Ready to Roll

Photo by Mandel Ngan /AFP/Getty Images

Today marks the 2009 White House Egg Roll, and a myriad of events are being streamed live on Whitehouse.gov. Click here to have a peek. Mrs. O kept things casual for the festive occasion, dressed in a green tie front knit top by Thakoon, yellow cardigan, navy nylon jacket and pale blue cropped pants. The Easter Bunny, it seems, has opted for the same ensemble from years past.

"Our goal today is just to have fun," Mrs. O told the crowd. "We want to focus on activity and healthy eating...We want everyone to think about moving their bodies...to get out and play." A video of the opening remarks and Egg Roll action from Politico:

From Politico dot com:

Traveling makeup artist

Here’s one reason Michelle Obama received such high marks for her image in Europe: she is the first FLOTUS to include a full-time makeup artist in her traveling entourage, the NY Post reported over the weekend. From the Post: Makeup artist Ingrid Grimes-Miles, 49, helped create Obama's signature look on her inaugural trip to Europe last week.

Grimes-Miles, who has been working with the first lady for six years, now splits her time between DC and Chicago, where she dolls up morning-news anchors for WGN TV.

The first lady’s office told the Post that the Obamas privately paid for the travel expenses for Grimes-Miles and "First Hairstylist" Johnny Wright, 31, who flew aboard Air Force One as official guests of the president.

Well I say "Bravo!" to Ingrid Grimes-Miles, b/c MO's makeup is impeccable. She always has a lovely glow, and that lip shade sends me to the moon - so soft and feminine.

I too am perplexed about the orange, but I am sure someone here is on the case checking out collections - that's what is so great about visiting this site several times daily!

That little redhead was just adorable - reminded me of my own sweet girl several decades ago!

I loved watching the Obamas during story time in the attached link. The whole family had a part--even Mrs. Robinson. The best part were the kids not wanting Michelle to leave at the end of the story at around the 10:00 mark. They all wanted hugs and you can really feel Mrs. O's warmth, and the kids could too. Kids can sense when you're genuine.

The little redhaired girl was adorable -- I hope her parents are on cloud 9 right now. There's also some pictures going around the Internet of the president picking up a little boy to help him make a basket, and they are also very cute together.

I think that Obama, because he has young kids now, has a really nice, positive and unforced way of interacting with them. It's sweet. You can see more of that at a blog called Yes We Can (Hold Babies) that was just pictures of Obama interacting with kids during the election season. (Google the blog name to find it.)

Christina -
I saw those photos a while ago and that is a great site! The Obamas are People.

CBS News with Katie Couric is doing a piece on Bo, the First Dog - it just came on the 7 pm news.

I just have one more thing to say about today's event. You can brand me a hater, I don't care!!!! I have the right to say what's on my mind! Which is...

The bunny scares me.

The entire family looks great! They all seem to be having so much fun. The girls are great sports. Mrs. O looks perfectly dressed for the day. Young and fun!

Grimes-Miles and Wright are doing a fantastic job.

I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the pictures of the event. You can tell our first family is just so genuine. They've invited the neighbors for a party in the back yard. Obama looks so natural reading a book or helping a kid make a basket. The entire family looks appropriately relaxed casual. I'll bet everyone that attended felt welcomed.

Christina,

Earlier today Time/ThePage ran a poll

The question:
Who do you like more-- Bo, the Obamas' new Portuguese water dog, or the giant Easter Bunny at the White House Easter Egg Roll?

The results:
Bo: 89%
Bunny: 11%

Christina, that was funny!

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 12:12 AM | Unregistered CommenterJoane

I can't believe 11 percent of online voters liked the bunny. Just look at that face! It's diabolical! Look at the way it is staring at Michelle, like it would like to take a chomp out of her neck.

And I don't think I need to tell anyone here that the vest-and-no-pants look is very out of style.

(If the bunny had been wearing a cardigan I would have DIED)

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 12:42 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristina

Christina!!!
You are right the bunny forgot to put on her pants/skirt!
It is a girl bunny ya know cause she is wearing purple eyeshadow.
Can't wait to see if Fox News or Jon Stewart will be talking about the naked bunny at the White House. LOL!

