Pretty in Pink for People

Image via People

First Lady Mrs. O is featured in the latest issue of People magazine, on stands Friday. On the cover and throughout the feature, Mrs. O wears Tracy Reese's Guipure Lace Kimono Dress in Dried Azalea. We are delighted to see Tracy Reese in the First Lady's wardrobe mix! In the interview, Mrs. O discusses progress on finding First Puppy O and how the First Family is adjusting to life at the White House. To learn more, the Today Show ran a great segment this morning:

A full length image of Mrs. O's Tracy Reese dress follows after the jump.

I very rarely watch the Today Show but was sooo happy to have caught this segment this morning and now I'm looking forward to getting the magazine.

The pictures that will appear inside the magazine look really, really lovely. She just looks extremely approachable, in a way that the posed shots from Vogue understandably did not evoke. The dress and the hair both make her look younger, but actually she looks more like a young Mom than anything else.

This is one of my favorite magazine spreads Mrs. O has done. It is second only to the great family shots that appeared in Essence last summer.

Love that color and the lace overlay! Sooo glad to see Mrs. O finally in Tracy Reese. I'm especially a fan since she went to my high school and my mother was her guidance counselor! Now, if I could only get her to send some clothes my way... :)

Another jaw-dropper. Gorgeous!!!

Ms. O's sartorial choices provide inspiration and orientation in style matters for women 35+, lace in this case...hmm, it even rhymed ;) . As a 37 year old, size 10-12 woman, I am always on the lookout for fashion ideas that are age appropriate yet fresh, playful and sensual. Like many others, I've found in Mrs. Obama a guiding light.

She looks fantastic in any shade of magenta-red-purple-blue as well as black and white...Mrs. O should DEFINETELY avoid earth tones, including orange and olive greens (the only quibble I had with her inaugural Toledo suit).

With no lining under the shoulder part of the lace, this dress looks very contemporary. It's an accomplishment to pull off a full-length lace dress and not have it look too mother-of-the-bride, but Mrs. O and Tracy Reese have done it. Having a bold silver watch as the accessory helps modernize the look, too.

Another mag to add to my collection looks like! I bought the Vogue earlier this week at the grocery store, although I have not had time to really sit down and look at it.

I love the dress that she is wearing here! I also really like the way they have her hair. She would look nice with a shorter 'do like this, but I understand the reluctance to cut it. I enjoy the freedom of pulling my hair back in to a pony tail and I have seen the First Lady do the same. Although I am sure that she had access to many stylists so she does not have to pul it back unless she wants to.

Love the details from the People editor at the Today show.

Ok...I am gushing now...

she looks so beautiful. Do yall believe they will have another child?

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 1:09 PM | Unregistered Commenterjojo

The dress is sexy yet subtle.
I love it.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 1:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterJay

Okay, that's the first unattractive thing I've seen on her - color, cut, fabric, blech. Is this the lingerie trend they were talking about at the Oscar's red carpet? Been there, done it - what's NEW and DIFFERENT? Must style repeat every 20 or so years?

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 1:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterMrs Y

The people cover outshines Vogue because her smile looks more relaxed and natural. I like the side swept bangs, almost a sixties Audrey Hepburn look. That pink color is yummy on her.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 1:13 PM | Unregistered Commenteredwina

She looks great, although it's not one of my favorite looks. Maybe it's the lace, or the shade of pink...

Regardless, I love her hairstyle and would be interested to read that article!

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 1:15 PM | Unregistered CommenterJen

BTW-Can I just say how gorgeous Tracy Reese's clothes are? I'd never heard of her...now I am awestruck!!

Sorry about the back-to-back double post....

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 1:16 PM | Unregistered CommenterSilvia

That pink is one of her best colors-she looks delicious! I love too that she gets the benefit of the look of a short hair cut which emphasizes those cheekbones and eyes, but without cutting her hair which still gives her style versality for her next episode. She looks poised happy and relaxed, which means the haters will be out in force any minute now!

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 1:18 PM | Unregistered Commenterdavesoko1

She is beautiful! Just glowing and look at those arms!

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 1:25 PM | Unregistered CommenterYOLA

@Jen - I know what you mean... it's the fabric, for me. Everything else is great - color, smile, make-up (but did they photoshop that eyebrow?). Maybe it's just because I have a dress in this fabric and hate how it feels.

Overall, though, another great cover!

