Good Lord my memory is getting bad... I meant to post that I just watched the 6 parts of NBC's day with the President.

It was very interesting. I wish however that they hadn't edited it to be so jumpy. I know that things in the White House must be busy, I didn't need to have less-than-a-second frames whizzing past me to remind me. Lots of meetings? Lots of people doing lots of things at lots of speed? Yeah, I kinda assumed that one, thank you.

I simply loved the bit where the security guys asked the President to stay in his car for a minute and he said "I don't WANT to stay in the car" and just got out!!! Yay for him!!!

I also wish that some of the questions could have been a bit less.... hackneyed. No offense, I'm sure they were very carefully considered, but the questions like "do you ever stop to be amazed at where you live/work" kinds of questions have been done already. So to do them twice in one show (Gibbs/Obama) was a waste of an opportunity.

I was also very disappointed that the Republican rumpus around Sotomayor was given so much airtime. It was a non-topic. Why on earth ANYone listens to these press guys who just dredge up old, unrelated, out-of-context quotes and use them to create a storm that isn't real, I have NO IDEA. How do they sleep at night? They are paid to upset people and lie. The quote was from 2001 and used out of context. That's not a story, that's spin. Why didn't all the other journalists write a story saying "sadly today the Idiot Press Corporation tried to start a storm in a teacup over Justice Sotomayor, buy using an irrelevant quote to make her look bad. The Republicans used it as a drum to beat because they haven't got anything else to say". Now THERE's a story that I'm interested in.

Raise the bar gentlemen of the press, you bore me.

One very good surprise : It's fantastic to have Malia and Sasha in Paris for their first "first daughters'visit". Besides, do you know that in France, mother's day is this coming sunday ?!! I hope that your exquisite first family will have a good time, and as I posted before, it's really Spring and blue sky and beautiful in the city right now... I feel thrilled , thanks so much for the post, V.

just saw that Michelle will be in Normandy on sat and then she and the girls (sasha and malia) will be in Paris! Woo hoo!

@Posh Tater - I'm with you on the inane questions. Brian Williams in not one of my favorite people. He is very Republican, and his insulting and demeaning comments continuously remind me of that. I also find him annoyingly pompous, and usually chose not to watch him. I had to put up with him last night to see "Inside the Whitehouse", but his comments are often belittling, vacuous and ridiculous.

I didn't see all of the special last night. But, I don't think that the controversy over Sonia Sotomayor is manufactured by the press, so I just wanted to stick up for Brian to that extent. I think that it's possible to have a truly felt and intellectually honest opposition to her nomination. And truly, we'd see opposition unless Obama nominated Scalia's head in a jar, or something.

Daylife has photos of Mrs. O at today's graduation. She looks lovely. The red sash (not sure that's the right name for it) looks great on her.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 12:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterWillow

@ Post Tater - Since Sotomayor's nomination, I haven't had ONE conversation lasting more than 5 minutes about her statement, and I initiated the conversation. I don't know too many people concerned about her nomination because of it. The fact that the media is still talking about it - a week later - is totally their thing. The vast majority of Americans have made up their mind as to how they feel about that statement, one way or the other.

From my observation, it seems like a lot of people thought that part of the Special was forced, or odd, in a way. My family and I thought it was overkill and the editing by NBC seemed overly dramatic.

I like the small, dangling earrings Mrs. O is wearing today.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 12:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterWillow

@Posh Tater and IVA - NBC tends to slant things to their political point of view as much as possible. They were not one of the networks helping President Obama get elected. They continue, in small nuances, to do what they can to cast this administration in a bad light.

The controversy over Sotomayor is manufactured by political operatives to damage her and the administration as much as possible. As you said, IVA, it doesn't seem to be working with the American people.

Sorry about my many posts. But I just learned that Phylicia Rashad will star as the matriarch in an all-white family in "August: Osage County." CNN did a story. They asked theater-goers if they noticed the skin tone during the performance. Most said the difference in skin color was not an issue for them.

PROGRESS! (The caps are used here in celebration) (smile)

Willow, MSNBC was helping get Obama elected, and their viewership skyrocketed during the campaign. Yes, Brian is to the right of the spectrum, but in that regard, I thought that this worked in POTUS' favor last night. POTUS came off as busy, confident, and without artifice.

Posh, I agree that the editing was choppy and the interview redundant. Unfortunately, just less than 47% of the US voters either voted for McCain, or against Obama. The right wing media have an audience, but POTUS was clear that he felt the American people had a differing view on most issues from the media spouters on the right.

Tonight will be great - coming from the East Wing.

Laura (our host) looks very nice and I like the outfit with the orange sweater.

The other outfits are...well...ugh! The flowered dress is way too short for work (unless you work at the Playboy mansion) and the patent shoes are ill fitting and look cheap (I can find great shoes that aren't that expensive and a whole lot nicer than those things). While I like the white coat, I don't like that particular combination of the white coat and flowered dress (even the combination worked, the coat is too long with that dress - the length of the coat makes the dress look even shorter and calls attention to that fact).

