Garden Fresh

Reuters Image by Mike Blake

En route back from Mexico City, First Lady Mrs. O stopped in San Diego, CA for a visit to the New Roots Community Farm. Above, Mrs. O visits with Khadiga Musame, a refugee from Somalia, while admiring the locally grown chard. For the stop, Mrs. O dressed in gray trousers, paired with a blue camisole and pale yellow sandstone cardigan, embellished with light blue flowers. What an incredibly full week for Mrs. O!

Update: Mrs. O wears a J.Crew chiffon forget-me-not cardigan in sandstone sky, available here.

I think the cardigan is the Chiffon forget-me-not from J. Crew. I have admired it in the store!

Wow - Mrs. O has just been on pointwith all of her outifts. She seems to uplift people's sprits everywhere she goes. The woman she's standing with is wearing a kanga or leso from Kenya, this particular design was created to celebrate the President's win.

Mrs T - in the April issue of Essence there is a pic of Mrs. O in a blue dress during the holidays. Is there anyway you can post it here?

The cardi is springy and great for the upcoming season. That item will fly off the shelves.

I think the slacks could have been taken in a half size, or possibly trimmed mid-quad down.

@Groovy, you beat me to the punch! I saw that sweater last week in the J. Crew store nearby and said to myself ,"When you go on sale, you're coming home with me". This is indeed "forget-me-not!

Oh, wow. I think the slacks fit perfectly! I really don't like seeing fabric pulling across the thighs and elsewhere. I think clothes should skim the body to appear elegant and comfortable. "Sexiness," that's another thing. But I don't think it's appropriate most of the time for a First Lady. Just my opinion!

Someone gave me one of these kangas! It's folded up in my closet! WOW! Mine's not as bright blue, so the cardigan Mrs. O is wearing might actually not be yellow but in fact what J. Crew calls "sandstone".

The sweater is called the Chiffon Forget-Me-Not and retails for $128 online. Grab one while you can! Comes in 2 pale colors!

Mrs.O looks so radiant in this pic. The colors of that sweater are so sweet and complementary with the neutral gray pants. However, I have one bit of criticism for this outfit and something I notice she does repeatedly.

As a tall woman myself, I know that wearing a top or sweater that hits above the hips will only cut off your proportions. It makes your top half look short and your bottom half look abnormally long and large. The top/sweater length should be a little below the hips unless it is a cropped sweater/jacket. Also I wish some of her pants fit her better. This pant and a few others I have seen on her look like they have a long crotch and don't complement her shape.

I actually came across this Youtube video a while ago discussing how to properly dress as a tall woman. I noticed that Mrs.O also follows some of these rules. So for all the tall girls, check it out. It was pretty informative. They also have a video for petite, pear shaped and plus size women.

I don't see anything wrong with the fit of these pants at all. Of all the pants I have seen Mrs. Obama in, this is the very best fit on her. They looked relaxed and do not pull across the upper thigh/crotch....like the white suit.

What a busy week. Even after all the traveling she still looks awake and fresh! I hope she takes some time to rest.

That means we have good taste, doesn't it CID?!

Hopefully we will both be able to bring it home with us!

CNN reported today that Mrs. O will be joining PO as he attends the Polish Presidents funeral.
I think it's on Sunday.

After days of nothing but hits, I guess Mrs. O. is entitled to this miss. The cardigan, while quite pretty, is too tight and too short. The gray pants? Meh. Just my opinion, but I think silver flats are a bit "off" for a visit to a farm. Love Ms. Musame's dress!

Simple, sexy, sophisticated!!!!

I love the tops and that cardigan is just so pretty. The trousers ..... not so good. Too loose for me. I think I would have preferred maybe a pale blue trouser or a more fitted, casual looking type. I don't know. This looks like half office wear and half sunny garden wear. Kind of odd.

Man! I will be glad when we're out of this trip! I've only liked one thng all WEEK!!!

Did anyone notice the Obama print dress the refugee is wearing?

