Our Charming First Couple

I\'m in good company...

Photo via Flickr user eclectico63 / Paris Match

We've just come across this fantastic new behind-the-scenes photo from the Inauguration, recently published in Paris Match. It's such a sweet candid shot of the First Couple. And does anyone else see what we do? Mrs. O seems to be wearing a white jacket with her Inaugural Ball gown. After countless photos, this is the first we've seen a jacket in the mix (not counting the photo that captured President Mr. O's tuxedo jacket around the First Lady's shoulders).

Reader Comments (58)

Now that is just adorable! They're so cute together, that Mr. O can be so funny!!!
BTW-can't get a clear look of the jacket-but..is it satin??? It's pretty though. What a catch. thanks for posting this. I really enjoy seeing candid shots like this.

It's a shame that there are so many loonie people out there in our society today - it would have been great if the First Couple could have been transported around on Inauguration Day in one of those old-fashioned horse and buggies.

Btw, here's a link to a slideshow of Michelle's hairstyles over the years:

I love them !!!! America aren't we lucky.

Great photo!

All Together now:

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!

How totally sweet. They really look like teenagers. And I guess Michelle DID have a jacket after all, but was probably still cold, hence the President's chivalry.

It's been said a gazillion times before, but there has really never been a First Couple (or a First Family) like this one. I really feel so much affection for both of them, and particularly for Michelle.

I think it's partly because this country has so many serious challenges right now, there is so much genuine goodwill to the folks taking on such a tough job. But also, I think, because THEY are very extraordinary people. And have such a great family. I think you have to be EXTREMELY cynical to not find them inspiring.

I love this 150%

I love everything about this photo! from the president's goofy grin, to the peace sign, to the Mrs. O, to the way they look like newlyweds on their way to their honeymoon!!!

They are such a darling couple. I love this picture.

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 4:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterYour Name Kathy

It IS a darling photo...BUT...am I missing something here? My two sons tell me it is NOT proper to wear white tie with a tuxedo coat. White tie is appropriate only with tails. Is this another tradition these people are going to upend?

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 4:29 PM | Unregistered Commenternancy

Jenna...my sentiments exactly-

Lovely, smart, disciplined, inspiring, super decent couple -couldn't ask for more-

I adore them!

Nancy, "these people"??? Sound the same as "that one"?

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 4:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterMrs. P

@Mrs. P: Try to ignore Nancy; maybe that's something else her two sone's have taught her. Perhaps IGNORANCE truly is bliss.

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 5:03 PM | Unregistered CommenterObserver

I don't know, Nancy... is it such a serious problem to wear white before Easter? Or to wear a cocktail-length dress to a gala instead of a long formal gown? What about going sleeveless after November? What, would you prefer someone hung the American flag upside down or, heaven forbid, burnt it to put it all in perspective?

Here's another cute picture of the Obamas leaving for Chicago this afternoon. I love seeing this coat and Michelle looks cute with flat boots.

Sasha's boots are so cute!

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 5:26 PM | Unregistered CommenterQuita

Look at little Miss Sasha in her swanky boots! I think we'll have ourselves another fashionista in a few years. She's already showed off an enviable sense for color. Who else could pair orange and pink, like she did for the Inauguration, without looking like a neon sign? Sasha somehow managed to find the only shades that would work.

And her Momma looks great too. That coat is always a stunner.

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 5:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterJenna

Quita, you beat me to it! Sasha looks so hip and cool!

What strikes me is that these photos show just how tall Mrs. O is in comparison to the other people around her.

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 5:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterChicagoan

Hilarious photo, I love it!!!

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 5:39 PM | Unregistered CommenterLisaC

Again, Mrs. T, after a tough day at work, your site makes me smile! The candid Inaugural picture is so charming, and Mr. O is so real - hamming here, (definite NOT hamming during his news conference earlier this week). It's refreshing to have a First Family that seems so natural and at ease. Was struck by that reading some of your recent posts - Mrs. O is always poised and appropriate for her audiences. Look at the range in her engagements (same day?) between interacting with pre-schoolers and comments to college students. The Obamas are a needed breath of fresh air on all fronts. Thank you!

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 5:42 PM | Unregistered CommenterMonica

that is just about the cutest photo ever! they are so fun together, i hope they always stay that way. as for miss sasha, she looked like the cutest little popsicle ever on inauguration day, it was completely adorable for someone her age.

This blog is an uplifting and fun little escape I look forward to everyday.

Michelle is glamorous and gorgeous but has her priorities in order too. She is truly a celebration of all a woman can be.

The Obamas inspire us all to do better in our own lives whatever our circumstances.

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 5:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterRuby

I can't help it but they look so... innocent. Yayyy! for our country!

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 6:07 PM | Unregistered CommenterGloria5

haha, I think we all love Sasha's boots. Here is a close-up picture of them: http://www.daylife.com/photo/0cKkdBqg2Zabu/michelle_obama

I also love her HUGE bookbag.

(Hey icebergslim, old friend! I used to be Jenontheshore on Daily Kos.)

Hey iceberg! Good to see you!

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 6:45 PM | Unregistered Commentermeta

What a fabulous photo.
Americans are admired for their unpretentious natural glamor and this couple so personifies that.
They radiate MODERN.

Nancy is correct is her comment regarding bow ties - but I am not sure that Pres O's white tie actually constituted a 'real' white tie which yes, sartorial rules dictate should be worn only w/ tails. I believe his tie was a custom colored J Crew 'regular' bow tie and hence more flexible as to how it can be worn. At least thats how I construed it.

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 6:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterRJT

My understanding also is that Nancy is correct. But putting it in these gasping, pearl-clutching, "what other traditions will THESE PEOPLE upend" tones, as if this was life and death, is just over the top. Who cares about a bow tie, really?

Now we see where silly Sasha gets her looks from - Daddy! This picture is pure sugar. I hope they have a wonderfully romantic weekend. I read on politico that Mr. O bought a custom baked chocolate cake that said "I love You" on it. Awwww...

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 8:14 PM | Unregistered CommenterIVA

And Sasha's outfit, with the boots, reminds me of the outfit Michelle wore when the family visited the Lincoln Memorial and when she dropped the kids off for their first day. If I remember correctly, she wore boots like that too.

Jenna, thank you for the link. Lovely, lovely.

This is the waist height I would like to see on Mrs. O http://www.wwd.com/fashion-week/fall-ready-to-wear-2009/review/jason-wu-rtw-fall-2009-1986753?module=today&city=new-york#/slideshow/microsite/fall-ready-to-wear-2009/1986753/1987503/new-york

Most of Mrs. O's seem a bit higher including the red one she wore on her first visit and the one she word to the theatre recently. I think high waist looks better on shorter folk.

Layo G, thanks for the link to the Jason Wu collection. I am very impressed with it. There a few pieces that I absolutely can't wait to see on Mrs. O!

For Mrs. O's next visit on her tour of the various federal offices: http://media.wwd.com/images/processed/Collections/2009/fall/jason-wu/portrait/00-main/04.jpg

For her next trip to the Kennedy Center: http://media.wwd.com/images/processed/Collections/2009/fall/jason-wu/portrait/00-main/13.jpg

And for her next formal ball: http://media.wwd.com/images/processed/Collections/2009/fall/jason-wu/portrait/00-main/20.jpg

The whole collection is really colorful and feminine. Even though I can't afford even a single sock, I am happy that Mrs. O has introduced me (and so many others) to Jason Wu. He's a breath of fresh air and deserves the spotlight.

What a great picture to capture a great moment in time...

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 10:47 PM | Unregistered Commentermicaro9

I think Nancy should take her "these people" attitude where it is appropriate:
which means off this blog and on to the SarahPAC website.

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 11:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterBeaver

@Mrs. P/Beaver

I agree. When I read what she said about "these people," I immediately knew where she was coming from. As far as "tradition," whose "tradition" are you speaking of? Yes, "CHANGE" has come! Thankfully!

Friday, February 13, 2009 at 11:28 PM | Unregistered CommenterGerri

This looks like a pic from prom night. The president looks like he has a little lip gloss on his lips. I wonder if he and Michelle had been smooching in the back of that little golf cart on their way to the 10 inagural balls. If so, that's so sweet.

Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 1:11 AM | Unregistered CommenterNewCenturyWoman

lol@newcenturywoman...I knew it was something about his lips and both of them have a sorta guilty expression! Like...oops. Cause we know Mr. O is all man and I've NEVER seen him with lip gloss on. His lips are awfully shiny there, and lo and behold, it's the same shade Michelle has on her lips!!! lol. Bet they did sneak a smooch back there. You know I've read articles about the two of them on the campaign trail and aides would talk about how the two of them would sneak kisses when they thought nobody saw them.

Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 3:16 AM | Unregistered Commenterdavesoko1

Nancy's sons are correct, finishing schools do teach that you should only wear white tie with tails. However, we know that the Obamas are breaking through many traditional standards. Thank God many of the "old" fashion rules are also being broken!

Guys - does anyone know where the inaugural night earrings are from? SOOOO elegant!

Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 11:47 AM | Unregistered CommenterMartha

@ Martha - Mrs. T posted a blog just after the balls that gave the scoop on the jewelry, if I remember correctly.

I remember reading the details about the dress, etc., but couldn't find anything on the earrings.

Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 1:59 PM | Unregistered CommenterMartha

could the Obamas be Camalot 2?

Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 4:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterMike

Okay, okay...isn't this a site to "discuss" Mrs. Obama's style and fashion. Does one need to agree 100%? Where is the discussion? Let's not all be slaves to the concept that she/they can do no wrong...or make no mistakes! I am hopeful, but not convinced.

Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 8:17 PM | Unregistered CommenterNancy

@ Nancy, if you obvisouly read this blog, you will see a lot of CRITIQUE, from many of us (including me). We all write freely about what we like, and what we wish could have been a better look (again, read all the entries carefully, and you will see critique from ALL the Mrs.-O blog faithfuls)

but we do not need to condescension, and the "these people" bitter comments. There is a difference between critique, and bitter criticism, we do not need the latter here

It is fine that you are not convinced, no one here is trying to make everyone a Mrs. O obsessed fan, but I think a little respect goes a long way, and having respect does not mean you have to like everything Mrs. O wears (and this site is about her fashion, and nothing else, so no politics here either)

thanks.
