Mrs. O's Week in NYC

The first lady has spent the past week exploring New York City with her daughters, who are on their Spring Break. So what have the ladies been up to?
Piecing together coverage from the Chicago Sun-Times, The Huffington Post and the New York Post, the itinerary has gone something like this:
Saturday: Blue Man group and a stop at Dylan's Candy Bar.
Sunday: Brunch at Mesa Grill, followed by the musical "Memphis.". A tour of the Empire State Building and a stop by Magnolia Bakery for cupcakes.
Monday: Lunch at the Russian Tea Room and a preview of the new musical, "The Addams Family."
Tuesday: A trip to Harlem, including stops at The Studio Museum, The Apollo Theater and a bite to eat at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. Mrs. O and friends later dined at Aquavit.
Wednesday: A tour of the "Sesame Street" studio. A visit to the Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory and a well-known pizzeria, Grimaldi's.
What a fun week! Hope the Os are enjoying their Big Apple getaway!
Update: Lynn Sweet reports that the Os "returned to Washington on Wednesday, stopping at the Statue of Liberty en route back to the White House."

Sounds like a great weekend for all the Obama ladies!
No doubt a bunch of whinging minnies will be right here with various comments about the appropriateness of Sasha and Malia getting pizza and ice cream when their mother's leading an anti-obesity drive. If I MAY get in first:
1. They do loads of sports in school,
2. They are quoted as not being that keen on frequent fast food,
3. Both parents are on numerous records as saying that they regulate food on a day to day basis with occasional treats,
4. Spring Break in New York counts as a treat
5. Let the person who NEVER let their child eat something nice EVER cast the first conversational stone.
I hope everyone concerned had a blast.
Oh gosh, one can have ice cream and pizza on a VACATION, it is called moderation.
When I was a kid we ate healthy most of the time and had the occasional treat at McD's. Fast food was a TREAT not a daily meal like it has become now.
There is nothing wrong with TREATING yourself.
This is a great family and friends outing. I hope that everyone is having a good time.
Posh Tater, you are absolutely right! Tis a pity that so many nit-pick at everything that Michelle Obama does. I've read comments from folks on other blogs regarding this trip and far too many of them were ugly and mean-spirited. I wonder how these same folks would feel if it were them and their families being inundated with such hateful filth being said about them or members of their families. I doubt if they could stand-up to this constant trouncing.
Anyway, FLOTUS, wee Michelles, Grandmother Robinson and friends, enjoy yourselves. Have fun and enjoy every morsel of the wonderful foods that you are trying. Continue to have a fabulous Spring Break!
Great family moment away from the political arena and hectic environment. It’s really nice to see them having fun during their Spring Break. We always talk about her being such a great mom and here she is away from home with this great itinerary. A little bit of
history, exposure and ofcourse a treat of great pizza, pies the works, which they deserve,
as they try to stick to a healthy diet, and watch what they eat most of the time. It’s also
One of their family traditions.
These outings are very important for all families. Having privacy away from the WH on a one on one basis and mixing with other people, is crucial to their up-bringing and adds normalcy to their lives and a good balance while growing up as first daughters. I’m sure the girls were looking forward to this treat. Being down-to-earth and mixing with the community adds value to their work.
The eating excursions are getting some "blog talk" but it sounds like the usual hating. I've also read people questioning who's paying for it...come on. People really think the Obamas are just broke and living off of the government.
Anyway, I think it was a nice consolation to not going to Australia or Indonesia. She got them out of the bubble for part of their vacation, and out of the drama of passing health care. Now they can have a little more attention from dad, and tell him all about their trip to the Big Apple.
Some of my kids' fondest memories are from their Spring Vacations in NYC. Thanks, Posh, for the prophylactic post. Hopefully it will keep the meanies at bay.
There's nothing like the Big Apple for excitement and variety.
Wow that sounds like a great time wish it was me all I did over my spring break was home work and study.
LOL I hope no one tries to police criticize what the Obama girls eat while on vacation.
But perhaps this is part and parcle of what happens when a site dedicated to fashion makes a post that isn't fashion related.
Sometimes some folks don't know what to do with the info and look to criticize rather than just observe.
Mrs Obama is an exceptional and amazing mother. I really do admire her focus and steely resolve to raise her daughters as normally as possible. And yes, NORMAL, average people can afford this very American spring break New York treat the FIRST LADY of the United States just gave her two precious little daughters.
To hell with the ugly, bitter, hateful others who somehow managed to be conveniently MIA all these past years as previous Presidents and their families enjoyed unharrassed, all the perks that come with being PRESIDENT & FIRST LADY OF THE UNITED STATES!!!

