Mrs. O Lunches with Nancy Reagan

P060309SA-0498Official White House Photo by Samantha Appleton

Mrs. O lunched with former First Lady Nancy Reagan today. The lunch came after President Mr. O signed a bill creating the Ronald Reagan Centennial Commission, which will honor the 100th anniversary, in 2011, of the late president’s birth.

Mrs. O has fully embraced a summer palette, wearing a striped T-shirt and floral cardigan from Gap (on sale for $24.99!), and white textured pencil skirt. A single strand of pearls and diamond bangles accessorized the look.

Update: Mrs. O wears a Michael Kors, Spring 2009, white lacquered boucle pencil skirt.

Willow, Amen to your comment at 1:31 re Obama as POTUS at this moment. my sentiments exactly.

I agree there wasn't a lot to learn from the NBC special but watched and enjoyed anyway. There has been so much interest and fascination with this family, this administration, so many "behind-the-scenes" print, web and TV articles/reports on the family, WH staffers, cabinet members already and nearly weekly new WH candid photos that there wasn't a lot that hadn't already been covered in some way.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! Looking forward to seeing the Obamas in Europe.

I'm not really liking this look on MO. I don't like the GAP combo. The color and the fit just don't work. It looks comfortable, kind of like pajamas.

I think Nancy deserved a little couturefashion from MO. Afterall, Nancy had so much fashion drama during the time she was President.....I mean, First Lady.

I got to see POTUS' speech to the Muslim world for the first time late last night. He did draw some lines in the sand, and he is courageous for doing so. He stated the obvious - people from both sides of the argument realize that middle ground must be found in the Israel/Palestine solution. POTUS does not posture, nor does he suffer fools, as evidenced in the NBC special.

I am not sure what the brouhaha was about in terms of Mrs. O's wardrobe choice (we have this go-round every other week or so), but Christina - I am with you. Zen works for me most, but not all, of the time! I lose it when the nasty sarcastic stuff flies off the page.

Have a good WE all - am enjoying the Cape and a nice yoga retreat with a little biking interspersed between rain clouds.

On to Paris with the First Family after that!

Thanks for the camel shot alert, Willow!

You are welcome Ann#1. I can't wait for the Paris Pictures. I hope she puts the girls in darling little dresses!

I love that she recycles items in her wardrobe and she has a lovely, graceful, athletic look. But, seriously, does she have to button a cardigan over everything? If so, she needs to buy a size larger, and stop doing up the middle button. It's bunchy, old-maidish and fussy.

@Bevi - Democratic Underground has a bigger photo of Rahm and Reggie on camels, with the President standing nearby.

Have a great yoga retreat, you lucky person. (smile)

I also cannot wait to see what Sasha and Malia wear! Some crewcuts, gap? I would imagine Malia is going to want to wear some pre-teen stuff?

This link may have already been posted...just thought you might enjoy.

I disagree with everyone who thinks Mrs. O sweater is too lttle and that she wears them too much. I think the fit is perfect, if it was bigger it would be like one of them big baggy sweaters, you know the ones that are real comfy and you wear to keep warm and I don't think that is the look she is wanting.

Also, for those who think that it was not appropriate to wear a cardigan with Nancy Reagan, you have to get over that. I mean she wore a cardigan to see the Queen of England, so what makes you think she would not wear one to meet a former FLOTUS. Cardigans are Michelle Obama, that is just what she likes and you cannot fault her for that. And I am not beating up on the people who feel this way, they gave their opinions and I just wanted to give mine.

I am not getting my hopes up about seeing many (or any) photos of the girls in Paris. The press has reported that Michelle will have only one public appearance (in Normandy) and that the rest of the trip will be private.

They aren't going to be over there for a photo shoot.

Hi All,

Here's a JPEG found on Democratic Underground. It's a young women student listening to Obama speak at the University of Cairo. Wow. Talk about "hijab chic"!

It reminds me of a university I taught at where lots of young women wore hijab. And I am here to tell you, those girls could turn it on!