Bevi: The little redhead toddler was absolutely precious...

I've been away for a weeks holiday and OH MY it's good to be back! But I have a lot to catch up on....

Great casual outfit for being out and about and active for the Easter Egg Roll - and I have to say, it looks like the whole day was a smash hit for the attendees. Loads to do, good food, good sports activities... well done the First Family for walking the walk!

Hello everyone, I'm not sure if anyone saw this picture. Mrs. T, it would be nice if you could show this picture next to the other one. She's fixing her clothes but you can get a better look of her outfit.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but for anyone else in the New York City area, FIT will be having an Isabel Toledo retrospective beginning in June, and Mrs. O's Inaugural Day ensemble will be part of the exhibition.

Michelle is doing one of her Department Visits today. She is speaking at the Department of Homeland Security, alongside Janet Napolitano.

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 10:52 AM | Unregistered CommenterJenna

I KNOW Michelle has said that she isn't pregnant, but in at least one of the pictures today, she definitely has a "tummy."

It's probably just wishful thinking on my part that her "tummy" is really a "Baby O." :-)

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 11:10 AM | Unregistered CommenterSailorsgirl

Mrs. O just spoke at homeland security! She's wearing an emerald green jacket with a beautiful little bejeweled bumblebee brooch. I haven't found a full-body shot yet.

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 11:51 AM | Unregistered CommenterJenna

Ok, she's wearing black slacks and a short-sleeved green jacket, over a striped purple shirt. I actually remember this same combo that I remember from some point on the campaign trail. That lovely brooch is definitely new. I really like that it's a bee rather than the more traditional butterfly.

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 11:58 AM | Unregistered CommenterJenna

Btw, according to Politico, the first lady is not going to the summit of the americas in Trinidad and Tobago

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 12:11 PM | Unregistered Commenterlife101

Jenna, has Mrs. O worn butterfly pins before? I thought flowers were her traditional choice.

And let's hope she doesn't apply the thinking Madeleine Albright did when choosing a brooch to wear; she was known for wearing a bee pin when she expected talks to amount to a "sting" to the other parties. Of course, she also often wore a dove as well! If anyone is interested, Albright's jewel collection will be on display at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York from Sept 30 - Jan 31 (2010). It's based on her book, "Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box."

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 12:52 PM | Unregistered CommenterChicagoan

Chicagoan, right, Mrs. O's signature is definitely the flower brooch. But when I saw the picture from a different angle I thought it was a butterfly (which is pretty standard fare for brooches) so delightful when I saw it was actually a bumblebee!

And that's a very cool anecdote about Madeleine Albright. Though I bet Mrs. O meant no such thing for this very friendly meeting.

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 1:06 PM | Unregistered CommenterJenna

Ah, my misunderstanding, Jenna. It does rather look like a butterfly from some angles, doesn't it? I'm wondering who it's by; I don't believe it's vintage, but you never know.

I liked that "Twice as Nice" photo essay linked above. It's funny how many of us (me included) were critical of those suede fur-lined boots, and they've been worn before! Same with the patent leather boots that were deemed too fancy for the garden groundbreaking.

Mrs. O is just so normal with her clothes...even normal with her "mistakes"...it's just that all her clothes cost more than mine, and are probably much better made. I want them!

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 1:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristina

Shots of the green jacket/stripe shirt outfit. What can I say? Interesting combo, Mrs O. Has she worn this outfit/combination before?

Can I just say I like that she had the nerve to wear that outfit to speak today. It's really cute, doesn't match, but still actually matches. It's young without being too young and the fit is good and the pants look really good on her butt. Just had to say that. It's a cute little number and something that you would not associate with "First Lady"! Oscar will have a fit!

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at 1:45 PM | Unregistered Commentertess

Does anyone know who the designer of the jacket is? It looks a little deconstructed a la the Watanabe cardigan.

It gives off a nurse/surgical togs vibe which keeps me from really liking it, but I'm curious about how its made.
