A Classic Combo

The first lady gave a speech to the Joint Armed Forces Officers Wives Club at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, DC today, where she announced the president's proposed funding for military family support programs -- a record $8.8 billion. For further reading, click here.

Mrs. O wore a teal green herringbone sheath dress, accessorized with a black flower brooch at the shoulder for the event. Designers TBD.

I agree with DLK. It is cold right now in the Northeast! I think it looks odd to see Michelle in a sleeveless daytime dress. I loved her gray sheath with 3/4 length sleeves the other day. It looked more appropriate for the season.

I am excited to hear what the President has to say tonight and what Mrs. O will wear!!!!

L O V E the dress and the her hair - what a remarkable look for our most fashionable first lady.

@DLK - I'm sure by now you've rethought the "off season" comment and have reconsidered the idea that shortl sleeves reference Spring and Summer.

I like the way fashon rules seem to be bending or should I say "belting"

@DLK Do you mean that Jackie Kennedy also lacked "fashion sense", she wore a sleeveless dress to the White House staff Xmas party in 1962? The reason JO and MO embody iconic style is because neither of them dress like anyone else in the room.

Gorgeous! She looks fantastic in sheath dresses. I like the brooch too.

Can't wait to see what she wears tonight!

I suppose it's only *fitting* that on the anniversary of the infamous "Sleevelessgate" that this issue is dredged up!

LMAO

I am glad someone suggested Michelle may choose lightweight clothes due to being a warmer person. I am one of those and it is better to go lightweight or sleeveless than develop a too-warm 'glow'. I'm in New Zealand, and read this blog regularly - I think she looks amazing and is an incredible ambassador for your country.

Mrs. O looks fabulous and as always, genuine. It's not 42 degrees in the White House. She's not walking down Pennsylvania Ave. Sleeveless is fine and when you got it, flaunt it!

I'm not one to hold back if I'm not totally taken with the look.

I'm also not one to hold back when I love it.

This, I love.

Gorgeous, sleeveless and all. Her skin tone contrasts so well with the deep pine green (one of my fave colors -- that exact shade). Gorgeous makeup, hair, silhouette. She makes it all work.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 2:37 PM | Unregistered Commenterisn't she lovvvely?

I feel that Mrs Obama being comfortable enough in wearing a sleeveless piece of clothing speaks to her as a woman. So if everyone in the room is cold and has on sweaters - she HAS to be cold too? maybe she's just comfortable. Maybe she's used to cooler temperatures and this "cold" here in DC isn't that cold to her. I'm from New York, and to **ME** it rarely gets cold here in DC, though people here act as if we are in Alaska.

If Mrs Obama is comfortable going sleeveless, more power to her.

Maybe she is having alot of hot flashes and she prefers to be sleevlsss to stay cool. I would NEVER wear sleeveless in the winter but she is a fashion icon at this point and she is very powerful. She can do what she wants to do.

Dress is great, but totally inappropriate. It is winter! Daytime sleeveless shows that Mrs. Obama does not have good "fashion sense." Looking around the room there is not a single other person dressed this way---what is she thinking of? She needs some advice.
----------------------------------------------
@DLK she is thinking she resides in the white house and she can wear whatever she wants because she is an adult. And maybe the reason others are dressed that way is BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIVE IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND HAVE TO GO INTO THE COLD...

She does not have a fashion sense really, then why come here at all?

Its just weird reading the disrespect, what is she thinking of? How about what are you thinking of?
Nitpicking about stuff that don't matter. Well seems like more than 70% of the nation really like her and like her fashion sense

I would usually ignore but you were just rude and lacked common sense in your statement.

Flawless!
@DLK and Alison: you can't be serious?!? If she is comfortable, what does it matter? I am wearing a sleeveless blouse today at my desk and my sweater is on my chair if I need it. I am her same age and I get hot now more than ever! Aw, does she make you feel cold just looking at her? Then I guess you two must be the ones to bundle up! LOL!

@Alison

"I have to agree with DLK. I am getting frustrated with the sleeveless wardrobe in winter. Yesterday it was 45 degrees in DC. I think wearing sleeveless in winter shows her disconnect with the physical world. I wonder what temperature they keep the Whitehouse at. It's winter, turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater."

She can't wear a cardigan because people hate those, too.

She looks so good, love her hair and the dress.

When I am home, I tend to wear clothes that I feel comfortable in. Yes, it is winter over here in the UK too but here I am in my pyjama bottoms and a spaghetti strap top. I often wear shorts and skinny top when it is sub zero outsaide. My home is as warm as toast and I'm sure the White House is too.

Michelle is in HER home, she lives in the White House. Totally inappropriate is if she happened to take her guests over to see her vegetable garden without donning a coat first.

Ladies, if I worked out hard and had a fantastic body like Michelle's, I'd be damned if I had to wait until summer to show off my hard work. Even before she became first lady she was up at 5am (when the rest of us were still fast asleep) to get in her daily workout. She's earned to right to bare her arms in bleak mid winter.

"On my momma, on my hood, she look fly, she look good, touch her swag, wish you could..... SHE LOOK GOOD!" LOL ;-)

Fabulous! The First Lady looks especially good in jewel tones.

Does anyone besides me think she should NOT be wearing sleeveless dresses in January?
It IS COLD OUTSIDE!
I can't stand seeing women wearing sleeveless dresses in the wintertime in cold areas. I don't care how beautiful her skin is.
But it seems she is bent on showing off her arms, no matter what.

Forgive me, but that's the way I believe.
Sincerely,
April

I absolutely wouldn't wear a sleeveless dress in this weather. Even inside. But then, I'm always, always cold -- I could wear a sweater in the summer.

But to say that it "frustrates" one or that one "can't stand" it...I don't know. Isn't that getting kind of emotional about something that is really just her personal decision? It's not like there's going to be a rash of sleevelessness sweeping the country now, and we're all going to catch the flu.

If she ain't cold, it's not my problem.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 11:37 PM | Registered CommenterChristina

Now, let's see, she cannot go sleeveless...it's "inappropriate". Neither can she wear cardigans..."that's not how a First Lady should look", and oh, by the way, belts are out too. Am I missing anything? You guys out there can pile on now, but not you guys who are "frustrated" or those who "can't stand it". We don't want you to get any more upset than you already are, after all, the cold, winter weather is something we need to fear because it can do so much damage to us while we're in our well insulated and centrally air heated homes.

All this sleeveless talk is a bit over the top. I have a friend who constantly complains she's roasting even when the rest of us are shivering in the office (men included) in sweaters and long sleeves. My mother sleeps with the window open in mid-winter while my dad has 10 blankets piled on him to stay warm. The FLOTUS may just be one of those people that runs hot. It isn't a big deal. I looked around at the people attending the State of the Union tonight. It must have been very cold in there - grown men had on COATS! So I would have probably needed more than just 3/4 length sleeves, but obviously the FLOTUS did not. Someone mentioned a coat she had on earlier.....the FLOTUS surely could have put that on if she wanted to.