Friday, April 16, 2010 at 9:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterLew

I think Michelle did very well on this trip and represented the United States very well. The way she conducted herself and her choice of clothes. Nobody can be perfect all the time not forgetting that she is a human being just like us . She is doing her very best and all well meaning people are very proud of her.

You are dearly lovely and admired by many, myself included. I am your number one fan even if you decide to go in rags one of these days.
I think she will still look great in it because she is real , beautiful and genuine to the core and it shows no matter what she wears.

Go Michelle go!!!.

i don't think she stops over there to make a fashion statement but to shine the light on New Roots Community Farm's outstanding work.

so i will refrain from talking about her clothes.

Friday, April 16, 2010 at 10:57 AM | Registered Commenterchrystelle

She went to a farm, honestly don't think she gives two cents about the fit of her pants. Thanks goodness she doesn't have the same nitpicky hang ups are women here have. Haven't seen a woman so picked apart since the Hottentot Venus.

These pants may be a tad loose, but I like them much better then too tight. Many of her pants sort of wrinkle around her hips and crotch. I know that's a stylish way for clothes to fit, but I think it detracts from the line of the clothes--just my opinion. Her spirit and inner beauty speak so well for our country. What a lovely women!

Love Michelle's ensemble however Khadiga Musame's ensemble is outstanding as well. I do believe that President OBAMA's likeness is incorported into the design.

This is a site about the clothes that Mrs. O wears so, it stands to reason that her outfits would be discussed. Having said that, people in glass houses should not throw stones. We really need to work on seeing the best in people and not the worst.

The truth of the matter is that it is her inner beauty that shows beyond any outfit she wears. She has a radiance that casts a glow in the majority of her photographs. She is a happy person and it shows. And she does strike a captivating pose photographically...in spite of her physical flaws,(I'm sure those of you looking, have found some) she comes across as a natural beauty!

I am very honored to have her represent the United States as my First Lady. Looking forward to next week's showing of Mrs. O fashions. Thank you, Mrs. T. you do us a great service.

I agree Mimi --- sometimes comments seem nitpicky. However, when we read a comment I believe we need to look at the intention of the writer. I would never say anything against Mrs. O, the women. She is truly remarkable--warm, loving, smart, etc. My preference for pants that aren't quite as snug as she sometimes wears is just that-- my preference. By saying so in no way means I am picking at HER. There have been snotty comments posted at times--and we agree--comments directed at Mrs. O, the women, or her wardrobe, that are sarcastic or mean don't belong here. When we talk about clothes we all have our opinions--and I certainly didn't mean any disrespect to her. I know there must be a better way to express what I'm trying to say here. Perhaps I'm commenting on the TONE a writer uses.

I personally like Mrs O's emsemble. I too, like slacks that hang rather than fit snugly. However, whilst the cardi is very cute, the price tag is really pricey so I probably wont' be ordering one anytime soon. In in all, FLOTUS' trip has been a huge success and I'm proud of her.

A beautiful and spectacular First Lady!!!

Friday, April 16, 2010 at 9:03 PM | Registered CommenterEleroy

@ the other mimi - I echo auni's sentiments, and feel totally confident that I have never, since posting here well over a year ago, made any remark against Mrs. O the person or her agenda.

In fact, 99% of the time I adore Mrs. O's refreshing and unique take on clothing. I prefer to see Mrs. O in form fitting pants. Other posters prefer the opposite, and I think this thread has illustrated that.

If you want ugly remarks, look at some of the threads over this past week, and weigh them against a simple preference for the way a pant is tailored.

Cardigans seem to be Michelle's signature item of clothing........... I just wish they were a little roomier I think theywould be more flattering. Otherwise I like her wide choice of clothing from the young trendy to the elegant and more formal looks.

This looks rather frumpy.

Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 7:19 AM | Unregistered CommenterChar

oops, can there be two "Char" posters? I did not post this comment about "frumpy"; in fact I was out of town on Sunday
morning. If there are two, I will gladly change my Posting name. I would not say that about this
outfit. A J. Crew cardigan is hardly "frumpy".
