Must Read Mrs. O

As many have noticed, August has been a quiet month on the blog, which correlates directly with a brief slowdown in the First Lady's schedule. Hopefully it's been a nice respite for Mrs. O, as surely the next several months will be busy. While we wait for things to pick up, here are two recent articles that may be of interest:

Duchess Catherine, Michelle Obama Wield Style Power for Good [USA Today]

Adele's Secret Weapon [Vogue UK] (Look for the quote about Mrs. O from the lovely Barbara Tfank)

Thanks for the links, Mrs. T.

I think the Duchess of Cambridge's penchant for tan-coloured tights provokes a similar reaction to Mrs. O's use of belts. Now, while I don't always think that the belts universally flatter Mrs. O, I appreciate that the tights are part of Catherine's royal uniform (perhaps she agreed to the tights while rejecting gloves, that other former staple of royal dressing).

Walking through London a few weeks ago I was struck by the influence of Mrs. O on so many of the outfits I saw. I think Jestina made a similar observation months ago. Anyway, it still rings true!

I don't understand the negative reaction from fashionistas to the tights or the belt or gloves for that matter. Tights--or pantyhose as we call them in Canada--protect the feet from blisters, smooth out the leg, hide unsightly knees somewhat, pull in a tummy not quite under control on its own, add warmth and eliminate the need for underpants. What's not to love?

Belts--while MO doesn't always get it to my taste--accent a waist and pull together an outfit. A great belt can be worn for years and can be great value for the money, if it's expensive.

Gloves, too, are a fabulous accessory, both warm and a barrier between the hand and germs. Whatever the reaction of people might be to the film The Help, there is nothing--I repeat nothing--as lovely as the sound of gloved applause. It has an elegance all its own: listen for it.

It's about time they all came back into favour and kept their place in the fashion arsenal.

Philly, I had never thought of the elegance of gloved applause, but I will now! Thank you.
