Weekend Getaway

Photo by Jim Watson / Getty Images

Earlier today the Os departed for a weekend getaway at Camp David. We love Mrs. O's lavendar sweater set and breezy summer skirt. When we first saw this image, we thought the Os might be bound for Martha's Vineyard. Does anyone know when they officially go?

According to the Martha's Vineyard Times, www.mvtimes.com , they will be there during the last week of August. Here is a link to possible info on where they will be staying.

Looking forward to seeing all her fun late summer fashion!

One report stated the Obama family will be vacationing on Martha's Vineyard from mid August until around Aug 31. Michelle Obama and the girls are to arrive at Martha's Vineyard Airport Aug 16 or Aug 17. President Obama is to arrive around Aug 20. That was reported around July 19 from sources other than the White House so may not be the exact dates.

Mrs. O just looks so cute and fashionable on her way to Camp David! The picture of summer.
I thought she and the girls were going earlier in August. (?)

Summertime. Summertime. Sum sum summertime!

(sorry, couldn't resist -- just caught that fab summer song on YouTube.)

Mrs. T -- Did you see pix of Mrs. O at the Norfolk Naval Station Friday? Gorgeous summer dress! Happy smiles as she greeted returning marines & sailors.

Got timed out of my previous post.

An article in the Vineyard Gazette by Sam Bungey around July 24 also stated there were unconfirmed reports that MO and the girls may decide to come to the Vineyard a bit earlier, possibly as houseguests of Vineyard friends, before the president joins them.

That same article listed the rental property as the Blue Heron Farm off South Road in Chilmark, 28. 5 acres which spans the Chilmark and West Tisbury town line and overlooks Town Cove, the westernmost finger of the Tisbury Great Pond. There are four dwellings on Blue Heron Farm property, including a white Victorian farm house, a reconstructed Pennsylvania hay barn and a Vermont shed, the latter two of which date back to the 1800s. The farm was described as quiet and private, with an apple orchard, flower and vegetable gardens, stone walls, a swimming pool, golf practice tee and small basketball court. The lease was thought to include access to the private portion of Squibnocket Beach. The article also stated that a rental agreement for the farm will comprise three leases, one to be held by the Obamas, another by the Secret Service and a third by a White House entourage. It was also reported that the Obamas treated the transaction as a standard Vineyard summer rental, from payment terms to questions about bringing the family dog.

The choice of Blue Heron Farm was said to have been made after a thorough investigation of Island rental properties which began in the spring. Senior White House aides and members of the Secret Service examined and rejected more than 20 properties. It was stated that there was an early concentration of research in Oak Bluffs where the Obamas have stayed on several occasions and have longtime friends with Island connections. But security concerns, including the potential for traffic bottlenecks that would be created by presidential travel in the bustling town, put the properties out of contention.

Looking at the drape and movement of Michelle's skirt - what's the fabric.. something sheer? Looks like bands of color at the hem matching her top. Like it.

Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 10:03 PM | Registered CommenterJazz

I like it, too, Jazz. I think that is probably a double-layer skirt, judging from the way it hangs. I have something like it from Boden (but I don't think hers is from there.) Mrs. Robinson also looks stylishly casual. Not every grandmother can rock capris :)

The president's birthday is Tuesday -- he and I were born one day apart! Wonder if they will celebrate at Camp David or back in D.C.? Maybe both?

Darling outfit from the back, Mrs. O. I would definitely like to see the front.
BTW, I will buy the brooch/broach argument, but I will never buy the cummerbund/cumberbund argument. It's just not so! Next thing I know, someone will say that "cudos" is an acceptable substitute for "kudos." Never! Besides, shouldn't we be using the proper spellings for words instead of "substitutes?"

Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 11:08 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Hattie, the President will be back Sunday afternoon, he has a full schedule on Monday and so far, on Politico he has nothing scheduled yet for Tuesday.

I love the skirt it is so cute.

I saw this picture and thought, "That's her MOTHER?" She looks fantastic!

I love MO's skirt too. In the Daylife photo there is less contrast at the hem. The fabric is quite sheer - like a very light batiste. In the old days, we called this handkerchief cotton. It will be interesting to see what it turns out to be, and "who done it." .

I hope they will leave for vacation before mid-August. POTUS (and probably FLOTUS) needs more than 2 weeks of downtime. That is not even close to being a rest.