The pink dress is also ill fitting (this is why all stylists a tailor - off-the-rack clothes look so much better when they fit properly). I don't like the white belt with the dress (although I do admit to hating white shoes and purses with a passion so maybe it's just me about the white belt)...maybe another color such as turquoise?

One more thing - I don't think Michelle is a saint; no one is a saint. But as a FASHION role model (which is what this site is about and nothing more), I love her - I'm her age and it's great to have someone who demonstrates that one can still be sexy without boob jobs, hanging your boobs out on display for everyone to see, botox, going out without your panties on and showing your crotch, or having a sex video go pubic...opps, public! :) (Sorry, couldn't resist the bad pun).

I am excited to see a adult woman wearing fashions that suit one's age rather than seeing a woman in her 40's wearing something that is better suited for a 25-year-old (for example, I think Heather Locklear would look so fantastic in a nice pants suit or dress rather than wearing the clothes she does - it actually makes her look older and insecure - but that's just my opinion). You would never catch Mrs. O wearing low rise jeans with a thong hanging out the back and wearing a belly-showing shirt.

I am hoping that because of Michelle, the sheath dress will come back - how I love those and I would love to buy more except I can't find any. I'm also hoping for the return of kitten heels (I love mine - they're old and I keep on getting them fixed and am dreading the day they die)...I am tired of all the shoes out there looking like they belong in a porn movie instead of work. Who can stand for hours in shoes that have four- or five-inch heels?

Fashion is fun; Michelle's style is fun. This site is light-hearted fun. Everyone needs some fun in their life - especially now with all this economic uncertainty. So, Mrs. T, thanks for the fun!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 1:18 PM | Unregistered CommenterFoo

@Bevi - I looooove MSNBC. Rachel Maddow is one of the most brilliant minds on TV, and her presentation and sense of humor make her easy to watch. She is absolutely the best. Olberman is good, Ed Schultz is good, Chris Mathews is a mixed bag. But they do have their far right commentators like Pat Buchanan.

NBC seems to be different, however. During the campaign, Chuck Todd impressed me, but his true colors have been visible since the election.

I hope you're right that Williams slant actually helped the President look better. Sometimes my bias makes it difficult for me to know.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 1:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterWillow

that was a fun clip, i liked laura when she was on PR (though she wasn't my favorite that season. loved last night's NBC special as well, loved how young and vibrant and diverse all the staff was, everyone looked so excited to be working there; and i noticed that quite a few of the women working there were mimicking the boss' wife's sleeveless look.

"Sorry about my many posts. But I just learned that Phylicia Rashad will star as the matriarch in an all-white family in “August: Osage County.”

@Willow: Holy smokes, really? I saw that play last year, and it is AMAZING. And the matriarch is an unbelievably meaty role. Huh. To be honest, I don't see Phylicia Rashad in it, not because of her race but because I haven't really seen her show a huge dramatic range. Fascinating.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 1:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristina

Christina, Phylicia has great acting chops. She won a Tony for lead actress for "Raisin in the Sun" a couple years back; my cousin saw the play and told me she was wonderful in it. I think you may still somewhat typecasting her as Claire Huxtable in your mind. Just give her a chance; she'll do fine.

Bevi, can you please explain what you mean by this: "...MSNBC was helping get Obama elected..." How were they helping to get him elected? Anyone specifically at MSNBC?

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 1:47 PM | Unregistered Commentermarabout40

Lilly O, I saw Phylicia Rashad on the all-black Cat on a Hot Tin Roof that was on Broadway not too long ago, and I wasn't bowled over (though she was far, FAR better than Terrence Howard, God knows.) But you're right, I haven't seen it, I should try to dig up some reviews.

Really, no network should be trying to get anyone elected, at least not in their news coverage. Bill O'Reilly or Keith Olbermann should say what they want, but the news folks should keep things down the middle.

Again, I haven't seen Brian, but I wonder if he was attempting to counter an impression (which I agree with) that Obama has gotten pretty positive press overall compared to other presidents. That doesn't mean I think his press has been 100 percent positive. Just that it's been MORE positive.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 1:55 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristina

I apologize for the sweeping comment I made about MSNBC "helping to get Obama elected." That was a poor choice of words.

What I meant by that erroneous characterization was the folks who are commentators on MSNBC (Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann) provided a counterpoint to FOX who have O'Reilly & Hannity who had a Republican slant. The actual news reporters on MSNBC appeared unbiased. And Morning Joe is a mixed bag, as Willow pointed out.

And of course, Jon Stewart added a whole other dimension to the campaign coverage.

This blog keeps me honest! (And well it should!)

