Ready to Roll

Today marks the 2009 White House Egg Roll, and a myriad of events are being streamed live on Whitehouse.gov. Click here to have a peek. Mrs. O kept things casual for the festive occasion, dressed in a green tie front knit top by Thakoon, yellow cardigan, navy nylon jacket and pale blue cropped pants. The Easter Bunny, it seems, has opted for the same ensemble from years past.
"Our goal today is just to have fun," Mrs. O told the crowd. "We want to focus on activity and healthy eating...We want everyone to think about moving their bodies...to get out and play." A video of the opening remarks and Egg Roll action from Politico:

Wow...Double Dutch (Jump rope) at the White House...
This i gotta' see!
They're doing casual chic. They all look so nice. Love Michelle's hair and makeup!
Wow, I can't believe the White House has to accommodate 30 THOUSAND people at this event. Kudos to the core staff that actually pulls it off each year.
Casual chic is right, Tess. I looked at some pictures on HuffPo of previous egg rolls and was thinking to my self that the 1st Ladies and Presidents looked mighty formal (suits for both). I think MrsO looks lovely and I always enjoy seeing Mrs R and the girls!!
Where are the pics of today's events?
Anika, I am sure they will be up shortly. Try checking the Yahoo news photo page. And you can also watch some events live by following Mrs. T's link.
It's 10:45 and I am watching the live stream via whitehouse.org (without sound, of course... at work). POTUS just finished (what looked like) a rousing story and is off, and now the Obama ladies + the First Grandmother are all reading a story together.
My two comments:
1. I can't believe how TALL Malia is getting!!! Seems she has sprouted another 4 inches since January.
2. Sasha's pink tights and Chuck Taylors are fierce! Work it!!!
I'm watching the live stream. Michelle looks especially pretty today. I like how her glam squad is keeping her hair bouncy and her makeup natural but still polished.
And I like the outfit alot. Much better than previous First Ladies in fancy brocade suits and whatnot. Her outfit shows she's actually gonna interact with the children and play on their level. Who wears Oscar De La Renta suits to go play in?! LOL They all look really pretty, even the President looked pretty! LOL
And why are the childrens undergarments important??????????
Pleeezeee!!!!
It's going to be hard enough for these kids growing up in the spotlight. Let's not set a precedent of commenting on the Obama kids and puberty setting in, people.
Jeez ceeg... Not that she would ever read this, but let's be sensitive in how we comment about this young teen. It's not going to be easy to go through these years in the public eye but surely we can make it easier.
They do look very nice. BTW, we do not need to criticize previous first ladies when praising Mrs. O. They have their style and Mrs. O has hers. I don't really see anything bad about the Malia comment. It just seems an innocent and cute observation about her growing into a little lady. Comne on guys, let us not take EVERYTHING so seriously. Have fun with the Easter Bunny!
I still haven't actually seen any pictures! GRR. I really want to see Michelle's "casual chic" outfit! Yahoo news is being very slow about updating.
Also, agreed Lilly. Ceeg's comment was like something my grandmother would say. Just a totally harmless comment. But it's also insensitive which is why I had said that we should refrain from commenting on these things.
I know - what's with no pictures. They've already welcomed everyone, done storytelling, and Fergie has performed. There has to be many pictures! Maybe the White House has limited who can be there covering this event?
Also, if ceeg meant the comment innocently, then I apologize for reacting so harshly. I still think it's inappropriate, and from the looks of other people's responses, I would say that discussing the little girls in such a way should not be done so as not to strike the wrong tone.
Ooh, I just saw video! Michelle is wearing a bright green top, under a brown jacket, paired with, I think khakis. She looked very youthful and was having fun playing with the kids.
There are several videos at MSNBC, in case you missed the live showing earlier.
IVA, I know! But if you go to MSNBC, scroll down slightly to Politics, and click on the headline about the White House egg roll, there are some videos.
For what it is worth, I reported ceeg's comment. I thought it was inappropriate for a public message board. Your grandmother saying something in the privacy of your home is one thing, a strange saying it to thousands of people in public is quite another. Thank you MrsT for removing it (and I guess it is bad that we are commenting on it. I would not have if there had not been so many other comments)
Anywho..... Several pictures on daylife, but no great pictures of MrsO and her outfit. The POTUS sure looked cute acting out Where the Wild Things Are! LOL http://www.daylife.com/photo/09MG5uQaA59TT?q=easter+egg+roll
Daylife has finally updated and Michelle is wearing a BLUE jacket, not a brown one, over a really lovely green "secretary style" shirt with a loose bow at the front, and fitted white capri pants. And you can see in some of the pictures that she's wearing an orange scarf or cardigan, under the jacket.

They all look so happy, don't they? Oh, and Dr. Jill looks fabulous in that light aqua dress, too.

