Lovely Ruffles

Image by Tim Sloan / Getty Images

First Lady Mrs. O is in Alexandria, VA today visiting the vegetable garden of a Virginia elementary school. Per the AP, Mrs. O handed out bananas and tangerines during the school's lunch hour, while receiving a few gardening tips from students - all part of Mrs. O's ongoing efforts to promote healthy eating and exercise.

On the style front, we can hardly believe our eyes! Mrs. O is wearing a ruffled, olive green blouse from J.Crew. Fitting with operafanatic's new thread on O.Chat, "I Own the Same Thing", we have the same blouse in the same color - and in fact, wore it to J.Crew when interviewing Creative Director Jenna Lyons for the Mrs. O book.

The color looks great on her.

I love this picture of her: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/slideshow/ALeqM5hcwBG4cE8LWpWfiIvlLfqs7NebbgD9C247GO1?index=4

She's so young and vibrant and seems so happy. It pains me deeply to see and hear the vitriol and downright wickedness being spewed from the rightwing and fundies in this country against this lovely family. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/11/18/805516/-Trawling-for-assassins:-Evangelical-nuts-want-Obama-dead-UPDATED:-CAFEPRESS-DROPS-MERCHANDISE

May God bless them and keep them safe.

FLOTUS also hosted a WH event for women in the military this afternoon. There are pics up on Getty. She looks lovely in lavender. No belt! http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/93196970/Getty-Images-News

The color and fabric of the blouse is stunning. This will be a sure sellout. I love the pairing of the cardigan with the blouse. Those colors are great together.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 4:47 PM | Registered CommenterBevi

I thought there was some kind of pattern on the blouse, but it is the very large front fastener (?) on her very wide black belt, worn over the blue cardigan. Can't figure out just what it is - shells? Spans the entire front of the olive blouse, but appears to be two pieces with a hook in the center? Perhaps Mrs. T will have a clue.

i hope the bickering over her belts is over.the last 2 or 3 threads really reflect poorly on this community. and Mrs.T is was kind of u for stepping in although it didn't bring much.

HER RUFFLED GREEN BLOUSE - is so appropriate for visiting a vegetable
garden at a school.
I dont know if Mrs. O picked this blouse for her invent today, but it ads a
greeeeeeeeen touch of freshness for the occasion. Go My Lady.

I love this blouse. This is the closest thing I could find on the Jcrew webiste, I got it in white. I am a sucker for a crisp white blouse.

Really like the entire ensemble. Any information on the pants and jacket? http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/slideshow/ALeqM5hcwBG4cE8LWpWfiIvlLfqs7NebbgD9C247GO1?index=2

Marabout40, It's ironic what you mentioned above - I was just getting ready
to check this site and thought to myself, theyre not going to be in the white house
forever, so the naysayers dont need to get too excited.
I am loving this change, the same way this change came about - this is the moment,
this is the time in history, I'M JUST GOING TO LOVE EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF IT,
and it's strengthening power on all aspects of society. The rest is "history". I, personally
believe - there's a reason for everything. Look at the combination - so perfect.
If we give the world our best it's never enough. Give the best anyway.
WIN SOME LOOSE SOME BABY!

Wow! A very hard color to wear but Mrs. O looks smashing. The ruffles are cool.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 5:49 PM | Unregistered Commenterjulieda14

I love the olive green blouse, it goes really well with the brown ensemble. Another salute for the First Lady.

I hear you, Marabout40. The more I think about what she does, the less time I have for haters. There is no way you can hate all the good that Michelle is doing in her new role. I have stumbled on a few sites and been HORRIFIED by some of the downright filth and vitriol. SECONDS after a article is presented on the Obama's, the venomous remarks start. I mean don't they work, don't they have families ??? These people have way too much time on their hands. They need to get a hobby or give back to the community. Maybe they wouldn't have time to be petty and nasty if they got themselves a life.

Until then, I will continue to pour praise and recognition on Michelle because whilst her clothes are always a visual feast she's doing something good to make this world a better place and we need more people like her around.