The first lady talked about Sotomayor today in her commencement speech. She spoke candidly. I have to wonder sometimes if she's not a better speaker than her husband. I know those graduates were thrilled after hearing her

@Bevi - A small correction: I think that Morning Joe is actually quite biased toward the right, with Joe Scarborough moderating. Chris Matthews has his own show in the afternoon.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 2:19 PM | Unregistered CommenterWillow

Spot on Posh Tater!

IVA: I too thought Valerie Jarrett looked spectacular...I adore her!

Christina: That's pretty erroneous the concept that President Obama's gotten more "positive" press.

They media's tried really hard to skewer him, but it's pretty tough when the subject is as disciplined and hard to pin as Obama.

So if the press he's gotten has been decent, it's no thanks to the media, but a testament to the subject - the man himself.

Willow: I agree with you on the commentators at both MSNBC & FOX...
I however do not watch Morning Joe; I simply cannot bear to see or hear that Scarborough guy!

I loathe Pat Buchannan - a smart man so disingenuous & dangerously twisted!

I sometimes wonder if he and his sister Bay who comes on on CNN are reflective of some sick twisted family gene or some mean and unhappy upbringing.

And as a nice Catholic girl, I squirm when they both plead their Catholic "faith" as they hurl & spew such meanspirited and hatefilled rhetoric.

Laura Bennett is another amazing woman - doesn't she have a ton of little ones running around while she works full time? Wikipedia lists her as having 5 sons!!

I have to agree about the fit of the clothes in the video. Fit is everything. The pink dress didn't fit the model well under the arms and that print dress did not look like an A-line dress to me! It should have been longer, too.

Am I the only person on the planet that HATES white trenches? I think they look like lab coats! The one thing that gave me hope this Spring was the mild "revamping" of the classic trench that I saw: it was still belted but ended at the hip. Much more versatile.

Laura has six kids, which is pretty darn impressive! I remember how offhand she was about it during Project Runway, she said she'd just throw the kid on a pile "with the rest of them." Which I know sounds callous but it was very funny the way she put it.

I never thought about white trenches looking like lab coats, now I won't be able to get that image out of my mind! For me, a white coat is just asking for problems. I could never keep that kind of thing looking nice.

One of the most intelligent bloggers I read is Digby. She is fabulous. The blog I link to is not written by her, but discusses exactly what we have been saying about MSNBC, the disgrace of Pat Buchanan, who they have on way too much, and Morning Joe.

Six?? Hmm. The notion "we have a slightly overcrowded planet full of hungry people" springs to mind for me...

I'm interested to hear that people think that Brian guy is a bit biassed towards the right. I didn't think it was great enough to comment on but I had the feeling that there was an ever-so-slight kink to the commentary to try and tint perception of the administration. Didn't work for me - and I think Obama is right to keep reiterating that the American people don't appear to be holding the same view as a tiny section of the media!

Oh! And the bit trying to get Rahm Emanuel to compare Obama and Clinton was simply pathetic. I loved the way he camne storming past the cameras being bleeped out and saying "I hate you all"!!! Made my day! (Actually that's not true, I was weighed this morning and I'd lost another half pound despite cheating, so that actually made my day - Rahm came a close 2nd tho'...)

Can't wait to see the East Wing programme. Hope the editing is better.

Christina - Just do an image and/or Google search for women's short trench coats....there are some seriously cute ones out there this year. Great time to buy them, too, with summer almost here. I buy my wardrobe staples off-season and save a fortune. I think even a white trench might look cute if it was short! But I would certainly be the first to spill coffee on it or sit on something, which is why I personally steer clear of white as a rule. And besides, my hips surely don't need any more volume!

Several months ago, I was looking for a pair of winter white pants. And I was looking and looking and looking, and nothing seemed to fit me quite right. And then I realized that's because white pants make me look AS BIG AS A HOUSE. I fear a white trench would do the same. But it's nice for women smaller than I and those who aren't as accident prone.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 10:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristina

Christina I Royal watch a bit and the Spanish Crown Princess, Letizia, came under intense criticism from certain quarters about wearing white trousers too often. (I'm not sure how you define "too often" but some people know exACTly what it means!) But if white trousers suit you and you are as tiny as Letizia is (she's a natural thinifer) then I say wear 'em every day, I say. For those of us not blessed with Gwyneth or Halle's legs, then a little caution is to be exercised, I agree with you!!! Although I did have some success last year with a pair of wide legged white trousers worn with a long black tunic that finished mid thigh.

But I digress....

A trench would probably be alright. Maybe a three quarter length sleeve (so you can't drag them in any coffee/red wine/take-out)? Single breasted (SO hard to find) if you have a generous upper half? God knows all those flaps and straps are supremely unflattering if you're less than five foot seven and over a size 12. (UK)

I keep finding Michelle style casual waterproofs and having to remind myself that I would look like a condom full of squirming labrador puppies if I even THOUGHT about trying it on.

"Back away from the pink silk drawstring waisted waterproof ... "