@Leah D: Good point about pictures of the girls. Maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't, but it's probably better to assume that it won't. Soon after the Obamas moved to down, there was a story in the Washington Post's gossip section about Sasha Obama at a play date with some other little kids, and it included a photo of her bouncing around with another child. It was quite cute. But I haven't seen anything like that since then (even though the kids are out and about all the time, playing various sports and such) I wonder if a few calls from the White House went out to the editors of the Post, telling them to knock it off.

And one thing I DID learn from that NBC special was that when the Obamas accompany the kids to games, they ask the cameras to stay on them (the adults,) not the kids.

It's a fine move, despite my own selfish personal desire to see more of the kids (because they're cute as buttons.) They're starting to reach the age where they will be cognizant of this attention, and I don't want to see pictures of them splashed up on Perez Hilton.

Thanks for the link Peggy! It puts an end to all the speculation and potential negative narrative that was slowly brewing.

Of particular note in the article was the emphasis on Jackie's background and perfect fit with her new position:

"Norris earned a master's degree from Iowa State University in Ames last year, writing her thesis on community service and youth voting.

Norris said the move is not a demotion.

"This is just a great opportunity for me to really work full-time on the thing that I'm most passionate about," she said.

Norris said the new job will be comparable in its demands on her time, although she will no longer have an office in the White House.

"I will still be working incredibly close with the office of the first lady," she said.

I agree with Leah D. Even though I love coming to this site for Mrs. O's fashion and other topics surrounding her activities, for Malia and Sasha's sake, I can more than deal without much press while they're there. I'm sure after the trip, the White House photographer will release a bunch of pictures that we may miss. The Obamas declined a dinner invitation with the Sarkozys in order to meet with workers at the U.S. embassy in Paris and be with his family after the D-Day commemeration tomorrow. Plus his great- uncle will be at the ceremony tomorrow as well. The French press is doing a lot of speculation, but my thought is that the Prez is tired and just needs to regroup with his wife and children before he heads back to the U.S. The press may get a lot of pictures of the outside of the limo, but they can't get into a hotel, restaurant, or museum if they're not allowed. The President has been looking so tired (all the politicians are wanting "face time" with him for their local press). Today, the German press was speculating at the press conference why he didn't spend more time in Germany and with Chancellor Merkel. He replied that "there's only 24 hours in a day". But he always looks so much better after he's spent private time with Mrs. O and the girls.

I really like this outfit and I think it is completely appropriate. It is relaxed and classy. The event was a lunch between the two of them. This was just perfect. I also appreciate the thoughtful color choice as I believe that Nancy Reagan's favorite color is red.

There are new pictures of Michelle and her daughters (and mom) at the Eiffel Tower on Getty Images.

Yes, I do think red is Nancy Reagan's favorite color. I think I've even heard it referred to as "Reagan Red" at one time.

Thanks for the heads up about the pics on getty bmw. I'm glad it was just 3 or 4 photo's and they didn't over do it (or at least i hope they don't) with tons and tons of coverage on the girls. They look like their having a great time.

They look so casual chic in Paris! Adorable. Malia and Sasha look like child models, I swear. They are just so pretty. Hope they have a great time in Paris. I'm planning on going next summer and it'll be my first time.

Love Michelle's outfit. Very chic and comfortable looking.

Thanks bmw...it does look like it's easier to have less crowds around them when they don't have the President's motorcade (sad to say). So glad Mrs. Robinson came, and I see Michelle's niece and the makeup stylist, Ingrid behind her in one of the pictures. I had forgotten that it's little Sasha's birthday this weekend, and the kids are out of school now. Can you imagine the insanity that would happen if the President went there at the same time? But the family looks very relaxed and normal. No "fashion face-off" with Carla Sarkozy, just a family outing and Mrs. O doesn't have to be all dolled up today.

I like Michelle's hair. She's got it pulled back in a pony tail but it's a bit higher on her head and there's a little height to it (does that make sense?) I think it looks great on her! Very youthful. And her mom looks fantastic!!

In the photos:
Michelle, Malia, Sasha, Michelle's mom, Michelle's brother Craig, and Craig's daughter is standing next to Michelle's mom.

Doesn´t the "queen of fashion" know that two different patterns combined is a complete NO NO? Stripes and flowers -yuck!

Look forward to more Paris pictures...
