The President and First Lady picked up dinner at Nancy's Restaurant in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, while vacationing on Martha's Vineyard this weekend. For the outing, Mrs. O paired a black tank with a pleated color block skirt. Hoop earrings and black sandals completed the weekend casual look.

The First Lady greeted the President as he exited Marine One at the White House this afternoon. Arriving back in Washington, the President had a treat for Mrs. O -- a pair of new garden gloves picked up at Fred's Pro Hardware in Toledo, Ohio. On a fashion note, some may recognize Mrs. O's Suno tunic from Summer 2009 here.

It was a busy day for the First Lady, as Mrs. O also delivered the commencement address at Quantico Middle and High School on the Quantico Marine Base in Quantico, Virginia. For the event, Mrs. O wore a sleeveless navy dress, adorned with fabric rosettes. Cute!

Two Weeks in Review

Hi Friends! Thank you for all of the wonderful comments, and for being so understanding of my absence from the blog during my wedding and honeymoon. Many of you have been kindly posting links in the comments to Mrs. O's various appearances, but I thought we could all use a quick catch up of the first lady's recent events in addition. Mrs. O debuted a few fabulous summer skirts below, which I'll work to identify this week.

Hope everyone (in the U.S.) had a great July 4th holiday. While the wedding and honeymoon were quite magical, it's good to be back!

July 3: The President and First Lady Mrs. O returned from Camp David, where they spent part of the July 4th weekend. Mrs. O paired a fabulous green print skirt, featuring oversize stud trim, with a white tank, metallic flats and gold accessories. Her lime green tote added a final punch of color.

July 4: On July 4th, Mrs. O wore a fittingly patriotic ensemble, pairing a red, white and blue wrap halter top with white cropped pants and ballet flats.

July 6: Mrs. O met with Mrs. Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in the Yellow Oval Room of the White House. I believe the dress is the same Narciso Rodriguez tulip patterned frock that Mrs. O wore on the campaign trail in 2008, also seen on the cover of the Mandi Norwood book "Michelle Style" here.

July 7: The first lady appeared at an event at the Treasury building, where Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner spoke at the economy and 2008 financial crisis. For the event, Mrs. O paired a white top and cropped cardigan with a fabulous metallic floral skirt. A thin silver belt at the waist and magenta heels completed the look.

Two looks from Suno Fall 2009

W Magazine nabbed a quick interview with screenwriter turned fashion designer Max Osterweis of Suno. He talks about the genesis of his line and reveals further details about the Suno tunic that wound up in Mrs. O's closet. Fans of Suno will be delighted to know that Mrs. O has bought at least 5 pieces from the designer, so we should expect more to come. Click here to read the piece.

(As many will recall, Mrs. O wore a Suno tunic when visiting San Francisco earlier this summer. The line was inspired by textiles the designer has collected through his travels to Kenya. Click here for our earlier coverage.)

A Closer Look at SUNO

When Mrs. O traveled to San Francisco a few weeks ago we got several inquiries about her heart print tunic, but not until later did we discover the designer (via a Mrs-O.org tipster via New York magazine, thank you!). The top is from a new label called SUNO, formed in 2008 by Max Osterweis, a film director and screenwriter turned designer.

The inspiration for the collection came after Mr. Osterweis spent more than a decade collecting textiles from Kenya, where his mother had built a house on Lamu Island. (The collection is named after her.) Wanting to do something positive for Kenya after the country found itself in political turmoil in 2008, Max decided to put his collection of fabrics to new use.

He started SUNO -- a company that employs local Kenyan talent and is committed to treating workers fairly. The overarching aim is to affect positive and lasting economic and social change.

Design for the SUNO collection originates in New York City, where sample and pattern makers construct the first pieces for the collection. The patterns and samples are then sent to Kenya, where the garments are produced in small artisan workshops. The first SUNO collection for Spring/Summer 2009 consisted of 1,000 individually numbered, one of a kind pieces made from Kenya kangas. (Kangas are large rectangles of printed cotton that come from coastal East African tradition.) The pieces are then finished with touches of silk charmeuse, used for piping, binding, pockets and collars.

Mrs. O's top is a cotton tunic by SUNO, made at a small fair-trade workshop in Kenya from a vintage kanga. The top was purchased from Ikram in Chicago. With such a substantive background and lovely, interesting pieces, we are not suprised that SUNO has found its way into Mrs. O's wardrobe. Fingers crossed there is more to come!