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 2:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterChicagoan

Love the color! Mrs. O can work the lace where I could not pull that off with the shape of my figure. I like how lean and toned her arms are. Mrs. O has a shapely figure, so she must be a designer's dream! I like the fact that she sticks to what works for her. She has beautiful skin also. I wonder what her daily beauty regimen is?

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 2:10 PM | Unregistered CommenterBea

I love that cover!!!! I love the dress she looks so youthful on that cover. I'm on your side JoJo for FLOTUS to have another child, I think in two years they should get started.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 2:15 PM | Unregistered CommenterMarilyne

Hey guys, if you want to read a piece on the relationship between Mrs. O and Ikram Goldman that isn't paranoid and catty like that awful NYT article, the Chicago Tribune published a really great one yesterday. It is brimming with really interesting info on Ikram and her store, and how she paired with Mrs. O.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/lifestyle/chi-0225-ikram-and-michelle-obamfeb25,0,3480493.story

Ikram is, by the way, a very supportive friend! During the campaign, she even sent out e-mails to her customers urging then to support Barack Obama. So these are two women that really support each other and go way back. It makes perfect, perfect sense that Michelle is sticking with Ikram now that she's First Lady.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 2:21 PM | Unregistered CommenterJenna

Though Michelle certainly LOOKS quite young, I do think she is past the stage where she would be having more children. Unless she is with child at this very second, I don't think they will be growing their family in that way.

And I remember her saying on the Ellen Show that they did not plan to have more kids.

I am looking forward to seeing this issue. Hopefully, I will have it by tomorrow night. I hate it when my People Magazine is delivered late. She looks pretty.

The color, the hair and the smile are just fabulous.
Ms. O looks amazing on this cover.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 2:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterNoShock

Was that photo shot exclusivly for People ? Is it recent ?
Great dress - I love Tracy Reese.
I think the pink color of the fabric would have looked alot better if not posed against that yellow sofa...

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 3:29 PM | Unregistered CommenterRJT

i love that color on her, and the hair is super cute. i agree that with edwina that this cover looks so much more relaxed and radiant than the vogue one does. mrs. o is a fabulous and sexy woman, but i hate to say that this look is almost a little too sexy (i know it's not entirely fair to expect her to hide her sex appeal just because she's first lady but still i dunno), perhaps it's the lack of lining on the straps. either way she still looks pretty darn fabulous, and i can't wait to pick up this issue. i also can't wait to see what she wears tonight for the stevie wonder tribute event.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 4:01 PM | Unregistered Commentermoja31

I love Michelle, but this look doesn't do much for me. The dress looks too much like lingerie. The color is great and she does look great--it's just the dress I don't care for.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 4:24 PM | Unregistered Commentersusan

It was announced today that Mrs. O will serve as honorary chairwoman of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which begins next month. Should provide for some wonderful photo ops for our First Lady! Can't wait to see what she does, and how great she'll look doing it.

Love that color.

a few weeks ago, I said this, now I'll say it again - what is her deal with wearing sleeveless all the time...in the dead of winter? I love her, don't get me wrong. NYT just noticed it this week too: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/25/michelle-obama-goes-sleeveless-again/?scp=1&sq=michell%20obama%20sleeveless&st=cse

There are a ton of pictures of Malia and Sasha on the Obama Pics Daily website (I'm going to give the link, though I know it will send this comment to moderation.)

I don't point them out to talk about the girls (though they are extremely adorable) but to note how Mrs. O style has evolved in really just a very few short years. When you see pics of her with the kids when they were little, or even with Barack when he was being sworn in as senator, it's very different from the woman we see now.

A vision in pink. I love her her style. She's just amazing.

If we're going to avoid commenting on the Obamas' daughters in these posts, could we also please resist the urge to speculate on the possibility of another Obama child. That just seems a little too personal! Let's stick to fashion and the first couple's wonderful impact on us all!

she looks sexy and classy on that cover.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 5:42 PM | Unregistered Commentermenukjau

yayyyy, im glad she has finally worn Tracy Reese, I have been rooting for Ms. Reese since pre-inauguration!!

ps: while I know Mrs. O's hair is just pulled back, and she did not get a hair cut, this looks has just convinced me that she would look GREAT with a pixie cut, and will take about 10 years off her age, she looks fabulous in this shot

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 6:15 PM | Unregistered CommenterLayo G

Michelle and Barak look so tired in that photo where he is pushing the stroller! (@Christina).