Aw!! It took me a few seconds to figure out there are three different (dot)s to replace but you are much smarter than me since my links to pictures of Michelle are stuck in moderation. That is an adorable picture. That little redhead stole the show during the egg roll.
Also, I was reading on ABC news all about the theme for today's event. Michelle/Desiree put a lot of thought into it:
The First Lady, dressed in a green shirt, blue jacket and seersucker capri pants and silver flats then addressed the crowd.
"Our goal today is just to have fun,” she said, "We want everybody to think about moving their bodies."
This year's Easter Egg Roll theme is "Let's Go Play," with an emphasis on health and fitness. In addition to the traditional egg roll, there are a variety of activity stations. There is a kids’ kitchen and organic garden, a sports court with basketball and soccer, the "Hop to it!" area featuring jump rope, dance and yoga, a story time stage, and an arts and crafts station cleverly called "Eggpress Yourself."
Azzadine Alaia came to Mrs. O's defense!! yay!! he put Oscar De La Renta in his place!! ouch!!

Great video of the event

Hey Chicagoan, where did you see Jill? I have not come across any pictures of her.
The live streaming on the White House website is terrific. POTUS just read a story!
getty has some amazing pictures
http://www.gettyimages.com/Search/Search.aspx?contractUrl=2&language=en-US&family=editorial&p=michelle%20obama&assetType=image&src=quick#1
It looks like they were having so much fun. Since electing our new president I can't even contemplate the idea of electing an older man into office. They look so energetic and young out there. I Love seeing them !!!!
The Getty pictures are great and very clear. I just realized that Mrs. O's slacks are lightly striped.
This look is far dressier than I had realized from the first grainy video. I thought the jacket was denim, but it's actually trench coat material and it has a slight sheeen to it. And the pants are actually seersucker (per ABC news) rather than khaki.
But it's still a look that lets her run around and participate in all the activities. I love that the entire family, including Mrs. Robinson wore such bold colors.
One thing is for sure - all the Obama gals 'layered' today

Jenna, you've probably found it already, but it was in Getty Images (they always have the fastest & best pics). They're all walking down the drive, with the WH on the upper right of the photo. Mrs. R and Sasha are in the lead, followed by Mrs. O and Malia, then the Bidens at the back.
Jenna,
Here are some Jill Biden photos:
http://www.daylife.com/search?q=jill+biden
I would definitely describe what Mrs. O is wearing as casual chic. She looks so nice with all the bold colors layered from the waist up, yet she still looks comfortable to move around for other activities. I'm glad she's not wearing a dress. She looks elegant and sporty at the same time. Her makeup looks great, and her hair looks shiny and bouncy. I'm also partial to the fake eyelashes that she wears from time to time. It adds a great softness to her face and makeup, especially from a distance.
I don't know how other First Ladies could do it in the dresses, but this family looks more comfortable and approachable. I also love the colors that Mrs. Robinson has on. Oh, how I wish my mother would dress like that in colorful layers instead of black all the time.
Everyone looks like they're having a good time which is nice to see with all the negativity on the news every day.
"Oscar De La Sorry Pants" was on the View saying that he apologizes for his comments. Mrs. T please make this a new topic with the video link, so everyone can comment on it.
Joane, maybe you should post the link for us? I really want to see and comment on this (rather late) apology, but I like the idea of the main post being about something positive (the White House Easter Roll) rather than about Oscar's thoughtlessness.
Also, yes, I found the pictures of Jill! I absolutely adore her. I wish she would be out and about more often.
Oscar de la Rente on the View:
http://theyaketyyak.blogspot.com/
hello,
I agree Jenna I think this topic should be separate from the Easter happiness but here is the link if anyone wants to see it. Mrs T make this a separate topic please. Also add what Azzadine Alaia said about Oscar from Layo G post above.
http://abcnews(dot)go(dot)com/Video/playerIndex?id=7324958
In fact, is there any reason at all to beat a dead horse (i.e., the de la Renta comments) any further?
Agreed. I have so had enough of that man and his opinions that nobody asked him for.
Hey, what do you ladies think is that orange fabric peeking through the jacket? At first I thought it was a cardigan, but in another picture I saw that her cardigan today was yellow. Is the orange somehow part of the jacket? Or is it a scarf or something? I can't quite figure it out.
haha i just watched the view clip. that old guy is so pitiful, after his insulting comments about mrs. o.
next time he will think before he speaks, but i am over it. i can see he regrets what he said.
Hey I found a cute pic of the First Dog, Bo, playing with President Obama (running down the hall). It was so cute, I just thought you might want to see it:
http://www.daylife.com/photo/0axEecj8oNdB7?q=barack+obama
Oh and as for the easter egg roll (although I could not watch the live stream video because I was in class), I think that the Obamas are great people to open up the White House like that...BEAUTIFUL!
Jenna,
I thought the orange was the zipper fabric. Just like the zipper fabric on the jacket she wore in the garden was a different color.
From what I can tell, Jenna, it's the zipper. It looks like it's banded in orange -- just another little detail that makes the jacket pop. I think she's got on the green top, a yellow cardigan (looks like the JCrew from the pre-inaugural Kid's concert), then the jacket.
Today was a good day for layering. It's unseasonably cold around here! I'm ready for some warmth!
(Talk to me in three months when I'm dying from the humidity)
I love the look. Nice and casual, yet stylish. She just looks so happy today, that it makes whatever she would be wearing look wonderful.
Back to the Easter Egg Roll:

Here is a little guy who wears glasses, and as a glasses-wearing child, I know that we generally were not told how cute we were. We were often teased. But now he has had the experience of having POTUS lift him up to help him shoot a basket, and a photo to prove it. Self-esteem goes up 1,000%.
Also, my dad had a cotton windbreaker like the president's.
