A Vision in Gold

Images by REUTERS/Scanpix Norway and Daniel Sannum Lauten/Getty Images
At the Royal Castle in Oslo, Norway, just before the president will accept the Nobel Peace Prize, the first lady is an absolute vision in gold. Mrs. O paired her vibrant chartreuse dress and coat with a soft yellow cardigan by Nina Ricci. The same cardigan was also worn for the inauguration.
Update: Mrs. O wears a Calvin Klein Collection dress and coat. The sulfite laser cut velvet dress and jacket are from the Fall 2009 Calvin Klein Collection designed by Francisco Costa, the Women's Creative Director.

So lovely! That's quite a stand out choice of color. She is a ray of golden light. Also, there are photo's of her signing a guest book in Olso today and she was wearing a completely different black/ gray outfit with beautiful draping and a pin at the neckline. She looked so modern and regal. You can see the photo's here and here .
Wow, beautiful....Today in Oslo reminds me of Mrs O Inauguration attire......love the coat that was replaced by a cardigan once inside the hall.I'm wondering if this ia an Isabel Toledo. Oh ant the President was on point in his speech.
I love them......
Congratulations to PRESIDENT OBAMA ON HIS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
I don't care for this outfit. It looks too traditionally first lady. Barbara Bush, Laura Bush could have worn this same outfit.
I like this outfit. She's celebrating her husbond and the Nobel peace price.
Sensory overload !!!!!!!!!
What can I say ? Striking choice of colour for a striking ocassion. I love the frock, cardi and acrouments, nice. I love the updo hairstyle. I would love for her to milk this style from full fat to powdered form. It shows off her beauty and cheekbones.
By the way, I've seen those shoes on a few previous occassions. No one can accuse Michelle of not caring for the planet, she recycles more than I do. Love the woman.
I'm not so sure about this outfit. The color's too much, or something. Definitely not one of my favorites.
The black dress with the draped neckline she wore at the sign-in ceremony was fantastic. And the small pin was just the right touch.
She's on such a roll this month.
POTUS gave an amazing speech. He brought tears to my eyes. The US should be so full of pride at this moment.
Absolutely magnificent ceremony, start to finish. Certainly one of PBO's best speeches. Mrs. O looked stunning at each event. I'm just really, really always struck not only by her gorgeous wardrobe but her flawless skin and makeup. There will be more events later. BRAVO!
my opinion is it was a poor choice - totally outshines her husband and is really LOUD - way too overstated....and what is what the shoes...all the shoes she chooses SOOO don't match the great choices she makes on the the clothes...the tiny heel is SO out of date...and makes her (obviously) large feet look even larger...she should have done some shoe shopping in europe!
Not sure this is the best look for her. The color, the sheen, the brocade pattern--it's just a bit too much. But still--she's interesting.
for some reason I like the dress and cardigan, but not the matching coat. also, I am really not into the permanent up do she's been sporting lately - She always looks great, but she looks so much prettier with her hair down. Mrs. O, please bring back the youthful, flowing hair!
Mrs. O is like an actress in a Bollywood film: multiple outfit changes in a short period, all becoming.
This was a beautiful ensemble. I think it is chartreuse more than yellow. I love it
Traveling outfit #1--black with red scarf--lovely. Traveling outfit #2--lilac/periwinkle coat, black gloves--fabulous. Signing ceremony dress-draped charcoal grey--exquisite. Then, this gold upholstered getup with cardigan. She's three for four in my opinion.
By the way, congratulations to Mr President. We are all discussing his speech at work at the moment. The man is a great orator, the best I've ever heard in my lifetime.
Does anyone have a link to a livestream to the banquet or parade? I'm enjoying every bit and don't want to miss anything.
very mrs. o .....love it! CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT BARRACK OBAMA...
I agree with Nancy. Mrs O is three for four. Her traveling outfits and the lovely dress worn at the signing ceremony were all great. But the gold dress (especially when worn with the cardigan with the sleeves pushed up) was neither becoming nor appropriate to the occasion
I agree the color is a bit too loud and she upstages her husband, the honoree.. The gray draped outfit is a stunner!!
I miss her with her hair down. I can't help but think that some adviser suggested that she wear her hair up. Then again, FLOTUS doesn't seem to do what she doesn't want to.
To me, the lighting is not doing this ensemble justice. There are other colors that are interwoven and play into this fabric, for example, in the last picture, you can see it a little better. It's not totally gold. To me she looks great. I happen to like the sheath dress look with matching coat...it's a chic, classic standard in my book. Very appropriate for the occassion. Hey, it's burr-r-r-r cold there in Oslo. Colder than Chicago. By the way, it doesn't get that cold in D.C., in comparison, which she's become acclumated to that temp. I know, I used to live there. Also, I would really like to see a close-up of her necklace.
