Bundled Up

The president and first lady visited Sidwell Friends School today, where the president braved the cold sans overcoat and Mrs. O bundled up in a burgundy, belted coat, worn with an ivory scarf. Tomorrow Mrs. O will meet with students from the London borough of Islington at the White House.

Per the ever informative Lynn Sweet:

Thursday, February 18: First Lady Michelle Obama will meet with students from schools across the London borough of Islington who were rewarded with a trip to the United States sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in London for winning an Islington Black History Month essay competition. This event builds on Mrs. Obama's efforts to engage young people in the United States and around the world.

In April 2009, Mrs. Obama visited the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School (EGAS) in Islington. One of the ten students participating in the First Lady's event currently attends EGAS. This 11:00 AM EST event - held in the Old Family Dining Room - will be covered by a US pool and a UK pool.

Both of you look very wonderful as usual. I hope all goes well with GOP tomorrow. If not. Plz Mr. President just lead and get things done with the Dems that we want. Have a great day.

I love the color of the coat but it makes Mrs. O look a bit too full around the hips.

I must say, somtimes the Obamas look like they are right out of fashion catalogue. I love Mrs O 's coat. I have seen it before. I think.

Don't get me wrong. I love Mrs. O, Ms. T and this site generally. However, this occasion was a parent/teacher conference at a private school in D.C. I don't think it was a proper time or place to comment on fashion. Whatever their obligations, this was a super-private moment for the First Family, as it had only to do with their daughters. As a liberal, I'm still conservative when it comes to a mom and dad's interaction with their kid's teacher. I don't give a hoot about what the O's are wearing.

They are perfection. Love the coat, love the color - perfect. Though I'd love to see Mr. President in a coat!!!..he makes me cold, just looking at him. LOL

Love it Classic!

TBritt, I agree with every sentence in your post. And not to get all political here, but the mayor of my town is retiring after being elected to 5 terms, and when asked his political idol, he said, "Barack Obama." Our mayor is old (76) and white, which I only mention because I think it's remarkable how much the Obamas mean to a broad spectrum of Americans. Including me, of course!

@Erin, I completely understand your point of view and this is something I try to be very sensitive to ... not showing private family moments. When the Obamas were in Hawaii over the holidays, for example, I posted very few of the photos that surfaced, because to me, they felt overly intrusive. Please do know this is something I'm very mindful of. Generally I find photos published on Getty or Reuters are in good taste though.

@Erin - if you have no interest at all in what the Obama's are wearing, may I suggest spending some time on the White House website and blog instead? You will be spared all references to clothes and most references to family.

I'm loving the coukld and cut of that coat. I also like the touch of ivory, which just lifts it out of being dark and dull. How is Mr O, a well known coldphobic, managing without a coat in the snow??!!!

Love the coat and the President's suit and tie (no red, thank goodness). Both are classics. But, I love that splash of YELLOW the First Lady is carrying! What is it, a handbag? A folder? Something else?

I would like to remind Erin that the Obamas' are public figures, so when they go out in public, even if it's to their daughter's school, there will be press coverage of some type. As one would say, this goes with the job. There were no pix of their daughter's with them, so their privacy wasn't intruded on, which is a good thing, as they just happen to be the children of the First couple, not public figures themselves.

As for fashion, this is one color that really works well for Mrs O...and agree, it's nice to see the President wearing something other then a red tie. I really wish that Mrs O would try to get him to be more interested in variety with his ties, as there are so many beautiful patterned ones out there, and sadly, for men there aren't a lot of options to make one's professional wardrobe very individual. It seems too many politicians always wear red ties...how boring.

Folks, as I said, I LOVE this site. First, thanks Mrs. T for the note - I come here because I appreciate how everyone commenting behave like grown-up, unlike a lot of other sites! And to Posh Tater and JEB I just want to say that I'm totally into fashion - I have a history of commenting here and credit card bills to prove it! Maybe I was being overly sensitive last night, it was just how the moment hit me. No big deal. And yes, the O's are public figures. But I personally don't think an outing to a parent/teacher conference is on par with them traveling overseas or even going out to dinner in D.C. The event was totally about their girls, and so I considered it somewhat in the "look the other way" category.

Love the color of the coat.

PostTater: I think the President is going without a coat b/c it his way to convey that he's "tough" and "manly". Other presidents usually wore dark peacoat trenches. That's just his quirk. Two, after the whole Weatherproof jacket fiasco, I doubt he will wear any coat or jacket for the remainder of his presidency for fear the coat company will try to use him to market their product. It's a wise choice for that reason, alone...It was unseemly for that company to use him in a marketing campaign in the middle or TIMES SQUARE without his permission. I like Mrs O's coat and the ivory scarf...It's a real feminine touch.

This is a great color and a gorgeous coat from the waist up. Don't care for the cut of the coat's skirt...nobody needs all of that extra fabric.

When I saw the pictures on Getty Images the first thing I noticed was that little pop gold clutch (?) that contrasted with that beautiful wool coat. Both FLOTUS and POTUS look nice in those pictures. They compliment each other so well. This is a good color for our Michelle and the cut of the coat is hitting her right in all the right places. She looks stylish and fresh.

Hmm. Willet784, that's an interesting take. I really don't get that Mr O worries that much about looking manly or tough. I just thought he'd forgotten it. Probably running late!
