Regal Ralph Lauren

Photo by Charles Dharapak / AP Images

This evening the President and First Lady are hosting a dinner for Queen Elizabeth at the Winfield House, where the U.S. ambassador to the U.K. lives. For the occasion, Mrs. O has chosen an off-the-shoulder black gown by Ralph Lauren paired with absolutely knock-out jewelry by Tom Binns and a jade and diamond lattice ring by Yewn. Stunning!

The gown originates from the Ralph Lauren Fall 2011 collection, seen here. (Thanks BeeGee!)

Let me put it this way, I'm just recovering from the fainting spell after I first saw the photos.

Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 11:25 PM | Registered Commenterlittlered

Love the gown and the jewlery and finally a nice sleek "up do" that's more flattering to her face.

Love the part in the hair.

I too have my hair parted right now with a curly up do :o)

We black girls bringin' "the part" back.....I love it :o)

Posh Tater-you mentioned that flotus needed more lip color to offset the all black gown.

When u have as much makeup on as flotus does with foundation, blush, smokey eyes, false lashes, the LAST thing u need is a lot of lipcolor.

Add that to your look and u start to look clownish, esp. on a black woman.

Trust me :o)

FLOTUS did it right.

Wow Wow Wow Wow

@ Chauny - I completely agree. It's either major eyes or major lips. Not both at the same time.

Does anyone else think the President looks like he can't quite believe he got a date with this woman? It's like the president of the chess club got to go to the prom with the homecoming queen. Very sweet interaction between them.

I've noticed people are still having problems with posts appearing twice, probably because of the spam filter thing that requires you to type in a series of letters. I discovered recently that if you type the letters without the spaces in between, you don't get another notice to type in another series. Give it a try next time.

BTW, anybody else having fun checking out the Duke of Edinburgh checking out Mrs. O on this trip? I’ve never seen him look so…um…delighted.

In this one looks like even POTUS is keeping an eye on him! LOL!

I have looked at this site many many times throughout the few years. This is my first time commenting. All I can say is Mrs Obama looks absolutely amazing in this black gown! Love the hair makeup and very sexy gown. I REALLY love this look. Sexy and classy at the same time.

I think this hairstyle is also one Mrs. Obama should wear more often. It makes her look young and sexy. She reeally hit it out of the park with this one!

@ Drwinona - thanks for the link to the Tom Binns necklace. I'd not seen this tangled look before. It's a bit much for me.

Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 12:43 AM | Registered CommenterHeatherT

Like the bracelet; love the dress (see how much nicer you look when you're NOT trying to relocate your waistline?). But the necklace overstays its welcome: did it accidentally fall in a garbage disposal?

Mrs. Obama is wearing Tom Binns jewelry! I love Tom Binns!!

American/Gothic. Alluring is the all black and slight train. Deeply Romantic.

What are your top three state dinner gowns? Mine are: 1. Rachel Roy (India). 2. Ralph Lauren (UK). 3. Alexander McQueen (China)...

Simplement MAGNIFIQUE!!!!!

Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 5:01 AM | Unregistered CommenterJen

I love the skirt on the Ralph Lauren dress. I like the fabric on the top part, but the neckline is too low. The cleavage is unattractive and distracting. The necklace is a tangled mess. Just because this type of big, statement jewelry is trendy, does not make it the right thing to wear. It looks like a send-up of the royal jewels.

Chic, elegant , eat, simple .
Beuatifull jewelry especially in that finger.
But i would prefer them in a real diamond stone , emerald and saphir.
Ms Obama, you looks very beautifull tonight with your husband by your side.

I love this dress and I love the insouciance of the necklace. I think she has been spot on this whole trip (save one of the meetings with the PM and SamCam where she was wearing a black dress that was a bit more "cocktail" and SamCam was wearing something more "barbeque").

I think Mrs O has worked hard having her clothes mirror the occassion and she has been very respectul towards the Queen by dressing as she has. The mint dress may not have been my fave but it worked (it was a cousin to what the Queen herself wore which is a strong message of unity) and I thought the pink bolero sent the message you can be respectful to your hostess and still maintain yourself and your style. This whole trip has been a series of messages through fashion and I think it has been very successful.