I love how our Michelle mixes fabrics, textures and colors to pull an outfit together. Some of the pictures have this dress looking more shinier than others, I guess it's the flashes as well as the lighting. I like the brocade ensemble and granted, chartreuse is not an easy color to wear, but she hits it square on the bullseye. Her hair and makeup is flawless as usual. This one works for me.
I'll have to join the naysayers on this one. My first impression of just the dress was that it looked like gold Christmas wrapping paper. Then next we get hit with the coat and it's just way too SHOWY and, in this instance,IMO not appropriate for the occassion.
I always love Mrs. O style. This is the first time when I am so-so on her fashion selection. I love the pairing of the dress and cardigan. She looks regal. Breathtaking. However, the coat is too much. For some reason it reminds me of my great-grandmother's curtains. Maybe if the gold was a littled muted or toned down a bit. But otherwise she is still my style icon :))
LOVE HER DRESS NOT FEELING HER SWEATER BUT IT MATCHING HER EARRINGS. LOVE HER GOLD SHOES SHE WEAR THEM BEFORE. HER JACKET IS NICE SHE WEAR IT WITH A SRUFE. AM GLAD SHE DIDNT WEAR A BELT. HER HAIR SHUOLD BE DROWN ITS LOOOKED BETTER WHEN SHE HAVE IT DROWN.
The outfit is absolutely stunning, and it is the coat/scarf combination that does it. She is quite a beauty, and often chooses the exact skirt length to show off her gams. Lovely.
Hmmm. Interesting? Maybe the gold works a lot better in person and just doesn't photograph well. But I agree that she's upstaging her husband a little with all that shine, and not shine in a good way.
That draped dress from the signing or whatever is stunning though!
From the Island of JAMAICA to the world, I watched the event live this morning.
Oh so beautiful, I cried at the end of the speech.
I pray for God's guidance for the Obamas.
What a beautiful couple?
Here we go again with the inappropriate comments. I guess Queen Sonja was also inappropriate in This red suit.
Watch this thread starts getting ugly with people you will never catch in other threads such as the Kennedy center thread. Watch them take this opportunity to bash Mrs. O and claim how totally unfit she is for the position and how they are so embarrassed because she chose to wear gold. (roll eyes!)
My take on this ensemble. I really like it with the coat OFF - the coat is a bit too much for me, but then again I would never wear an all red suit - even an all beige suit is too much for me- that just shows how boring my tastes are, not that a person wearing them doesn't look good. I will agree with the poster above who said it was a bit too first lady - like. It's not anywhere near as stylish as that FANTASTIC gray dress pictured in the thread below.
As far as upstaging the president, guess what! she doesn't need to wear a gold outfit to do it, she does it simply by being there (sorry Mr. president)! She is THAT dynamic. So come with again with another talking point.
Mrs. T for some reason none of my post are showing up.
But I'm gonna try again.
I love this gold ensemble. What I love about FLOTUS is she knows how to dress for the occasion. The Nobel prize is all about gold, and I love how she weaves her attire into the themes of her events.
Can't wait to see tonight's gown!
Zile, you said that perfectly and I wholeheatedly agree with you. I love the look minus the coat but I initially refrained from posting negativity and highlighted eveything else that I loved - shoes, dress, cardi, jewellry. To each their own, I love the look.
I was just going through some photos on Yahoo and we can see Will Smith with his young daughter, Willow, just beaming with pride. Also Wyclef Jean and I think Spike Lee is there as well supporting and watching this historical occassion. There's also a picture of FLOTUS looking on tenderly and proud, holding back tears as the audience is applauding her husband. It's a really a touching moment that the world gets to see. My cup runneth over with pride!
Hmm not feeling this outfit. I agree with. Nancy 3 for 4.
The First Lady did NOT upstage her husband. She has never done that and will never do that. They are true partners and complement each other beautifully. From what I've read, Norwegians are just as taken with FLOTUS as they are with her husband and deservingly so. This is not an ensemble I would wear, but I was not blessed with her grace and stature. If anyone could pull it off, it would be her and I believe she did.
I would like to congratulate President Obama on his Nobel Prize and his brilliant and moving speech.
I got up early to see it even though I TiVoed it, and just like I did with the Cairo speech, I'll no doubt watch it over and over again.
I am so proud, so so proud, of this couple. Sometimes just seeing these photos of them brings tears to my eyes.
I hate what the extremists (right AND left!) in this country are doing to this President. He's barely been in office 11 months and already the left is declaring him a failure because they all haven't gotten their ponies. "I want my pony now!" "I want it pink and no other color!" The right lost their collective minds the day he won and their campaign to smear, swiftboat and delegitimize him has been unceasing.
I remain proud and will continue to support him and his lovely wife.
I feel the color is too Loud. either the coat or the dress should have been of a different material...too shiny for me..the second pic does not look good.
The gray draped dress is absolutely stunning in my opinion. I hope we see it again.
The gold dress with matching coat is not a favorite for me. I'm sure she chose it with care--and if she is happy with it, it's ok. I wouldn't choose to wear something that shiny in the daytime, but I'm no fashion expert.
I like her hair up. It's a nice change and looks quite elegant.
Charlene in Detroit do you have a link to those photos.
I am with those who are thumbs down on the gold outfit. It is flashy rather than rich-looking, and what's with the cardigan?
I think the outfit looks a lot better without the coat, i particularly love the way the outfit looks in this pic

very mrs. o .....love it! CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT BARRACK OBAMA...
WOW! I think this is first time that I didn't like something MRS O has worn. The Black Dress is Stunning but the gold outfit is a little too LOUD. Also, I like the sweaters but I think a jacket is more appropriate for great occasion like this. :(
Don't like this one. Too "First Lady over age 60", IMHO. It reminds me of her inaugural outfit, which I did not care for. The color, the shape, and the cardigan is a total "three strikes you're out" situation to me. I liked the black dress but not this ensemble.
For all those who missed Mrs.O being chosen as the #1 most fascinating person on Barbra Walters 10 most fascinating list here is the video.
Marabout, I totally agree with you. Kitten heels are what some shoe deigners says is the look that suits ALL women. I'm also at a loss for the mean spirited unfair crticism of our Michelle. There have been some outfits in the past that she's worn that I was not overjoyed about, but there is a way of critiquing an outfit.
If some believe that Mrs. O is upstaging her husband, they are taking fashion way too seriously. To those of us in the know, we understand that her satorial choices speak to the occasion and to us. "Beacon of light" jumped from my lips the moment I saw her. What do you think she is saying with this outfit?
This is my first contribution.
I am a bit daltonian. So usually I don't quite agree with people on colours. For example, before I got to mrs-o website, I would swear, and I still would, that FLOTUS is wearing a shinning green ensemble. ...
I do not see any gold here.
I believe style is much more important than fashion. And this is it: MRS O has style. That dress would be unbearable on anybody else. But she just looks stunning. The whole character.
Upstaging the President? The day he met her, I think he fell for that. That woman is so much more than him. At the state dinner, sincerely the President was not glamour enough for her!!!! He did not have the prestance to keep up with her. She will never be in his shadows as for fashion and style. He is the follower here. Politics is his business. but still she tries not to. the kitten heels? With them, if she is standing straight straight, she is taller than the president sligthly. Imagine high heels...
I am from the Carribean. I like colors. I love it when she is bright and shinny. That black-gray dress everybody finds marvelous? Looks like a drape. But i supposed she has to give in to western tastes at times..
Mrs O is wonderful!
Sorry, this outfit is to loud with color and even though it's a bold choice it's seems a bit over the top. I do love her hair in this photo though.
@ marabout40 - don't even bother trying with these types of critics. This Nobel dustup has really shown me that there are people who are just plain jealous of the Obamas. I can understand the discussion and debate about whether now was the right time. But the "controversy" that has erupted is sourced from a very jealous and petty place. That is the same place people who are talking about kitten heels being out of style - that's one of the most clueless things I've read on here in a while - and big feet, or upstaging Mr. O, or whatever else, are coming from.
This is a proud couple, happy in this accomplishment, and happy with each other. I think this outfit was nice enough, not my favorite. I really love the black draped dress in the previous thread. I can't imagine that her outfit is that important to her on a day like this though. This is all about her husband. Gotta love her doting after him in this video:

This one is a miss, in my opinion. The color's garish and it seems very 80s. Sorry Michelle, you're usually right on target but every fashionista has a bad choice once in a while. The gray dress the day before was amazing.
IMHO, the cardigan "dumbs" the outfit down. Also, I'm just not "feeling" the gold color.
The gray (grey) dress (with brooch) is elegant. Mrs. Obama looks VERY good in gray.
OMG I want to tear my eyes out!!! That gold coat is absolutely horrendous! My first thought was that someone went to sombody's grandmama's house, pulled the plastic cover off her "good" sofa and thought, "I'm gonna make a coat for Mrs. Obama out of this crappy 1960's couch! She's gonna LUVVV it!! And I'm recycling to boot!!" LMAO to keep from crying.
