Mrs. O Lands in Copenhagen

Pool Image / Reuters
Mrs. O arrived this morning in Copenhagen for the IOC's Olympic bid meeting. A true advocate to her home town, she will spend the next two days rallying in support of Chicago as the home for the 2016 Olympics. Stepping off the plane, Mrs. O wore a bold, geometrically patterned jacket paired with a knee-length black and white tweed sheath dress. A trademark bow belt added a final detail at the waist.
It may have been a black and white ensemble, but we give it a gold!
Update: Mrs. O wears a Jason Wu tweed dress, paired with a Zero + Maria Cornejo Ivy jacket in printed tweed with a grosgrain belt.

It's funny - when I saw the pictures of Mrs O getting off the plane I didn't like this outfit at all and I thought she looked pale and grey. Later, when I saw her making comments to the press at a hotel, I thought she looked amazing. Radiant, fabulous. So there you go.... lighting and distance (the footage was mostly from far away) make a whole lotta difference!!!
her stunning outfit reminds of the inverse pattern dress and coat she wore to meet the Sarkozys, so maybe Thakoon??
Getty has a few pictures up. Getting off the plane, the shots were pretty much from the waist up, and that is a LOT of pattern. But when you see the whole outfit - especially the cute blue shoes - it's a great look for her. She has great presence and is tall and statuesque enough to carry all the pattern, belt and peplum action going on here. She also looks like she's having a great time.
If this effort is not successful, and the games go elsewhere, I really hope the press and other critics can let it go. It seems to me that MO travelling to Copenhagen falls right into her job description. There has already been criticism of POTUS going over too, but it does not seem to me that he's using his time unwisely. I mean, he's going to be asleep for virtually the entire flighit, and he has to sleep somewhere. And it's not like health care and everything else gets put on hold just because he's out of town for a day. As he said to John McCain, you have to be able to do more than one thing at a time when you're President.
I really liked this dress. I am also sure, the belt is her signature in this outfit. The green shoes look lovely.
There's a photo of her on the Times Online page:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article6855343.ece
I like the overall shape but the patterns seem too much together but can't really tell from such a photo.
I've seen the photos, to quote some one from Huffington Post comments:
"Michelle O-stunning"
When I heard she was going on this mission, I thought to myself "I hope she wears a suit". Well I got my wish but, AS USUAL, she has done something totally unexpected and and different from what anybody could possibly imagine. She never fails to stand out in the crowd. I love it. The shoes look like the green ones she wore on Inauguation Day. My only nitpick is the skirt looks a little too short, I don't care for her in skirts above the kneecap.
P.S. Thanks Mrs. T for helping me get registered, finally
I've purchased 2 pairs of brightly colored shoes for the Fall season thanks to FLOTUS. She is definitely a trend-setter. I've never owned a pair of turquoise kitten heels before Mrs. O. They are comfortable and I am now brave enough to wear them with almost any color combination.
Her dress is FANTABULOUS! I love the length and the belt is such a great choice.
I am soooo happy she is representing the US in Copenhagen. I hope we win the bid. I will definitely head to Chicago if we are the host city.
This is a good look for her. It is a hit. Sometimes she misses, but here she looks good.
I'm always so anti suits. I feel like they age a woman at least 10 years. However, Mrs. O seems to find the ones that will stand out and generate conversation. Someone posted a video of her landing in Copenhagen, and I must say, I like this suit. 3rd time in less than a month I've had to eat my words and bow down to the suit. Anyway, I thought it was perfect. And babs, I'm the exact opposite of you because I thought it was the perfect length. Anything too long will make something mother of the bride-ish (that is probably our generational differences coming out)! Besides, she has great legs!
Any city but Chicago, PLEASE!
As a Chicagoan, I hope the mission fails, no matter how nice she looks. They should have stayed home and let the Olympics go to a city that wants them.
(That said, if we do get stuck with them, I have a nice condo near one of the parks that they plan to destroy for an Olympic stadium that I will rent for an exorbitant sum - at least enough to cover my share of the increased property taxes that will be imposed to pay for this boondoggle and line the pockets of Mayor Daley's friends.)
I posted this link on the other thread of Mrs. O arriving in Copehhagen. A couple of other links of her have been added (speaking to the press) and more will probably be added for the next few days and when the President arrives---check back through this link.