The difference between the white dress for the State Dinner and the black one for the dinner at the Embassy is fantastic - one for being the guest and the other for being the hostess. Both worked for the event.

I must defend a bit SamCam's outfits. I think she is trying to be a good hostess and allow her guest to shine, I don't think she wants to get into a fashion face-off in the papers. There was too much in the UK papers with Carla Bruni and the Spanish Crown Princess (mostly shown from the rear) and I think SamCam wants to avoid that and I think that is very gracious of her. I have a lot of respect for SamCam's sense of style - she created the Nancy bag which, in my opinion, is a near perfect iconic bag.

Mine are 1. Naeem Khan(India) 2. Tom Ford(UK) 3 Ralph Lauren and Alexander McQueen(UK & China).
She is so exquisite. I'm abit apprehensive about heavy necklaces but her gown being plain,a simpler necklace wouldn't hae worked. This (Tom Binns )masterpiece is just right!!!

Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 6:49 AM | Registered CommenterJoss

Oh wow Mrs O looks splendid and queenly. President O also looks like he has hit the jackpot! Lol.
The black gown with its two textures is amazing on her. And the necklace, while not that pretty by itself, somehow is a great choice with the gown. The ring is adding the final flourish to this memorable look.

Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 7:16 AM | Unregistered CommenterDevika

@ ladywatcher - I can concur. As a Brit, the Queen takes her role very seriously. There are times when I'm sure she'd prefer to stay in and watch telly rather than host or attend state dinners. AGAIN, you are right. As the direct heir, the Queen has sent Prince Charles to represent her on many occassions.

I can honestly, say that the Queen looks like she is enjoying herself and enjoying the Obama's. I can't remember the last time I saw so many smiles from the Royal family when greeting foreign dignataries. I believe she and Michelle have a true bond. Kinda makes me love my Queen even more. Oftentimes, she is so misunderstood but I honestly feel that her heart is in the right place.

Regardless, of what you may read about in the press, over here in the UK, we have mad love and admiration for the Obama's.

I've been following Mrs. O for some time, and love everything she wears. But I've never felt inclined to post until this recent European tour. Every choice is perfection. I didn't think anything could beat that beautiful white gown, until I see this! Exquisite! Way to go Mrs. O!

On the Tom Binns jewelry:

The president’s wife showed off a selection of costume jewellery including a Tom Binns cuff and necklace.

A similar necklace sells on his website for £1,500.

Truly ... no words. I'm trying to find a word. Nope, still can't find one. Now, I'm looking through my old Funk & Wagnalls Standard Desk Dictionary for an appropriate word ...wait for it....okay, I've found it: STUNNER "a person of extraordinary beauty."

Best. Dress. EVER: A slimming silhouette, simple lines, subtle textures, and best of all, a natural waistline. However, while I think the bracelet works, the neckpiece looks like silverware pulled from a kitchen sink garbage disposer.

Off the charts hot! Her hair reminds me of Princess Diana. I recall a few times she also tried out this slick back look. The dress fits like a glove....those who did not care for the jewelry, I wonder if a close up would have made the difference...I think it actually add some quirkiness to the whole look.

DYNAMITE. Gorgeous

Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 2:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterMaureen in Jamaica

All I can say is WOW! This is what curves and confidence will do for a dress. I did not bother to look at the model because even if I could afford a dress like this I would have to mentally imagine myself and not the so called professional models strutting on the runway. You have to have confidence in yourself to know that you can wear and put together the accessories to look like this. Our Michelle is wearing this to perfection.
President Obama's smile says it all. They compliment each other very well and it is so refreshing to see a President and First Lady who appreciates being with each other. This is what LOVE looks like. I am so proud of them and surely happy for them. Keep them in your prayers, folks.

Happy to see only one comment on cleavage. Interesting observation this morning on C-Span. This morning's moderator is wearing a glamorous outfit that mirrors this gown. Black, identical amount of cleavage but covered shoulders. Very attractive.

This has got to be one of her best fashion trips yet, every outfit just was as amazing if not better than the day/night before. The neck line on this is so flattering on her. It shows her beautiful structure in suck a tasteful way. This has got to be one of my favorite. She looks marvelous, stunning, fabulous, amazing!
