DVF and Thakoon Make Short List

Though surely Mrs. O's dress for the Inaugural Ball will remain a secret until its debut, we can at least begin to pull together an informed short list. Per NY Mag, both Diane von Furstenberg and Thakoon have submitted designs. Though Thakoon didn't exactly confirm, we can read between the lines with great delight.
Last night at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award dinner Diane Von Furstenberg told us she has submitted sketches for Michelle Obama's inaugural ball gown. "Well, they asked me to. Of course, everybody has," she said. Thakoon Panichgul, one of Michelle's favorite designers, tried to remain elusive when we asked if he'd submitted sketches. "Um … we'll see what happens," he said with a devilish smirk.
What other designers should make the list? We'd love to hear your thoughts. Also to note, a few budding designers have contacted us to share their designs for Mrs. O. Notably Tonya Tate, who's begun a one woman campaign to dress the future First Lady. We're certain Mrs. O would be touched to know she's inspiring such creative expression. For those budding designers out there - we'd love you to link to your designs in our comments section. On a final DVF note, CNN has just debuted a new program "Revealed: Diane von Furstenberg", which goes behind the scenes of DVF's New York City office to see what it takes to put on a fashion show in Florence - the designer's first in Europe. The segment premiered last night, but future airdates can be found here. For a sneak peek:

Wow DVF has been contacted - that is so cool.
Thakoon too...
How about Vera Wang ?
Of course it would be nirvana if she wore a one-off by Marc Jacobs...has he even been asked ?
I can see a long lean shimmery Donna Karen column gown also, maybe w/ one shoulder ?
HOW ABOUT MARCHESA ?! YESSSSSSSSS.
Based on Mrs. O's track record, I have to think Maria Pinto, Narciso Rodriguez, Peter Soronen and Oscar de la Renta will also be in the mix. (It's been said that Mrs. O's not an "Oscar de la Renta kind of gal", but that's not the case. More to follow in a post later this week.) A J.Crew Collection frock by Jenna Lyons would be a coup d'etat for high-low fashion. We've also heard Monique Lhuillier mentioned. And then there's Kai Milla, Stevie Wonder's designer wife, who expressed interest in designing for Mrs. O earlier this week. And that's just who we think may be in the running. Our wishful thinking to follow...
what about Tracey Reese?
there was a rumor not too long ago that Mrs. O had tapped African American designer Cassandra Bromfield to design her inaugural gown.

I don't care whose gown she wears, she will look FABULOUS in whatever it is....I love her and her family....what a great day for our country....a breath of fresh air.
The MULLEVY sisters of RODARTE. The future of American fashion.

Let's just hope it is not anything from Thakoon. I checked his site and looked at what he is showing for Fall and into the spring and it is all dark, depressing, ordinary, not innovative and not even flattering. Yes, we are in a financial pit these days, but let the return of the Democrats be a cause for celebration and happier looking clothes.
The suit in pear green is a great color, but once again has a wierd and unflattering neckline just like the one Mrs. O wore to visit the White House recently. How about some elegant classic designs? Most of the time Mrs. O, unfortunately, looks like she is wearing the designer leftovers from Loehman's or Filene's Basement. The intentions are good, but something always goes awry.
Since Maria Pinto has done her well thus far, I can't imagine that she is not on the list
I have read a couple of Oscar De La Renta mentions, while he is a great classic designer, I like the fact that Mrs O is branching out to younger, more modern designers, and again, making a break through as to what is acceptable fore first ladies. ODLR is so Laura Bush, and I would hate to see Mrs. O go in his direction (again, he's a great designer, but let's leave him for the Laura Bushes of this world.)
Thakoon has also done her well. No matter who she goes with, it will be fabulous because im just loving her style!
