Puppy O Update

Photo credit: Pete Souza / The White House
Welcome First Puppy Bo! Love the lei, little guy. Arriving in style -- you've charmed us already. Get the full scoop on Bo's arrival at the Washington Post. After much speculation, nearly as much as Mrs. O's Inaugural Ball gown, little Bo proves to be a Portuguese Water Dog. (...So Mrs. O really did mean "soon!")

LOL! "SOON!" Just like a mom.
Love your style, J.Crew. You always look beautiful. You are our inspration to all women. Now! What about that puppy :). American Pitbull, think about it.
they have got to be tired of that question!
I hope the Obamas will have a full time dog wrangler. They are in for a heap o' trouble with a PWD. Definitely not a starter dog. On the plus side though, PWDs are adorable! (especially the puppies) Bon Chance!
They have just GOT to be so sick of that question. They are both so funny too. Sometimes I worry that they are both so approachable that the media are going to drive them crazy by the end of 4 (or hopefully 8) years.
Don't think there should be a dog at all with family allergies. Enjoy other people's dogs occasionally, or enjoy the part time fun of the Washington Zoo. Gosh!
Update on Sarah Brown and her ""frumpy clothes." It's been reported that Michelle Obama buys her own clothes, but on Wednesday The Times of London reported that Prime Minister Gordon Brown's wife Sarah rents her designer duds. Why? As the Times explains...
She has no income of her own, having given up all paid work when her husband was Chancellor to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest. She is not allowed to receive gifts, nor to borrow clothing, not even for a summit.
So to look the part for Britain, Mrs Brown has to rent these outfits, the ones that we all scrutinise so brutally, paying a tenth of their value (excluding shop mark-ups) each time. She paid hundreds of pounds of her own money to rent [the £9,000 top], and returned it afterwards
The Guardian confirmed this piece of information:
Downing Street has today confirmed that Mrs Brown did indeed hire many of the clothes she wore to the G20, as well as the Amanda Wakeley outfits for a recent state banquet for Felipe Calderón, the Mexican president, and the lord mayor's banquet.
Even that glamorous Graeme Black jacket she wore outside Downing Street to welcome the Obamas and other world leaders, was rented - probably a wise move considering one of his jackets can cost as much as £3,000, and she would doubtless be pilloried for daring to wear the same outfit twice.
Buy or rent, Sarah Brown is an absolutely wonderful and supportive wife and mother...
She and our lovely and exquisite first lady are incredibly brave women to put themselves through this awful crap including having vile cowards hiding behind the anonymity of the internet spewing their empty and nonsensical superficial fashion non ideas at them...
If many of us are sick of it, I can imagine how appalling it must be for these women-
And please, none of the "they are public people" and it's all in "light fashion fun" lameness; Much of it has been mean-spirited, petty, incredibly invasive and demeaning-
Hope everyone uses this Easter to really think about the true meaning of goodness, decency and charity-
Great news about the dog! And he's a shelter dog in a way...like a shelter dog or cat, he is seeking his forever home.
Have a good holiday C. You deserve it. A couple of venal bloggers have been over the top the last 2 weeks and it is really tiresome and unnecessary. I see how people on this site are able to make known their differing opinions without being unkind, sarcastic, or judgmental and it just makes the bitter blog posts that much more obvious.
Mrs. T does a great job of letting people work it out, but some of the *stuff* that is written is ridiculous.
That being said, some of the other blog spots that discuss Mrs. O and PLOTUS are absolutely over the top with hate mongers and racist remarks, and others are rife with comments that are downright scary.
The Obamas have tried to reach out to many sectors, and they have only been in office for 80+ days. They are decent people who have brought decency to DC. They obviously have thick skins. But when I think of the campaign they ran, I think of their refusal to besmirch Sarah Palin and others who had no problem leveling salvos in the Obama's direction. On this holiday, I remind myself that the Obamas are well versed in turning the other cheek.
I read that the dog name is Charlie, His 6 month old, and he is Black and White... Check this site firstdogcharlie.com
Thanks
www.firstdogcharlie.com he is arriving on Tuesday!
They named him Bo!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/11/AR2009041102484.html?hpid=artslot
The Washington Post website has pictures of the dog with the whole Obama family. He's a cutie -- apparently Portuguese Water Dogs are very, very active, so that's perfect for a family with young kids.
I've always wanted a rescue greyhound. You'd think they'd be running around all the time, but apparently they are an extremely mellow breed.
Christina,
Thank you for the heads up!
Wow! I thought we were going to have to wait until Tuesday!
So, the girls named him: Bo
now how great is that!
The story is actually on the front page of the Washington Post and THREE pages long - yippee!
A good photo of Bo:

Awwwwwwwww...he's so yummy!
So, let's see...
OBAMA:
• Meeting the woman of my dreams - check
• Have two adorable kids - check
• Becoming President - check
• Living in the White House - check
• And finally, a dog named Bo! CHECK
I hope the Obama's have lots and lots of fun with this dog. Now he's going to be part of the family and will be able to grow with the girls in the White House.
A collective sigh of relief!
YAYYYY, FINALLY!!!
and im glad that they gave money to a rescue organization to make up
Cute dog!
He is just darling. And he'll fit in well at the White House. Plenty of yard to run in. And two energetic girls to play with. He'll continue the training he's been receiving too.
No way this puppy is being returned a second time.
Yes, it is too bad it isn't a shelter dog or a rescue. But...he is a "re-homed" dog. He won't be rejected this time. He's found his forever home.
who could EVER return this cutie? so sweet.
The dog is adorable, I just wish it was taken from a puppy mill rather than bought - they would have led a great example.
Sorry, in my previous post I didn't mean puppy mill, but puppy shelter!!!
THE DOG IS ADORABLE, I JUST WISH THEY WOULD HAVE GOT HIM AT A PUPPY SHELTER OR KENNEL RATHER THAN BOUGHT IT.
We know, Xs, but apparently PWDs are rarely at shelters. And it's not like they had a choice of breeds with the allergy situation.
A very Easter to you too Bevi...God bless you and yours!
And you are right...As a devout Catholic, I find myself less and less inclined to participate in the communal church sense of things...the campaign and elections were indeed eye-opening!
I have since withdrawn and re-organized my charity-giving and other things, mostly in response to some of the more obscene happenings...
As I told one of the church organizations I previously supported, it became even clearer to me in the course of the last year that the Obama's seemed to have more decency and Christian charity in their pinky than many of my loudly pontificating fellow Catholics-
My "communal faith" has indeed taken a major hit...
But the dog is simply lovely...and here's hoping the Obama's have many years of happy enjoyment of this wonderful addition to their family...
And yes, let's reclaim this blog from the awful, hate-filled trolling cowards!
The cutest thing I've ever seen. And he has a sense of color! What a necklace! Hope everyone (includimg rejected pup) is happy!
So cute! His name is cute too!! Maybe Bo will play with the kids tomorrow at the Easter Egg Roll.
I feel a little bit honored!! My Golden's name is Bo!!!
Though I was a teeny bit disappointed that the Obamas didn't adopt from a shelter, it makes my heart feel good that they made a donation to their local shelter. I have always adopted my cats and dogs from either shelters or breed rescue groups. They have all been wonderful pets!!
Dogs with uncertain lineages can BECOME shedding dogs later in life, which is devastating to families with allergies because the dog then has to be returned or sent to a shelter. The only way to guarantee that your dog will remain hypoallergenic is to get it through a breeder.
Portys are wonderful starter dogs and great for families. They are great with children and very, very trainable. They are high-energy, yes, but with enough exercise (lord knows the dog will be getting plenty of walks and playtime), he will be a happy, well-adjusted, wonderful family dog.
Too adorable! But I know, no matter how adorable a dog this puppy is, a PWD is NOT the dog for me. Please, Please everyone do their research when considering a pet and know what breed is right for your family. DO NOT get a dog just becuase someone in the public eye has one. Our shelters are full enough already. That said, Bo is cute as pie! :)
That is a funny bit in the WaPo article about how Bo comes tuxedo-ready! Just another well-dressed and appropriate member of the Obama family . . .
POTUS and First Family are attending church for Easter Services at St. John's Church north of Lafayette Park, just across from White House. "politico reports"
Apparently Mrs. O's father's nickname was Didley - as in "Bo Didley". Thus, the dog's name, Bo. I looked up a clip of Bo Didley on youtube and it turns out he was a legendary rock-n-roll artist from the South Side of Chicago and in the clip he bears great physical resemblance to Mrs. O's father. How intriguing! They really put a lot of symbolism into the choice of the puppy's name.

The dog is cute.

Bevi, well said. The President and First Lady are both excellent examples of good people trying to live a Christian life.
I hope we get a family picture from today!
That is one cute dog! And I'm not even a dog person.
I was a bit surprised that people don't know Bo Diddley, but then I realized - I'm old!
Mimi,
Thanks for the link. That looks like a new suit for POTUS! It's striped no less. I've never seen it before. They look so nice together.
Yes, little Bo is really beautiful.
The Obamas didn't buy him, though.
The little dog was GIVEN to them by Senator Ted Kennedy, who owns 3 of that breed.
I'm sorry to be so ignorant, but what does POTUS mean? I think Janelle is referring to President Obama, but not sure.
Thanks, Mimi, for the link to the Easter photo of the Obamas at Church this morning.
Tootsie,
You got it right. POTUS= President of the United States; FLOTUS = First Lady of the US. There are so many other blogging abbreviations that I am just learning myself.
I'm back! I found it to be President Of The United States -- POTUS. Thanks to www.dogpile.com which is my favorite search engine. Someone refered to Mr. Obama as PLOTUS, but I guess they meant POTUS.
Our President is wearing a new suit - Easter suit! They look so "Springy" together coming back from Church!
And I'm with you, Hyde Parker, I'm not a dog person too, and this dog got an "awww" from me!
Michelle looks lovely! A sweet floral dress, sheer cream cardigan and a double strand of pearls. More or less exactly what I pictured for her Easter Sunday outfit.
However, I am not really a fan of Mr. O's pinstriped suit. In fact, I kind of hate it. Maybe I am jut not a fan of pinstriped suits (though I love the one that Michelle wears) but it's just too busy and too loud or something.
He's such a handsome guy that I don't think it's even possible for him to look bad. But this is as close as he's ever gotten.
oh.
my.
God.
P0TUS looks so stunning in his pin stripe suit. God he is so gorgeous.*wants* ok sorry mrs. o but dang he is fine.
Xs,
Bo came from a kennel.
I think you meant 'shelter'.
And the Obama's did not buy the dog. The dog was returned by the previous owners that bought it - so the dog was technically homeless, and then Ted Kennedy made arraignments with the kennel to give it to the Obama Family.
---
Someone up thread mentioned something about older dogs shedding. It is not the hair that affects allergies it is the 'pet dander' according to what I have read.
We love you BO Obama the First Dog