Well I think it's great that Michelle and the two girls were able to get away for a few days and do some fun things. I am constantly amazed at the way people criticise Mrs O when they themselves have never been subjected to such scrutiny. The girls should be able to enjoy a holiday break without having to think about whether or not they are fulfilling someone's else's expectations of what they should think/wear/eat. In all the interviews that I've seen, Mrs O has been nothing but supportive of everyone's right to make their own choices about how they raise their family; however she is, rightly, keen to help people make informed decisions about food and raise awareness of how improving one's diet and increasing exercise has health benefits for the individual and the nation as a whole. Good on her! I do have some experience in this regard because, as a doctor's secretary, I see the repercussions of poor lifestyle decisions every day. Anyway, I hope we get to see the Obama family in Australia one day soon - we will do our best to give them a warm welcome. We have great pizza and ice-cream and hopefully they can enjoy some while they cruise around our beautiful harbour!
I love New York and it seems like they had a fun filled weekend.
Good for Michelle and her family. She has been working tremendously hard so it is nice to get away from time to time.
Mrs T - I respect the fact that you did not post pictures of the Obama's holidaying especially with the children, although I can't lie I would love to see more of her New York wardrobe.
Sounds like a great vacation for a busy mom and two young daughters. i'm sure they'll be back on track with eating on their return to WH. Would love to see pictures of their attire - I'm sure they wore some cute things.
You know, truthfully I've not seen any photos from the NYC trip except for the one image of Mrs. O in the Jasmin Shokrian skirt.
@Bridget from Australia
You are so full of common sense! You get it from so far away, and thanks for your intention to warmly welcome our wonderful First Family to Australia.
I know many families that adhere to a strict diet regiment most of the time but allow their children to have 'junk' treats every now and then. When I am in the city without my health nut husband, I treat myself to a hot dog with everything, (I also treat myself to indigestion) and before I leave I try to have a slice of Ray's pizza and usually have a lot of fun doing so, too. I hope they enjoyed themselves, immensely.
@Mrs T someone a topic or 2 back had posted a fuzzy pic of Mrs. O in a white blouse, black capris and bright blue shoes, she looked really glam.
I also had no idea that by clicking on the designer name I could see all their references so that is going to be my relaxation this weekend, thanks for that tip. Did anyone else offer suggestions for creating an index search. Love this blog
I am so relieved that there are not endless photos and that the press respected their right and need to not be hounded. At the same time -- oh! I would love to see photos of every single step this great family takes. Such a breath of fresh air, full of style and grace! Glad to know they enjoyed New York City.
Just returned a call to my cousin who went to the Verizon Center last night with her daughter to see Alicia Keyes and guess who was in Da House....First Lady Michelle Obama. She said no one knew she was there until the singer Robin Thicke made the announcement and the lights came up on the suite that she was in. She said that place went crazy. Camera's were popping and the audience applauded for 5 minutes.
Gotta Love Our FLY First Lady!!!!!
I wonder if Mrs. O and the Pres would adopt me? LOL! love them. I hope they had a wonderful time.
I read that Mrs. O will be honored with a “Kids Choice Award “for her work in helping fight childhood obesity. I read two different versions, one saying she would be in attendance live, the other saying that her acceptance would be via pre-recorded tape…the latter seems more likely to me. It will be televised here on the West Coast tomorrow night (3/27), on the Nickelodeon channel @ 7 pm.
Jazz, thank you for the link. I enjoyed it. Mrs. O does look fabulous in the black capris, white shirt and blue shoes. What a Lady.
Obama Foodorama notes that the Obamas will be hosting France's President Nicolas Sarkozy and wife Carla Bruni Sarkozy on Tuesday 3/30 for a private dinner.
I would LOVE to have been at that gig. Alicia Keys AND Robin Thicke???? Man!
Good for Michelle and the kids!! Very well-deserved - I hope they had a marvellous time!!
