Mrs. O Greets the Girl Scouts

P102909PS-0762

Official White House Photo by Pete Souza

Thanks Nyon, for directing us to this new photo of the President and First Lady, taken Thursday, October 29. Pictured with the first couple is MacKenzie Clare and other Girl Scouts, who were invited to the White House as President O signed the Girl Scouts USA Centennial Commemorative Coin Act.

For the occasion Mrs. O was dressed in a medley of blue and green, pairing a cobalt blue sheath dress with a jade green cardigan. A Moschino brooch accessorized the look.

Reader Comments (38)

The blue and green is a nice nod to colors of the Girl Scout uniforms. And that is one of my favorite brooches of hers, as opposed to the scary man-eating brooch.

Christina, this is one of my favorite brooches too! Moschino actually sent me four of them (the same grouping as worn during the DNC) that are photographed in the Mrs. O book. The detail up close is gorgeous!

Nice colors, but she's not lookin' too good here- I hope it is just the angle of the photo....

I'm thinking some posters will again be saying that she looks pregnant, she needs spanx, she got chubby, etc... But I know that, while I am pretty slim, sometimes I just get so bloated and my belly protrudes - like after a flight, or some days of the month, or after a day spent sitting and not moving much... Could it be that the same happens to the First Lady?

You're right, Mrs T. The detail on the Moschino brooches are fantastic. I noticed that in your book. I love the way Michelle recycles her clothes, aren't those her inauguration shoes ?

Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 6:42 PM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

jestina - they are the inauguration shoes. Good catch! They match perfectly with the cardigan. I also agree with Christina, the colors are a nice nod to the Girl Scouts. I feel like reciting the old pledge right about now!

why do some of u people feel the need to dissect the first lady body like that.the belt makes her looks pregnant,oh her tummy isn't flat enough.it will be laughable if it weren't so pathetic.you guys act as though the woman doesn't own a mirror.you praise her cuz she doesn't look like someone who puts too much thought on her posture before getting photographed but you criticize her cuz the picture does not hide what u consider to be her flaws.it comes off as though u are projecting ur insecurities onto her.she looks like a normal woman who is mother of two.noone get rid of this after giving birth no matter what hollywood people want u to believe.you guy should make up ur minds: either you want her to be the person she has always been or you want her to be whatever you have in mind.if it is the latter you will be dissapointed cuz she had never been anybody but herself.someone even goes to far as to suggest that people will use the way she dresses against her husband. i hate when people project their insecurities onto other people.if women where like michelle obama who is very comfortable in her skin, there wouldn't be so many coat hanger on the catwalk.i happy that she is knocking down all those stereotypes.
sorry for the venting.
i love the two colours together.i wouldn't have come to the idea by myself.once again the first lady shows me how to be daring.as for the brooch i can't really see it.can someone provides a better picture of it?

greetings from germany.

@chrystelle

Your post is the most brilliant post that I have ever read on here. Anway, new pics of FLOTUS on getty. Also, I agree "women" say, yay she looks like an average woman, but then say hell no if she is not stick thin. I get so sick on the BS, one poster in the Glamour magazine thread had the nerve to mention " I am happy she returned back to her weight that she had pre-summer." What the heck, women want to not be judged on their bodies, but have the nerve to tell a 45 year old woman she needs to do more than her daily workout. Thank God that she is not concerned with being a size 2!! Keep wearing your fitted dresses FLOTUS!

In some cultures having a little tummy like Mrs. O's is sexy. And from what I can tell, her husband likes her body just fine.

Anyway, I've long felt that some people who comment on here complaining about Mrs. O's body or what she should or shouldn't wear are projecting their own issues onto her, and revealing their own insecurities rather than pointing out anything wrong with Mrs. O.

Love her "sort of" Halloween costume. She's so playful. Here's another nice picture of her and her bangles which I am coveting right now. http://www.daylife.com/photo/06a250MeAp6TV?q=michelle+obama

Thank you, Chrystelle, for saying what I have been thinking for some time. I never enjoy the postings that criticize in the manner you describe. Hostility and insecurity never seem to result in grace and good manners, do they? What ever happened to not voicing every thought? Just because there is cyberspace between us shouldn't mean that we have license to speak without courtesy and respect. Would I blurt out that kind of thing out to her (or anyone else for that matter) if I were to meet this exceptional woman face to face? Would any of you? If not, then why do it behind her cyber-back?

and you are right IVA.. i think those who find silly things to comment about her or probaly not happy with their bodies or have a poor body image of themselves.. maybe MRS O confidence and committment to exercise, working hard, and playing hard.. will motivate them.. She is an educated hardworking lady not a MODEL.. she is not modeling clothes.... or is she a store manniquin(sp)

Mrs T,
I suggest that before you allow a comment to be posted on this site, please check it for content. Those who choose to disparage and malaciously criticize Mrs. O, please do not post their unwelcomed commentaries, enough is enough!!! This site is to celebrate Mrs O, not denigrate her.

