Going to New Lengths

Photos by Cliff Owen / AP Images
Mrs. O turned to a brick red graphic print top and slim long skirt (belted at the waist, of course!) to address Operation Homefront in Arlington, VA last evening. Though we don't have a full-length photo, it's interesting to see that Mrs. O is embracing the longer hemlines that are in vogue at the moment. Curious to know whether Mrs. O went midi or full-length?
The First Lady was on hand for the "2011 Military Child of the Year" award ceremony. For background, Operation Homefront is a national non-profit organization that assists military families and honors five outstanding military children each year.

Her makeup is always so fabulous. I think she is wearing false eyelashes.
intersting choice of attire for this occassion.
She looks much older with her hair up in this style.
Her smile lights up the room
@babs Mrs O definately has fake eyelashes and tinted eyebrows (i should get some myself :-) It must be her make artist, cuz she had a natural look during the campaign.
I love this outfit, decent for the FLOTUS. no shouting clours or asymmetrical designs- good.
Makeup...(i faint)....Wow!
Absolutely lovely...what expressive eyes! The eyes are the mirror to the soul and her eyes truly tell us she is sincere and caring. God bless Mrs. Obama, God bless the First family and God bless America. Mrs. T, thanks for this beautiful post.
Love the long skirt (my personal preferred length)!
love the look!! at first, i thought the title referred to her hair cut, not the skirt length! does it like quite a bit shorter than she normally keeps it? and tapered so low in the back... nice for summer!
Michelle O has lost some weight but still insists on wearing her garments too tight. The rust skirt is a prime example. Once again she isn't dressed appropriately for the occcasion. The bare arms is getting really old and the belt, well been there, done that.
That organization probably does good work, but something in me recoils from the term "Military Child."
Wow, Mrs. O, great silhouette!
Could this be the same brick pencil skirt she wore with the striped Marc by Marc Jacobs top and shiny black jacket - boarding Marine One on way to Brazil and again at Sidwell School - and for the dinner out where she was snapped with the hockey player?
I believe it could be this skirt:

Is Mrs. O's eyebrows penciled on? They appear to be very overplucked. Just wondering. Otherwise very nice.
Did Mrs. O get her hair cut?,or is it just pulled back into a French twist type style?
That skirt appears to be very stretchy so it may not be too tight, just clingy. I can't wait to try a
summertime long skirt. Why did we all give those away 10 years ago?

I don't believe I have ever loved Mrs. O's makeup more than I love it in this picture! She looks so stunning and absoloutely beautiful!
Susan S, I would be interested to know specifically why you feel the bare arms are getting really old and exactly what you think she should have worn for this occasion and why. thanks
Her eyes look beautiful. I don't know whether she has a new make up stylist or if the change is all down to her but the first lady looks gorgeous. I love the skirt and the wide belt, personally for me and me alone I'm not quite feeling the vest top (is it a vest top?) although I have no problem with her bare arms. She works hard to look that good and keep healthy so she has every right to show off her hard work. Anyway, it hardly matters, overall she looks sensational and as always she is out working hard for the good of America. I keep saying it but the next First Lady of America is going to have to step in some very large shoes.
I agree that our Michelle looks healthy and she not only talks the talk, she walks the walk. Her healthy lifestyle is not something that she adopted just for "a worthy cause", it's something that she lives by and it shows. Someone had mentioned that this might be the skirt that she wore with the striped Marc Jacobs top and I think they might be right. I like the longer skirt length sprinkled in a warfdrobe and here is one example when it works. I've seen that ikat print top somewhere, but cannot put my finger on it.
She's one stylish First Lady!
If there's a double post, I'm sorry.
Is it possible that she (or her stylist) thought that that shade of brown would contrast well with the khaki of the military uniforms?
Maybe it's a dress worn with a belt? I love these colors on her.
@BeeGee, I believe you may be right...it does look like the same skirt.
I like dress because the colors are good for her. The boob belt is not the way to go, imo. It thickens her middle and emphasizes that she lacks a waist. However, the dress has dignity.
I wonder why she doesn't wax her hairline fuzz. It is quite distracting and in one place nearly reaches her eyebrows. It's certainly not a "look" and she hasn't hesitated to dramatically change her brows, so why is the forehead fuzz still there?
Right now, the elongated head created by her new hair do seems transitional -- I've been there myself! It's better than the Sharpton comb-back or the hair nub and better than many of the one-eye-hidden falls. So I'll be curious to see where she is head in terms of her hair.
I like this shade of lipstick on Mr.O. The nude or light pink shades she's been using a lot these days are not as flattering; especially with the darker colored lipliner. It looks kind of 70's or something.
I don't understand why she continues to wear the belt so high. It does nothing for her. I do love the longer length in her skirt a lot, though. The rust color of the outfit looks very good with her complexion too.
That Neferttiti (spl?) like hair is not a good look for her. She should go back to the styles where the hair falls softly around her face..
I mean this in the most respectful way...but I think the top she is wearing make her chest look too flat (combined with the stretching skirt) is it somehow, may be the pattern or the cut, looks very casual to me. I am sure the fabric is formal but I think it just doesn't look like it matches the skirt and the whole thing make her proportions look not matching...this is of course based on just this one photo.
Bare arms, like bare legs with a short skirt, or a decollatage that is too low are, in my mind, inappropriate for business attire. The events that Mrs. O attends are business, in a way.
When everyone else in the room, (especially men), are all covered up, wouldn't you feel that you stood out in an uncomfortable way, with bare arms and showing so much skin?
I would prefer that she left the bare arms for evening attire and casual warm-weather attire.
Is there ANY color Mrs. O cannot wear beautifully??!
Actually, I am way tired of the sleeveless look on Mrs. O not because I think it is inappropriate, but because going to no sleeves repeatedly rules out so many other nice shoulder - and thus neckline - styles that would look great on her. She looks fantastic in 3/4 and 1/2 sleeves because she has such nice hand carriage, and V necklines are stunning on her. But as she says, she has to wear the dress.
Mrs. Obama looks absolutely terrific. I really love her profile and the perfect hairstyle!
Mrs.O looks great! I especially love the earrings and the bracelet and her makeup is flawless! Not to mention she has the most beautiful skin.
I'm going through a Mrs. O fashion withdrawal! Where is she? I've been spoiled by the South America trip and these two outfits have not been enough to hold me over!! LOL
kels, we are >>>><<<<.
I felt spoilt a few weeks ago when the Obama's were in South America. I think the First Lady is taking a mini break which is richly deserved for all the hard work she does. I believe the President, Vice President, First & Second Lady will be getting together today at 12pm - honouring service personnel so that should be fun.
OMG, she has on an AMAZING coral skirt suit! She looks freakin' fierce. The suit is not stuffy at all, it's very young and modern in its cut.
She looks gorgeous!!