Glad they're taking Bo - though I'm not sure he's going to contribute to the restfulness!

Politico reported that during one of the morning press briefings that Gibbs started holding this past week in his office that Gibbs said that the President would be spending time at Camp David with his family during the week before they go to Martha's Vineyard. No dates were given.

My guess is that they celebrated Saturday with some of their Chicago friends at Camp David. He's coming back late morning Sunday so he can play golf. Betcha.

Next Sunday he goes to a North American summit in Mexico. Would be nice to see Michelle and the girls with him, but not expecting it.

Good grief. Malia has everything for her dad: his long face, his posture, his gait, even his high cute behind (sorry Mr. President, but you do have a cute behind). Sasha, on the other hand, is a little clone of her mom. Look at the backward swing of their arms. Such a lovely family.

BTW, how come we didn't have a new thread for her appearance at the Norfolk Naval Station on Friday? She was so gorgeous and gave such a lovely speech.

I second marabout40's request for a thread on Mrs. Obama's appearance at the Norfolk Naval Academy. She looked amazing in her beautiful red and white summer dress!

I'm so glad that the Obamas get away from the White House regularly. I can only imagine that living in that "fish bowl" setting would begin to wear one down. They all look nice and summery and I hope they had a great weekend.

LOL @ marabout40...yes the two girls are perfectly split between their parents, and yes the president has a cute butt! The whole family is adorable.

And I was wondering the same thing, Mrs. T...why didn't you put the picture of her from Norfolk. There was one picture of her, although breezy, it showed a good enough view of the dress. Here's the picture: http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Michelle-Obama/ss/events/pl/050108michelleobama;_ylt=AvA_g7oZWeBXzm4YOmHUj8PmWMcF#photoViewer=/090731/480/2bf3222b4c7046beaec8b92179f46590

Don't they go to church at Camp David? THere is a chapel there with a minister who preaches to the staff and the first family. They decided not to bring the drama-crowds, cameras-to a local church.

I am truly disgusted and appalled by two previous posts: "Michelle" how dare you butcher the English language like that! That is not a case of a couple "typos"--it almost looks like you typed it that way on purpose. Nobody wants to read that kind of nonsense!!
Also, ivy979, you looked at Sasha and declared that she is pudgy, just because she is not skinny as a rail? How dare you make a comment like that about ANYBODY, especially an 8 year old CHILD??!

Are you kidding me Strong Foru: "I'm so glad the Obamas get away from the white house regularly...."????? If the Obamas didn't want to live in a fish bowl....they shouldn't have run.....and although their outfits are nice looking.....it really bothers me to see pictures of them going to so many "vacations" when the rest of the country is in such bad condition. I would say they'd act more considerate tword the public......and maybe take less right now!!! Mr. Obama is president....and being in the white house and running the country is his JOB! I believe at regular ones you don't take vacations every month. (This probably won't get posted right =)

Monday, August 3, 2009 at 2:09 PM | Unregistered CommenterMrs. N

I find Mrs. N's post very amusing because former president GW Bush spent almost 1/3 of his entire time in office on vacation. These folks not that much - they go to Camp D on weekends... this has always been the case for 1st families. I think your issue is bigger than the Obama's going on vacation. Has POTUS even taken a real vacation? I know FLOTUS and girls did the European twirl but the president did not. Give me a break! He is doing a fine job with the fine mess left behind. Oh, by the way, the FLOTUS is just hitting all the right notes!

Monday, August 3, 2009 at 3:35 PM | Registered CommenterYOLA

Karen: I'm with you on the slip question. Even though the skirt is adorable, it is too sheer not to have something underneath.

Monday, August 3, 2009 at 5:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Really, going to Camp David for a short weekend hardly counts as a "vacation." People who basically live at their jobs --fire fighters, oil rig workers, etc--really need to get away from their job site occasionally, and POTUS is no different. Mrs. N, most people don't take vacations every month but they get the weekend off EVERY WEEK and the Obamas get maybe one in three weekends "off" though he seems to get a lot of work done at Camp David anyway.