Michelle looks so much more svelte, young and sophisticated now than she did then.

Its hard to do glamour when you are toilet training toddlers and dealing with tantrums, sleepless nights etc.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 6:16 PM | Unregistered Commenterveronica

Veronica, what picture is that?

Heads up, people. Michelle and her husband are hosting Stevie Wonder tonight and it will be shown on CSPAN starting at 7:45 pm. I can't wait to see what she'll wear!!

I love this pink dress- fun and flirty. She really enjoys fashion and seems so comfortable in her own skin.

Check out TalkingShopping's huge piece on all the fun doggy duds the Obamas could get for the First Pup! Hilarious! That dog is one lucky pup! And Portuguese Water dogs are awesome!

Our first lady looks absolutely lovely and so in tune as always...

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that Mrs O is one of the hottest women in the world, who still wonders what everyone has been raving about, who still questions Mrs O's power to impact fashion then her cover for People magazine is your answer.

Mrs O looks flawless and spectacular in this hot magenta lace dress with its deep v neck.
Another bold and rich tone, which she wears with great ease bring out her inner glamour.
This dress fits her perfectly ,achieving a classy and respectable look. Resting at the knees, showing off her long legs and killer shoes. This dress is a showstopper!

I would like to applaud Tracy Reese for achieving this look on Mrs O, she manages to bring the right amount of high voltage sex appeal to this garment.
Thank you Mrs Obama for bringing Tracey Reese to the forefront of fashion history.

Christina, thanks for that link! It's amazing to see how the family and Michelle has changed over the years!

Mrs. O really used to wear her hair with much more volume, which I think might be sort of dated (if she wore it that way now) but actually, in a few of the last shots, when she wore it in a sort of halo around her head, I really like the effect. I think it framed her face really well. I am thinking of the hair in the picture with the gold suits and the one where she wears a pink t-shirt. So I am sooooo glad to see Mrs. O venturing towards updo styles, as she has like 3 times in just the last week.

I do really like her usual hair, but I've really wanted some variety. She looks great in a RANGE of styles beyond that very polished bob her hair stylist has perfected. I don't want her to be like Anna Wintour who basically just has a hair helmet!

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 6:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterJenna

HOT PINK LACE! I love that dress, so fresh, a real POW of color and style.

Thanks Christina for the link. I think that Mrs. O's eyebrows were much thinner (too thin) back then - and were too archy, if such a thing is possible. And she is using more depth of eye makeup now, that really makes her eyes pop better. Actually for old photos she looks darn good, mine would not be nearly as flattering!!

And I love Malia's little dreadlocks in one of the photos. Those girls are totally "daddy's girls" - they just look at him so adoringly. (and hey, he was pretty hot in the swimsuit too but who's looking???)

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 7:25 PM | Unregistered Commenterallison

Some people don't quite know how to take Michelle. The First Ladies in recent memory have all been more buttoned up and reserved- and older- at least when it comes to fashion.

Who knew a sleeveless outfit could be so controversial. I like that she's modern and not confined by convention in her fashion choices.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 7:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterVeronica

OH, and the teeth!! They are so beautiful and white. Her smile is such an asset.

She puts you at ease just gazing at you from that yellow couch. I just want to start chatting.

As soon as I saw the sleeveless dress I was reminded of Jacqueline Kennedy wearing something similar to her husband's State of the Union Address which always takes place in the winter: http://pro.corbis.com/search/Enlargement.aspx?CID=isg&mediauid={61BCCF17-14BF-4950-8DA2-24D6870BC2AC}

Oh, here's a color version of the 1963 photo of Jackie Kennedy also wearing a sleeveless dress to Congress in the winter: http://pro.corbis.com/search/Enlargement.aspx?CID=isg&mediauid={25A7E78E-D7BC-4C30-970C-A5812B7C0601} The part in the brackets is part of the url, too, the brackets are cutting off the hyperlink.

I think (at least I hope) the First Lady has finally hit her stride as far as fashion goes. She seems to be evolving into a sexy but classy icon but one who also has --intellectually speaking--the depth and breathe of an accomplished woman.

TS, CNN was livestreaming the opening and then they went dark because it's a PBS special. It doesn't air until tomorrow night! Maybe there will be some stills of her somewhere.....

She's wearing a lovely green cocktail dress and she looks so different because of how her hair is styled.
