White House Seder

Photo credit: Pete Souza / White House T

his evening the Os hosted what is believed to be the first ever Passover Seder at the White House, held in the Old Family Dining Room. The dinner included traditional Passover dishes such as matzo ball soup, brisket and kugel. The Obamas were joined by friends, White House employees and their families. Read more at The Caucus blog. On a style note (though we can see just a sliver of her), Mrs. O wears her hair pulled into a loose chignon as she did earlier in the day, and a cream colored jacket.

The article about them not going to church since inaug is correct. That service they attended was part of an official inauguration function. So they really have not taken the time to attend church at their own initiative. They say they are "shopping around" for one.

The Fashion Institute of Technology will be presenting a retrospective of Isabel Toledo's work this summer called "Isabel Toledo: Fashion from the Inside Out." (http://www.fitnyc.edu/aspx/Content.aspx?menu=FutureGlobal:Museum:Exhibitions:UpcomingExhibitions#toledo)

I'm jealous of all you New Yorkers and others on the East Coast who will get to see these clothes in person. I hope they do a catalogue.

Speaking of Toledo, the recent New York magazine lookbook said that she designed the sleeveless, V-neck, full-skirted, 50's looking cocktail dress that MO wore to a Lincoln-related event at the Ford Theater earlier this year.

Although I don't agree with all of MO's fashion choices, I love the fact that she seeks out younger, lesser known designers, and that she's not afraid to experiment with color and silhouette. It's the basic confidence behind her choices that's the secret, I think.

The Obama's have modernised American politics. They are really going to leave a legacy in eight years.

In a traditional Seder there is no mention of Jesus as a savior - in fact there is no mention of Jesus at all. Matzoh is unleavened and has two ingredients in it, and the Seder celebrates the freeing of the tribes and their Exodus from Egypt.

This egg roll will be historic. And if there is a chapel at Camp David and they have been there two times a month for the past two months, we don't know that they have not attended a religious service, Jojo.

There has been so much talk about the Obamas attending or not attending church. I don't blame them at all for "shopping" for a church home. There is not only the feeling they may get from the church they choose, but also the semantics of security to consider. Gosh, can anyone imagine what this family has gone through? We are a small middle class family and when we moved a couple of years ago, it took us six months to find a church that we were happy and comfortable with.
On another note, I am so happy they are finally getting their doggie!!!

Like many American Jews, I was deeply moved by the first White House seder. To those of you non-Jews unfamiliar with this ritual dinner, the Last Supper of Jesus and his apostles was in fact a Passover seder. One of the themes of the meal is the remembrance of those who are hungry, enslaved, or otherwise afflicted. Jews are required to open their homes, their hearts, and their seder tables to anyone in need: "Let all who are hungry come and eat," is one of the lines we read aloud from the Haggadah.

A lovely gesture.

I am reluctant to get off-topic, but since it has come up repeatedly here, remember that Trinity College poll that came out the first of March? It found that the number of Americans who identify themselves as Christians has dropped significantly over the past 20 years — while 15 percent of U.S. residents now say they have “no” religion—the only group that grew.

I think people get weary of "our way or the highway" mentality when it comes to religion, and I'm with Tia, I could care less about what church they attend or whether they go at all. He was elected President by people of all faiths, as well as atheists and agnostics, I'm sure, so these ecumenical gestures are more important than the frequency with which they are attending church.

Brilliant. And that's all there is to it, simply brilliant.
