A Statement Necklace

Photo by Vladimir Rodionov / Getty Images

President Mr. O and First Lady Mrs. O met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his wife Svetlana outside of Moscow yesterday. Mrs. O wore a white twin set paired with black trousers. The understated ensemble was punctuated by a statement necklace -- a Fenton by Dana Lorenz necklace, made of crystal, silver and glass with vintage coin detail. The necklace is available at Ikram in Chicago.

Does she ever wear anything high end or anyone that is NOT from Ikram? This is beginning to be a monopoly. anyhow, she does look lovely.

Those necklaces are very unique and creative. I bet the artist is a fascinating person.

LIKE SPRINKLES ON A MUFFIN...

Nothing like a statement necklace or strands of them to crown an ordinary outfit. Approved!!!

Both women are wearing white sweaters - Mrs. Medvedev is frumpy, Mrs. Obama is fabulous.

I was hoping you would have information on this gorgeous necklace. Fenton has an incredibly fabulous collection! Thank you, Mrs. T.

It's like candy. Or a piece from Pretty, Pretty Princess. Oui, Mrs. O looks like a fairytale princess herself here! :)

"Mrs. Medvedev is frumpy, Mrs. Obama is fabulous."

Sadly, freanny57, I couldn't agree with you more. Mrs O looks svelte, contemporary, edgy and confident. Mrs Medvedev looks boring. Again.

I love that necklace.

She looks absolutely lovely...understated, but modern, fun, chic and very spot on!

Sade: If she did "high-end", they'd also be those who'd demand her head on a platter for thumping her nose at the suffering masses of the world in these austere times.

As for shopping at Ikram, it is clear that Mrs O. intends to continue to live her life with minimal disruption. The presidency gig is not forever and succumbing to unnecessary and avoidable (and expensive) changes in habit and routine that may not always be sustainable beyond this phase is unwise.

The first lady is clearly a level-headed, clear thinking, uber smart woman who refuses to be sucked into the fleeting hype of things. She's not milking this in shallow, predictable ways for what it's worth or getting carried away were others might have...

And that's why folks like me utterly and unapologetically adore and respect her...

At last! An outfit of which I unabashedly adore ALL parts!! The necklace is fabulous. I do not agree that Mrs. Medvedev looks frumpy. I like her skirt, and she certainly is dressed much better on the whole than Sarah Brown was.

That necklace makes the outfit, and if you look at Ikram's jewelry they always choose very unique, unusual pieces. I'll bet this one is as distinctive and a stunner up close. I like that she used it over the plain white twinset, and I think she should get more pants cut like those trousers.

She's always elegant. I learn lots about dressing well from her, She's not TOO showy, it's like she has a knack of being Just Right all the time! It is Fascinating!

I really love everything about this outfit: the fit of the trousers, the simplicity of the backdrop which allows the fabulous necklace to shine. Great look!!!

I also disagree that Mrs. M looks frumpy. Her hair could possibly be a little more stylish, but the skirt and sweater are quite nice looking. On my one brief visit to Russia, I learned that Russian women are very much into fashion--even those with little to spend. One lovely young tour guide announced one morning that her dress was Armani. Of course, we were impressed, not to mention secretly shocked that she could buy Armani on a tour guide's pay. Then she giggled and added that she had bought it at a consignment shop. She explained that Russian women enjoy quality and will buy fewer pieces, even second-hand pieces, rather than sacrifice quality.

I think they both look great, and thank goodness, no wide belt. Mrs. O looks very fresh in that white. I also like Mrs. M. and the way she dresses. As for whether she's "frumpy" or not -- she's plus size, and to many people, that equates to frumpy. I think she dresses elegantly and appropriately for her figure type. I also find it interesting that her accessories always match or blend with what she's wearing -- definitely NOT the trend right now, with many unmatched pieces and different colors in the same outfit shown in fashion magazines. Wonder if she'll pick up on that trend, or continue to do her own thing?

I think this outfit really demonstrates how an accessory can make an ensemble. The necklace is gorgeous and turns this simple everyday look into a WOW!!!

I question making comments about the First Lady of the Soviet Union. She is a lovely woman--and I don't understand the need to tear her down.

Michelle does look great--and the necklace is a great addition to this outfit!

President and Mrs. O look great... they are such a beautiful couple! No comment for the other couple:-/

Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 12:24 AM | Unregistered CommenterShana

I didn't tear her down. I didn't say she was stupid, or any other kind of personal insult. I said that her outfit is dull. Which it is. (In my view.)

Mrs M looks like a charming woman, and she was certainly very sweet at the theatre performance when Sasha was climbing all over Michelle. That was a genuine laugh. They look like a nice couple, in fact. And, her outfit wasn't that interesting. It's my belief that Mrs M could look completely stunning in an outfit that's a little less conservative.

I also agree with the very apposite remark of Christen's, saying that she looked a whole lot better than Sarah Brown did. Too true! All the outfits I have seen Mrs M in fitted very well indeed. I'd just like to see her in something scarlet and of an interesting cut. Some of the Russian designers produce extraordinary clothes. The Chanel thing was a bit of a swizz.

I was just commenting. Still OK for us to do that I hope?

First of all to "baby-lady" who says Mrs. M is "plus size"? are you kidding me??? She's a normal size woman that dresses a bit more conservative than our president's wife....that's all. I think Mrs.M and Mr. M both look youthful and bright. I am from russia and people there put thinking into what they wear....even if it isn't all bright colors and abstract like Mrs. O's. You would never see anyone walking the streets in riped jeans or sweats like here.

Mrs. M is PLUS size??? You have GOT to be kidding me! In comparison to what, a stick? Come on!

I watched "The View" today and they were talking about how people were going crazy over the clutch MO was carrying in this pic. They said people were saying it was like $6,000, but in reality it is only $1,000. Yes, $1,000 is alot to a person like me, but she can afford it. I am like why do people care because it is her money, she is not using taxpayers money to buy her purses. The naysayers and the media can be so petty sometimes. It really does urk my nerves.

Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 12:38 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

It irks me as well Nyon. The New York Daily News ran a piece today about the $6000 alligator bag. The White House denied that Mrs. O was carrying the alligator bag, correcting that it was a patent leather version, which is of course much less costly.

Thanks Mrs. T for the article. Now I see, from what the article reported, the maker of the bag is who started all this hoopla. In their effort to get publicity, they started this Great Debate. Of course, the media is going to take whatever they can to make a story.

Oh that kind of thing just bores me to tears. We all know they do it, there's no point to them doing it, it just creates a storm in a teacup and wastes paper. Gah!!!!

I keep coming back to this wonderful necklace. It's an outstanding piece. I might have to make one for myself - can't find it on the website though. There are a lot of other gorgeous things there - I particularly liked the pearls in black lace. Numnumnum.

(Mrs M plus size???!!! Er, no. Normal woman sized I think!)