Monday, August 3, 2009 at 5:51 PM | Unregistered CommenterSandy Beach

While Misinformation and lies works on Faux, it does not work on this site. Those "vacations" to Europe are part of the job. G-8 summits and meeting with international leaders are what EVERY president does. George Bush did it, Clinton did it and every president before Obama did it and they brought their FAMILIES along. The first lady on most important occasions travels along with her HUSBAND. I know because of color some believe that Mrs. Obama should be in the kitchen fixing pancakes but ALL presidential families go on vacation!! All presidential familes go to Camp David and just because the Obamas are BLACK does'nt mean they dont get the same privileges.

I'm SURE this wont be posted but if Mrs N...post can be posted so can MINE!!

Au contraire, Ladies of the Undergarment Police -- Mrs. O doesn't need a slip with this skirt because it's got s sewn-in second fabric layer. Look at other pix and you can see that feature. Perfect for a swish-swish summer afternoon.

Monday, August 3, 2009 at 6:33 PM | Unregistered Commenterdesertwind

Re undergarment police--if this skirt is lined, it's too thin a lining! Cute skirt for home or with a slip.

Monday, August 3, 2009 at 10:02 PM | Unregistered Commenterjenh

On the vaction topic... There are no real vacations for any President. Maybe the First Ladies and the rest of the family can have vacation time. But vacations for the Presidents? I do not think so. They still receive daily intelligence and security briefings and the main staffer are available at all times. They can be away from the White House but the responsibitlies and obligations follow the Presidents.

Monday, August 3, 2009 at 11:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterMJMR

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 3:45 AM | Registered CommenterAudrey

Mrs. N--I agree completely with you. It's time to get to business and not go on vacation!

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 10:32 AM | Registered CommenterPhyllis W

Can I ask why people think she needs a slip?

And this vacation talk is really weird. I would just add that his birthday is today, he spent Saturday celebrating it, so he left Saturday, to return on Sunday, after spending ONE NIGHT celebrating his birthday with friends and family.

It's also important to remember that he receives daily briefings (on the economy and national security) every single day. If I'm learning about security threats on a daily basis, I don't know how much relaxing I'm ever really able to do...it just doesn't seem possible to turn off the brain, the strategizing, the thinking, and the worrying. So just because he is physically somewhere else, doesn't mean mentally he's vacationing too. He strikes me as the type of person who never really is "off."

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 11:56 AM | Registered CommenterIVA

I would love for this to be a strictly fashion blog about Michelle. Yet, people wander in to make snide comments and blatant demands concerning the first family's travels and finances. It could be racial bias. Maybe envy has colored them green. I'm not privy to the root of their disdain, but this debate needs to be shipped elsewhere.

I don't think the skirt needed a slip, but I also haven't worn a slip since the age of 12. Didn't realize they still made them until recently when my sister and I went on a trip and she had one... I was like what is that?!? You still wear those?!? I agree with McKinley... fashion only! I came on one day and there were all kind of grammar lessons going on and some of the tones were rather condescending. Also, everyone should be able to go on vacation... I hate the whole, if I'm suffering, everyone should suffer attitude. The President will still be President even if he's not at the white house! Enough of a rant... Happy Birthday President Obama! Fashion anyone?!?

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 2:10 PM | Registered CommenterDoc Sue

Please calm down people.....I'm just stating the obvious....and obviously anyone on here only cares about what Flotus and Potus (lol) wear. Hopefully that gets us through this "Depression" or "Recession", whatever President calls it. And this is nothing to do with racial bias, as some are too quick to call. I would have this comment for a white or black president who would do the same right now. They haven't even been in office for a year.....and have probably been away from White House more than in it. Outfits are lovely to look at....but there's things more important.

Because there is more interest in all things Obama, we see more pix of their downtime. Because Obamas don't own a spread in Texas or a family compound in Kennebunkport, we see more pix of their downtime. Because they've got young children, we see more pix of their downtime. Because they're city people who like to do city things, we see more pix of their downtime.

All this is grist for the mill of those who don't care for Obama.

Heaven for those of us who do.

So, let's just ignore the trolls, okay? They're mischief-makers who cannot be reasoned with because, ultimately, they don't want to be.

I guess some will be disgusted to learn the President is going to Indiana tomorrow to talk about the economy, seeing as he doesn't get anything done and all. Probably would be better to stick to fashion, and the President's debut on the best dressed list and Mrs. Obama garnering more votes than anyone before.
