. It's "the new formal hemline" du jour. The skirt has a fish scale look to it. Very sharp. Looking for a close up of the earrings. She should make a mental note of this blouse. PERFECT cut for her. Stunning, just stunning. She wears metallics like nobody's business. Great make up and hair, too.

Christina, amazing! I just saw your comment, but you were definitely ahead of the official word from Rachel Roy's team. Jaylanie, that is a fabulous photo, and I have added, just for you!

Dear Mrs. T. How gracious of you to add this newer photo...oooh swoon! Thank you!

As an Indian-American, I think her fashion choice has been just right in India, paying homage to the culture with metallic fabric, and patterned designs, bejeweled jackets and so much more. Lovely!

F A B U L O U S !!! Wow, I agree with another reader who said, "She looks pretty!" Very pretty actually, and Mr. President is no slouch either..!

All of the appropriate adjectives have been used. So I will repeat. Mrs. O is simply stunning!

I have to add to the chorus of praise for this outfit and for all the outfits on the India leg of the Asian visit. A number of people here have said that her outfits are dowdy, but I have enjoyed them thoroughly since FLOTUS has finally worn many things that I can wear. Let me explain. Because of my religious beliefs, conservative Christian, I dress very conservatively--no pants, strictly long skirts, long sleeves. Although I love and admire the First Lady, there were very few thing that she wore, save for cardigans and bowed shirts, that I could wear and still stay true to my values. On this trip, she demonstrated you don't have to show skin to make an impression. I hope designers mass produce the grey disembarkation dress and the turquoise Som outfit. And this outfit is the piece de resistance. Kudos to FLOTUS Michelle. The next first lady will have a hard slog at trying to top her.

Stunning, lovely, elegant and amazing...so proud to be an American and so proud of our First Family.....

This is such an elegant look. I agree that this is probably my most favorite outfit. It is stately and simply breathtaking. This is truly the outfit of a very modern first lady. I have not been a entusiastic about some of her other choices for formal events. This is truly great choice.

Speechless. . . . . . OKAY, now I can breathe. Wow, just wow. The thing that I like about the skirt is that it seems to change color every time it's photographed. It's sliver, blue, scaley-fishy, metallic, grey, just stylish and modern but somehow also appropriately modest for the culture and women of India.

PERFECT!

Best looking thing I've ever seen her wear. Maybe she's starting to like the more classic looks? Aslo it's nice to see her wear a belt at her waist instead of under her bust.

The gown is beautful and the lady in it is stunning!

I think this skirt is the same material as a Rachel Roy design MIchelle wore at the event with Maria Shriver. She looks lovely.

especially in the close up, this is stunning. Her hair is flawless and sexy and she is unique as always. I know it's "different" but I really like it. Love her style.

The dress is absolutely beautiful and I agree that her makeup and hair steal the show. She has it all together.

I am completely speechless. The whole look from head to toe is simply sensational. Michelle Obama never disappoints when it comes to evening wear.

Very, very pretty! I have always been very fond of combinations of gold and silver, particularly in jewelry. I hadn't realized how well it would work in fabric....inspired!

The First Lady looks unforgivably stunning! This is now my most fav look. Bravo, Rachel Roy! In addition to what she's wearing, I was also curious about what she's eating in Asia! The Obama Foodorama blog had the evening's menu. Pineapple Halwa for dessert--divine!

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 4:59 AM | Unregistered CommenterMarcelisa

I love, truly love this metallic look!!!!. FLOTUS hair and makeup is simply divine.

By far the best yet--ensemble and hair! Elegant and unusual pairing, just like the First Lady.

Her make up looks flawless and the skirt and top is just gorgeous.

Sildi - I agree with every word you wrote. Couldn't have put it better myself, nor will I even try! You nailed it. She looks extraordinary. Beautiful, sophisticated, stylish, feminine, so pretty and SO chic. I haven't loved a lot of the Rachel Roy ensembles that Mrs O has picked in the past but this is outrageously lovely. What a triumph.

babs - couldn't disagree more with everything YOU wrote. And don't try and hide that you come here to slate Mrs Obama every day because we're not as dumb as you'd like us to be.

Willet784 - I must say, I think your post was in very bad taste. There are no rules for Christian women about what they can wear out in public. If your *personal* taste is to be covered up then be straight about that. Don't use religion as an excuse for doing that, or insinuate that it was nice of Mrs O to finally dress decently, you know, aside from the one blouse. If I've ever seen a famous woman dress decently and beautifully, with taste and style and respect for herself and ALL others, it's this woman. And that's in sleeveless tops, shorts, pencil skirts and shift dresses. She's always worn cardigans and long skirts, loose trousers and long dresses, and don't try and dress it up any differently.

Good lord. Yesterday we had someone comparing all posters to Lucifer, today we are back to The Cardigan As Satan's Warp and Weft (essay by me, 2009).

I normally love Mrs. O's outfits but not this one I'm afraid. I don't think that it fits her body type.

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 3:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterJuju

She is absolutely beautiful. Her pretty face, her makeup, her hair, her jewelry, and that fabulous outfit, I am so very proud of her! This is currently my fave. I love the mixing of the metalllics. The designer, Rachel Roy, is to be complemented.

I just love how elegant and graceful The First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama wears her clothes. They all look absolutely fantastic. Well done to the designers!

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 7:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterRoma

WOW! Look at our Michelle! This outfit is a home-run. I appreciate that she chose this ensemble for this State Dinner. Now, she would've undoudtedly chosen something much more elegant had the U.S. been hosting. But she's in an ultra conservative country as well as a guest. A guest with good taste will never try to outshine the hostess and she has accomplished that indeed. This in no way implies that you dress down, nor did she. She is/was simply displaying good form and being stylish at the same tiome. Talk about walking a tight rope......as someone said in another post, "NOBODY does it better"! Look at out First Lady, absolutely stunning in silver and gold!

I don't think anyone has mentioned it, but I love how Mrs. Obama's outfit reflects the same tones/colors of Mrs. Patil's sari. The bronze top compliments the bronze/gold edge of the sari. The green jewels in the belt matches the green embroidery in the sari. And the silver skirt reflects the gray/metalic in the sari. I would say congrats to the protocal people who helped the wardrobe people in this department. :-)

And just for fun, Mr. Patil's small touch of red on his breast pocket also reflect President Obama's tie.

I`ve died and gone to heaven!! I must get a skirt like that. Michelle Obama does the tucked-in thing like nobody`s business!!

I'm late to the party, but OMG, this is beautifully stunning! TEN!

Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 7:00 PM | Unregistered Commentero'Coutoure

loved the grey-gold theme, and the grey silk dress at the state dinner - Mrs. o kills me softly with her clothes, especially the grey-and-white she wore on arrival in bangalore...and mr. o killed me softly with his address to the joint houses of parliament - what a couple and how wonderful of them to make the effort of nuance, to speak to us through clothes (her) and words (him) - to be so inspiring - i know this post is (almost) a month after the event, but better late than never !
