Update: Mrs.O's Blue Coat is J.Crew

Though we previously reported that the blue tweed (possibly herringbone) coat that Mrs. O wore for her lunch date with Washington D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty was from Maria Pinto, we now have confirmation that it's in fact from J.Crew! We're told the coat is one of J.Crew's fall styles.

She looks lovely in all the different shades of blue and purple. An inspiration for those of us who wear too much black!
Never would have guessed that JCrew would produce a portrait-collar coat like that. I wonder if their relationship with Mrs O influenced their designers? She's certainly worn the style before, from Pinto to Rodriguez. How interesting if it's a cross-over due to her influence.
Lovely.
Jcrew is EXTREMELY lucky to be such a favorite for Michelle. They have to be thanking their lucky stars right now. She's really helping all sorts of people become interested in their clothes.
Personally...my view of Jcrew was always that it was for preppy college girls. I went to a liberal arts college in Vermont where jcrew was (for me) shorthand for the brainless, generic unstyle worn by girls I did not particularly care for. And I didn't even think that they had anything beyond those stupid, stupid shorts, and their (actually quite nice) sweaters.
But, needless to say, I've changed my mind about them somewhat. Or at least given them a second look. I went to their website several months ago after Michelle wore their clothes to the Tonight Show, and found that they really have so much more than I thought including very pretty dresses, and well-made basic sportswear. I haven't actually bought anything yet, but I am eying a gorgeous silk blouse with lattice detailing at the neckline. It's beeyoootiful, but actually a little expensive for me. Even though Jcrew is supposed to be Michelle's "regular lady" brand, it's actually quite the opposite for me who generally trolls the sales bin at H & M!
Yawn....
Janice, hope that made you feel better about yourself. You must have a scintillating personality!
congrats janice on such a stellar contribution to the conversation.
anyway, i'm with doreen; j crew used to not only be way out of my budget but it was always really preppy and boring. they're still pretty preppy, and definitely still expensive, but they're mixing in some more interesting pieces as well now.
I love the coat. Unfortunately, here in Houston, there's not a whole lot of need for coats. But it's fun to see Mrs. O wearing such beautiful ones.
Janice, why are you here? You obviously aren't at all interested. Always fascinates me to see how many people enjoy being negative.
Oh I love winter coats in cheery colors! It seems like so often neutral colored winter coats blend in with the dreary weather. I love it!
Is the dress Maria Pinto or J Crew?
Hi Amy, I'm fairly certain the dress is not from J.Crew. A very reliable source first told us the ensemble was Maria Pinto, but that may have just applied to the dress. We'll confirm on Monday.
Doreen and Chicagoan, I love your observation about J.Crew and agree. I think we have Jenna Lyons to thank for that. There was a great piece on her in Domino a few months ago, and a side bar that tracked the evolution of J.Crew over the past decade or so. Here's a link to the story:

I'm so sad that Domino is folding by the way...
michelle mixes high and low and that is what true style is all about. the need to wear only high end, prada, gucci, oscar de la renta etc is so old fashioned. michelle has complete style, she gets it and i love it!
J Crew can be affordable (yeah I know thats relative in the economy) but sign up for their email notices. Over the past few weeks they run sales with 30% off the sale prices. I think I got a few good deals. The sales are final but I've been satisfies with my purchases.
I loved this coat when i saw it in the post, and I LOVE her celeb status.
And the shiny chocolate-brown purse? I'm guessing Anya Hindmarch from this winter's collection.
Ladies?
I adored this coat! Now she's back on track! Can't wait til Fall, but the color is a little strange for a Fall collection I do declare... Does anyone else think so?
I think J.Crew will be trying harder than ever with a First Lady fan. We won't be disappointed when Michelle wears Crew!
Yea I graduated from so-called "J. Crew U". My detest for the brainless ppl at the school (and their lack of style) made me avoid the place like the plague (I wrote for my school's style section of the student newspaper). I would have never guessed that they had so many intersting cloths, that one could make their own style on.
While the price is kind of high (when it is not on sale) I like to buy a few pieces and mix them w/Target stuff.
Our new First Lady is absolutely gorgeous. She is not only intelligent, beautiful, loving and caring, she is a fantastic example of what it is to be a wonderful mother, wife and daughter. What a First Family to be sooooooo very proud of!!!!! Bless them and keep them safe always!!!!!
Here's a cool article on the J Crew craze:
