Serving on the 100th Day

First Lady Mrs. O and Dr. Jill Biden joined 160 Congressional spouses and children to volunteer at the Capital Area Food Bank today. Mrs. O and Dr. B are pictured with Lynn Brantley, Executive Director of the Capitol Area Food Bank and Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of Feeding America. Mrs. O wears J.Crew's Featherweight cashmere argyle cardigan in silver olive salt, paired with cropped gray pants and Lanvin's cap toe sneakers. Click here to see another fantastic image from today's event (thank you American-n-Rome!) P.S. We do love Dr. B's cropped white pants and silver flats!

Thanks to Janelle, who informs us the latter are Tory Burch's ‘Reva’ ballerina flats.

toobee,

Great point you made with your post. The same I have been trying to make it's her "Money" not mine or yours. And if she is silly enough to wear them at such a event it's her problem not yours or mines. I have watch Laura Bush wear very extravagant clothing at such events for the past eight years. Yet, no one screamed about it from the far right about Laura to think of the little people. That is the point I was trying to bring to the front.

It seems certain people or forgetting the last eight years of Bush. While people died in New Orleans or when the economy started to taken no one told Laura not to wear Oscar de la renta. This were I see the racism in this whole issue being hidden in people negative comments. And I don't like it. By the way I agree with you she should have wore another pair of shoes and so could have Mrs. Biden too. They both wore extravagant shoes but gee I wonder why they are attacking the "Black" First Lady and not the second Lady as well...Any takers?!!!

Tooboo YOU said: the “free” expensive clothes, the travelling make-up artist and hair stylist

First of all there are NO 'free' clothes, Michelle Obama pays for her own clothes. None of the Obama family clothes are paid for by anyone but themselves.

Secondly, Michelle pays for her make-up person and hair stylist.

Should we come to your house and tell you how we think you should spend 'your' money?

As far as the White House STAFF that you call 'servants' did you complain about the Bushes when they lived at the White House?

Toobee is just some old prejudiced republican woman, or worse yet maybe a democrat who just hates the FL, they are out there. She keeps on dodging the fact that Laura wore much more expensive clothes than FL Obama and never got criticized for it. What's the point of talking about Affirmative Action? This is not about her education or how she got an opportunity to be educated. I bet Toobee also thinks that segregation was ok, and that blacks were radical to demand equal rights in THEIR OWN country! She is a prejudiced woman, like i said and will never want to accept a black woman as her equal.

@ southern lady, yes Jill is smashing, but this site is dedicated to Mrs.O and SHE, not Jill, is the First Lady of the United States.

It looks like Mrs. T has cleaned up this stream. Thanks, Mrs. T.

I am not happy with the tone in here right now, but I understand that it cannot be helped. Posters preoccupied with race should really take their argument elsewhere.

I like the FL's fancy sneakers. I have a strong gut feeling that they were a gift - not a freebie - from another FL or friend.

Btw, I also like the forum idea; which, without compromising this interesting site, is achievable.

Back to the shoes! I love this blog. I love nearly everything Mrs. O wears. I think the Lanvin shoes are awesome. But still, even with all the admiration I have, it makes me uncomfortable to see anyone wearing $500 sneakers to head up an event called "Feeding America." I wish she had left the Lanvin in the closet that day.

@ jayj: "Btw, I also like the forum idea; which, without compromising this interesting site, is achievable."

Thank you. I've been suggesting it, all the while knowing it would be a lot of work. But my suspicion is that this site will grow geometrically, not arithmetically, and will soon have to change its character.

Blogs with large comment sections are usually serious commercial enterprises, and I don't think the people who comment here would want that. This blog is currently being underwritten by an advertising company as I understand it, but so far Mrs. T and the blog have remained extremely circumspect in that regard.

A forum on a fansite, which this blog is in a way, does require a lot of people working selflessly. I think it would be worth doing, definitely, but like others just don't have the time. I sometimes fantasize that some young PhD candidate might do it for her dissertation. But it's all so tricky, because we're not talking about an entertainment figure. Mrs. O is the First Lady of the United States of America!

I don't even know how some commenters have become acquainted off-site without a PM (private message) function, of the sort you could have with a forum.

I'm surprised to see so many attacks, in the media, regarding the expensive sneakers worn by FLOTUS. I think they make a valid point about wearing $500+ sneakers to feed the needy. However, the Obamas are millionaires. Unfortunately, the pants are way too tight. I'm not sure she should keep wearing the Capri style. It's a bit too casual for her public appearances. Hate the pants, love the sweater, love the sneakers, love the hair!! Jill Biden looks good too.

My two cents about an expanded forum.

There is already too much here to read as it is.

I think that a simple permanent link at the right side of the page for 'Off Topic' comments titled: OT Open Thread

would solve the problem of not having somewhere to post off topic comments. They would all be in one place and then we'd only have to click on the current article and the open thread link and everything would be easy to access, just my opinion.

Great Idea Leah D.

The problem with wearing the super expensive sneakers is Hypocrisy. The Obama are a couple who tell us we need to sacrifice (B Obama) and to give up more of our 'pie' for others (M Obama). Then she wears sneakers that someone making $250,000 / yr (B.O.'s definition of rich) wouldn't likely purchase due to the price.