@ Babs
Those are not the inauguration day shoes. Different color, those had a rounded toe, these have a pointed one. Different heel too.
I like this outfit on her. Like some have mentioned, skirt may be seen as short to some. But style and fit, I give this 5 stars.
Thanks for the links, Janelle.
I like this suit and the shoes, but does anyone know why Mrs. O never has a handbag!!
I surprised myself by liking this outfit very much. I am normally more conservative, but with the self-tie bringing it all together, it's quite good-looking. I, too, like Mrs. O's hemlines when they are a tad bit longer. This is not the dress she wore in the White House kitchen. It was much more of a white background with small black flecks.
LOL@ Janelle, trust you to find a Danish site.... I LOL so hard people at work thought I went crazy. I Love it!
BTW, where have you been girl? You were missed !
Love the outfit pictured at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article6855343.ece (h/t Couture Coco). Looking forward to more detailed photos.
Here are some more pictures from the dinner in copenhagen with oprah.

The different patterns work well together because the color palette is the same - black and white.
I cannot believe people are still.. " hoping and crossing fingers" for her to wear what THEY feel appropriate. Relax.... give yourselves a break.. and really MRS. OBAMA is always a smash in whatever she wears. She feels it, and you should too in your own fashion sense and choices..:)
Very cute dress at the dinner. Fabulous.

Oh,and i was right about Sarah Brown stepping up her style game and being influence by Michelle. She's getting help from young British designers. I think the Obamas trip there really did a number on her because she just got slammed in the press having to stand there next to Michelle and Carla.
Her clothes are looking much better.
Thanks Janelle and Sierra.
I can't really say that I love the pattern on pattern, but it is very Mrs. O, so it's cool on her.
I really like the blue dress she has on in the pics Sierra provided. And I am in love with that necklace. I could make alot of cute outfits with that necklace ;-)
Great photo of the outfit:

Hyde Parker,
I just heard on the news that if Chicago get the Olympics then it will bring 300,000 new jobs and billions of dollars. I am sorry that you would be affected, but it does seem as if it would be good for Chicago and America if the USA wins the Olympic games.
I love the way Mrs. O uses pops of color to make her outfits stand out. Those blue shoes are to die for, and I am going to follow Mimi O's' lead and buy myself a nice pair of bright colored pumps!
Mrs. O gets a gold medal for this outfit. I love the bold pattern. Kind of reminds me of the reverse pattern dress with matching coat she wore in, I believe, France...black and rose print. Anybody remember the one I'm talking about?
My head's reeling from all the great looks this week.
You go Girl!!
I am so excited that they brought David Robinson with them (behind FLOTUS right shoulder).
I know that whether or not Chicagoans want the Olympics, with this dynamo First Couple flying in to personally lobby, it's Chicago's bid to lose. Michelle being the fashion trendsetter of the moment only helps their cause!
Ok, so many things to say. Glad she is is Copenhagen and the Chicago committee is bringing their 'A' game. Oprah, Michelle O and the Prez speaking for the delegation in addition to the athletes??!!! Plus I have read in a Time blog that the Chicago delegation is hiring the people experienced in the Salt Lake City and Atlanta games to round out their expertise. This delegation is basically saying: "We are willing, more than capable, want and deserve these games." I love that they are being so comprehensive about it.
Oh yeah, Mrs. O's outfit. At first I thought, too much black and white, but the shoes and the bow really help to balance the outfit. The dinner with Oprah outfit I can't see very well but I love the necklace. I think Michelle O is striking a good balance as first lady. She is different--youthful and confident--yet traditional in not being forceful on policy and her outfits strike that balance. She's really unique.
I think this suit is a knock-out on Mrs. O. She has the height and presence to carry all this pattern beautifully. I, too, prefer the length of her skirts to be just below the kneecap.
My first post on Mrs. O. I'm a big Mrs. O. fan, both the blog and the lady.
I'm a Chicago resident and I'm hoping we do get the olympics. With everything that's going on in our city today, some extra attention would be good. Will cause the mayor to step up his game.
Found this great statement necklace on Chadwicks.com. It's backordered until Oct. 24. Can't wait for it to come. http://www.chadwicks.com/Catalog/CatalogQuickOrderDetails.aspx?QoId=2140-83809-1075&BlueBox=&source=qo&PurchaseType=0
Did anyone notice the confident professional woman who stepped off that plane in Copenhagen this morning? I liked what I saw and yes her suit was smashing!
As usual, Mrs. O nails the unusual. In my humble opinion, one of her greatest sartorial contributions has been popularizing innovative, unexpected blends of patterns and colors. Her approach to colors/patterns is commonplace in indigenous non-western cultures or, in the western world, acceptable only on haute couture runways. Her fashion truly merges the beauty of western tailoring with multi-cultural aesthetic approaches. In this instance,a gorgeous African-print inspired ensemble...SD
Hyde Parker I felt the same about London going for the Olympics. England supposedly has no money for SO many things that are basic necessities but suddenly we've managed to raise millions for building various Olympic stadia, resulting in the razing of hundreds of homes and small businesses to create a vast area that will die the minute the Olympics leaves. So I get the dichotomy. Plus, it's pretty much guaranteed that the build will go way over budget and the brunt of that will be paid by raising London's Council Tax for a year or two. I think the world has let the Olympic machine get a little out of hand. It wouldn't hurt everyone to let the countries that already have Olympic villages to host the games in turn. It's such a terrible waste of money when there are vast villages already built that are ghost towns on a day to day basis, and just cost money to maintain for no reason.
Having said that, I do think it's great that the O's are supporting the bid and really getting their weight behind it. It's no good to say "yes we support Chicago's Olympic bid" in a video but staying at home with the dog and letting someone else do the legwork. So I applaud the commitment. And who couldn't applaud the outfit?! Wonderful! Definitely, as someone else said, bringing the A game!!!!
I'm waiting with baited breath to see if we get Crown Princess Mary and Michelle Obama in the same room during this visit. If we get those photo's, I'm retiring, I'll be happy!
I'm also wondering if we'll see Mrs O coming home with some Danish design. So many great designers there, I'd love to see her come home with an outfit or two. Malene Birger or Elise Gug, for a start.
By the way, I heard a rumour that Mrs Obama will be on the cover of November's Vogue, can anyone confirm it or is it just a rumour. Thanks
The jacket looks like Thakoon--the print is very similar to some of his early 2009 fabrics--even looks somewhat similar to the batik-influenced fabrics he used in his Target line.
NICE THERE GOES THAT BOW AGIAN SHE LOVES BOWS AT LEASE IS NOT AS BIG AS THE OTHERS.
She just gets better & better. She is a delight!
@ Mrs. T:
The jacket is not Wu? I know the patterns are not the same, but I assumed this was coordinating ensemble. Interesting!
Hi Christina,
The jacket is not Jason Wu, per his press representative. I believe I know who it is, but I'm waiting on a confirmation.
Agree that the pieces are remarkably well coordinated!
Best,
Mary
I love this outfit and the news that Mrs O paired this Jason Wu dressed with another designer and I think they go together so creatively. I simply cannot wait to see who the jacket is. Mrs O does add excitement to her fashion game.
This outfit is too gray, and doesn't electrify. Nor does it quite say, "Chicago is about business". These are concepts which her attire should symbolize during her Olympic lobbying days. I think there's been like one Jason Wu outfit that I've liked on her, so he's hardly my fave designer on her.
the printed wool tweed jacket is by zero + maria cornejo.
A keffiyeh print dress and green shoes. Geesh, if that isn't her unsubtle way of demonstrating which side of the Palestinian vs Israeli conflict she supports then I don't know what is.
Wow Claire, I really think that you're reading waaay too much into the dress and shoes. Really? Subliminal messages (through shoes and fabric, no less) from an intelligent woman who speaks her mind? Are you really serious? I thought this site was supposed to be about FLOTUS fashion, not about spewing of hateful rhetoric. Come on !
Wow, Charlene, why so close-minded? We don't all see things thru those 0bama issued rose-colored glasses some people wear so dutifully. This site is about discussing the flotus' fashion choices, one either loves, hates or is unaffected by fashion. Clearly her choices aren't always winners.
You might be surprised to learn fashion is all about making a statement be it cultural, social and yes even political. The statement can be blatant or subtle.
From day one Mrs 0 has been sending messages thru her choice in fashion. Her handlers have worked very hard to make her look at the very least AS IF she has always possessed polish, poise, class, etc. She is intelligent but reportedly seriously muzzled by her handlers so as to not make a total fool of herself as she was prone to do in the early stages of campaigning.
Read thru the list of IOC voting members and it won't be easy to overlook the fact that it contains a awful lot of Middle Eastern members. Mrs 0 went to Copenhagen in a desperate last ditch effort to sway votes why would she NOT use fashion to show where her true loyalties rest seeing as she can't really speak her pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel mind.
Puhlease, that keffiyeh print is bearly tolerable in a scarf/tablecloth but in a dress its just hideous and with green shoes?
This choice definitely belongs in the "DON'T" list.

(picture of a model wearing keffiyeh print)
Claire.....not even close. Nice try but you are really stretching things to suit your political view. Not buying it.
Claire, you've finally jumped the shark!!! Your blindingly air grasping declaration about and interpretation of Mrs Obama and even this choice of outfit would have been so odious if it weren't so stupendously ludicrous. Yet, with your post we are still to believe that you come on this site in good faith to have respectful, cordial and amiable fashion-focused conversations about the first lady of the United States??
With my Obama-issued rose colored glasses firmly in place I have just one refrain left: Leio, leio, lei Cuckooo!!!
http://racked.com/uploads/2008_3_urbanskeffiyeh.jpg
Model on the left wearing keffiyeh print.
canyongal, it's not my fault you lack imagination to see the resemblance.
camille:"Leio, leio, lei Cuckooo!!!" that says more about you than it does about me.