Mrs. O looks great today, especially in the ruffled blouse from J. Crew. I'm still amazed how the First Lady can make J. Crew pieces look couture.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 6:33 PM | Registered CommenterStrong Foru

Great look! I want to see more of the belt. It looks very interesting.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 6:39 PM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

This is the first time I've ever been able to say "I have that!" about something the First Lady is wearing! I have this blouse in a narrow black and white stripe. Mine is cotton but hers looks more lustrous -- like silk maybe? I got mine at a J. Crew outlet, where I would be HAPPY to take Mrs. Obama any time she wants to go!

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 7:12 PM | Unregistered Commenterwes

Honestly if I where J Crew I would hire an official Mrs O watcher and then I would tag the things Mrs O wears so that they are search able at the JCrew website...quite frankly I hope Michelle has J Crew stock!

Very fashion forward color combo. And I like the pixie cut ont he lady next to her.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 7:18 PM | Unregistered Commenterjenh

My tongue gets twisted when I try to describe my delight with this outfit...so I'll say it in Spanglish....wow, que caliente! A mi, I like it something severe!

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 7:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterPizzaz

This is a very relaxed look with an unexpected color combo that works. I have to admit, you'd never know that the blouse is off the rack. It's refreshing how our Michelle debunks the notion that to be fashionable you have to wear only high end clothes. It seems that her taste in clothes rubbed off the lady sitting next to her. She's wearing J.Crew's Merino Watercolor Cardigan #20304 $88.00. I don't blame her, I probably would've done the same thing...let our FLOTUS know how her fashion sense has influenced me.

Is there ANY color this woman cannot wear? I have yet to see it. This blouse (which I'm sure looked great on Mrs. T also!) is a real stunner, especially with the teal sweater. The belt is quite interesting. On Huffington Post there is a close up which looks like it closes with something separate - though I could not see both sides. Anyone remember sweater guards? That's what it looks like.

@ ThatOtherMimi: I did buy J.Crew stock about 6 months ago - not a lot, but it's kind of fun to watch! They have to be delerious about this exposure in such a tough market.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 9:43 PM | Registered Commenteroperafanatic

Operafanatic,

I was just thinking exactly the same thing about her color range!!! It's amazes me, especially considering my very limited palette. I also have yet to see a single color that looks bad on her. We should all be so fortunate!

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 11:07 PM | Registered CommenterMsG

My first lady is PERFECTION indeed!! So breathtakingly lovely!!
So true Charlene in Detroit, I actually own this J. Crew silk blouse in a navy and Mrs Obama makes this rather inexpensive piece look so lovely.
I absolutely concur Nyon!

Love the Victoria cami in that color. Too gorgeous. Also, it looks like the woman next to her is wearing the J Crew Watercolor Leopard Cardigan.

Love the color combination and the ruffles frame her face very nicely.

She looks great!

Just received the J. Crew catalog today, and there are some items in it that would look totally fabulous on Mrs. O., in addition to the wonderful blouse she is wearing here. There is a beautiful silk jacket composed of tiers of ruffles and a heavenly dark blue silk skirt with a great-looking waistband and side-tied bow. Wish I could wear that skirt!

Friday, November 20, 2009 at 4:05 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

I have this blouse. I actually got it from Jessica London. How wonderful that FLOTUS would have a blouse that a plus size woman can wear too. She is absolutely gorgeous.

Michelle Obama visiting a vegetable garden....handing out bananas, and tangerines. What has our country come to? Sad.

Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 11:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterAlyse

That color isn't *hard* to wear, you just need to be one of the people who can wear it. Mrs. O is one of those people. (I'm not.)

Go back to that book about colors you can wear if you're a "spring," "summer," "fall," or "winter." She's a winter. (I'm a fall.)

If I wore that color, I'd go home sick by noon, because everyone would be asking me if I feel OK.

However, Mrs. O looks *smashing* in it!

I am glad she toned it down with the sweater.

I could wear that color in pants, but not in a blouse and now I know what color to wear up top if I buy a pair of pants in that color. :)

I haven't seen Mrs. O in anything yet that I didn't like on her!

Are you being sarcastic? If not, what is sad about handing out fruit?

I am a Sales Associate at the J.Crew in Pentagon City and the teacher to the right of Mrs. Obama came into our store the day before the event to buy a new outfit! I picked out her outfit; she wore chocolate driving mocs, our amazing minnie pants, a simple knit and that watercolor cardigan!!! Very cool to see this picture!

@SB, that's an amazing story! How wonderful that both your customer and the first lady were both in J.Crew!
