Marching Forward in Style

The first lady visited the battleground states of Iowa and Wisconsin yesterday, making stops at the University of Northern Iowa and Lawrence University in Wisconsin. For the appearances, Mrs. O turned to a fitted forest green jacket, paired with a striped tee and black full-leg trousers. A Miriam Haskell necklace completed the look.
Hope everyone is having a great start to the weekend!

Love that look on her face. It captivates me more than the clothes (which are awesome in their own right, naturally). I <3 Mrs. O!
How could you not say yes to this woman? Energy, style, smarts, charm! I am so proud she's our FLOTUS!
Looks like her Iowa speech. At the one in Appleton, WI she had the jacket off. Its been awhile since she's worn pants for an appearance, I think it's a good choice.
She looks Fired up and Ready to GO!!!!
Lovely fall look, very energetic and elegant. Amazing how such a simple style can looks sooooo good.
As a graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, I am especially proud that my alma mater was host to Michelle Obama. She looks and is fierce, focused and fabulous!!
This is a cute photo of Mrs. O but those pants are not flattering at all! They are must too wide and seem a little tight.
OMG so unflattering. Maybe it is just the angle of the photo but the pants make her look very bottom heavy.
I was there! A majority of the audience were UNI students and she really connected with them. Such a warm and gracious woman.
I'm not a fan of wide leg pants but I am loving the jacket and jewelry. The first lady looks cute.
"We're marching to Zion (White House)!" Love FLOTUS in this outfit and whenever she wears wide leg pants. A collegiate/campaigning look for sure. Adore the pearl accentuated necklace--gives me design ideas! Would love to see her at my alma mater--UDM in Detroit! I'd even stand in line again and remember the days of registration long ago-smile!
I think she looks fabulous!!!
Well, her purposeful, confident, determined stride across the stage overshadows any fashion flaws in this photo.....Obama 2012
She looks cute to me in this outfit but it is the "fired" up look on her face and her pose in this picture which brought the smile to my face. She is adorable!!!.
She looks so confdent, poise, positive...I am able to overlook any fashion mis-steps in this photo. Obama 2012
LOL! There is absolutely nothing unflattering about the beautiful ensemble Mrs. O is wearing. Maybe it's just the angle of trollism because someone isn't pleased with the way they look.
My guess is soccernanna was addressing me. I am 52 years old 5'7" and 125 pounds. I am hardly someone who is unhappy with myself, also I am not a "troll" I am just giving my opinion that I think the pants are unflattering. I also gave the bebefit of doubt that it may be a bad camera angle. Stop the childish name calling when someone offers an opinion you don't like.
This is such a super photo! The placards in the background say it all! Her expression and stride are right on point! As for the fashionality of it, perfection again. Pants are considered "ready to work" and wide-legged fluid pants suggest femininity. The jacket, again, is "professionalism" while the striped tee is feminine and playful. The dark palette suggests somberness and serious intent. You go, FLOTUS! *sigh*
I just really love this outfit as an all day--straight into the evening--outfit.
@KitCat: How did you get "tight" out of that photo?
@All: The observations on this blog offer a wonderful exercise in art criticism and really sharpen one's powers of perception. Thanks to all of you for helping me "see" better.
Methinks the First Lady relishes the opportunity to have the microphone. I would caption this photo "Don't mind if I do."
@Emptynester - agree with you 100%
@ Emptynester,
You gave your "opinion" and I gave mine.
The "childishness" comes in when you become defensive when you're rightly called out on what your post was actually trying to do.
"OMG so unflattering. Maybe it is just the angle of the photo but the pants make her look very bottom heavy."
I think this is an unflattering photo or unflattering fit of pant for my favorite first lady. Well can't win 'em all. The jacket and top are cute at least.
The jacket and top have a flattering fit but I agree with other posts that the pants in this pic are not flattering. Would like to see the jacket and top paired with something else.
@Soccernana,
Ok, I think I am finally figuring out this comment section. OMG can only be used before complimenting an outfit, and I can only be critical as long as I profess my love for the Obama's. Got it. Thanks for setting me straight.
It looks as if our Michelle is marching to her own beat, and happy to boot! I just love the look of enthusiasm on her face, it seems genuine and infectious.
If I were a betting girl, my money would be on that sharply tailored jacket. That could punch up or dress down several outfits. I likey!
@ Emptynester,
Your sarcasm = epic fail
Nice try though.
LOL- I'll give you the last word SoccerNana, I've had my fun :)
LMAO @ SoccerNana!! Lady, you are too funny!!!
@ Nyon :0)
Those pants are indeed very unflattering. I agree with you, EmptyNester!
Geez why do some people get so defensive? So someone thinks the pants are unflattering, well they are ! That is not a personal attack on the first lady. Mrs O is a women of great personal style. I would say 98% of what she wears is a perfect. However, I don't see anything wrong with people giving their opinions on what they view as mistakes.
I think she looks great; the pants are flattering. And she IS bottom heavy. In some cultures, this is a good thing. Glad she's accentuating her assets instead of trying to hide them.
Isn't she looking sooo Elegant.
@ Emptynester, this one's for you:
