Mrs. O is Going on Vacation

The White House has announced that the First Lady and her daughter Sasha will travel to Spain for four days next week. The trip is a private holiday, but will include a visit with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. Fun! For further details, click here.

P.S.: We should prepare for a very quiet month in August. Per Lynn Sweet of Politics Daily, "Mrs. Obama plans no official business for the month of August."

In addition to the mother-daughter trip to Spain, the first lady will join her family for an August 14 weekend getaway to the Florida Gulf Coast, followed by an extended stay on Martha's Vineyard from August 19-29.

Please feel free to share thoughts on what you might like to see here while Mrs. O is away!

What a wonderful time you will have with your daughter in
Spain....Did that trip with one of my daughters...No King Carlos on the agenda but what a wonderful bonding experience in a beautiful country...We had so much fun laughing, talking and just enjoying all the friendly people and the Spanish culture. Have taken these kind of trips one at a time with all my children and each has been really special. Glad, as always, your role as Mom comes first...Keep up the good job you are doing as our First Lady. You are an inspiration.

It might be a fashion face off if she gets to meet Princess Letizia, who is quite the fashion plate!

I hope The First Lady and Sasha have a wonderful time in Spain. Malia will be away at summer camp, hope she have a wonderful time also.

VIVA España!

Well, with Spain still basking in the euphoria of their World Cup win, this trip could not have come at a better time. I am almost certain that meeting La Roja – The Red, as Spain's team is known will be on Mrs.O's to do list. How exciting indeed! I am definitely looking forward to some bold colourful fashion.

Salud!

DARN! I got all excited!!-I am going to Spain next week also with my daughter, to meet up with my other daughter who has spent the summer in Barcelona. For a fleeting moment my hopes were up that maybe Michelle would also be visiting Barcelona...sigh...

This is totally making up for Sasha not going away to summer camp like Malia.

I do't know, but If I was Malia, I think I would be a tad upset because I would rather go to Spain over summer camp, but that's just me, LOL ;-)

The one thing I always love about living in London and the one thing I would regret if I ever immigrated is my close proximity to Europe. I'm always amazed at the fact that within a hour or two max, I can be in a different country, experiencing different culture, language, tradition, food and history. Then travel up the road (literally !!) to find yourself in another country with a whole different experience again. On top of that, you have the culture, language, food and traditions that can differ from one part of the country to another.

Little Sasha will have the time of her life and I hope her parents will continue to travel extensively after the Presidents two terms are up.

I would love to see Fall fashion trends in August while Mrs. O is away--clothes, shoes, accesories! And maybe a mix of designer and retail, like J. Crew and Talbots.

While Mrs. Obama is away...I don't know about anyone else, but I would like to see some of your wedding/reception photos! Especially of you in your gown...like the still shots taken by the photographer after you donned your wedding gown, complete with something old/new/borrowed/blue! Also, any beautiful landscape or ocean views photos of you and your hubby taken on your honeymoon!

Thank you...look forward to seeing them!

It would be great to have some fall Mrs. O inspired outfits (like Juju recommended). Especially some at price points for those of us outside of the White House. It would be great to show how to wear things a few ways like Mrs. O does so well.

Hi! I think that is wonderful mommy and daughter time. Lovely that they will be in Spain. I would love to see ideas on Fall fashions for overworked and underpaid teachers. Simplistic but loads of bang ideas to accesorize. Shoes, shoes, shoes that are comfortable, stylish, and also sexy ones too.

How about other fashion figures of the world? Like Queen Rania of Jordan? We can get educated on them while we wait for Mrs. O to come back.

I agree with Mrs. M. I'd like to see your wedding pics!

Would like to see Spain pictures once they there. Jestina: He has one term so far...lol ;)

Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 2:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterNatasha

Wow ladies, these are some wonderful ideas. I would also like to see some style.com fashion shows featuring some of our Michelle's favorite designers. We could do like we did last year in picking out which pieces we would hope to see her in.

@ Jestina, what you've described is the one aspect that fascinates me the the most about England. I'm only 10 minutes from The Canadian Windsor border, Canada is fascinating enough but not an entirely different culture. The close proximity to another country is something that one of my High School teachers used to wax nostalgically about. He said he missed that most of all and always encouraged his students to travel abroad. So to you guys across the pond, I'm jealous!

Jestina-

I agree, they should travel their hearts out, because once his second term is done its back to "normal" life. However, Malia will be going to college then

Mrs. T, I too would like to see something on fall fashion trends while Mrs. O is enjoying her well-deserved break.

Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 10:31 PM | Registered CommenterMsG

Wonderful travel opportunities for Mrs.O. and the girls. They will love Spain.

Maybe Malia wanted to hang out with different kids of her age group. Camp can be a very fun and educational experience with persons who live outside the White House bubble.

I liked all the suggestions offered to Mrs. T. while Mrs. O. is away, particularly the suggestion of seeing a few wedding photos if we will not be imposing on Mrs. T's privacy.

Friday, July 30, 2010 at 12:14 PM | Unregistered Commentermarcelle

Wow! their lives are such a dream! While they are away enjoying it would be nice to find some tips on how to copy Mrs. O´s style, her outfits are always so neat and well put together!

Love the idea of looking at other political fashionistas as well. (as Kiietti suggested). Hope I don't make any ememies here, but there is probably a reason we have not seen pictures of Mrs. T's wedding. My opinion is that is kind of personal...for friends and family.

Friday, July 30, 2010 at 2:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterJuju

I am thrilled that the O girls get to have some fun vaca time. I watched Sir Paul McCartney on PBS which was a broadcast of his June event at the white house. Michelle was awesome in her dress but the daughters were so cute as well. After Sir Paul sang the song, Michelle Ma Belle, the camera caught Sasha mouthing the song Michelle Ma Belle after sir Paul went on to another song. So cute! Also I would love to see mrs. T. pics but I also agree some things should be private! It was cool seeing her dress, though!

Friday, July 30, 2010 at 6:23 PM | Unregistered CommenterSusan

I agree with Juju and Barb. Also Charlene, I am as green as you are of our friends who live in Europe!

Friday, July 30, 2010 at 6:53 PM | Unregistered CommenterSusan

I would love to hear about her skin care. What does it take to know that piece of information?

I also think we shouldn't ask to see wedding pictures. If Mrs. T wanted us to see them she would have shared them by now.

How about a compilation of Mrs Obama's outfits in groups of color: one day do the Pink Collection, another day the Yellow Collection, and so on?

Ladies, here's a nice way to make the FLOTUS smile, just as she has made us smile almost daily. She wants ANYONE and EVERYONE to sign an Internet birthday card for him (he will turn 49 on 8/4). Here's the link!

@Juju. Comment re wedding photos...no offence taken...it's definitely up to the person's discretion.

Re Mrs. Obama...there's nothing that can compare to mother, daughter time at that age! Also, ditto on getting a peek at fall fashion trends!

Ok, so here is some video of a very tender moment between the Obamas. I kinda feel bad for seeing it and the creepy cameraman doesn't make it any better, but I couldn't resist having an 'awwww" moment after seeing it. Also, for you fashionistas, I think Mrs. O is wearing a dress we have not seen, but I'm not sure. If you look through the slide show, you will see a clear picture of the dress.

Nyon,
My thanks as well for the link. The dress she is wearing is familiar to me as well but I can't remember the specific occasion. The trip to Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon is tugging at my memory for some reason, but for the life of me, I'm not sure where I saw it...only that I did.

Loved the tender moment between the two of them that was captured. I think they know that that outside of the private quarters of the White house, they are always "on" and there are no private moments for them, but it did have the feel of a stolen moment that was inadvertently captured. Either way, it shows a brief glimpse into what I believe to be a true couple in love and for that reason above all, I loved it!

This is a pic of Mrs. O arriving in Arizona (August 2009), and I believe she is wearing the same dress captured in the link that Nyon posted....if not, just blame it on my old eyes!

Thanks for the link, Nyon. I agree it is a very private picture but it is also very touching to see the President kiss his wife so tenderly. Honestly, it almost brought tears to my eyes. I guess that is what makes the Obama's so fresh, so relevant, so interesting and so loveable. I never tire of seeing them together or the intimate displays of love that they project.

I'm an incurable romantic. I always prayed to God (still do !) to send me a good man. I'm 42 now, probably missed my chance at having a Sasha or Malia but I still live in hope that he'll send me someone one day and if he is a fraction of the man that the President is, then the waiting would have all been worth it.

Love all of the ideas! Definitely will do my best to follow up on many of these suggestions, as they're great!

I did catch one photo of Mrs. O from Friday night, wearing the Merona for Target dress, here:
http://www.daylife.com/photo/07oxaJP5X3aYO?q=michelle+obama

In terms of my wedding photos, I don't plan to post them to the blog, but I'm happy to share a link to my photographer's blog, where several will be posted in 2-3 weeks.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Fall fashions would be great. Also, maybe some coverage of men's fashions for fall that the President could wear.

You're welcome Ladies!!! It definitely is a guilty pleasure ;-)

Good memory Asereht. And I figured the same thing that the Pres just didn't care because he knows the pool follow his every move.

Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 3:14 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

@ Asereht - I agree. The President was just being spontaneous. At the very moment, he thought, " I don't care if the world is looking at me, I don't care if this is headline news tomorrow, I want to kiss my wife and I'm gonna kiss her, so there, I did it !!"

I love The Obama's.

Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 4:58 PM | Unregistered CommenterJestina (England)

A) I think that's the H&M dress, no? Nice to see it again.

B) There is nothing wrong with videotaping or photographing President Obama & Mrs O in my opinion, after all that's how we get some of the off-hours vacation shots and we don't mind getting those, do we?

What makes that particular video weird was the cameraman's weirdo commentary. Totally no need for that. I'm surprised the AP slapped their logo on it (I assume an amateur sent the video in). They should have killed the audio before releasing it or something lol.

Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 9:47 PM | Registered CommenterMiss Mica

@ Miss Mica, the dress is Target. Mrs. O wore it last year, and a reader recognized it from her own closet. I then confirmed with a representative from Target.

Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 10:13 PM | Registered CommenterMrs. T

The video is very sweet and really demonstrates one of the things I love about our First Family. I have to disagree, however, that there's "nothing wrong" with shooting and posting such scenes. There are things that are illegal, things that are immoral, and things that are just creepy and distasteful. Obviously this photographer was NOT guilty of the first two, but I'd say definitely guilty of the third--especially the disgusting audio!! But another thing I love about the Obamas is that they seem to have learned to take such things in stride, and they understand that this goes with the life they signed up for. And it's pretty darned sweet when a guy wants so much to kiss his wife that if he has to do it in front of the whole world, he'll do it! :-)

Oh my Mrs. T – When you were asked to share your wedding photos, I was of the camp that this was one of the most personal days of your life, and I would have understood if you chose not to share at all, or only posted a couple of shots just to assuage the curiosity of all of us. I must a say, I was surprised and delighted to see the visual feast (in the most exquisite detail) that you have made available to us. I first saw you on the Today Show and thought you were beautiful. You were even more beautiful on your wedding day! Thank you so much for allowing us peek in on your magical day. Once again, I hope this was just the first of many, many more beautiful memories that you and your groom will create and share throughout the rest of your lives together.