Mrs O dresses very appropriately and her outfits are always befitting of a classy woman like herself. She has repeatedly stated that she dresses first and foremost to please herself, and POTUS definitely enjoys the view. So anyone opposed to anything Mrs O chooses to wear, should exit and never return to this site. Since you are frequently, if not always, so upset and disappointed with Mrs O's choices of clothing and accessories, stay away from this site and quit torturing yourself.

Mrs O looks absolutely lovely in this outfit as she always does!!!

She is obviously standing in an awkward position. This picture was taken very close in time to the garden pictures where she looks quite trim. Didn't give her much time to bloat. It's really weird how some people keep making such silly comments and now, I, too, have succumbed to silly comments as well.

The caption on one of her Halloween pictures on Yahoo designates her "costume" as cat woman. Lots of ways to take that. But she truly looks great. And they both seem to be having a great time--grandma, too.

I'm waiting for Mrs. O' s catwoman Halloween costume! :)

Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 9:46 PM | Unregistered Commentersd

Apparently the Cat Woman came from the president as quoted in The Caucus when commenting on the costumes there:

“They’re adorable,” Mr. Obama said, “as is, by the way, my wife — a very nice-looking Cat Woman.”

Here we go again. Sheryl. That whole issue was hashed out on yesterday's blogging. I had hoped that people had come to a consensus that this is a fashion commentary, and that means both positive and negative comments about FASHION are allowed and encouraged. That's the fun of it! However, I feel strongly that we need to refrain from comments on Mrs. Obamas figure, as Chrystelle so eloquently wrote above.
P.S. I love Michelle's mother. She always looks cute.

i just want to stress that my comment isn't intended to stifle criticism as long as it is about fashion but it is when it strays far from the topic that i get irate.i hate when people get picked on because of their body whether men or women.my 15 years old daughter nearly died of anorexia. So the topic is very close to me.

i love mrs O cat-woman costum.her boots + skinny jeans + leopard printed cardigan twins-set are fierce.hard to believe she is 45. i also adore Dr Rice outfit she will be playfully get teased by her UN colleagues when she gets back to work.can someone please telll me about Desirée Rogers dress-up?

I like the blue and green pairing. It's not something that I would've done for myself, but maybe I'll give it a try. I love her sheath dresses which inspired me to buy two from Spiegel. They really looked nice on me so I bought a pattern at Joanne's fabric. This way I can have the seamstress custom the necklines, arm lengths, and even hemlines to suit me. If I choose, I can add belts, brooches, cardigans, bold necklaces or whatever. That's one of the ways that our Michelle has inspired me...none of us have to be cookie-cutter, we can make fashion uniquely our own.

@ Sheryl, I moderate the blog the best I can. But if there's a comment that bothers you, please just shoot me a note at contact@mrs-o.org. Thanks! Mary T.

I agree Charlene. Michelle really makes GREAT use of colour. One of the desginers said the same thing in the Mrs O book - she mixes and blends in ways that I wouldn't dream of but I am learning, thanks to the First Lady.

So now when I see a cut price item of clothing in the sale or when I see a pair of shoes that I wouldn't normally go for, I buy it anway rather than miss out on a bargain. I bring it home and I guarantee that I will find something to pair it with.

Michelle is inspiring.

Sheryl, Mrs. T. moderates this blog, not you. She has never said that conflicting opinions are not allowed. I recall that you have made similar statements before in an effort to stifle open dialog, and it made me wonder how on earth you can function in life when you cannot tolerate differences of opinion. I agree that there is no need to comment on Mrs. O.'s body...it's just too personal. However, I do feel that commenting on fashion, which is what this blog is all about, is an entirely different matter.

Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 3:41 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Mrs. O admitted that she was in the best shape before her husband ran for office. She was almost too thin. How can Mrs. O not have put on all that weight with the White House chef available 24/7? She looks great at any weight, no matter what the blogger say.

I hope there's a baby personally. It would be such a fun addition to the White House family.

Dress is great...but the cardigan really detracts.

Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 1:43 PM | Unregistered Commenterkbarch

Hellooo, in the quibbling over Mrs. O's figure, we are overlooking something many of have longed for...no belt!!! Michelle could so easily have popped one of her wide black belts over her unbuttoned cardigan, but instead, with no distraction, our eyes are free to enjoy the interplay between her green sweater and shoes and blue dress and brooch! I like it! Thanks, Mrs O!

This blue sheath dress looks very familiar, does anyone know when she last wore it?

Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 4:08 PM | Unregistered Commenterae

@ae, I believe it may be this Michael Kors dress. http://mrs-o.org/newdata/2009/7/27/business-chic.html

The color looks like a match, though it's hard to say for sure without seeing the full neckline.

Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 4:28 PM | Registered CommenterMrs. T

The neckline looks to be higher in the Girl Scout shot than in the Kors dress but it looks familiar to me a well.

Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 4:48 PM | Registered CommenterAsereht

@Mrs T. and Asereht thanks, I agree it hard to tell without the neck line, but this dress is a repeat worth seeing.

Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 9:42 PM | Unregistered Commenterae

I agree with Columbia. The outfit is great. The fact that there is NO belt just makes it that much better.
