Winter Wardrobe

Photo by Karen Bleier / Getty Images

Mrs. O attended a ceremony to celebrate the new Fisher House, which serves military families, on the campus of Naval Support Activity in Bethesda, Maryland today. For the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony, the first lady wore a grey and gold argyle skirt by Moschino paired with a grey turtleneck and black boots. The ensemble was topped by a Donna Karan coat, which the first lady debuted in New York this October.

Our fabulous First Lady's Child Nutrition legislation is on its way to her husband's desk to be signed into law.

Congratulations, Mrs. Obama! Kids and parents all across the country thank you for your tireless efforts to curb childhood hunger and childhood obesity.

The one word that pops in my mind about this look is SHARP. And Black Hair Lesson moment: Her hair is done; it's just slicked back as opposed to combing her bangs out :-)

Wow...this is another out of the park outfit! A warm, beautiful fall outfit. I'm loving Mrs. O more and more! She is a lovely, elegant lady who wears her own style well. Just wondering why are there always so many comments about her hair? I don't remember the "hair thing" being a big deal with any other First Lady. Hmmmmmmm...just wondering????? It is what it is...lovely, any way she decides to style it.

I really like this outfit. She looks soooo cute. (Also a very good cause)

I am lovin' these soothing colors...and her hair looks regal, divine!

Classy! I don't know why, but I love coats. The drape of this one and the color is really attractive.

And the Fisher House is a great cause; I hope some of you keep it in mind as you're considering holiday charitable donations.

She's so trendy, but not in a bad way. That color,"bronzed twig" in J. Crew speak, is so right now! Love her.

Gorgeous, top to bottom. Love that coat; comfortable yet quite a refined, hip cut-qualities not easily merged in the winter outerwear department! Beautiful, patterned, textured skirt. Love the dark tights. All cozy, all style.

I do, however, think brown shades don't suit her as well as other shades.

FLOTUS is looking very good.

Nice!!!!! She looks very elegant. And you are correct, Nora B. Her hair is "done".

Love the outfit, especially the coat. Also, I love her hair like this.

She looks great! I love the skirt & not a hair out of place.

Thank you NoraB. A black woman's hair is very versatile and can be worn in numerous styles. Combing the hair back is always low maintenance and chic.

Yes...thank you NoraB. Her hair is "done"!!! I love this outfit and would wear it in a New York minute!

This outfit rocks. I always love Mrs O in the warmer colours of the spectrum and that bronze brown is particularly nice. It really lifts the grey out of the black and austere spectrum into warmth, it's lovely. I can almost overlook the Argyle!!! God I hate Argyle. The dangerous thing is, it almost looks GOOD here! How awful is that??!! I may have to give up the hatred of a lifetime, mutter, mutter, mutter.....

I love the coat. I would personally prefer it in a different color. does anyone know where is could be purchased

Not my favorite look for our glorious First Lady, but I still adore her.

I really like her hair !

Friday, December 3, 2010 at 2:55 PM | Unregistered Commenterriver rush

Future first ladies, take note, this is how its done. The look is clean and polished from head to toe. I'm not sure which piece to admire the most, the skirt or the coat. 10.

She knows exactly what looks good on her. I love this look. Yes, her hair is done!

Like everyone else, I like the outfit. And I don't know what it is, but there something about a "sista" in boots (especially black boots) that is so hot! Classy. Powerful! (Absolutely no disrespect intended to women who don't or cannot identify or appreciate the cultural reference, "sista." So, fall back if you don't "get it.")

Not sure what to make of the coat though. It seems to not have any buttons--or even a belt, giving it a very "wrapped-in-a-blanket" (i.e., "unstructured") look. Is this a new look or trend? Or am I just naive? School me, please. I learn a lot from you all.

...It just occurred to me that I have seen a few women here and there on the fashionable streets of New York City walking around wrapped in blankets adorned with brooch and/or belt, during the winter.

Have we seen this coat before, but in dark charcoal??? I really, really think I've seen the great-big-huge-collar coat before???? OK, after hunting for an hour! No it's not quite this coat, but it was another GREAT BIG COLLAR number! http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2009/04/michelle_obama_slideshow.html#photo=4x35630
Dec 24, 2009, leaving for Hawaii. Black with an actual collar-cut, but one that went clear to her waist!

They're to-scale for someone of her height and build, but I'm 5'3" and quite round, so this probably isn't a look that would work for me, ha-ha!!

Friday, December 3, 2010 at 4:18 PM | Unregistered Commenterchimene

@Marcus Perry - in response to your question about the coat that Mrs. Obama is wearing, it is called a "clutch coat." It is a style that was in vogue in the 1940s/1950s. Women have been wearing this style of coat for quite awhile...you have probably seen this style in a variety of women fur or faux fur coats.

I hope that this was helpful.

The clothes she has been wearing for the past few weeks are much better looking than the too-young, trendy things of the past. At last she's starting to look more chic and stylish, as a First Lady should.

No, you're not naive, you have a good eye. You're right that it doesn't have any belt or buttons and is unstructured. I'm not sure I would call it a "trend" like it's just something that popped up this year...it is something I've seen in outerwear for a little while. For example, I have a cardigan that has sleeves but no buttons -- it's sort of a combo shawl/wrap thingamabob. That's the same thing going on here with Mrs. O.

I also have a coat that looks more like a traditional coat, but it has no buttons, just a belt to tie around the waist. I got that SEVERAL years ago (maybe close to 10 years at this point), so, not very "trendy."

I started following this blog just before the election but just recently started posting. i find MO taste in clothes fascinating and to me this outfit is perfection. I don't ever plan to wear Argyle, (I understand Posh) but it just works here. I like the visual effect of it all.

I love this outfit. It's very chic and cityfied (yep, I said it :)

BTW, Marcus Perry, I love you! "Fall back if you don't get it." Ha, That's too funny.

All in all, I find this look very chic. Love the boots(again!), the skirt not so much but a very elegant coat.
Very polished. What's this argument about her hair again?? It looks perfectly fine to me.

had to chuckle when I read the hair comment, 'cause first thing I thought when I saw the pic was: 'love her hair that way.'

beautiful coat.

Sunday, December 5, 2010 at 6:26 PM | Unregistered Commenterpoiret

This is my favorite way that our Michelle wears her hair, plain and away from the face. What a gorgeous face she has! Anyway, this is such an understated, sophisticated ensemble. I know that I'm probably in the minority here, but argyle is my favorite pattern after polka dot and paisley. Oh, I almost forgot tartan plaid. Call me crazy but I like them. Donna Karan really did good with this coat. That coat is really saying something!!
